If you’re visiting an amusement park, beach or any crowded area, make sure your children know the rules of safety. Make sure they know the name of your hotel. Better yet, tuck a hotel business card or brochure in their pocket. Avoid sending even a 10 or 11 year old back to the parking lot to retrieve something left in the car. Do not send youngsters alone to a concession stand if it takes them out of your ﬁeld of vision. When you are standing on a line, don’t let your children wander unescorted in a gift shop or toy department. Most important, keep a current photo of each child with you at all times. It could become a vital means of identiﬁcation if

Vacation trips with children should include safety measures and caution. It never ceases to amaze me when I see young children wandering, unescorted, around a large hotel complex. We have taken an elevator and seen 6 or 7 year olds getting on alone. How can a parent let a child wander without adult supervision? Most hotels do not have lifeguards yet I still see children alone in the pool area. Do parents expect others to watch their child to keep them out of harm’s way? If lifeguards are provided, check to see what hours they work. Young children are easily tempted and cannot be counted on to avoid a glistening pool or entering a deserted video game room. Unlocking Opportunity By Frank J. Rich A recent visit to the South brought into focus the cultural prerogatives so common to American regions across the land. California is “laid back,” the Deep South is lackadaisical, and the Midwest is “downright honest and pure,” at least according to literature and folklore. Tennessee Williams, playwright, poet, and cultural commentator, was expression’s catalyst, painting his characters with the angular brush of an artist’s eye, poignant and without protection. Perhaps, it was his concern for “the depths and origin of human feelings and motivations” that revealed the sinew in his characters, who often wrangled with despair in words given meaning by powerful phrase of action. Stanley, in “A Streetcar Named Desire,” lamented over the loss of his relationship with the ever reaching and fawning Stella, as he called out plaintively to mark his deepest longings and desire for release in that single cry of her name as she withdrew with her son in her arms. His haunting drawl, penetrating and mysterious, made ordinary expression into art, and delivered phrase after phrase of infinite wisdom though often darkly stained. Coincidentally, while talking with a local on this recent road trip, I inquired over the locked gates in a nearby field. The locks would not have presented an unusual thing but were in stark contrast to the absence of them in the area. People there didn’t lock their doors or cars. Farm vehicles, including RTVs of various types, something youngsters in this area might find a temptation to borrow, were left unattended with the keys in the ignition. In commenting on it I asked if the neighbor next to me (everybody is a neighbor down there) knew the farmer who owned the cattle in the fields around us. They (fields) were surrounded by hundreds of acres just like them. He said: “Yup, but he’s locked ‘em up; now ain’t nobody can help him when he needs it.” It struck me that this commentator’s message may be useful to more than the farmer and his cattle, perhaps even helpful to local

businesses in general. Much of what we hold as individuals is held too closely. We seem to gather the means of convenience in every household as though counting on one’s neighbor for help is an anachronism. Garden tools, dog clippers, meat smokers and grills, ladders, pools, hot tubs, and more cars than family members, are duplicated in each household. On the commercial side, we tend not to have much to do with neighboring businesses, even though we opened next to them with purpose in mind. We don’t join to advertise, which saves money, or trade coupons, or for complimentary events. When presented with a customer we might react cautiously, spending those ﬁrst moments deciding if s/he is a buyer or browser. We leave them alone to decide (on their own) if what we’ve got is what they want. It’s interesting and sad, because buyers want to be engaged in “meaningful” exchanges with sellers. They don’t have much time to shop and are not very good at managing the time they have, so they’re looking for help. Local businesses advertise to draw customers, but too often miss how vitally important it is to do everything they can to make a visit to the store attractive to them. Until they get there you can’t help them at all; you can’t sell them anything. You might as well have a lock on the door. Maybe our neighbor to the south was making good sense. In the year ahead, now approaching the halfway mark, local business will beneﬁt from an extraordinary 2013 development. The net worth of American households rose $10 trillion. This means that consumption will rise to meet pent-up demand for things people did without for the past seven years. It also means that banks will loan more money to businesses, and that “local spending” will rise, where better than 85 percent of disposable income is spent. The message is clear: open up your minds, hearts, and bank accounts to embrace those who can help you grow share of market. Advertise, merchandise, and learn how to be customer-centric. Unlock all the doors that keep consumers from helping you help yourselves.

This is the season of scholarships, those prestigious parchments that pronounce the person on the receiving end as an exceptional learner. But what did the scholar learn? Knowing numbers and facts and theories and rules forms a formidable fulcrum for taming daily life, but such mechanical mastery is not a panacea. Fulfillment—financial and spiritual—finds its equilibrium through intellect, emotion, intuition, common sense and, one would hope, kindness. There actually are scholarships for kindness, and it would be unkind to argue against the advisability of handing out more of those to encourage a contagion. Put it this way: would you rather hang with someone brilliant but obnoxious, or with someone of average academic achievement who is kind and caring? That’s a no-brainer.

“Eighty-ﬁve percent of your financial success is due to skills in ‘human engineering,’ your personality and ability to communicate, negotiate, and lead.” So says research by the Carnegie Institute of Technology, as reported in Forbes magazine. He advocates that preparing young people to run the world is everyone’s business. He acts on the aphorism that a child shall lead us. Apart from parchment, if there is one thing graduates grasp, let it be the knowledge that book knowledge is not everything. It’s also knowing what you don’t know, and listening, and learning.
