Laughter Can Truly be the Best Medicine

Years ago my mom belonged to a very active, busy senior center in her home town. They had frequent guest speakers, gave interesting handout publications and planned an array of day trips and outings for their members to enjoy. One guest speaker she described talked about ways to relax, how to deal with stress, avoid anger and various topics on personal relationships and feelings. One topic discussed dealt with humor and how some senior citizens seemed to be short of this in part of their lives. I have seen this over the years in some of the programs senior family members do not care to watch, declaring “that’s not funny” or “I don’t get it”. True many sitcoms were based on age based situations that perhaps seniors were not going through any more. Programs like “The ” or ones dealing with children, divorced
centered detective programs might not be their “cup of tea”.
It has been proven that a hearty laugh can help reduce stress, elevate your mood, boost your immune system, lower your blood pressure and make you feel good. Often it can connect one to others and foster instant relax-
another area that eludes a senior, especially one living alone. Just how can a senior or anyone in fact expand a sense of humor?

everyday humor, it’s there. Observe young children and infants and that can make you smile just looking at their antics and hearing some of the things they come out with when they talk. Older readers may remember the talk show host, Art Linkletter. He made a living with a successful program called “Kids Say the Darndest Things” and it was really funny to watch! If you enjoy TV, watch more comedy shows and lighthearted programs. If you hear a funny joke or one liner, jot it down and share it with someone. Doesn’t matter if you get the punch line off a bit, as that will be funny, too! On a daily basis the TV and radio news might be gloomy and distressing, so try to avoid listening to these sad events on a continual

In the midst of an economic cold spell, no less the “hot n’ cold” market temperatures whipping it up, the expectations of spring inching its way toward us, the days getting longer, and the hope for an economic thaw growing energy, we take stock of what has drained
from our purses these last years. The exercise in assessment may be more John Naisbitt than Jay Leno, but necessary if not fun. What has happened in the “dreary years”— too many refuse to call the recent “worldwide depression” what it was—since 2007 sifted man, mechanism, and malodorous management and come up wanting. Assessment, though a staple of OD, is the “sine qua non” of vital organizations.
When we lift a handful of dirt from the garden as spring approaches, the assay is felt in the friable content of the dirt. To do well, plants must be in fertile soil, containing no less than nitrogen, potassium, phosphorous, and a balanced pH--so too organizations. Endowed of the “right stuff” they
employees, vendors, community, and nation. Absent the minimum constituents they will falter and die.
