LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR greeting

Hi Seals, welcome to the holiday season!

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season.

For this month of service we will have a ice skating fundraiser in the month of December!

This is a fun opportunity tofellow donate towards charity and meet members in Staten Island!

In addition to the fundraiser, for this month I want all my juniors, sophomores, or freshmen to start considering running for higher office.

While there is still time, you should research these roles and really consider running for Lieutenant Governor, District positions, or club positions.

You can always reach out to the current representatives if you would like to learn more about the position.

Lastly, don't forget to pay your dues!

The early bird deadline already passed but you still have the opportunity to pay if you would like!

Reach out to your club president or treasurer if you need guidance!

NOVEMBER DIVISIONAL MEETING

On November 22nd, Division 10 held its traditional inperson divisional meeting at 84 New Dorp Plaza. Initially, we waited for members to settle down at the meeting. After everyone was seated, our LTG commenced the meeting by beginning with divisional updates and events. Some of our active events include: Charity Miles, Key Buddies, Project Support the Local, and the Ice Skating Event Fundraiser. Once the updates were completed, a brief introduction and explanation of the roles of a Lieutenant Governor was expressed in order to begin training for those interested in running for the position in the upcoming term. We received a great response as more than 5 members signed the interest form! Furthermore, Presidents presented individual club updates; many commented that returning to in-person club activities has provided a positive outlook on their club; therefore, it is an honor to say that Key Club is thriving in Staten Island. Afterwards, Mr. Gioia had his sentiment which thrived into a very conversational and lively session. Before adjourning the meeting, a Q&A session was held in order to address several questions concerning events or lieutenant governor interest.

ICE SKATING FUNDRAISER division-wide

Hi Seals, we are happy to inform you that we will host an ice skating fundraiser. This will be an opportunity for you to have fun and donate to charity! All proceeds will go directly towards the charity.

Date: December 18th Time: 2:30-4:30pm Location: 3080 Arthur Kill Rd, Staten Island, NY 10309 Cost: $13

About the Charity: All proceeds will be donated to the organization called The Street Vendor Project. This NYC based organization strives to help street vendors throughout New York City to remain up and running!

Payment Method: Payment will be collected by your club officials (IN PERSON).

Please bring cash with an envelope with your name on it. Payment will differ per school, reach out to your president.

PROJECT SUPPORT THE LOCAL Our division will be working to Support the Local. For this project we will have a competition on who "donates" the most money to local businesses. In addition, we will be creating flyers to spread awareness about this business.

REMOTE SERVICE Charity Miles Charity Miles is an application that gathers funds for various charities by means of walking. By tracking the miles you walk, $0.25 per mile is donated to the selected charity, THON. This is a student-run organization that helps families who had to battle through childhood cancer. This includes emotional and financial support.

JOIN OUR TEAM: DIVISION 10 7 Cups 7 Cups is a messaging system that allows for those who are emotionally distressed to have a platform to discuss any problem or issue going on in their life.

Volunteers must attend a 30 minute course to qualify as a listener to effectively provide emotional and moral support.

Send your presidents your participation for hours credit.

CURTIS HIGH SCHOOL MAKING CARDS FOR

HEALTHCARE WORKERS

During one of Curtis High School’s club meetings, Key Clubbers, from both our 9th and 10th period meetings, made

cards to healthcare workers to thank them for their hard work before, during, and after the peak of the COVID pandemic! One ofHealthcare the cards,Worker, writtenThank by ouryou ViceforPresident, wrote, “Dear the countless hours you have worked helping the community and patients.

We are grateful for your incredible work.”

Members were given 15 minutes of community service for every card they were able to make.

NEW DORP HIGH SCHOOL 72ND ANNUAL LOU MARLI TURKEY DAY TROT

On Thanksgiving Day this year, November 25th, members of my

club and I went to the 72nd Annual Lou Marli Turkey Day Trot.

InStaten this event, runners from around Island and beyond come to Clove Lakes Park every year to compete in a three mile run around the park.

These runs are organized into different age groups at numerous time intervals.

The members of my club and I were given various roles to make sure the event runs smoothly, making it easier for the runners who traveled to compete in this run. These roles included directing the race at different areas and making sure the finish line was clear of people and animals for the runners.

Personally, I stood at the finish line / starting point and moved children and pets away from the path when the runners were about to cross the starting point for another lap orof nearing the finish line.

It was very interesting to see people all age groups competing in these runs and I was surprised totheirseesixties! youngIpeople from my school and even people nearing thoroughly enjoyed volunteering at this event, and I hope to volunteer again next Thanksgiving, or even participate in the run itself!

TOTTENVILLE HIGH SCHOOL

CLEAN UPS

InTottenville the monthHigh of October, School hosted their first in-person events.

We had park clean ups on October 6th at Olmsted-Beil House Park and on October 16th at Oakwood Beach.

13 people came to support on both days.

We also collected anecdotes from those who participated.

Laila wrote “My favorite part of this event was seeing the historical buildings.

I still can’t believe that the house was built in the 1600s and is still standing.

Overall my experience with this event was amazing.”

Matthew also wrote“My favorite part of the event was helping the community.

I had a fun time cleaning up.”

Everyone was engaged and motivated in the effort to remove plastic and make our parks clean.

We also had beach clean ups on October 23 and October 30th both at the Conference House Park.

The Conference House Park located in Staten Island holds a weekly volunteer event called “Buckets for 'The Blue'”.

Volunteers help clean the shore line of Conference House Park's largest natural resource, the Raritan Bay. We are given buckets and pickers to remove some of the increasing amounts of 'small plastic litter/debris'.

11 people came to support both days, and we a lso recorded everyone’s experience.

Dorcas wrote “Spending time with my friends picking up litter along the beach was my favorite part.

Afterwards my friends and I walked through the park and along the beach which was nice also.”

Alessia said “My favorite part of this event was hanging out with my friends and having a blast while, creating a cleaner environment.”

Overall, Tottenville is very proud to have their Key Clubbers be so active in the community, and Key Club looks forward to more inperson events.

STATEN ISLAND TECH. HIGH SCHOOL

FIRST IN PERSON CLUB MEETING On November 23rd, the

SIT Key Club held our first IN PERSON meeting!

After multitudes of online Zoom meetings during quarantine, we were finally able to get our club charter and subsequently transition back to in person meetings.

The reception for the first meeting was exceptional; over 220 people applied to attend.

The first 120 tickets for the first session were sold out in merely 6 hours.

Because of the amazing reception and interest, all officers had to present either individually or with a partner in separate rooms (twice) in order to accommodate for everyone.

We booked 2 rooms along with the school library in advance to ensure everyone had a seat.

At the meeting, we went over typical introductory Key Club formalities, and introduced Key Club toconcept the Freshman and sophomores.

We reexplained the of dues and allowed members to pay anytime they are available via the school’s SO store.

During the actual meeting, transitioning from one group to the next was a hassle but in the end everything cleared out.

The transition between the groups was a bit crowded but overall successful.

After giving out socials and introducing our Discord and new google classroom which has grown to over 300 members and 210 members respectively we took unofficial club photos with the individual groups and wrapped up the meeting.

Finally we debriefed with our advisor and began planning for the upcoming meetings.

Our next meeting will be on December 7th and we hope to see many more there as well!

GOVERNOR'S PROJECT Thirst Project

This organization conducts its efforts to terminate the global water crisis via a team of young adults.

This is crucial as clean water is scarce in many areas of the world which leads to much sanitation concerns.

We, as Key Clubbers, will help raise funds for this outstanding cause and contribute further to the efforts of providing clean water to all!

The District Project for this year will be Alex's Lemonade Stand.

This organization was created by Alex Scott who suffered from neuroblastoma.

The mission of this organization is to aid families affected by childhood cancer and fund towards the research.

DISTRICT ENDORSED projects

KAMP KIWANIS Kamp Kiwanis is aimed at providing fun, physical exercise and

adventure.

It strives to afford opportunities to participate in a creative outdoor group experience in a democratic setting and develop characteristics of leadership and fair play.

KIWANIS PEDIATRICS TRAUMA CENTER

The Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center is a clinic located in Long Island, New York that is dedicated to serving unique care for children in extreme situations (e.g. trauma injuries).

It also serves a number of other functions, such as outreach to parents and educational programs.

THE PEDIATRIC LYME DISEASE FOUNDATION

The Lyme Disease Project was quickly set up to help pay for medical treatment for children with this disease.

Unfortunately most insurance companies do not pay for its treatment, which is very expensive.

As of May 2014, the foundation had paid $269,000 for pediatric treatment.

Worldwide Day of Play reinforces Nickelodeon’s mission to make the world a more playful place by leading active, playful events across the country.

Nickelodeon’s Get Dirty campaign seeks to educate kids, families and teachers about what they can do to help protect the planet in fun, mindful ways.

US ARMY

The U.S. Army empowers tomorrow’s leaders by offering advanced schooling for today’s top careers.

Not only that, programs like the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) and March2Success.com allow students to go to college debt free and excel in the classroom with helpful academic resources.

THIRST PROJECT

Thirst Project is a nonprofit organization that works with the support of young people to END the global water crisis by building freshwater wells in developing communities that need safe, clean drinking water.

Why Water?

Health and Sanitation: Waterborne diseases kill more children every single year than HIV, Malaria, and all world violence combined.

Small children typically do not have strong enough immune systems to fight diseases like cholera, dysentery, or schistosomiasis.By providing a community with safe drink By providing a community with safe drinking water, disease rates can drop by up to 88% virtually overnight!

Child mortality rates can drop up to 90%overnight!

Clean water also plays an incredibly critical role in effectively treating and managing HIV/AIDS in rural communities.

The Kingdom of Eswatini, for example, has the single-highest-density population of HIV/AIDS in the world.

For a person with HIV/AIDS, even if you have access to medical treatment or antiretroviral medication, but are still forced to drink dirty water from contaminated sources, the diseases in the water you drink will actually kill you faster than AIDS itself.i
