Hi Seals, welcome to a new month of service! I wanted to start off this month's update with a huge thank you! I would like to commend you all for the amazing job you have all been doing throughout this service year. All your work does not go unnoticed.

I encourage you to keep going even though this year has been a challenging one. With this month, we have a lot of new opportunities to look forward to.

This month we will be having the District Fall Conference and our CPR Training event. As we head into this second half of the service year I would like for all of us to set a goal to start fundraising more! In addition to our service, we want to share donations with charities so start searching for some fundraising ideas. As always, please do not hesitate to reach out if you ever have any questions or just want to talk, I am here to aid!

On October 18th, Division 10 held its first divisional meeting in person since the pandemic where 26 people were present. As we welcomed members and officers into Mr. Gioia’s space, seeing people’s physical bodies and faces was like a breath of fresh air compared to letter icons on a screen. Once everyone was settled in, Maggie Reznik, the Lieutenant Governor, initiated the meeting by having everyone recite the Key Club Pledge proudly and emitted friendly energy into the environment to make everyone feel comfortable. Our Lieutenant Governor shared the month of October’s updates. The meeting proceeded with specific updates from each high school to convey their events and meetings planned for the month and crucial statistics from September. Furthermore, it was time for Mr. Gioia’s spotlight in which we discussed funding, budgets, bus sign-up forms for the CPR Training event, and more.

Nonetheless, after a comprehensive and productive meeting, we shared our goodbye’s and thanked one another for their time, hoping to see everyone at November’s Division 10 Meeting.

How to participate?

1. Show us your donations! Send a picture of your receipt from a local business.

2. Show advocacy! If you want to take a step further, make any type of media to spread awareness about the business.

OUR REMOTE 7 CUPS 7 Cups is a messaging system that allows for those who are emotionally distressed to have a platform to discuss any problem or issue going on in their life.

Volunteers must attend a 30 minute course to qualify as a listener to effectively provide emotional and moral support.

Send your presidents your participation for hours credit.

CHARITY MILES Charity Miles is an application that gathers funds for various charities by means of walking. By tracking the miles you walk, $0.25 per mile is donated to the selected charity, THON. This is a student-run organization that helps families who had to battle through childhood cancer. This includes emotional and financial support.

TOTTENVILLE KEY LUB GENERAL MEETING C

This October, our Key Club was able to hold a total of three meetings. All three were held in the cafeteria, which were very full as over 120 people attended each meeting!

Our last meeting of October, which was held on the 29th, had a few changes that occurred as instead of using the microphones to speak to everyone in the cafeteria as a whole, each officer went to a separate table and spoke to a smaller group of people. By doing so, we aimed to have a more intimate setting where we would be able to direct our focus to more people while not having to talk over people. Because it was our first time holding the meeting this way, there were a few bumps along the way. However, at the same time, it had lots of benefits as well due to the reason being that a number of people found it easier to talk to the officers and share their thoughts and/or questions. Aside from this, this meeting was also the first day we collected dues. Despite it only being the first day there was a significant amount of people that brought their dues, and we expect more to bring it in as we hold “office hours” during the school day so that those who aren’t able to attend the meetings have a way to hand it in.

KIWANIS VETERAN S DAY FLAG EVENT '

On November 6th, members from the Staten Island Technical High School Key Club went to the annual Veterans Day Flag Event. All the volunteers who went were from the Staten Island Technical High School Key Club! This event has been a tradition and staple among the Staten Island Kiwanis and Key Club members. Every year, the adults and volunteers meet up at Li Greeci’s Staaten to commemorate the work and service of our country's veterans. During the event, volunteers from Key Club helped put up flags around the restaurant, each of which bore the name of a distinguished veteran who had served their country.

Incidentally, many of us gladly helped the families of both living and deceased veterans find their respective veteran’s flag to take pictures of. Once we finished hanging up the flags, we listened to a bagpipes performance and several speeches in honor of the veteran’s service.The event concluded with a speech of gratitude given by the North Shore Kiwanis members, and a recital of the national anthem. After honorary concessions, we all thanked the veterans for the example they’ve set for us all; we owe all veterans, past and present, our country’s freedom, built upon the foundations of their fortitude and sacrifice.

Key Clubbers work on and hand out “Key Club Compliments”, which are green bags filled with green candy (Hershey’s Kisses wrapped in green foil paper & appleflavored Now and Laters)! They do this in honor of National Bullying Prevention Month

which was last month and for mental health awareness, which is represented by the color green. This was to compliment (no pun intended) our Mental Health Awareness theme and to hopefully make the days of Curtis students and staff! :)

OLMSTED-BEIL HOUSE PARK RESTORATION The Olmsted Beil House is both a state and

nationally recognized historic site. This park is named after its most prominent owner, Frederick Law Olmsted, and Carlton and Louise Beil.

Frederick Olmsted most notably known for the designing of both the Central Park and Prospect Park. During this event, we were tasked with helping bring this parks beauty to its former glory.

After years of natural disasters and neglect has taken its toll there was an overgrowth of weeds, invasive species, and logs distracting from the beauty of the park. From here, we would then go on to replant and actually help build structures.

To explain, next year marks the 200 year anniversary of the Olmsted Beil House Park.

Therefore, the work we did would help set-up for the parks event next year. Personally, for this event I was tasked with helping plow dirt within the entrance of the park. To explain, by using a shovel or other farming tool we helped dig out the ground surrounding the walk way of a park. This included removing rocks, soil, and weeds. From here we went on to placing fertilizer which would be intstrumental in the development of future plants. Finally, we actually got to help plant various trees and flowers helping beautify the parks walkway. Overall, this was a terrific event teaching me many valuable farming skills which I expect to never use again was fun learning.

This organization conducts its efforts to terminate the global water crisis via a team of young adults.

This is crucial as clean water is scarce in many areas of the world which leads to much sanitation concerns. We, as Key Clubbers, will help raise funds for this outstanding cause and contribute further to the efforts of providing clean water to all!

The District Project for this year will be Alex's Lemonade Stand. This organization was created by Alex Scott who suffered from neuroblastoma. The mission of this organization is to aid families affected by childhood cancer and fund towards the research.

KAMP KIWANIS

Kamp Kiwanis is aimed at providing fun, physical exercise and adventure. It strives to afford opportunities to participate in a creative outdoor group experience in a democratic setting and develop characteristics of leadership and fair play.

KIWANIS PEDIATRI TRAUMA ENTER C

The Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center is a clinic located in Long Island, New York that is dedicated to serving unique care for children in extreme situations (e.g. trauma injuries). It also serves a number of other functions, such as outreach to parents and educational programs.

THE PEDIATRI LYME DISEASE FOUNDATION C

The Lyme Disease Project was quickly set up to help pay for medical treatment for children with this disease. Unfortunately most insurance companies do not pay for its treatment, which is very expensive. As of May 2014, the foundation had paid $269,000 for pediatric treatment.

INTERNATIONAL PARTNERS NI KOLEDEON C

Nickelodeon currently presents two major campaigns each year that encourage action in kids globally. Worldwide Day of Play reinforces Nickelodeon’s mission to make the world a more playful place by leading active, playful events across the country. Nickelodeon’s Get Dirty campaign seeks to educate kids, families and teachers about what they can do to help protect the planet in fun, mindful ways.

US ARMY The U.S. Army empowers tomorrow’s leaders by offering advanced schooling for today’s top careers. Not only that, programs like the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) and March2Success.com allow students to go to college debt free and excel in the classroom with helpful academic resources.

INTERNATIONAL PARTNERS THIRST PROJE T C

Thirst Project is a nonprofit organization that works with the support of young people to END the global water crisis by building freshwater wells in developing communities that need safe, clean drinking water. Why Water? Health and Sanitation: Waterborne diseases kill more children every single year than HIV, Malaria, and all world violence combined. Small children typically do not have strong enough immune systems to fight diseases like cholera, dysentery, or schistosomiasis.By providing a community with safe drink By providing a community with safe drinking water, disease rates can drop by up to 88% virtually overnight! Child mortality rates can drop up to 90%- overnight! Clean water also plays an incredibly critical role in effectively treating and managing HIV/AIDS in rural communities. The Kingdom of Eswatini, for example, has the single-highest-density population of HIV/AIDS in the world. For a person with HIV/AIDS, even if you have access to medical treatment or antiretroviral medication, but are still forced to drink dirty water from contaminated sources, the diseases in the water you drink will actually kill you faster than AIDS itself.i
