ABOUT the

Where to find the shattered pieces and fix them?

The face painted with fear of relentless violence, commo tion, and grief is still in an ongoing search for the missing trail of hope. Colors representing the soul of a youth call for the best alternative to reckon these woes of the past. The tremor came to shatter even the faintest hope, breaking the inno cence and vision of a sole dreamer.

Now is the starting point for the entire youth to rise with a much stronger anatomy and seek full awareness of what’s happening around. This is a clamor that enables them to stand up for what they believe in and continue to grow with out being hindered by the obstructions along the way.

From taking a step towards starting things anew, one question came to light prompting us to get bolder: where can these missing pieces be found?

The answer lies within us, in our eagerness to uplift our selves and make the current downfall an inspiration to trace where the problem is coming from and start from there.

The future needs us now. Let us be responsive to the things that matter most nowadays. Our actions reflect the view of our future. When things begin to fall, pick them up and don’t miss the chance to recover. There will always be something that can be done to prevent these pieces from fall ing. It’s a matter of taking the lead. Stand. Go around. Make a sound. Take charge and make a difference.

The best way to grasp our desire is to have optimism within ourselves.

As human beings, we aim for success. On one hand, we are entangled in circumstanc es that get in the way with our aspirations. The waves strike hard that they could erode boulder; the challenges attack rigidly that they could break goal. But one thing stands firm – our hopes. Our optimism keeps us going. This is our battle cry.

The creation of this magazine issue of The Courier turned out to be a tough one. Converting our ideas into print was almost unrealizable given the many hurdles, right in the initial stage of the making. Due to technicalities, it took time time to establish the new editorial board. With the installa tion of the new editorial board, major adjustments had to be done with the paper during the press work. The countless revisions, hardships, and sleepless nights were our fuel to push through. The bitter sweet efforts were silent witness to how every single chance for the betterment of this mag num opus was seized with hope along the way. Our optimism drove us to present to you, Norwe sians, this magazine creation.

We, The Courier, wanted this issue to be informative and entertaining, and at the same time useful. Articles written on the warm pages of this volume offer topics that touch local, national and even international subjects from deep perspec tives. Your past feedback is our criteria to cope with greater heights in campus journalism.

To all the passionate editors and writers behind this creation, your efforts are not in vain. With hope for the best of the NwSSU community, let us continue our optimism towards excellence.

University, the quality of educa tion, the infrastructure and facil ities, and other services it offers, have greatly improved. On the other side and upon deep thought, an important question could be asked: Do we, students, still per form our duties and responsibili ties to the university?

Any Norwesian can solely embody the aspirations of NwSSU as long as he or she will carry out the duties and responsibilities of students, which are stated in the NwSSU’s Student Handbook. The institution is building the foundation to bridge the university to international standards. By this, it is our duty as students to par take in the efforts of the school to harness our portentials and fill the void. We believe that the students, too, have an equal responsibility and accountability in this road to excellence.

As students, we are grant ed the opportunity to go to school for free and to experience the services offered by the univer sity. However, it doesn’t mean that we, Norwesians, can just do everything we want to. Alongside with such privileges, we need to conform to the university’s policies and do our part as students.

Meanwhile, the teachers and the institution should also do their part in inculcating the sense of responsibility among students. This may not only be done, one time, during the institutional orientation for students, but each time the school has the chance to. Also, the school policies should be implemented firmly and con sistently. If students see that the university is loose in performing its obligations along these concerns, chances are, students will not be driven to do theirs. We believe that the involvement of both the stu

dents and the university personnel (administrators, faculty and staff) is crucial for the overall progress of the university. The institution’s strong policy implementation will only be realized, if and only if, those who are required to follow are prompted to follow and fulfill their responsibilities.

Taking responsibility is not only fulfilling one’s sworn duty as a student. It is also fulfilling the bigger goals of the University and the society as a whole. Similarly, the labor of those in the academe is what NwSSU needs. In the end, we are all benefactors of this propagation. Together, let us fertil ize our dreams to ensure a fruitful future.

During the cele bration of the World Press Freedom Day on the 3rd of May, the United Nations highlighted the freedom of information as a human right. Freedom of expres sion is a fundamental human right as stated in the Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: ‘Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interfer ence and to seek, receive, and impact information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.’

Ensuring press freedom around the world is a priority. Independent, free and pluralistic press is at the center of good gover nance in democracies since then. Free press can ensure transparency, accountability and the rule of law, promote participation in public and political discourse, and con tribute to the fight against poverty.

‘NOT DEAD’

responsible journalism is powerful and accounts to shine light on the most pressing issues of our day. It seeks to inform, ignite, inspire and spark debate. However, despite strong protection of press freedom through the Constitution, press freedom organizations have found themselves increasingly concerned about the threats that they face.

In a nation where freedom of the press is already under grave threat, the revocation of an inde pendent publication’s license to operate and the proposed amend ment to the Bill of Rights are push ing journalists further into margins. While the Constitution of the Phil ippines guarantees freedom of the press and the country’s media landscape is quite diverse, journalists nevertheless face complex arrays of threats. Libel and adver tising boycotts are common, and the country ranks fifth in the world in terms of impunity for killing journalists since the new administration takes the office.

The Philippine govern ment is taking things a step further ensuring to mandate “responsible speech” for all the citizens. The House of Representatives has moved to amend the constitutional provision on press freedom (Article III, Section 4), which includes: free dom of speech, of expression, of the press, or the right of the people

to assemble peaceably and peti tion the government for redress of grievances. It is further supported by the international law regarding press freedom, which provides that: To put human rights, in which there is the right to freedom of speech and the press, into full effect, the role of all State is always needed, because the law on human rights, is held responsible to guarantee human rights.

Moreover, freedom of the press seeks to protect the right to obtain and publish information or opinions without government censorship or fear of punishment. Censorship occurs when the gov ernment interferes or examines publications and productions and prohibits to publish information opposing the government.

Despite having these laws and the Constitution, journalists receiving threats are more aggressive in writing for the common good of everyone and to protect their rights. However, they have become increasingly concerned with the challenges and threats they are facing. Threats for press freedom is not only happening in the Philippines, but all throughout the world.

Ever since the Marcos Regime, the world has witnessed press being controlled and manipulated by the government to publish

fake information and prohibit to publish articles against the govern ment, which therefore, removed the purpose of press freedom in the Philippines during that time.

And now, with the assump tion of President Rodrigo Duterte to office, press freedom in the Phil ippines has taken a further blow, similar to that of the Marcos regime. The Duterte administration goes after media outlets that criticize his policies, creating an increasingly chilled atmosphere for the country’s independent journalists and free speech. Abuse from the govern ment may have led to self-censor ship and has broader implications for the trust of the media by some of the population. However, this rhetoric also appears to have galvanized the energy and resources of many media outlets and journalists.

Press freedom is not only for journalists and writers, but also for citizens to participate, to ex press and be heard for increased sense of ownership and empower ment of human rights, the right to information and expression through a free and secure publication in the press.

OPINION 4

“Where have all the flowers gone, long time passing...,” goes the line of a classic and sad song.

The Philippines is rich not only in natural resources but also in culture and values. But sadly, these culture and values are now slowly deteriorating and fading. These assets are in danger of losing essence in the lives of the Filipino people.

Filipino culture and values have been part of our daily lives. These principles and standards of behavior have been instilled in us by our parents for us to be mor ally upright individuals in a highly moralistic society. They have been emblazoned in our hearts and minds by our forefathers coming from generations before us. Some of the unique Filipino values that we have are respect for others (pag galang sa nakakatanda), empathy (pag-intindi sa nararamdaman ng iba), deep regard for fellow humans (pakikipagkapwa-tao), and many more to mention. These are just some values that should prevail in the generation after us.

Looking at the austere condition of Filipino values, we can immediately say that our practice today, is far different from it was before. We seem to have failed in identifying in us Filipino qualities that we should uphold as true Fili pinos. It is justifiable that there are

relevant factors that weaken the Filipino values. One factor is the outside influences through which we are able to emulate more the ways of foreigners (Westerners, Koreans, among others), setting aside our traditional customs, tra ditions and values. Another is the changes brought by technology. We cannot deny how much technology has made revolutionary changes in our lives, and its influences (good or bad) extend to our value system.

More than all these, in the Philippines, one procurator of the weakening Filipino values is the foul-mouthed President Rodrigo Duterte whose speeches are peppered with insults and curses. Yet, they are often received with cheers and laughter from the audience.

We often heard President Rodrigo Duterte cursing and giving pronouncements that threaten to “kill” his opponents - the human rights groups, United Nations offi cials, critical government officials, media organizations and journal ists. On many occasions, President Duterte openly expressed his antagonism towards the Roman Catholic Church, insinuating that the priests are mostly homosexuals who have secret relationships with women; calling bishops “greedy;” and urging people to “rob” and even “murder” the clergymen. Worse, he commited blasphemy by mocking the sacred Bible and calling the

Catholic God as stupid.

An expert said that the unpleasant public behavior of the president is affecting the youth and students. At the weekly Tapatan sa Artistocrat Forum in Manila, former St. Scholastic’s College President, Sister Mary John Mananzan said, “In fact, because he is president, he should not speak like that. Masyadong (malaki) ang impluwen sya (His influence is too great).”

This act of the president, being seated in the highest position in the land, has an impact strong enough to weaken the Filipino values. All of his speeches are being aired on the national tele vision and radio, and everybody gets to witness how the head of the executive branch of the Philippine government behaves. Even the children of this generation, who are not supposed to hear those lines from him, get a dose of the poison aggravated by the reality of extra judicial killings in the country under his governance.

It’s really alarming how the youth could perceive Duterte’s lines (cursing) as normal. This is why families and school administrators play a crucial role in shaping the youth’s behavior. Both parties must extend equal force in teaching and reiterating the importance of prac ticing and preserving the Filipino values.

THE DOWNFALL OF FILIPINO VALUES

If the youth will be stuck in the mindset that Duterte’s words and behavior are just normal and acceptable, it is the cruelty and hatred that will be instilled in their minds. In this sense, the values that we ought to teach them would just be thrown down the drain.

Therefore, the President, should be mindful of his speech and ways, which should be in accordance with his position and influence to the country’s populace. If he will not do so, we will lose the Philippines and our treasured Filipino values. Respect for life will have its downfall, a sad reality for us, Filipinos.

The night was filled with silence and upright vibe without anyone else but me inside the house. My eyes were held captive when I saw something hilarious on the television. It was something we would not imagine would exist on earth. I even laughed at it at first because of how hilarious it looked. It was a bug-eyed Japanese-designed character who would ask someone to do something that might hurt other people or himself. Suddenly, I had goosebumps all over my body as I saw how Momo Challenge took the life of an in nocent child due to its plethora of dangerous demands. It was an appalling occurrence that I, as a concerned individual, would not wish to happen again, not again!

Through this experience, I came to a realization: We should live each day to save our existence from this delusion. Technology may bring everything that we want, but not all that it offers are safe. This is a strong message that we want to share to everyone who wants to live a more safe and sound life, far

from harm and despair. I believe this is rooted not only in the harmful applications alone but also in the parents who might have missed something important in the upbringing of their children.

There is a reason why there are more teen suicide attempts across the world. Kids nowadays will do anything they want to seek for people’s attention by all means to implicitly show that they are in distress or something is wrong. Before a teen joins a suicide pact, it is possible that he or she has been bullied in school or in any other environment. Varied studies have established the connection between suicide and bullying, whether online or offline. According to a recent paper by U.S. academics as cited in Bloomberg Opinion, about one in five American middle and high school students reported being sub jected to serious degrees of cyber bullying. This tends to lead to “suicidal ideation” – thoughts of killing oneself – though not to the same extent as real-life threats and beat

ings at school. For this, we need to be vigilant especially towards young people to prevent them from becoming victims of senseless acts of bullying and to help them overcome their problems.

Doomed are the people who live in the deceiving world covered with fake innocent mask of harm and despair. It made me understand that what we see on the internet are just illusions, traps that lure us to perils yet unknown to us. Thus, we should not be complacent about these potential dangers. Before we know it, we have already fallen prey to the hoaxes of this technology. It must be the people who control the apps, and not the apps to control the people. This threat has no specific target, but if you fall for it you will be fooled or worse die out of the blue.

The recent incident on suicide allegedly connected to Momo Challenge has been a big deal to everyone because of the huge effect to the children. It made

a noise on social media for several weeks. Some of the posts were not taken serious ly, but this must not be the case. We should be tactful as active participants in the dig ital environment to neutralize dramatic reactions and wrong perceptions on the said issue.

This purported chal lenge came with a parental panic on social media. Hence, the authority reinforced their solution to stop the notion that this alone can make their children be in danger. From the perspective of concerned citizens, serious efforts should be made in establishing an open dialogue with children and taking advantage of on line parental controls.

It seems like people have not yet realized that some of the things they see on social media are hoax es, specifically the Momo Challenge. They had been deceived by the circulating videos. To this date, it is not clear how the Momo Chal lenge originated and who is/ are to blame for its alleged negative effects, given the varied stories. An article in Philippine Daily In quirer reported that the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) had dismissed the online challenge as just a “hoax meant to cause fears among parents.” This suggests again that the people, most espe cially parents, should be more vigilant, in monitoring

their children’s online activi ties.

Although there is no clear connection between sui cide and the said “challenge,” still we need to be more conscious of the possible ill-effects of the social media.

To protect the children means doing what is necessary to prevent their exposure to harmful digital contents. Parents should therefore exert control in terms of the time allotment for internet use and the kind of materials their children are exposed to. Specifically, the minors need guidance in discerning which digital materials are appropri ate for their age. For recre ations, parents may teach their children to play games and find other alternatives to divert children’s attention. It is a vital role for the parents to guide their children all the time. Lastly, carers should think twice in passing the gadget to the child and think of the child’s safety.

It’s a cruel world of technology out there. We need to fortify our children’s defense against the dangers lurking some where.

The traffic rules are our shields and eyes on the road, and we must do our jobs in safeguarding ourselves and our streets. Watch Where You’re Going: Traffic Rules in Sight 11 FEATURE

Toooot! A CAPOSO came blowing his whistle at our direction.

We just haphazardly neglected his warning and we rushed towards the “No Entry” zone of the street when we, somehow, collided into one of the tri cycles going in the opposite direction. The CAPOSO officer then caught us up and immediately scolded us saying: “Why did you even attempt to evade us? Are you fugitives with criminal records?”

“No we’re not,” my friend replied in a discern ing tone. “Was it really neccessary to ream us out knowing we’re just mere students?”

To cut the long story short, we got the short end of the stick, violated some traffic rules, and were escorted towards the CAPOSO office. There we received an earful of reprimands and we were made to pay seemingly large fine for all we did.

The bigger picture in this narrative is that we failed to see the importance of the traffic rules that are being implemented in our streets and cities. Sometimes, we turn a blind eye towards street sig nages and the rules being carried out by enforcers and other officials.

Traffic rules are both the laws and the infor mal rules that have been developed over time to fa cilitate the orderly and timely flow of traffic. With the advent of new technologies, traffic flow has improved significantly and paved the way to the construction of more highways and bridges.

Trafffic rules and regulations have been es tablished not simply to punish violators but to ensure travel safety and efficiency, especially in busy areas. It is important to note that drivers are not the only ones obliged to be familiar with these fundamentals. Everyone - pedestrians, cyclists - should be made aware that there are certain controls to keep in mind when taking the streets.

To prevent road accidents, motorists should be more careful, considerate and patient. There

would be times when our patience would be tested during our encounters on the road. People should also be reminded that they should follow traffic rules to avoid certain penalties that come with their violations.

Accidents have been directly linked to those who recklessly tweak the motor to the maximum. In an MMDA study, 4 in every 100,000 Filipinos died due to road crashes in Metro Manila alone. In the same study, three cities have posted 5-digit figures in the number of vehicular collisions, with Quezon City having the most with 35, 494 and accounting for a third of the total road crashes in the metro. These incidents have led to 132 fatal cases, 4,729 non-fatal ones, and a total of 30,633 damaged properties.

Samar is no exemption, with reports of local vehicular accidents ranging from motorcycles, cars, and buses. A report revealed that one person was found dead while several others were injured in a collision between two Samar Bus Line buses in Barangay, Binanalan, Sta. Rita, Samar last July 23, 2017 (sunstar.com.ph). As a whole, these road acci dents are alarmingly becoming a nuisance not only in bustling cities but also in the provincial setting.

The bottomline is that we should not turn a blind eye towards the traffic rules set before us. Go ing back to my story, the same rules did not hinder me and my friend from having a good time, chugging down that ice-cold drink that we were still able to enjoy after our rare encounter with the traffic enforcer. These traffic rules are only meant to keep us safe and to protect the people we might hurt in the pro cess of satisfying ourselves.

The traffic rules are our shields and eyes on the road, and we must do our jobs in safeguarding ourselves and our streets.

NwSSU Singers: The Tale ofChasing theStars

I opened the windows and looked up at the sky. In its darkness, I saw the stars flaunting their lights. As I was keenly gazing at them, a thought suddenly occured to me - a star, a blithesome astro nomical object that shines luminously, an insignia of something that is in a pinnacle of success and something that is certainly in the scope of the limelight. As I kept my astromancy mode on, I had an epiphany about the star as a sym bol of success and representation of resilience, faith, and hard work. Beyond the bounds, a star is proof that the darkness can be a positive thing. Why? Because stars can’t shine without darkness. For a star to be born, one thing must happen: a gaseous nebula must collapse. This is not a destruction, this is birth - a new beginning.

13 FEATURE

In the past years, the chorale of Northwest Samar State University was like in a cloudy sky, a hiding star that didn’t want to shine. The star was once blazing, but had vanished through time. Just like a real star that dies when it exhausts its nuclear fuel, this organization once went to the phase of obscurity. Hanging on the hope of scintillating again, the star that this family bears had always been there. However, it remained under the radar, not shining and far from publicity. The situation had always been this way until a blessing in disguise came in the picture. The road to the resurgence of this star started with a man, a man fueled with passion to revive the institution’s flickering glow, a man in the person of Mr. Jonathan Capeding - Robles.

With the reincarnation of this star, comes a total rebranding. From being known as the Campus Chorus Organization, it rises again, this time to be known as Northwest Samar State University Singers. It seeming ly formed a constellation, a group of stars. From a large number of stars only nineteen remained, nineteen singers that have become stars in their own ways but needed a little more fuel to flash their shiniest lights.

The transition period was not a oneday work. It required days, months, and even years to reach the target. The first few months were like looking in the sky without stars, dull and boring. There were many reasons for the choir members to be passive at the start such as the hefty schedule of some members, experiencing “chorale culture” shock, and the different kind of discipline applied by the choirmaster during rehearsals. Despite all these factors, quitting never really crossed their minds, for they believed that they were building a guild of fighters, not quitters. They had to trust the process and start believing in themselves. This way, they could shine as one. With fate and faith combined, the once dim star has awakened and has come back to the vast sky, now shining more brightly than ever before.

Not long after its rebirth, the NwSSU Singers would face its first major challenge as it competed with other bright stars in the re

gion. Despite the fact that this chorale group of NwSSU was seemingly still a newbie then, its members, armed with determination and some training acquired from voice workshops, still gave it a “go.” Giving their rendition of some songs, they sang their hearts out and proved everyone during the competition that they have the heart of a champion. For the first time in history, the chorale of Northwest Samar State University triumphed a choir competition in the Regional Philippine As sociation of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC).

From one competition to another, the stakes were higher this time, for they would battle it out with the best established per forming choirs in the country at the National PASUC. From the gained exposure and con fidence in their last feat, the NwSSU Singers were head over heels as they brought the banner, not just of the NwSSU but the whole of Region 8. Even if in the end they failed to bring home the title, it’s the humility, sports manship, and camaraderie they earned during the nationals that made them a winner.

Who would have imagined that a star people once thought was dying has now come back to the Milky Way again? Who would have thought that a once forgotten star has now become one of the brightest in the region and can now contend with the best of the best in the whole nation? It was once a wish, but now it’s coming to reality.

Their successful stint at the nationals had opened more doors for this new-look NwSSU Singers. Surely, this became their training ground towards becoming a better choir. Blessing comes when you least expect it. Months after, the choir was sent to Manila to participate in the 2nd Kanta: Choral Festival. The group went there without expectations. And they did not go home empty-handed. Such exposure to a national song competition seemed more than enough. They had defied the odds, exceeded their critics’ expectations, and made both the Northwest Samar State University and the region proud.

inent. It will try to sustain its brightness as it has just been selected to compete again, one-note higher this time. It will not just shine within the bounds of the nation but will raise the flag of the Philippines on an international stage in one of the annual international choir competitions in North Sumatra, Indonesia.

The road there will not be an easy one. That’s why the whole team is making sure that they will not let this opportunity slip away. At the start of their preparation, the team with the help of other sectors, organized a three-night Lent en Concert, a concert with beneficial purpose of showcasing the talents of NwSSU Singers to the locals, helping the three different parishes of the Diocese of Calbayog, and gathering enough proceeds for their upcoming international stint. Money is not the only problem here. Mr. Robles and the rest of the team will undergo more rigid rehearsals, workshops, and vocal clinics to make the whole country proud.

Of coure, the success of this organization would not have been possible without the extend ed efforts of highly dedicated and passionate in dividuals in the University. The perfect team up of Engr. Peter Anthony C. Petilla, Head of Arts, Social and Cultural Affairs (ASCA); Mr. Jonathan C. Robles, the maestro; and Mr. Wilfredo A. Au rea, Director for Student Affairs and Services, was fundamental in placing this guild at the pedestal. It is also evident how the administration through the dynamic leadership of Dr. Benjamin L. Pecayo, is bestowing all-out support to the organization’s endeavors. More importantly, what makes this organization flourish is the burning passion that

members exude. They are shining because it is innate in them, and everything just comes natu rally. They have proven us that everything can be possible with unity, hard work, and faith.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “To be a star, you must shine your light, follow your path, and don’t worry about the darkness, for that is when the stars shine brightest. We should not let the darkness be the reason to give up on our dreams because it can also be a way for us to find our path and shine. To see a real star, it would take light-years. You should hold on tight because the road there will not be an easy one. When you envision something, don’t just dream about it; do something to reach it. We are all stars that are waiting to be born. NwSSU Singers is now illuminating because it has overcome darkness and found its light. It is now in the limelight for every one to see and look up to. It will continue to shine and strive more, for the group members believe that with their light they could inspire others and illuminate the darkness of others, too.

Now, go out, look up at the sky and stare at the stars with wonder and hope. Then make a wish – for nothing is impossible.

Language is truly dynamic. Over the years, it continues to grow and make a room for an ongoing discovery. It is highly flexible to accommodate new words emerging from the “third gender” community. Amidst diversity, language always carries with it its vital purpose - expression of strong feelings and emotions.

In the very beginning, there are two categories when it comes to the language account: masculinity for the understanding of all men and feminity as a common denominator of women empowerment. These were once the basis of one’s communicative competence everywhere. But the world

is accomodating enough to provide a linguistic space to the third sex com munity.

LGBTQIA+ community, which refers to those who belong to the third sex class, powers an engine of creativ ity not only in the way these individuals perceive social status and undertak ings but mostly in the words that best represent themselves, the language that would highlight their worth of living in this world. The terms they coined are what have been dubbed as the “gay lingos.”

A product of imaginative and creative minds, these words are used not only by gays or other members of their community but also by the public. We often hear them in places where we would usually find gays and people who love their company - in beauty salons, bars, parks and the likes.

Through the rainbow lane, these individuals use a language of their own that only they could instantly understand. Their vocabulary and the

lives that they live are as colorful as the rainbow that represents their unique community, which people are starting to accept.

No one could ever determine where their language originated, but if you’ll come take a ride with them, you’ll surely figure out how they use these expressions and what they actually mean.

The expression isn’t bad after all. It’s always about how the people will perceive the thought.

The long bus ride is over and may it fill vivid colors to enlighten your life. A step back down along the lane took a sight of perfection, and it goes to show that acceptance is already an existing matter wherever and whoever you are as a person. It is time to go back to our usual world and take every thing we got from the third sex division.

I’m not referring to the notebook you are using to write your thoughts today, but there’s somehow a part of it being used differently in ‘gay lingo’ terms. Taking this case, go take good care of your notebook for it is your foundation of love. Have it covered to live your life longer and go beyond.

There isn’t really a dead end for the Rainbow Express lane, for as long as there is a sense of respect and love as a fuel to the destination of the Rainbow World. We are Born to Shine, We are Stars in Our Own Time: A Movie Review
19 FEATURE

Year 2018 has been a surprise for everyone when Lady Gaga first starred in the movie “A Star is Born” with Bradley Cooper who is also the direc tor of the movie. He had a debut of this third movie remake which became a box office hit and received one Oscar award. It also had 66 wins and 225 nominations from other award-giving bodies. The awards were undoubtedly deserved by this movie as I have watched it multiple times, for I was curious why this movie from 1937 had a third remake.

When I was watching this movie suggested by my adviser and co-writers, I did not have any idea it was a third remake. I even thought it was the true to life story of Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, more popularly known as Lady Gaga because it matches with the account of her life. For instance, when Ally (Lady Gaga) learned to play the piano at a very young age. In real life Lady Gaga started playing the piano at four years old. Also, as for her hit album “Joanne,” she confessed that it tells about the influences of the men in her life. She said, in particular, that she likes men that are ‘cowboys.’ Perhaps this explains for the unforced chemistry between Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper as Jack (Bradley Cooper), the male lead has a vibe of a cowboy country artist.

In the movie, Jack met Ally (Lady Gaga), an aspiring singer in a night club where she was performing. When their eyes met, it was as if their souls were interlocked. Jack knows she has the voice everyone craves to hear, the eyes and nose he cannot resist staring of. He invited Ally to his concerts and introduced her to the world. However, their story wasn`t that easy. Just when she started making a name in the music industry, their blossoming relationship also began falling apart. Jack has an addiction to drugs, and this made him quite lose his mind that often brought misunder standings between them. It was an addic tion, uncontrollable, brought about by his dark past with his family. Once, in awards night Jack has messed it up because of his drug intake. He was publicly humiliated by his own action, but Ally was there to take care and accept him for who he was. She supported him in going to rehabilitation. She tried to help him recover his fame as she wished to have toured with him. It

was a rough time for the couple, but she didn`t give up. She managed to pursue Jack’s dream for her. But sometimes we can`t win all the fights life has to throw upon us. At a concert, Jack didn`t appear. Later, Ally learned that he was already dead. Every thing came crushing down as she recounted how they started, how he rooted for her, how he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. In this life, some things would just go out of our control suddenly, in cluding the people we love. No matter how eager we are to fight for them, if they already gave up, then we are at the loose end. This is one of the realities of life. Death is inevitable, and so acceptance is the key.

The plot of this movie was quite different from the original and first movie remake as the lead actress in the latter played the role of an aspiring actress, not a singer. The lead star has more pas sion for acting than for singing, and so I thought it was a great jump because the movie has received a number of accolades for music, given its superb soundtracks sang by the lead stars themselves.

As a whole, the movie shows what an artist goes through in life - within his family, doing concerts, falling in love with songs and voices, and finding someone he would spend the rest of his life with.

I highly recommend this movie to be watched by everyone who aspires to go out of his or her comfort zone and be carefree to do what he or she is passionate about. No doubt the director and actor Bradley Cooper has done a great debut with this movie. The movie’s worldwide gross of $434.2 million against a production budget of $36 million is clear evidence of its success.

A star is born in the midst of the dark, but it will always shine, just like how Ally rose to shine from being an aspiring singer to an artist who played and sang music around the world and become a star while going through problems with her personal life. She stood up to play her game, fought with all her might, and accepted the things that are out of her control. Ally represents individuals who know what they are passionate about and capable of do ing. On account of all these, this movie indeed deserved a third remake after four decades. It reminds us that we are born to shine, as we are stars in our own time.

How to Capturemable

Photos Using Mobile Phone

Are you fond of capturing photos? Do you want to take a perfect shot and be an instant photographer without the aid of DSLR or HD camera? Worry no more because your mobile phone will assist you. Here are some of the essential tips on how to capture instagrammable photos using your mobile phones.

1. Use gridlines.

Gridlines help to balance your shot when you are using your mobile phone. When you are about to take photo, they will help you determine the best angle for your subject. This is according to Kolowich (2019) in her blog entitled, Phone Photography 101: How to Take Good Pictures with Your Mobile Device. According to the rule of thirds, a photograph should be broken down into thirds, both horizon tally and vertically. If you will place your subject along the lines, the photo will be balanced and pleasing to the eye. Of course, always remember that when you are applying the rule of thirds, make sure that the other side of the photo or the background of the subject has something to do with the subject so that the photo will be more meaningful.

To the beginners, using gridlines will be your stepping stone to enhance your photography. It will serve as your guide to taking the best photo.

2. Get closer, don’t zoom.

When you use your mobile phone in capturing photos, never use your phone camera’s zoom because it will lose a lot of fine details in the photo. Instead, move closer to your subject until you find the perfect angle for your subject.

Always remember that quality matters when it comes to photography.

3. Minimize the use of filters.

When you are still taking photos, don’t use filters. A filter is a device that may enhance your photo, but it seems too much especially if you are not a pro in using it. Raw photos are always better than edited ones. However, if you really want to, you can use filters after taking photos. Mobile apps like SnapSeed, Pho toshop Express, and Adobe Lightroom are the most recommended editing appli cations for your photos. But still, be careful in using these editing applications. You would need to practice more on how to find the best filter.

4. Set your phone camera’s focus.

Today’s phones cameras have auto focus, which is one of the features in DSLR and HD cam. To adjust the area you want to sharpen and be emphasized, just tap the view on the screen that you want to sharpen before capturing. This will help the viewers determine what you are trying to emphasize on your photo.

5. Make use of the negative space.

“Negative space” refers to the areas around the subject. Maximizing the usage of this space can enhance your photo. When you include a lot of space, it will make your subject stand out and evoke a strong impact to the viewers. Blog gers usually use this kind of taking shots. This technique may be simple, but it can refine your photo.

Some examples of negative spaces are sky, empty field, water, and large walls.

6. Take photos with weird angles.

If you want something new, try to find and discover weird angles. This is all about being creative and seeing a different perspective. Make use of the things that you can see around you. You can even use them as a frame of your subject. For sure, your shot will capture your viewers’ attention.

7. Don’t use the flash.

If you want to take a good photo, forget your flash. It will not help your photo to be more attractive. If your concern is the darkness, find another source of light. Aside from sunlight, there are a lot of alternative sources of light that may improve the brightness of your image.

If you want to improve your photography skills and want to capture more ins tagrammable photos, try to search samples from the internet. There are lots of trendy shots that are posted on social media sites. There you can get several ideas on how to capture the best ones.

It’s not all the time that we need to have with us DSLRs, HD cameras, or any other sophisticated photo devices to be able to discover our potential in photography. In today’s time, our mobile phones already have built-in cameras that could help us explore, practice photography, and produce worth-posting photos in Instagram or any social media sites. All it takes is knowing these basics.

“Nag-aabang sa langit. Sa mga ulap sumisilip. Sa likod ng mga tala. Kahit sulyap lang Darna...”

Hindi, hindi mo siya lubos na kilala. Siya ba si Vilma Santos? Lorna Tolentino? Sharon Cuneta? An janette Abayari? Angel Locsin? Marian Rivera?

It’s official!

After 14 years of waiting, the biennial regional multi-sport event Southeast Asian Games will be back in the Philippines after the SEA Games Federation (SEAGF) has officially awarded to our country the hosting rights for the 30th South East Asian Games in 2019. This good news became official during the handover ceremony for the next host nation last SEA Games 2017 held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The symbolic SEAGF Coun cil flag was handed over by the out going Malaysian Olympic Committee president HRH Tunku Tan Sri Imran to then-Philippine Olympic Commit tee (POC) president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco, who in turn passed to then-Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan

Peter Cayetano, who will spearhead the country’s hosting as the chair man of organizing committee for 2019 games.

Bringing this regional sport ing event back to the Philippines after 14 years since 2005, has not been an easy process as the country went through some obstacles just to make this happen.

Originally, the hosting privilege was given to Brunei Darussalam, but the country pulled out days before the bidding due to “fi nancial and logistical reasons”. The Philippines did not let this opportu nity slip away as it showed interest in hosting the games for 2019, but it did not end there. The Philippine became uncertain following the withdrawal of government support

last July 2017 as it planned to use the funds intended for the games on the rehabilitation of Marawi after the attacks of ISIS supporters. Eventually, the country reversed its withdrawal and decided to push through its hosting until it’s finally official.

Hosting this sporting event may put some extra weight on the country’s shoulder because of the different national conundrums that it is currently experiencing, but the government believes that the country will be the main beneficiary for hosting the SEA games. Not only will this improve our sports system but it will also be an avenue to showcase the country’s beauty, attracting other nationals to come visit the Philip pines and take this as an advantage for tourism that plays an important role in our economy.

3 We Win as One! SEA GAMES:

The Philippines is not a stranger in hosting SEA Games. It hosted the event thrice - in 1981, 1991, and 2005. The Philippine Olympic Committee had promised the SEAGF to make the 2019 edition the “best SEA Games ever” because unlike the 2005 Games, the 2019 SEA Games will adopt a different or ganizing structure for the Philippine SEA Games Organizing Committee (PhilSOC). Also the 2019 event will be notable for being the first to include e-sports and obstacle course, as well as having the highest num ber of sports in its history with 550 events in 57 games.

To be the host entails com mitment. The country, after more than a year of announcing its hosting, is now in the process of intense

preparation with less than a year left. There is still a lot of things to work on, but the Philippine Olympic Com mittee (POC) assured everybody that it’s on the right track of finalizing preparations before we welcome the expected 9,840 participating athletes from ten South East Asian Nations in our country on November 30 until December 11.

Talking about the venues, the Philippines has some facilities and sporting venues that can be used for some games like basket ball, volleyball, and soccer, but these are still not enough to accommodate other games like track and field and water events considering our lack of some first-class sports facilities. With the country staying true to its words, our hosting will showcase “Build, build, build” infrastructure developments. Under this partner ship, a more than 50-hectare Sports City, with world-class facilities like the Athletic Stadium inspired from Mount Pinatubo with maximum seating capacity of 20,000; the Aquatic Stadium with 2,000 seating capacity; and the Athletes’ Village to accom modate the athletes, are now trying to reach their completion dates. The main hub will be in Clark (Northern Philippines); the secondary hub will be in Subic Bay Free Point Zone; and the tertiary hub will be in Metro Manila and nearby cities. The games will open at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan with seating capacity of 55,000 while the closing ceremony will take place at the Athletics Stadi

um at the New Clark.

Meanwhile, after months of planning, the POC has finally decid ed on the official logo for the 2019 SEA Games. The logo depicts 11 rings from the logo of the Southeast Asian Games Federation; these rings are of four colors: red, blue, yellow, and green and form the shape of the Philippines. The mas cot on the other hand, was named “Pami,” which represents every nation, sport and person coming together and supporting each other at the games. The name comes from the Tagalog word ‘pamilya’, meaning family.

There is no other sporting event more important to us in South east Asia than the SEA Games. Every two years, countries in the region come together as one be cause we share the same belief that this occurrence is an integral part of this region’s development – political, economic and social. It’s the time of the year again where we will witness our athletes battle it all out with the best of the best in the region. This is the time when we will set aside our daily grinds and national problems and continue the dream of ASEAN in rising together as one region.

With only few months left before the games, the Philippines with the help of other Southeast Asian nations, is on its feet anticipat ing for this year’s hosting to become a successful one. Now, Southeast Asia, are you ready?

Things You Can Do to Save the OCEAN

Mind Your Carbon Footprint and Reduce Energy Consumption

Reduce the effects of climate change on the ocean. Leave the car at home when you can and be conscious of your energy use at home and work. A few things you can do to get started today: Switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs, take the stairs, and bundle up or use a fan to avoid oversetting your thermostat.

Use Fewer Plastic Products

Plastics that end up as ocean debris contribute to habitat destruction and kill thousands of marine animals. To limit your plastic waste, carry a reusable water bottle, store food in nondisposable containers, bring your own cloth tote or other reusable bag when shopping, and recycle whenever possible.

Make Safe, Sustainable Seafood Choices

Global fish population is depleted due to demand, loss of habitat, and unsustainable fishing practices. When shopping or dining out, help reduce the demand for overexploited species by choosing seafood that is both healthful and sustainable.

Help Take Care of the Beach

Whether you enjoy diving, surfing, or relaxing on the beach, always clean up after yourself. Explore and appreciate the ocean without interfering with wildlife or removing rocks and corals. Go further by encouraging others to respect the ma rine environment or by participating in local beach cleanups.

Support Organizations Working to Protect the Ocean

Many institutes and organizations are fighting to protect ocean habitats and marine wildlife. Find a national organization and consider giving financial support or volunteering for hands-on work or advocacy. If you live near the coast, join up with a local branch or group and get involved in projects close to home.

Influence Change in Your Community

Research the ocean policies of public officials before you vote or contact your local representatives to let them know you support marine conservation projects. Consider patronizing restaurants and grocery stores that offer only sustainable seafood, and speak up about your concerns if you spot a threatened species on the menu or at the seafood counter.

Travel the Ocean Responsibly

Practice responsible boating, kayaking, and other recreational activities on the ocean. Never throw anything overboard, and be aware of marine life in the water. If you're set on taking a cruise for your next vacation, do some research to find the most eco-friendly option.

Educate Yourself About Oceans and Marine Life

All lives on Earth are connected to the ocean and its inhab itants. The more you learn about the issues facing this vital system, the more you'll want to help ensure its health. Share that knowledge to educate and inspire others.
