Fresh The Faces Power of Music

Avary Senft Freshman Avary Senft has had a positive outlook on her first month of high school. Senft is involved in dance, and practices at Next Step Dance Centre. As of right now, Senft’s favorite class for the first trimester is biology with Mrs.Drumm, because there is never a dull moment within the subject. After high school, Senft plans on going to college and focusing her studies in the medical field, specifically, dealing with newborns, also known as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. Senft’s friends would describe her as energetic, helping, and an overall kind person. The two biggest motivators in Senft’s life are her mother and father because of the constant love and support they shower her with.

Music has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. The sounds of every genre shaped my childhood, and my family made sure to expose me to every type possible. This being said, I pride myself in having a vast taste in music. Today, I’ll be focusing on the psychedelic rock musician called Tame Impala from Australia. Popping up in 2007, the musician is actually a single singer named Kevin Parker. I personally discovered this music about a year and a half ago, and I was immediately in love with it. The unique way the artist mixes genres gives his music a modern sound with nostalgic styles, taking influence from the hippie era of music. Tame Impala has a very specific demographic, and they satisfy their audience effortlessly. In person, the artist mixes visual effects (lights, fog, and colorful media on screens) as well as intense, drawn out periods of music without lyrics, only supported by visual effects and instruments. Even without lyrics, I find myself appreciating the one-of-a-kind sounds more than any other music I have experienced. I got to see Tame Impala in August of 2019 a music festival in Chicago called Lollapalooza. To say it was magical would be an understatement. I was lucky enough to be right on the barrier, and the vibe of the audience with the intricate light show and insanely loud music made my experience an unforgettable one. Pre-Season Sports Camps Prove To Be Beneficial Northwests’ Football Team Travels to GVSU to Establish Team Chemistry Anthony Cole
Senior
There are many fall sports teams that host a preseason camp and there are many of those who do not. These camps are opportunities for the team members along with the coaches to bond with each other. It also allows the team to get a few extra practices in before the actual season has even begun. “The unity that comes out of team camp is hard to quantify and create in a typical setting,” said Varsity Football Coach John Rea. A team camp is normally designated at a certain college, for example a team may stay at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) or Central Michigan University (CMU). The players will

typically stay in dorms and be fed on campus. These camps usually last anywhere between three to seven days. The Varsity football team typically goes to Grand Valley State University. “The facilities are top notch,” said Rea. “It is far away enough away that we can having better bonding with players.” The more important aspect of these trips is forming team chemistry. Sports are very competitive and team camps remind players to have fun while playing. It is not all fun and games however, coaches will often times put their players through numerous practices per day. Struggling for an extended period of time is what can bring a team together as one. Team camps typically take place when the weather is nice and warm, which adds on to the already large workload. This idea of physical exhaustion can be looked upon as a potential downside. “The potential downsides are as simple as athletes making choices that may not be helpful to the career while away from their parents,” said Rea. All in all, the goal of hosting a team camp is to gain a competitive edge over other teams. As previously mentioned they create everlasting bonds all while allowing the team to get extra practices in. Every team should try and participate in a team camp as the benefits are endless.

Sisters to Play College Basketball Together
Jozie Bontrager commits to follow in footsteps of older sister Ella at LSSU Henly Sleight
Junior
On November 8th 2017, Ella Bontrager signed the contract to play basketball for Lake Superior State University on a full ride scholarship. Two years later, now a college sophomore, she awaits her younger sister, Jozie Bontrager, to join her in playing basketball at LSSU, also on a full ride. Jozie committed to become a Laker on December 16th, 2018 and is anxious for signing day to arrive so she can be with her sister once again. The Bontrager sisters grew up in an athletic household, competing in multiple sports such as soccer, volleyball and track. But, after years of playing competitive sports, the two both decided that basketball was their favorite and the sport they both wanted to pursue. “I chose LSSU because it feels like the right fit for me, athletically and academically,” said Jozie Bontrager. “My sister being there is just a huge bonus” The Bontragers played AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) basketball together for years, despite the two year age difference. They played for numerous club teams and got to watch each other's skills advance as they became college worthy athletes. They also were able to enjoy playing two years of varsity basketball together and took the Mounties to their first ever state championship in March of 2018. The sisters were Northwest High Schools’ starting point guard and post for two years and lead the team to the most successful basketball season in Northwest history. That summer, Ella left for the Upper Peninsula. “When I first visited LSSU, I could tell right away that it was the right fit,” said Ella Bontrager. “Then when I met the team I definitely knew this was where I wanted to be. Ella immediately fell in love with the laker culture and knew right away this was her future home. However, Ella learned that life without Jozie by her side was a lot tougher than she imagined. So when the news broke out that Jozie received an offer, Ella was ecstatic. “I was really hoping Jozie would accept the offer to come play at Lake State,” said Ella Bontrager. “I loved when we played together for two years in High School, and now we can play together again in college!” Now Jozie, a high school senior, longs for the day when she can rejoin her sister in playing the sport they grew up loving. Finally in the summer of 2020, she will be able to. Image courtesy of Shealyn Paulis
