CINEMAS N-E-X D-O-C-S November 1 – 7
What is the line between the world we see and the world we make? N-E-X D-O-C-S is our annual weeklong festival showcasing non-fiction films that play with form, push aesthetic boundaries and explore subjects and ideas by stretching conventions of narrative structure and style. This year's festival unearths the everyday beauty and challenge of life in rural West Virginia, the creative insights of a famous Portuguese architect, an alternative fairy tale about Baba Yaga, and more.

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
FILMMAKERS WERE AS RIGOROUS AS THEY WERE REBELLIOUS; AND, EVENTUALLY, EACH AIMED Just before the French New Wave emerged, in the late 1950s, another, earlier one broke in Poland, FOR HIS OWN IMAGE OF and it too bristled with a half dozen talented filmmakers who set to work to make a new kind of LIBERATION AND THE NEW.
cinema. Emerging from the national film school in Łódz´ the filmmakers were as rigorous as they were rebellious; and while Truffaut, Godard, Rohmer and Chabrol stirred their love of American films into grittier and more playful versions of the same stories, in Poland Andrej Wajda, Krzyzstof Zanussi, Roman Polanski and, eventually, Krzyzstof Kieslowski each aimed for his own image of liberation and the new. It’s a story Northwest Film Forum started to tell this summer and that we will continue this fall. For the Poles, the memory of war, and the victory of World War II, was continuous with the experience of tyranny that came just after it: the German tanks that rolled over Poland’s border to begin the hot war resemble the Soviet tanks that came to start the Cold one. By the accounts of the densely pretty and complicated films that started to pour out a decade long after that, the whole culture was in a conversation about freedom and the power of love to alter the taste of metal that totalitarian rule left. Polanski emerged, perhaps most famously, from this school, and then left for England, France and Hollywood. Those who stayed included the great Andrej Wajda, whose 1981 film, Man of Iron, came a quarter century after he first impressed Godard with Ashes and Diamonds (1958), and is itself rich in images of Poland’s desire to shed their master. Among the other films in this series is Krzystof Zanussi’s densely imagined The Illumination, Wojciech Has’s The Saragossa Manuscript, which impressed Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter as much as Luis Bunuel, and Kieslowski’s early classic, A Short Film About Killing. Martin Scorsese, whose Film Foundation is responsible for the beautiful restorations of these films, has said that these films made a strong impact on him when he was at NYU Film School. “The [Łódz´] School nurtured in me,” Scorsese has said, “an unshakeable belief in the power of artistic expression.” Come and see for yourselves. AONO JIKKEN ENSEMBLE:
JAPANESE GIRLS AT THE HARBOR
Co-presented with SAM’s Gardner Center for Asian Art & Ideas 1933, 71 min
After spending the last few years touring internationally with Guy Maddin and his films, experimental music collective Aono Jikken Ensemble returns home to Seattle for this performance, a live score for Japanese Girls at the Harbor, a lyrical silent drama from 1933 by rediscovered master director Hiroshi Shimizu. This stunning event features the premiere of a new live music and sound score, with benshi narration in Japanese and English. Aono Jikken Ensemble’s music combines traditional Asian, western, and world instruments, found objects, sound toys, and specially created sound devices made of metal, bamboo, kelp and other materials.
Inspired by New York filmmakers Jim Jarmusch, John Cassavetes and Spike Lee, and by their own experiences of the city, French filmmakers Ruben Amar and Lola Bessis have crafted a delightfully engrossing domestic drama for their feature debut: the story of three young people pursuing personal and artistic fulfilment in the city that never sleeps.
