PROGRAM NOTES
THE BARBER OF SEVILLE (Overture) • Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) Arr. Richard Meyer
First performed in Rome in 1816, this overture to the opera The Barber of Seville is among Gioacchino Rossini's most-loved orchestral works The recognizable and infectious main theme has been frequently used in commercials and even Bugs Bunny cartoons! This arrangement highlights the individual colors of the woodwind, brass and string sections, and remains close to the original. Italian composer Gioacchino Rossini was born into a musical family, and primarily gained fame for his 39 operas, although he also wrote other works He set new standards for both comic and serious opera before retiring from large-scale composition while still in his thirties, at the height of his popularity.
BLUE TANGO • Leroy Anderson (1872-1958) Arr. Chris Bernotas
American composer Leroy Anderson received a gold record in 1952 for Blue Tango, the first instrumental recording to sell over one million copies Composed for orchestra in 1951, Blue Tango became a surprise hit of the juke boxes and radios of the day Anderson was stationed in the Army at the time at Fort Bragg and got a telegram from Decca Records saying that it would probably reach the top. He recalled: “the whole thing was completely unbelievable to me because the kind of music I write was not popular music, it was concert music, rather than a pop song ” Musician, composer, conductor, Army veteran, Leroy Anderson wrote some of the most enduring and beloved “orchestra pops” tunes of the 20th century, including Sleigh Ride
SCHERZO COLOMBINE • Cécile Chaminade (1857-1944 ) Orch. Phillip Clark
This whimsical scherzo, reminiscent of a danse macabre, was written for piano solo. (A “Scherzo Columbine” listed in Chaminade's Orchestral Suite may have been the original version of this piece, but that music is unfortunately lost.) This new orchestration by Phillip Clark brings out the depth and harmonic richness of the original through the skillful weaving of contrasting textures and graceful melodic lines throughout the orchestra French composer and pianist Cécile Chaminade began piano studies with her mother, and showed early promise as a composer. Though forbidden by her family to attend the Paris Conservatory, she was allowed to take composition lessons, and in 1913 she became the first female composer to be granted admission to the Order of the Legion of Honour Chaminade was especially known for her piano music, which she performed on numerous concert tours; and she became incredibly popular in the US during the early 1900s Other than her flute concertino, many of her compositions faded from public memory after her death; many are being rediscovered and enjoyed again.
A PIRATE’S LEGEND • Soon Hee Newbold (b 1974) Orch. Carl Rydlund
A Pirate‘s Legend tells a musical story, with sections entitled: Calm Before the Storm; The Jolly Roger; The Storm; Deserted Island and Treasure. The composer notes, “ Pirates, buccaneers, and privateers have a rich history that has produced myths, legends, and romanticized stories. A good pirate story is not complete without buried treasure, the dreaded Jolly Roger, and adventure on the high seas; however, the life of a real pirate was not so glamorous Whether they were hired mercenaries, rebels, or thieves, pirates lived through rough conditions and stormy weather Their ‘prized treasure’ usually consisted of simple items like grain or other material possessions. Many famous pirates met untimely and violent deaths, but their legends still live on.” Musicians use a wide variety of special effects including harmonics and col legno. Composer Soon Hee Newbold lives in California, where she works in film, television, and commercial projects as a producer, actress, composer, and musician Newbold is also a proficient martial artist, with multiple black belts in Tae Kwon Do, Hapkido, and Kigumdo
RIT LAVI A (THE RHYTHM OF LIFE) • Christopher Ducasse (b 1993)
“Rit lavi a" is a phrase in Haitian Creole, which can be translated to "The Rhythm of Life." The composer says it “delves into our journey on Earth: the highs and lows, joy and sorrow, swiftness and slowness, and the coexistence of good and bad two facets of the same existence The harmonious fusion of these opposing elements constitutes the essence of life, a flawlessly imperfect beauty. Our task of navigating this expedition while radiating positivity encapsulates the very heart of life, its rhythm.” The work was commissioned for strings, winds and percussion “by Kevin and April Ann Sütterlin as a gift to the Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra, in honor of our friend and Army veteran Ronald "Ron" Nowacki who passed away on August 2, 2023 ” This is the premiere of the piece’s new scoring for full orchestra. Rit Lavi A draws inspiration from two Haitian folk rhythms named "Ibo and Yanvalou ” They are both styles of drumming and dance in Haitian culture They have a rich and significant history and reflect the cultural diversity and influences that have shaped Haitian music and dance over the centuries Composer Christopher Ducasse is a native of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, where he began violin, piano and voice studies; he continued his musical and composition training in the United States and Canada His music fuses Haitian folk music with classical composition traditions

ROCK HOPPING • Maria Grenfell (b 1969)
Rock Hopping (2012) was commissioned for the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra by the Hush Foundation, as part of a project to create music that could comfort children in the hospital. Composer Maria Grenfell says, “ I loved creating a soothing sound world and I hope it helps inspire a feeling of calm. Rock Hopping is for children, and one of the things my own children love to do is go rock hopping at the beach. It takes them to their own special world of castles and crabs, waves and water.“ Muted trumpet, harp, oboe and percussion colors help paint the musical picture
Maria Grenfell’s work takes much of its influence from poetic, literary and visual sources, and from non-Western music and literature. Born in Malaysia and educated in Australia, New Zealand and later at the Eastman School and the United States, Maria is presently an Associate Professor at the University of Tasmania Conservatorium of Music Her orchestral music has been commissioned, performed or recorded by all the major symphony orchestras in Australia and New Zealand
BALLADE IN A MINOR • Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912)
At the age of 23, a year after graduating from the Royal College of Music, British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor wrote the Ballade in A Minor for a commission from the Three Choirs Festival in Gloucester in 1898 Initially it was offered to Sir Edward Elgar, who declined, writing: "I have received a request from the secretary to write a short orchestra thing for the evening concert. I am sorry, I am too busy to do so [he was about to compose the Enigma Variations]. I wish, wish, wish you would ask Coleridge-Taylor to do it. He is far and away the cleverest fellow going amongst the young men." The resulting work, Ballade in A minor, helped establish the young composer's career The Ballade alternates between a splashy, fiery, dramatic theme and a gentler, passionate “love song,” with various parts of the orchestra taking the melodic and harmonic leads. With the Ballade, Coleridge-Taylor developed his own compositional voice while still retaining elements of his musical heroes such as Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and Dvorák
Samuel Coleridge-Taylor rose from difficult beginnings to become one of the best-known British composers, and the first to win acclaim in the United States. He was admired by Elgar, compared to Mahler, and celebrated in life he toured the United States, and even played before President Theodore Roosevelt at the White House. Tragically, Coleridge-Taylor was only 37 when he died in 1912 of pneumonia, brought on by overwork He had already composed nearly 100 works And even though his composition “Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast’ sold hundreds of thousands of copies, he did not receive any compensation, aside from the initial amount of 15 guineas. His death in poverty caused musicians to create the Performing Rights Society in England.
