OVERTURETO“DIEFLEDERMAUS”(”TheBat”)•JohannStraussII(1825-1899)

The overture to Johann Strauss II's popular operetta, Die Fledermaus (The Bat) is an orchestral introduction for the theater audience The plot to this comic operetta revolves around a practical joke, a masked ball, and a plan for revenge, and is filled with mistaken identities, flirtations, and laughter. The overture is full of bright, catchy, and joyful melodies, a musical preview of the operetta's lighthearted and entertaining story. It introduces famous melodies that will be heard throughout the performance of the opera, like waltzes and polkas, and includes parts of the arias the vocalists will sing Composer Johann Strauss II was known as “The Waltz King” and is remembered for his skill at creating memorable and exciting tunes October 25, 2025 marked the 200 anniversary of his birth, and Philharmonic musicians celebrated at rehearsal! th
IRISHSUITE,part2 •Traditional,Arr.LeroyAnderson (1908-1975)adaptedDouglasWagner
American composer Leroy Anderson was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts to first-generation Swedish immigrant parents. Leroy was given piano lessons by his mother, then entered the New England Conservatory at age 11 and later earned a BA and MA in music from Harvard University Unsure that a career in music would be possible, Anderson considered becoming a language teacher, and began working on a PhD in German and Scandinavian languages This would later come in handy while he served in the U S Army Anderson was commissioned to create an orchestral suite of traditional Irish folk music to be performed by the Boston Pops Orchestra; he completed four movements in just 11 days, and it was premiered on June 6, 1947. He then completed two additional movements in 1949, renamed it “Irish Suite” and reorganized the movements. Douglas Wagner’s adaptation includes the last three pieces (part 2) of the 6-movement suite. “The Wearing of the Green" is a pizzicato ostinato: the strings do not use their bows at all The tune, treated as a scherzo, alternates between strings, woodwind, and brass "The Last Rose of Summer" features lovely slow melodies, solo lines and a nostalgic feel The tune is well known as a vocal solo "The Girl I Left Behind Me" has a contrapuntal effect near the end, where some of the orchestra plays the first part of the tune against the second part, twice as slowly, played by others.
SONGWITHOUTWORDS•GustavHolst(1874-1934)arr.RoyPhillippe
Gustav Holst was an English musician, composer, trombonist, band teacher, and orchestra teacher He wrote many works for string orchestra, band, choir, and symphony; and is perhaps best known for his Symphonic Suite The Planets. Song Without Words is the second movement of his Second Suite in F for Military Band, and is based on the Cornish folk song "I'll Love My Love". The original song is about a woman who ends up in Bedlam, the historically most-feared insane asylum, because her love's parents sent him off to sea to separate the two of them (He does come back to find her, and they eventually live happily ever after ) Holst uses F Dorian Mode to create a sad and nostalgic feeling, and passes the melody around It leads to a dramatic fermata (hold) and then resolves Holst also set a choral version of this song

OCEANA •StellaSung (b1969) withfilmbyAnnieCrawley
From composer Stella Sung: “In the spring of 2016, Maestro Christopher Wilkins (Music Director, Akron Symphony & Boston Landmarks Orchestra) and I attended a lecture at the New England Aquarium given by marine biologists Scott Kraus (Senior Science Advisor, NEAq) and Christopher Clark (Cornell University) in which we learned about the problems of ocean noise pollution caused by seismic testing, the air guns used for this process, large ships and ocean vessels, and other man-made noises. The effects of these noises can be devastating for all marine species from fish to plankton, but particularly for those that depend upon sound waves for their communication, finding food sources, and navigation This is what is referred to as "ocean noise pollution " With this knowledge in mind, I decided that my new composition, Oceana, would have a focal point of reminding us of how important the ecosystems of the oceans are for not only marine life but for human life as well I have compiled a soundtrack comprised of recordings of marine life animal sounds (various wh throughout the piece. The work is divided into three basic sections:
1) the beauty, majesty, and mystery of the seas and the life forms that live there
2) the man-made disturbances of that ecosystem, and 3) the hope that humans can find a balance of living alongside the oceans and marine life so that our co-existence is based upon respect, understanding, and knowledge. “

“Working with internationally recognized marine underwater film-maker/ photographer/scuba diver and educator Annie Crawley, we have formed a collaborative effort to document not only the wonders of the ocean, but man-made pollution and harmful elements - including noise pollution. With Annie's extraordinary film which she personally shot and edited, we are bringing not only the musical composition to life, but bridging a deeper understanding and appreciation for the wonders of the ocean ”

Composer Bao Yuankai is one of the most eminent contemporary Chinese composers and music educators, whose body of works is as varied as it is large Beginning in 1980, Bao embarked on his own journey to collect and transcribe melodies from the deep reservoir of Chinese folk music In 1991, he composed Chinese Sights and Sounds, a suite of 24 folk tunes arranged for an orchestra comprised solely of Western instruments. Through the innovative use of vibrato, glissandos (slides from one note to another), pizzicato (both plucking and strumming the strings), and use of the pentatonic (5 note) scale, Bao’s music emulates both the vocal style of Chinese folk music and opera as well as traditional Chinese instruments Sights and Sounds is made up of six suites, each devoted to the folk music of a particular province Four movements will be performed today:
A gentle flourish of flute, harp, and percussion introduces the lovely melody of Beautiful Scenery of Wuxi, which alternates between the strings and woodwinds, with numerous additional solos, including English horn and violin The folk song describes the beauties of Wuxi City, and is characteristic of popular music, since ancient times, of Jiangsu Provinces The scenery is a source of inspiration for poets, painters and musicians It is set in the old teahouse in Wuxi city; while enjoying lakeside scenery, guests are listening to the singer playing Erhu and singing local music.
From the Suite #3 comes the ballad of Lan Huahua This song from the north of Shaanxi Province is about a brave girl called Lan Huahua who protested against feudalism and arranged marriages and pursued her own happiness Her struggle ends in tragedy and finally costs her life, as portrayed by the different instruments in the orchestra. Toward the end, listen for the theme in the timpani leading to the tragic ending of the story.
Happiness at Sunrise is a lively and straightforward folk song from Sichuan Province, depicting the happiness and pride of children when they climb up the hills to work The melody is played by the full orchestra with highlights of brass, strings and timpani
Dialogue on Flowers features two contrasting melodies, one briskly rhythmic with skittering strings and brash oboe solos, the other led by a lyrical solo flute. The piece freely translates to “Can You Guess What Flower It Is?” and is in a question and answer format The entire song is filled with various sound effects and rhythm, depicting the various flowers The song embodies a bright and lively image through the dotted rhythms and syncopations, and the singer’s imitation of a drumbeat sound. A slow song, Kite Flying, is inserted during the middle section, evoking a sunny day in March and girls having fun flying kites.
