Chris Goldman Welcome to Explore NW! We appreciate the time you’ve invested to discover more about Northwest Church’s mission, vision, and structure. In 2016, NWChurch made a historic and bold move. We were tucked away in a Shoreline neighborhood. God blessed us with an opportunity to relocate into the heart of the marketplace. Our model for ministry is this: We built a community center where a church happens to meet. We gave the facility its own name, “The Community Life Center of Lynnwood,” and began inviting the community in. This has strategically put us in conversations with numerous individuals, groups, and organizations we otherwise wouldn’t know. Today you’ll find out more about the heart of this “mission outpost” and what drives us as disciples of Jesus Christ.

The Mission of the Northwest Church is to... Join God’s Spirit in spreading His kingdom, calling all people to follow Jesus, transforming LIFE and COMMUNITY through His love. In 2016, we strategically relocated to the heart of the marketplace in Lynnwood, WA and, “… built a community center where a church happens to meet.” We named this facility, “The COMMUNITY LIFE Center” of Lynnwood. Our goal is to partner with great people and great organizations who help transform lives and community through sharing the love of God with people and helping families in the area.

Our goal is to help you experience God and impact your world. Isn’t that what “church” should be about? When followers of Jesus truly experience God and impact their world, we all witness the transformation of lives and community. Unfortunately for many, church has become a Sunday morning event where the goal is to have rooms full of people rather than hearts full of God. At NWChurch, we want to help people experience God and impact their world. Our primary partner is Lahai Health. An organization devoted to proving hope and health for the underserved, they were allotted 3,300 square feet to build a permanent state-of-the-art Dental Clinic and office complex. In addition, they began offering medical clinics every Tuesday and on two Thursdays a month (via their mobile clinic and space in the building). Lahai is one example of the types of partnerships we seek to develop. We are surrounded by great people doing great things for God’s Kingdom and for our local community. We can help by making sure great people and organizations have affordable access to space. The Community Life Center is also host to Business Network International (BNI), the Lynnwood Police Department (for training indoors and out), many YoungLife activities and meetings, the Parrish Nurse Organization, Marketplace Connections, and on and on and on the list goes. We want to help you experience God and impact your world, AND … we want you to help others experience God and impact their world, too.

WHAT WE BELIEVE Churches are often asked, “What do you believe and teach?” While it’s tempting to simply say, “the Bible,” we know people want to clarify any nitch or nuanced teaching that is identifiable. Most people notice our weekly sharing of communion and our practice of baptism. However, these important practices flow out of a greater belief structure and understanding. We want to share with you our core beliefs and teachings through a simple diagram we have titled, “Christ-Centric Conversations.” The entire Bible pivots around JESUS CHRIST. Jesus is the “center” of all Biblical theology. This diagram is part of a greater (advanced training) study we refer to as “Reach.” THREE CORE BELIEFS ... all centering around Jesus. Everything we believe centers around Jesus. We believe that the Triune God (Father, Spirit and Son): 1.

Created everything, including us to be human, relational, creative, and free.

2. Tried to reveal clarity and understanding when things got distorted and misrepresented. 3. Worked out a way for us to find our way back to Him and be in life-giving community. MINISTRIES, TEAMS, NETWORKS & PATHWAYS Everything that happens at NWChurch fits into either a ministry, a special team, a network or a pathway. First Impressions Ministry Greeting our guests is so important to us that we have a dedicated ministry just for this. Serving great coffee and homemade scones is part of it, but those just set the stage forgetting to know one another. We want guests to feel comfortable and welcome ... wherever they are in life. • Greeters • Chair Set up crew • Sunday morning hosts • Children’s Check-In • Communion Prep Children’s Ministry When Jesus was on Earth, He spoke about how we should have faith like that of a child. We want to help each child in their first steps of faith, learning about how God loves them and how He made them special and unique. We offer loving nursery care for our littlest ones, and interactive, fun and ageappropriate Bible classes for kids up to Grade 6. Student Ministry The student ministry at NWChurch includes a vibrant group of teens who have a ton of fun hanging out and learning together about what God wants for their lives. They meet throughout the school year on a regular basis, and in the summer for special events that help them stay connected with each other. • Junior High School • High School • Sunday Evening Youth Group • Activities • Youth Band

Celebrate Recovery We all have things in our lives that keep us from growing—hurts, habits, and hang-ups. God wants us to live “abundant lives,” but we stumble over past issues or current challenges. Celebrate Recovery is a faith-based ministry that works through “8 Recovery Principles” that help us become changed people. Adult Bible Classes (Compass Ministry) It’s way too easy to simply come to church on Sunday and slip out without really connecting with other people. We offer adult Bible classes during both service hours, which gives you a chance to get to know other people better, ask questions about living a life of faith, and learn more about God. We call it Compass Ministry because learning more about the Bible and about God helps to give you true direction in life. Community Life Group Ministry We are not meant to live life alone. God made us relational just like Him. There are lots of ways we connect with others, whether it’s because we share a similar life stage or we join groups that work or play together. NWChurch has a wide variety of groups to help you feel like you belong. Women’s Ministry A team-led ministry committed to giving the women in our church opportunities for focused relationshipbuilding and to support one another. This is done through fun, creative and Bible-focused events, where women can get to know one another better and invite friends. Men’s Connection Network The mission of the Men’s Network Connection Network is to build Godly relationships between like-minded men as we become Godly men, fathers, and husbands. The intent is to build a network which fosters growth in the home and at church through a variety of experiences.

Health Ministry The Bible tells us that God wants us to live “abundant lives,” and we believe this extends to the whole person—the physical body as well as the spiritual life. We have a dedicated team of nurses and medical professionals who help us by leading exercise or health classes and offering free blood pressure checks to monitor our health. Pastoral Care Ministry We care for people by helping them in times when they are weak, sick, or in distress. The Bible encourages us to celebrate with one another in good times, and to grieve with each other in the tough times. NWChurch takes this seriously and we’re committed to sharing this journey of life. • Pastoral Care Team • Prayer Team Spiritual Formation Ministry God wants us to grow in our relationship with Him. We do that by meeting on a regular basis to worship together on Sunday mornings, which helps us and encourages others. We also set aside times of learning together at special events and off-site retreats. This gets us away from distractions— helping us to focus on Him and His will for our lives. Special Team: Sunday Morning Worship Team The Worship Team supports the Spiritual Formation Ministry and seeks to create an experience of worship, praise, prayer, and artistic expression. This experience centers around the sharing of communion, the teaching from scripture, and the utilization of Christian songs. Missions Ministry What do you do when you have good news? You share it with all your friends and family! We feel that way about the Good News of Jesus Christ—that God made a way for us to be able to come to Him anytime. That news is so good, we are dedicated to sharing it all over the world by supporting missionaries and agencies that do just that.

Discipleship Pathways: ROOTED & Life in Rhythm • ROOTED is a 10-week, small group experience that connects people to God, to one another, and to their purpose. ROOTED isn’t simply a Bible study or a book. It is a community experience, where people practice seven rhythms essential to a healthy relationship with Jesus. Individuals establish firm roots in the truth of God’s Word through personal study and then come together to discuss what they’re learning in a space where they are safe and known. • For those who have been through ROOTED and want to take that growth further, we offer Life In Rhythm, the brand new small group experience from ROOTED Network. This curriculum is designed to empower individuals to establish healthy rhythms of discipleship and live out God’s design in the two spheres in which we spend most of our time—work and family. Community Life Center (CLC) Ministry Underlying and supporting all the above is our Community Life Center. LEADERSHIP TEAMS Ministry takes a lot of dedicated people to make it happen—all following the Holy Spirit’s guidance toward a collective goal of changed lives. We hope to explain who these people are and describe their scope of responsibility and leadership. NW Leadership Team The leadership Team is made up of Elders and Pastoral Staff, all who work in total teamwork and integrated leadership. •

NW Elders As many churches do, the NWChurch uses the Apostle Paul’s writings to Timothy and Titus for characteristics that an elder should demonstrate when they serve. Because of this, our elder board consists of married men who are faithful followers, and qualified teachers. As a board, the elders set policy, hire Pastoral staff members (to entrust specific tasks to), and meet monthly as part of the entire leadership team to cultivate faith and relationship. In addition, as “shepherds” they personally engage those who call NWChurch “home” and attend to their spiritual and physical needs. Elder Emeritus: The Board of Elders recently established this new classification of church leadership. The purpose of this classification is to honor Elders who have served faithfully and provide a platform for continued service, honor and influence. This allows Elders who desire to “step out” of the regular administrative meetings and to be able to “step up” to a position that allows a person to continue serving this congregation. •

NW Pastoral Staff The Pastoral Staff has been hired and appointed by the elders to carry out the day-to-day ministry of the church in keeping with scripture and the policies established by the elders. This team works together to help set the vision and mission of the church, and to use their spiritual giftings to lead and serve the church.

Chris Goldman, Lead Pastor Teach and preach God’s word from the pulpit most Sundays, introduce occasional guest teachers, set the vision for ministry and lead the staff in carrying out ministry initiatives. Kent Landrum, Executive Pastor Responsible for the oversight of communications, finances, and overall campus usage. Lead Tech Team for the support of services and events. Piper Ditzler, Worship Pastor, Co-Pastor Student Ministries Leading the Worship Team as they help us worship God on Sundays, and mentoring the Youth Worship Team. Also charged to help lead the Student Ministry, in partnership with Jessie Heninger. Jessie Heninger, Co-Pastor Student Ministries Charged with leadership of Student Ministries, in partnership with Piper Ditzler. Brian Heninger, Pastor, Children’s Ministries Responsible for all areas in Children’s Ministry, leading a team of volunteers. Also key leadership of summer outreach event, Kids’ Camp. SUPPORT STAFF

Our Support Staff is vital to the effective operation of the church. This team works in concert with the Pastoral Staff to ensure the logistics of ministry are taken care of (database, facility, production/publishing, and event planning). Donna Braxton, Administrative Assistant (Mon-Fri) Donna is responsible for the scheduling of rooms and events for the church calendar. She also leads the faithful volunteers who help greet our guests to the Community Life Center. Julie Roberts, Administrative Assistant (Sun) Julie helps to manage Lead Pastor Chris Goldman’s calendar, covering the Connection Point desk on Sunday, and is responsible for directing Connect Card and prayer requests to appropriate staff members.

Debbie Mercado-Dorr, Production Assistant Debbie handles the production of all print and digital communication pieces, including the weekly handout (bulletin), the Friday e-Newsletter, announcement and sermon slides, and a myriad of other projects. She also manages the design and content on our website. Greg Orcutt, Facilities Manager Greg works part-time to help manage the upkeep and functionality of our Community Life Center. This often involves set up and clean-up for events. Barry Palmquist, Facilities Manager Barry is one of our newest team members and also helps part-time to help manage the upkeep and functionality of our Community Life Center.

PASTORAL CARE

Bill Lawrence, Care Pastor Bill’s role is to provide pastoral care for those who are in need, whether it be to walk with people through difficult times (prayer, illness, hospitalization and benevolence), and in helping families during times of bereavement. Bill also teaches a variety of classes.

MINISTRY LEADERS

As a church, the term “ministry” doesn’t refer to a task (i.e. we don’t have a coffee ministry). Ministries are made up of many teams and volunteers who perform various tasks and functions as part of that ministry. To serve as a Ministry Leader is an honorable position of leadership at Northwest. Ministry Leaders meet monthly with the staff, shape budgets for their various teams and activities, and serve in significant leadership roles. If you express interest in serving as part of a ministry team, the appropriate leader will be in touch to follow-up with any screening, certification, or information you need to serve.

CLEAR PATH TO PLUGGING IN At Northwest, we encourage people to “ramp up” and get involved. People can jump in at any point according to their spiritual giftedness, abilities, and passion. But here is our clear path to beginning fresh at Northwest. 1.

Church Attendance Most people begin by attending worship on Sunday mornings, Celebrate Recovery on Friday, or any number of community outreach events. The best way to begin connecting to show up on Sunday mornings, grab a scone or two, visit with the people who have gathered, and connect through the music and teaching.

2. Meet & Greet Monthly, we host an open “Meet & Greet” for people to meet some of the Pastoral Staff, Elders, and Support Staff. A quick overview of NW is presented (usually by the Lead Pastor). Snacks are provided, and it’s a great time to meet new people at NW. 3. Next Steps Online Survey If a person attends our Meet & Greet, they have a chance to fill out our Next Steps Survey. This is an exploration of your faith story, interests, and ministries that might match your gifts. Our goal is to understand better how we can come alongside you as pastors and teachers. In addition, this is our easiest way to connect electronically with Ministry Leaders. - Email is the first form of connection with most people and ministry leaders. - Conversations are the next step. We believe in a human-to-human conversation. - Exploring a variety of teams is important. Some teams are full or require training. - Ministry Faire’s are occasionally scheduled, in case you haven’t connected in a ministry yet.

4. Explore NW - “You are here” - 2-hour mini-seminar with Lead Pastor, Chris Goldman, and other leaders at NWChurch. This allows for a deeper dive into what NWChurch is all about and how to get plugged in. 5. ROOTED - 10-week pathway to discipleship Rooted is a short-term commitment to a small group as you work through Bible teaching. You will be challenged to develop a life of daily devotions, active service, the practice of prayer and fasting, and transformative conversations. 6. Community Life Groups - Doing Life together We are not meant to live life alone. God made us relational just like Him. There are lots of ways we connect with others, whether it’s because we share a similar life stage or we join groups that work or play together. NWChurch has a wide variety of groups to help you feel like you belong.

COMMUNICATION & RESOURCES Modern communication is challenging at best. Our culture smothers us with communication at every turn. However, we try to be clear about sharing with you about things that are coming up. Many things are posted and communicated in a variety of ways and in multiple places ... just so we can make sure you hear about what’s important to you. We employ the following communication tools to help people know what’s going on: •

Friday eNews emails are sent out weekly on Friday. This usually contains some thoughts from Lead Pastor Chris Goldman that tease up what’s coming Sunday ... and also previews important and upcoming events. If you are not currently receiving these eNewsletters, please contact Donna Braxton (donna@nwchurch.com) and ask to be added to our database.

Weekly handouts (bulletins) are distributed as people come in the door on Sundays. These contain important information about what’s coming up, so be sure to read them. This includes a “Connect Card” designed to share your prayer needs and provide basic information so we can stay connected.

The NWChurch App puts all the email and handout information in your pocket. You can use this for seeing the church calendar, event information, do your generous giving, take occasional sermon notes, etc. You can also listen to the most recent sermon on Facebook Live. You can even use the app to share prayer requests, rather than the Connect Card. Look up our app ( Northwest Church Lynnwood) on the following app sources (Apple iTunes, Google Play, Amazon App Store, and Roku Channel Store).

Our website is a great source of information­—www.nwchurch.com. While the home page is generally geared for our visitors, you can access upcoming news and events by clicking that tab on the top right. You can also set up regular giving online.

Team emails are sent out to specific teams by staff or ministry leaders as needed.

Ministry emails are communications to an entire grouping of ministry volunteers (including all teams in that ministry).

The live answering of phones in the office is our policy. We don’t screen calls or give you a phone tree to navigate UNLESS the office is closed or all personnel are busy with people.

Public announcements and promotions are limited to a few things each week; usually events that have an urgent need or a very wide appeal. We do not promote all activities vocally from the stage.

MAKING NW YOUR CHURCH HOME At NWChurch, “placing membership” is really a declaration that you want NW to be your church home. This means the leaders will look out for you spiritually, notice when you aren’t around, call if we’re worried about you, and communicate non-public information to you periodically. The Bible teaches that God adds to the church people who are being saved. If you’re saved, you are part of the Kingdom and we want to serve you and serve with you. It helps if we understand where you are on your faith journey. We believe God wants everyone to: 1.

Apostle Peter’s Vision of the Church The Living Stone and a Chosen People As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him—you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For in Scripture it says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.” Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” and, “A stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.

Apostle Paul’s Vision of the Church Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself. Ephesians 1:22 (NLT) The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ. Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit. Yes, the body has many different parts, not just one part. If the foot says, “I am not a part of the body because I am not a hand,” that does not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear says, “I am not part of the body because I am not an eye,” would that make it any less a part of the body? If the whole body were an eye, how would you hear? Or if your whole body were an ear, how would you smell anything? But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it. How strange a body would be if it had only one part! Yes, there are many parts, but only one body. The eye can never say to the hand, “I don’t need you.” The head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you.” In fact, some parts of the body that seem weakest and least important are actually the most necessary. And the parts we regard as less honorable are those we clothe with the greatest care. So we carefully protect those parts that should not be seen, while the more honorable parts do not require this special care. So God has put the body together such that extra honor and care are given to those parts that have less dignity. This makes for harmony among the members, so that all the members care for each other. If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad. Our first official church-owned building was the site of Northwest Church in Ballard.

Northwest Church first started meeting in 1902 at the Gardner House on Eastern Avenue, north of Lake Union.

Merl Beagle, the first minister at Shoreline Christian Church.

The Northwest Church bus would pick up neighborhood children so they could come to Sunday School.

Shoreline Christian Church was well known for its special emphasis on producing preachers, missionaries, promoting Christian education and church camp ministry.

Shoreline believed that In 2004, NWChurch in special way, and merged God was moving in a reline Christian Church. into one body with Sho In 2016, the No rthwest Churc h sought to expan d its outreach into the community and purchased the former LA Fitne ss building. The Community Life Center wa s born ... a comm unity center wh ere a church happ ens to meet.

OUR HISTORY For 116 years, Northwest Church has been on a faith journey, joining God’s Spirit to carry out the mission God has entrusted to us. First in North Seattle, then in Shoreline, and now in Lynnwood, God has led us step-by-step through distinct phases of ministry and growth. Through each phase, our emphasis has been on reaching out and spreading God’s kingdom, calling all people to follow Jesus. We live in a time and place where need is great. The Puget Sound region is the 8th most “un-churched” area in the U.S. and 3rd highest “de-churched” population. Lynnwood is a vibrant, growing city with diverse ethnic groups and nations of origin, including newcomers without access to medical care and other services. People from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds live here. Many are affluent. Others are homeless or struggling to feed their families.

Northwest Church moved to this Lynnwood neighborhood intentionally because God gave us a vision for effective opportunities to spread His kingdom and share Jesus here. Along the way, God provided us a new story of His faithfulness, guidance, and direction regarding the Community Life Center. Northwest Church had prayed for many years about a new meeting place more suited for outreach. When we bid on this building, a real estate developer outbid us with the intention of tearing it down to develop apartments on this property. But God stepped in. For the first time in this developer’s career—and after remarking during his building tour that it would be a good place for a church—he resold the building instead of developing it himself. Northwest Church was able to buy the building after all! This was powerful confirmation that God called us on this mission. It was not our idea. And we could not do it without Him walking ahead of us.
