T

he summer season is my favorite season in Seattle. It’s the most beautiful place I’ve been on earth ... especially during these three months. It’s also a season for the church to adjust our regular schedule and enjoy some special connection points.

As you look at your summer schedule, we hope NEXT helps you decide when to travel, how to invest, and where to go. We are planning to spend some time in the local park BBQ’ing together, and enjoying some time to connect outdoors. We will host our annual Kids Camp—free for every child in our area as a way to “transform life and community” right here in Lynnwood. Our site will be a primary feeding location for the Edmonds Foundation throughout the summer, and the Community Life Center will host numerous church and community events. All that to say this ... Summer is a time to shift gears, enjoy creation, and invest time in relationship, service, and rest. There’s a phrase from Psalm 121:1–2 (The Message) — “I look up to the mountains; does my strength come from mountains? No, my strength comes from God, who made heaven, and earth, and mountains.” As the light in the Puget Sound grows and morning dawns earlier, I look to the mountains. I see the majestic Olympics. I take in the powerful Cascades. And I remember, God is a God of beauty, wonder, and creativity. Enjoy the summer. Enjoy the Northwest. And make your participation at the NWChurch a priority for your family. Blessings to all. We hope NEXT helps you plan what’s next.

Compass Classes In-Depth Bible Teaching for Adults

June 3 - August 26 We encourage you to get connected with a Bible-teaching Compass Class on Sunday mornings. It is far too easy to simply come to church and then slip out quickly. We want to get to know you better, so join us! Classes are offered during both first and second services. This allows you to attend both a service and a class— deepening your understanding of the Bible and building your relationships at Northwest Church. During the first service - 9:10 am • PARENTS TALK - Room 108 Led by Rebecca Elkins & Melissa Eller Come learn from parents in our NWC family, benefit from their stories, and shed light from a Biblical perspective. The class is for parents (and extended family) of children of all ages. Please note - No perfect parents allowed! • THE GLORIOUS JESUS: A STUDY OF HEBREWS - Room 120 Led by Jared Jones We will study Jesus’ superiority by comparing and contrasting Jesus to key historical people and events from the Old Testament. We will explore practical applications for deepening our faithfulness to Jesus—the only One worthy of all our total trust and devotion.

6

During the second service - 10:30 a.m. • LIVING OUT BIBLICAL TRUTHS & PRINCIPLES IN THE DIGITAL ERA Room 120 Led by Marvin Smith & Derek Fike We’ll explore Christian living in the post-Modern, post-Christian, posttruth era. Integrating the timeless truth of the Bible into our daily lives is challenging at best. That challenge is compounded by a society that does not embrace an ultimate truth. How do we form, cultivate and nurture relationships in a virtual world that will reflect spiritual-fruit bearing results? • DRAW NEAR - Room 108 Led by Ashleigh Hess & Joanna Smith Interact with the living, breathing Word of God through journaling. This is a wisdom practice that quiets our mind to draw near to God. We’ll explore personal learning styles and see various journaling techniques that best suit these styles. While some use only a pencil, others will mix colors and create abstract pieces. This class is for everyone, and no prior skills are necessary. These Compass Classes will be offered starting June 3 and ending on August 26.

SAVE THE DATE  JULY 8 RICK ATCHLEY GUEST SPEAKER @ NWCHURCH

Rick Atchley has been the Senior Teaching Minister at The Hills Church in North Richland Hills, Texas since 1989. The Hills Church is one of the largest churches in America today. Rick reflected recently,

One of my great joys has been the privilege of raising my kids in a church that values children. I grew up in a religious tradition that taught me to fear God, but not to love him. Even worse, I was not sure God really loved me. That’s one reason why I am such a believer in the power of gospel preaching. I was blessed in college and in my young adult years to hear the gospel of God’s grace preached, and over time I began to believe in a God who loved me, who was for me, and who did through Christ what I could never do ... so that He could spend eternity with me. That’s why Romans 8 is my favorite chapter in the Bible. I love the strong declaration that ‘there is no condemnation in Christ,’ and still am moved by the realization that ‘if God is for us, who can be against us?’

425.921.6400 | www.nwchurch.com

My desire is for the church is to be a church where that same strong message of the grace of God is declared clearly and boldly. It is the good news that can save anyone, and the only news that can save everyone.

Rick will join us on Sunday, July 8 when he returns to NWChurch after five years to see our new mission in our new site at the renovated Community Life Center. Invite your friends and family to hear one of the best preachers of our time.

CELEBRATERECOVERY

A CHRIST-CENTERED Recovery Program

Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-centered program with foundations firmly established in Biblical truth. We believe in God’s healing power in our lives, regardless of our struggles. Meeting on Friday evenings, we work through “8 Recovery Principles,” which allow us to “be changed.” The 12 Steps with accompanying Scriptures and the 8 Principles based on the Beatitudes offer participants a clear path of salvation and discipleship; bringing hope, freedom, sobriety, healing, and the opportunity to give back one day at a time through our one and only true Higher Power, Jesus Christ. At Celebrate Recovery, we want to help you find peace and purpose—leaving the emotional baggage behind. We would welcome you to our weekly meetings every Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. If you come at 6:00 p.m., we will even feed you a delicious dinner. Don’t let the tough times get you down—God wants to help and heal you.

As human beings there is something deep in our souls that desires to connect with others ... a need to belong. We look for opportunities to walk with people in times of joy, sorrow, and in the everyday moments. Here at Northwest Church, we encourage people to join Community Life Groups as a way to connect with others, build relationships, and walk with one another as we learn to love God and understand how much God loves us. Health Ministry News 2018 Focusing on Mental Health In our church-wide survey done last Fall, one of the most frequently listed concerns was around issues of mental health. Our goal with the survey was to identify the top two concerns within our congregation and offer education and programs in these areas within the first year. Because of the strong response, our focus for this quarter is to plan events and resources in the mental health area. You will soon see information in the Lobby about resources available in Lynnwood and other areas. It is our hope to provide educational offerings appropriate for each age group. The first step is to identify and organize a Health Ministry sub-group to plan for these events. Please contact Kay Koontz if you are interested in helping to organize these educational events. REMINDER: The Puget Sound Christian Clinic can provide ongoing mental health counseling for only a suggested $10 donation per visit. Locations are in Lynnwood at our own Community Life

Center and at their Shoreline Haller Lake facility. For more information, call PSCC at (206) 363-4105 (ext. 701). Virtual Walk from Seattle to Jerusalem Our recent virtual Walk To Jerusalem was a great success, thanks to all of you who participated. This offering was in response to the #1 concern from our survey—that of exercise and nutrition. This activity, while increasing exercise, also offered nutritional recipes from the “countries” we traveled through and spiritual devotions relating to those areas. Not only did we benefit from the reflections and dietary recommendations, but we surpassed our collective activity goal of 9,699 miles to reach “Jerusalem” for a total of 10,905 miles. Way to go! Safety & Security A response plan has been developed for medical emergencies at Lynnwood Community Life Center, especially for Sunday services. The Safety Committee met and developed plans and schedule for training nurses and other volunteers in AED and CPR. We hope to implement these plans in June. 

Ministries at Northwest Church Community Life Groups Our mission is to promote discipleship through relational environments. God has called us out of our culture to be a distinct community of faith. It is in community life groups that we can share our lives as well as our journey of faith.

Community Life Center (CLC) The CLC exists to serve the mission of the Northwest Church and to bless the Lynnwood community. We strive to maintain an efficient, safe, clean, attractive, and inviting campus by creating necessary services and caring for the physical environments of our campus.

Celebrate Recovery The purpose of the Northwest Church Celebrate Recovery ministry is to fellowship and celebrate God´s healing power in our lives through the “8 Recovery Principles.” This experience allows us to “be changed.”

Children’s Ministry We provide a Bible-based, age-appropriate community for children birth–6th grade. We invite every child into God’s story, showing and sharing the love of Christ with them from the day they are born. Compass Ministry The Compass Ministry is the adult education program at NW Church and its purpose is to offer high quality, challenging, life-impacting Bible classes that will be used by the Spirit of God to transform believers by pointing them to Jesus Christ, the One who gives Life.

Student Ministry We believe that the Junior High and High School years are an important stage of life. These students are the next generation. They are tomorrow’s leaders and influencers. NW Church strives to be a place where students can hang out with friends, have a ton of fun and figure out what God has for their lives. Pastoral Care We care for people by strengthening the weak, healing the sick, binding up the injured, bringing back the strays, searching for the lost, and serving the church with gentleness and humility is the role of Pastoral Care Ministries and teams (Prayer, Illness, Bereavement/Memorial Services , Weddings, Newborns, etc.).

Missions Ministry The goal of the mission’s ministry is to equip and mobilize the Northwest Church for cross-cultural ministry both locally and internationally.

First Impressions We have a passion for welcoming and serving those who walk through our doors as guests. We strive to provide a loving atmosphere of care and acceptance as we welcome others and provide any informational assistance that they need. As our guests become our friends, we also strive to continue to minister to them and get to know them. Our eventual goal is to invite them to our Gateway experience where they can learn how to become partners and a part of our church family. In short, we want to be the face of Jesus to those around us. Worship The worship ministry seeks to create an experience of worship, praise, prayer and artistic expression. This experience centers around the sharing of communion, the teaching from scripture, and the utilization of Christian songs.

Way of Life Our Core Values

We teach a way of life that encourages knowing God. Paul talks about the way of life we were taught when we came to faith, “… to put off the old self ... and put on the new self” with a new attitude in our minds. Here is a simplified progression of the way of life. Simplicity We begin with learning to simplify our lives so we have margin for God. Sabbath We then embrace and principle of Sabbath; the principle that getting rest is both necessary and healthy. Family Simplicity and Sabbath have an immediate affect on our family life—allowing us to put family as a priority while not neglecting important commitments. Mission Now that the home-bases are covered, we can actually think about the mission of Christ no longer as an afterthought or a burden place on top of a hectic life. Neighboring We are reminded that our mission begins right where we live. Jesus said the greatest commandment was loving God with our heart, soul, mind, and strength and loving our neighbors. Neighboring is an intentional way of life. Community But we are called into community beyond our own neighborhoods. Learning to value community (and to put healthy boundaries around community) is core to living an abundant life.

22

For more information

Generosity In all that we do, we want to be generous. This goes for time, possessions, talents, and money. Our goal is to cultivate generous hearts more than disciplined givers. Health Now that we’ve simplified, are resting and valuing family as we should, we begin to work on whole-person health (heart, soul, mind and yes ‌ body). Devotion Undergirding all of these practices is a high priority on spiritual formation flowing out of a life of devotion. Developing practices that lead toward devotion takes us towards true discipleship in Christ. Celebration As God celebrates, God wants us to celebrate. Too often, followers of Christ forget how many parties Jesus attended and how He used celebration to express faith and love. Worship As we live this new way of life, we begin to understand that worship is a move of the heart, not just an event on our schedule. Learning How do we keep fresh? How do we continue to grow? We become life-long learners. Learning IS a way of life.
