VETERINARY PROFESSIONALISM VETE R I N A R I A N S A R E P R O FES S I O NA LS DEDI CATED TO TREAT ING AN I M A L S . T H I S D E D I CATI O N TA K ES O N MA NY F O RMS . Veterinarians education includes first obtaining a four-year bachelor’s degree usually in physiology, zoology or animal science. As a group they have one of the highest-grade point averages of any profession. They need to have work experience in the profession as well. Upon acceptance, they spend another 4 years to obtain a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (DVM). They are in class for 40 hours a week, then often studying until the early hours of the morning. They do all this to graduate deep in student debt and for an average salary of less than 100K a year. Long days of work are occupied by a litany of appointments and consultationsfor the sick, injured and dying pets that parade through. Veterinarians scramble to diagnose, treat, do surgery and procedures on everything from a 1 oz. newborn kitten to 185lb Mastiffs. Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVT) have a 2-year BA degree in Veterinary Technology. RVT’s are the truly compassionate part of our profession. Most RVT’s have once slept in dog run all night with a sick or dying dog. They hustle to medicate, vaccinate, draw labs, take x-rays, and assist in surgery. Their day often ends being exhausted, covered in hair, blood, urine and excrement and yet they smile from the opportunity to save a furry friend. All this for half of what a teacher makes.

Dr. Carroll

Along with DVM’s and RVT’s are unlicensed technicians. They are the muscle of the practice. The hold/ restrain and assist the DVM or RVT in everything they do. They have to be able to handle a 15-gm. bird and a vicious unruly 100lb dog. They spend a lot of time on their hands and knees. They scrape, scrub, disinfect and clean everything. Their only gratification comes from their love of animals. The receptionists are truly on the front line. They answer a continuous stream of phone calls, sort emails and faxes, thwart all questions, fill and dispense medications. They have the unwanted tasks of collecting payment and arranging euthanasias. Receptionists are the most loved and also vilified employees. Their service remains the most under appreciated. Last, but not least is the kennel staff. They run animals and get to do everything that everyone else doesn’t want to do. They get pooped on, vomited on and even worse things. They scrub cages, walls, ceilings and floors. They do mounds of laundry every day. They do what everyone else tells them to do. They get bumped, bruised, scratched and bit. All this for an entry level salary. Their joy is the cute loving puppies or kittens. These are all the aspects of dedication. We want our clients to know we care and are proud of our honorable profession. — Dr. David C. Carroll

JERMAIN DANTÉ ARTIST

By Kathleen Reynolds

“I love what I do. To get up and create is a gift. Art is my passion and life.” ~ Jermaine Danté 14

Jermaine Danté’s artwork evokes action, vitality, a visceral experience. His portraits range from provocative to whimsical and sells for thousands of dollars both nationally and internationally. He’s filled with such a need to create that oftentimes, inspired, he’ll leap out of bed at 1 or 2 a.m. and begin painting in his studio. Yet he describes himself as a laid-back kind of guy. “I’m mellow,” he says. “But once my dad visited me when I was painting rap artist Tupac Shakur and asked me why I was being aggressive. Apparently, I wasn’t myself.” That stemmed from his approach to each subject. He’ll spend many hours researching, watching videos and thumbing through photos of his subject. If the person is a professional singer, he’ll listen to albums to get a sense of the person.

He’d spent two and a half weeks researching and listening to Tupac and the singer’s forceful nature had rubbed off. “I had to get back

to being myself,” Jermaine says and laughs.

much influences me in its attitude and culture.”

It’s improbable but true that Danté has never had formal art education. He’s watched YouTube art videos and read art history books but hasn’t taken a lesson. How can his portraits be so spot-on, the execution instantly recognizable? “I was blessed with a gift,” is his simple answer. Jermaine is a local. Born in Vallejo, he grew up mostly in American

When Jermaine was about three years old, his mother read him children’s books. Once, she left the room, inadvertently leaving a pen within the toddler’s grasp. She dashed back when she realized he’d been busy with the pen and was amazed with what he’d done. “I’d sketched Winnie the Pooh. It looked just like him. I didn’t know what I was doing,

Christmas, they gave me arts and crafts materials. I’d watch Disney, look at comics and coloring Photo Credit: books Max Delsid and draw the characters myself. Drawing was my outlet.”

“My parents nurtured this talent,” says Jermaine. “For birthdays and

In what he describes as a downward part of his life, in 2013 Danté suffered from depression. Art helped him approach the next stage of his life. “I was blessed to hit rock bottom,” he says.

“I committed myself to art. That’s when I journeyed to art on YouTube, I studied literature on art masters of the 19th and 20th centuries.” He began showing his pieces at art shows. “I monetized art and pursued it one thousand percent.” His artwork is shown in tasting rooms throughout the area and on social media. Currently, a few of his pieces are displayed at the Napa Chamber of Commerce on First Street. He notes that he shows in places that, “Demonstrate respect and appreciation for fine art.” For Black History Month in February, he was invited to paint live in the middle of Macy’s Union Square in San Francisco. “It was a busy Saturday, and I must have seen 400 people in the six hours I was there. Being an extrovert helps in situations like that. In school athletics I was used to being in front of crowds. I loved it.”

Most of his promotion is through word-of-mouth. “I have circles of friends that include art collectors.” Charity work is critical to Jermaine. “I donate work often, to the Make a Wish Foundation, Doctors without Borders, Mentis and others. It’s important because I’ve been given a gift. An artist has to monetize it, but not in those situations it’s important to give my heart and time to help others.” He can’t pinpoint his most popular portraits. “Art is subjective to collectors. I focus on portraits of heroes and those by whom I’m inspired such as Martin Luther King and Malcom X. I learn a lot about the people before I paint them. I’ve learned more while painting than any other way.” Although he’s experimented with watercolor and water-based aerosols, his primary paint medium is acrylic for its vibrancy. “I enjoy working with colors and often use colors based on my mood that day. If I’m in a lower energy space, I might go with darker shades. Yellows and oranges are a great mood. Red is aggressive; dark blue is also.” While painting, he loves to listen to jazz. “Jazz music, to me, is purple and violet. That’s how I see it.” Acrylic paints are also fast drying. Since much of his work is done on commission, that’s a benefit if a collector wants a painting as a birthday or anniversary gift. He stresses, though, that the amount of time and study he puts into his portraits preclude him from quick turn arounds. “I scroll through hundreds of pictures until one image jumps out. I submerge myself in the subject.” Coming up, he’s been invited to do a pop-up show at West Elm in Emeryville, although no date has yet been set. “I’m a go-getter. Of course, I allow the universe to bless me with opportunities, but I also go after them. I love what I do. To get up and create is a gift. Art is my passion and life.” To learn more about Jermaine Danté see his website:

THE SUMMER TO BE

Entertained! by Lisa Adams Walter

Bottle Rock Napa Valley

I

It does not seem that long ago that entertainment in the Napa Valley consisted of a singular annual winery summer music festival at Robert Mondavi Winery, occasional symphony concerts, a drive-in movie park on Foster Road, two movie houses located in River Park and another, now the Uptown

20

Theatre live event venue, right next to First Presbyterian Church.

and performance venues were locked up and sat dark.

Fast forward to the past sixteen months, truly not that long ago, and it could be argued that there was NO entertainment in the Napa Valley. Another casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic: theaters, museums

When I was asked what I missed most during shutdowns, other than spending time with friends and family, my number one answer was this: live entertainment.

The Deck at Ace & Vine

Sure, I streamed some concerts, binged Netflix, and Zoomed with friends. In reality, though, there is nothing like being there in person, experiencing the personality, dedication and emotion of an artist baring their talent, and even their soul. Add to that, entertainment is one of the final fitting pieces of the puzzle, that completes the wine and food experience, and therefore the wine country lifestyle, that can be found only in the Napa Valley. “Live arts and entertainment are flashes of soul and inspiration in which we can congregate, reflect and participate,” said Lisa Saunders, a Napa wine industry professional and trained actress who has shared stages with artists such as Rita Moreno and Jill Eikenberry.

“Applauding works of art, dancing to the music, laughing together, it all rebalances our shared humanity, reminds us we are not in this alone and gives us strength to come together, work well and play well. It is maintenance for the heart and soul. Just like coming together at the dinner table with food and wine for nourishment, and to share the day. When Napa comes together for live music or performances, sharing those experiences is just a super cool thing,” she added. Thankfully, with creativity and gumption, and with safety precautions and guidelines in place, live entertainment and art venues have now opened up. The Blue Note Napa partnered with Charles Krug Winery to present an outdoor concert series, marking the return of live entertainment in May. Napa journalist Paul Franson who publishes the weekly insider newsletter NapaLife, keeps his finger on the pulse of our community, and has been tracking the wine, culinary and entertainment scenes for 25 years. He remembers that the Napa Valley was all about wine when he first moved here, but reports that it has changed.

Blue Note at Charles Krug

“Over time, food became a major part of Napa’s appeal to visitors and another source

of our fame. When I started NapaLife 16 years ago, the focus was on food and restaurants, with little about the arts, whether performing or visual, since they were not a big factor in our life or an appeal to outsiders,” Franson recalled, “Napa Valley developed more and more in all arts, but especially music and other entertainment.” While long on the worldwide stage in terms of wine and cuisine, Napa has certainly hit the global stage in terms of the arts. “Though the Mondavi Concert Series was a pioneer, it was the classical festivals — Festival del Sole, now Festival Napa Valley, Music in the Vineyards and John Kongsgaard’s chamber music festival that solidified our position. Then Napa Valley Film Festival broadened our appeal and BottleRock was the breakthrough,” Franson added, “It made Napa Valley

as big a phenomenon as South by Southwest or Coachella, and concurrently, the Uptown, the Blue Note, JaM Cellars at the Opera House and Lincoln Theater attracted top acts while new series like The Oxbow RiverStage, Live in the Vineyard and The Jazz Getaway also increased the appeal.” Franson has also noticed the explosion of music at restaurants, wineries and other venues, all added to attract patrons, not as paid concerts, and publishes perpetual and constantly updated lists of acts, artists, venues and happy hours available at NapaLife.com. The summer of 2021 really is the summer to be entertained. This current decade is anticipated to be akin to the Roaring ‘20s of a century ago, and summertime entertainment has roared back into town!

“It has come roaring back, with people almost desperate to get out and return to a normal life,” said Franson, “The pandemic has made most of us appreciate what is available, in fact, and all venues are thriving.” Anxious fans have naturally created high demand. Tickets for paid events go on sale early, so do not delay. Check out the websites for venues and full schedules. Get out and enjoy! Several of the smaller venues that offer live music include hotels, urban tasting rooms and restaurants. The Andaz and Archer hotels, as well as the Napa River Inn in Napa, and Hotel Villagio in Yountville all have live music options either as part of their bar scene, or in the lobby. JaM Cellars in Napa has long presented live music, which has become so popular that they now take reservations. Be Bubbly, also in downtown Napa, too

offers live music, sometimes on Sunday afternoons to wrap the weekend. Towns throughout the valley are also back to presenting live events. The Town of Yountville hosts free summertime Sunday evening concerts at the town’s Veterans Park with artists and bands such as Roem Baur, Fog City Swampers, Buck Nickels & Loose Change, Steel Jam and Monica & Chad scheduled, along with a rotating food truck for hungry concert goers each week. The St. Helena Summer Concert Series is set for the last four Thursdays of this month up valley at Lyman Park, and they too are free. Cameo Cinema, the darling, antique movie house which is also in St. Helena, has reopened, as well as created a drive-in theater movie experience at Charles Krug Winery — and here’s to that winery for so nicely partnering with small, intimate venues to make entertainment available and accessible for so many outdoors. A new form of entertainment for locals that surprisingly opened during the pandemic, is Ace & Vine, a luxury dining and gaming location on the Napa River. An expansive outdoor deck is ideal for safely socializing, several large screens are placed throughout the venue to track sporting events, and a lively card room is positioned at one end of the establishment. Other than players intent upon winning in that one room, it does not feel like a casino at all.

scheduled upcoming events. Finally, the granddaddy, or perhaps the grandchild of all live events in Napa, BottleRock, returns for a Labor Day Weekend run in September. In the future, this festival known as the “First Taste of Summer” will again be held on Memorial Day Weekend. Headliners this year include Stevie Nicks, Guns N’ Roses, Foo Fighters, Brandi Carlile, Maren Morris, Miley Cyrus and Megan Thee Stallion. I cannot wait to get a taste of summer at every one of these nearby events and venues. Like me, you too may be looking forward to having your heart and soul revived through seeing each other, while supporting the arts through live music and entertainment. “I am looking forward to all of the outdoor activities that allow our community to reconnect, celebrate and renew, especially live music as it is incredibly restorative and healing,” Saunders concluded, “Add to that, reconnecting with friends and neighbors that have been sheltering in place, means that these in-person experiences strengthen and heal ourselves and our extended family of the Napa community. A smile, a high-five, a toast of Sauvignon Blanc, we’ve all been through a lot in the last year and now we can reconnect and celebrate.”

Uptown Theatre recently announced new and rescheduled shows beginning in August including Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, John Hiatt & The Jerry Douglas Band, Nikki Glaser, Felipe Esparza, Buddy Guy with Ally Venable, Michael W. Smith, The Beach Boys and Judy Collins. The Oxbow RiverStage concert series, related to Blue Note Entertainment, also begins in August, with acts including Mt. Joy and Trampled by Turtles, Billy Idol, Brett Dennen, Widespread Panic, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Death Cab for Cutie, Gary Clark Jr., Herbie Hancock and STS9. Blue Note Napa at Charles Krug, as earlier mentioned, lists Tony! Toni! Toné!, Kenny G., Mama Said, KT Tunstall, Taj Mahal, Dave Koz and Friends and Jimmy Eat World as Yountville Music in the Park

THE CALIFORNIA BIRTHDAY RULE: HOW CAN IT HELP SENIORS? While none of us were having birthday parties in 2020, the state of California amended a little known law entitled CA legislation 407, also known as the “California Birthday Rule”. No, the government isn’t going to send you a birthday cake every year and yes, you still have to pay sales tax on most of your purchases for your special day. So, what exactly can the CA birthday rule do for Medicare Beneficiaries? WHAT IS THE CALIFORNIA BIRTHDAY RULE AND HOW DOES IT WORK? Currently, federal law does not guarantee individuals to obtain a Medicare Supplement (also known as Medigap) outside your Medicare Open Enrollment period, minus a few exceptions. This means that if later down the road you decide to shop for a different supplement provider, you could be subjected to medical underwriting. This is no longer true for CA residents. If you reside in California, you now have 60 days from your birthday every year to switch from one Medicare Supplement to another. To exercise this right, the following criteria must be met: • You must be currently enrolled in a Medicare Supplement • The plan you switch to must be of equal or lesser benefits • You must be a California Resident and be within 60 days after your birthday REASONS TO EXERCISE THE CALIFORNIA BIRTHDAY RULE: YOUR CURRENT PREMIUMS ARE TOO HIGH: You may have noticed your premiums have greatly increased since you first enrolled. Or maybe your circumstances have changed and you can no longer afford your policy. If this has happened to you, looking into other supplements that offer similar benefits but lower premiums could save you significantly. SATISFACTION WITH YOUR CURRENT PROVIDER: While Medicare Supplement plans are standardized, the insurance companies are not created equal. Insurance companies with excellent customer service, hassle free claims processes, and prompt medical payments can help minimize the stress and burden of medical bills. GUARANTEED COVERAGE: Switching supplement policies is possible outside the 60 day birthday rule, but not guaranteed. If you are within 60 days after your birthday, now is a great time to consider a switch.

Boz Scaggs fell in love with the Uptown Theatre the first time he played there, saying it was one of his favorite venues. Since that performance in 2010, he’s returned almost every year. “We hear that a lot,” said Tim Herman, co-owner with managing partner George Altamura of the Uptown. “When we were refurbishing the place, we wanted the best sound possible, and worked with some of the best technicians in the world.” Herman says that equipment is just part of the equation that has made them a preferred venue for so many artists. “Our staff and tech crew work their tails off when artists are here, to make sure everything is perfect. They are amazing.” Just as much as performers, audiences love the Uptown experience, and perfect sound is just one of the factors that makes an evening there so enjoyable. It’s also a very intimate setting. “One of the first things we did was to reduce the number of seats. There were originally 1,300, which admittedly were built for very small people,” Herman said, laughing. “We took the number down to 857.” The Uptown opened as a movie theater in 1937, and was turned into a two-plex in 1973. By 2000, it was in bad shape. The last people to watch a movie there were offered blankets when they walked in, as there was

no heat and no money to fix it. The new partners bought the theater in 2001, figuring to remodel and open a couple of years later. “Before we started, we had to see what was there. As soon as we saw how spectacular it could be, that ‘couple of years’ turned into nine,” said Herman. “For years, the theater had been a four-plex, and one of the first things we did was tear down the dividing walls. When we did, it exposed the old paint job, which was really a work of art. We started peeling it back and agreed we couldn’t just repaint it, we had to fully restore it.” The same thing happened with the Mural, when they discovered that the ridges on the ceiling were actually copper frames bordering art work. “There was no question – the mural had to stay.” Altamura found an artist who specialized in ceilings, and who had done a lot of work on casinos in Dubai, to restore the Uptown ceiling. Cameos were repainted using the faces

of the partners daughters and granddaughters. Meanwhile, a series of support beams had to be built to handle the lighting and sound system. The results of it all was to create not just an entertainment venue, but a jewel. Opening night was in May 2010. Unfortunately, by Herman’s assessment, it was far from perfect. “The audience loved it, and to them, it sounded great. But what they couldn’t hear was that the music bounced off the ceiling and back down to the band, so they heard it twice,” said Herman. An engineer in his former life, Herman immediately researched sound panels and redesigned some to accommodate their needs. He built them on a pulley system, so they could be raised and lowered until the absolute best results were obtained. “Truthfully, it was a fun challenge and the results were good.”

Herman, an engineer and scientist, moved to Silicon Valley from his hometown of Cincinnati, in 1979. At the time, the semiconductor business had a unique problem with pollution. “The industry used a lot of nasty gases,” said Herman, “and it was hard to control them.” He invented a few machines that took care of the problem, opening his own business in 1981. He was wildly successful, and was able to sell the company and retire in 1999. He was a young man, and knew what he wanted to do. “I did very well, and wanted to give back, both financially and by volunteering.” He started several foundations that worked to “empower kids around the world.” He hired someone with ties to the United Nations, and started an organization to stop child soldiering, and to help former child soldiers get back into society. That morphed into working with the Church of Sweden, sponsoring a group of psychologists who work with kids affected by natural disasters like floods and earthquakes. It was seed work, of sorts – the psychologists trained locals to do the work and eventually take over the effort. Not all of his philanthropy is international. Herman has been on the board of Justin-Siena High School. He spent nine years on the Queen of the Valley Foundation Board, two as chair, then spent another nine on the Advisory board, with two years as chair. He is now on the Regional Board of Providence Health in Northern California which the Queen of the Valley Medical Center is a part. Herman’s late wife suffered major brain trauma after a horse-riding accident in 2007. The Queen didn’t have a neuro Surgeon on staff, much less a neurology department. Fog prevented his wife from being

Tim Herman and George Altamura at the ribbon cutting in 2010.

air lifted to another hospital, and she had to be taken to a hospital in Santa Rosa by amblance. “Even if the Queen had had a neurology department, it wouldn’t have saved her.” Still, Herman wanted to make sure no one else was in that predicament, and he funded the Peggy Herman Neuroscience Center at the Queen, which employees a team of Neuro Surgeons affiliated with UCSF. Herman and Altamura were casual acquaintances when Altamura approached him about joining a partnership to purchase the Uptown. “There wasn’t much nightlife here at the time, and it sounded like it would be good for Napa,” he said. Initially, Herman was at the theater all the time. “I’m not real musically inclined, but I love seeing people enjoy themselves.” Things were going well, and then the earthquake hit in 2014. Part of the ceiling came down, destroying chairs with it. “We are so fortunate that happened in the dead of night.” The repair took months. Things were back on track, and then COVID struck. “Our last show was in March of 2020.” Last year marked the tenth anniversary of the Uptown theater’s run under Herman and Altamura. The celebration had to be postponed, but will begin in earnest August 20th when Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, a Napa favorite, returns to reopen the venue. He’s thoroughly enjoys working with Altamura. “It’s been a really good experience. He’s a great guy, and we’ve had a fun ride. We’re looking forward to opening the doors again, and I know a lot of locals are too.”

NAPA FARMERS MARKET: BUILDING COMMUNITY AROUND LOCAL FOOD by Cara Mae Wooledge, MPH | photos by JL Sousa

Michelin Star Chef Ken Frank of La Toque goes “Shopping for the Shelter” using cash donations from our customers to create nutritious meals for Abode Services homeless clients.

T

This summer is shaping up to be the best yet at the Napa Farmers Market! The season is already sizzling with July’s featured Harvest of the Month picks: sweet corn and plums. Shop and support local farmers and small business vendors every Tuesday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. If you haven’t visited us in a while, we’re located in the City of Napa parking lot, the old Cinedome Theater site, at 1100 West Street in Downtown Napa. As we begin to put the pandemic behind us, now is the perfect opportunity to reflect on how the Napa Farmers Market was able to build community around local food during a year filled with unprecedented challenges.

FARMERS MARKETS ARE ESSENTIAL

In 2020 the Napa Farmers Market remained open and operating as an essential food business without interruption. We accomplished this incredible feat thanks to strong support from Napa City and County government, local businesses, and community partners. Before COVID, the market was enjoyed by many as an optional activity. During the early days of “pandemic panic buying”, the Napa Farmers Market became the only place folks could find some staple items, like eggs. 38

July 2021

The Brooks-Garza family stops in at Long Meadow Ranch for California Certified Organic veggies farm-fresh from Rutherford.

We all experienced first-hand the fact that farmers markets are essential businesses that support local food systems by keeping farmers farming, small businesses operating and getting local food directly to customers. Rutherford-based Long Meadow Ranch joined the Napa Farmers Market after hearing the call to action at the 2010 Napa County Local Food Forum. Owners Ted and Laddie Hall want to ensure their California Certified Organic produce, meat and eggs stay in our community. “Farmers work so hard to cultivate crops, raise animals humanely and harvest the bounty for everyone to enjoy,” explained Laddie. “Farmers markets play a crucial role in the farm-to-fork destination by providing a place for us to directly connect and build relationships with customers.” Last year the Napa Farmers Market welcomed 81,224 customer visits

while providing community access to local food in a safer shopping environment. Many customers told us our market was the only place they felt safe going outside their home. Even though it wasn’t a typical shopping experience, it provided a much-needed sense of normalcy and routine. Although we couldn’t do all the fun activities like Story Time and Chef Demos, the Napa Farmers Market still served as a community hub for people to connect with their neighbors and the people that make their food. For our farmers, the Napa Farmers Market remaining open for business without interruption was a crucial lifeline for their small, family-owned farms. Our market served as the home for 37 local and California farms in 2020. In addition to farmers, we supported 71 small business vendors, including 56 Napa County based businesses. Ariella

Wolkowicz launched her bagel business, Toasted, in 2016 at the Napa Farmers Market. “I am forever grateful to the Napa Farmers Market for doing whatever they could to allow vendors to operate during COVID,” says Ariella, “As always, the market has provided a space for small businesses to reach the community and provide a source of socialization, learning and connection.”

FIGHTING LOCAL FOOD INSECURITY

A key component of the Napa Farmers Market’s mission is to address local food insecurity through food assistance and nutrition incentive programs. The numerous economic challenges of 2020 caused a sharp increase in program utilization with nearly 400 lowincome Napa County families receiving a record breaking $65,115 in food assistance dollars. Eight years ago, with $500, the Napa Farmers July 2021

39

Market started offering CalFresh Market Match, which doubles the value of CalFresh (“food stamp”) benefits to purchase fruits and vegetables. Since 2012, we have provided $122,656 in Market Match dollars to lowincome households. Beyond increasing tight food budgets, CalFresh customer and mom of three, Diana G. says, “Market Match helps me feel good about what I’m feeding my kids. When we shop at the Napa Farmers Market, we feel like we’re a part of our community and my kids know where their food comes from.” In May 2020, the Napa Farmers Market formed a new partnership with Puertas Abiertas Community Resource Center to create the Fruit and Veggie Bucks program to distribute $27,800 donated by Alfredo Pedroza. As a trusted organization, Puertas Abiertas CRC identified Latinx families in need of additional food assistance. Eligible families received $100 of Fruit and Veggie Bucks vouchers to buy produce at the Napa Farmers Market for up to three visits. An additional benefit of the program is the increased sales to Latinx family-owned farms: $20,495 (74%) of Fruit and Veggie Bucks vouchers were spent with five Latinxowned farms between June 2020 through February 2021. To keep the program going, we jointly applied for and were awarded $20,000 from the 2021-2022 Napa County Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement. We are continuing to seek an additional $40,000 from community partners to fully fund our expanded Fruits and Veggie Bucks program. In addition to food assistance dollars, the Napa Farmers Market is a major source of fresh produce donations in our valley. Last year 33,649 pounds of fruits and vegetables were donated by our farmers and delivered primarily to the Napa Valley Food Bank, but also other organizations providing local food assistance like NEWS Domestic Violence and Sexual Abuse Services. The Farmers Market to Food Bank program collection and distribution would not be possible without the dedicated support of Napa Valley CanDo and Feeding It Forward Napa Valley.

BECOME A FRIEND OF THE MARKET

With a return to normal life on the horizon, the Napa Farmers Market is launching a new fundraising program

to support our activities: Friends of the Market. As a nonprofit organization, we rely on community support to help us fulfill our mission of providing equitable local food access and educational programs. Funds raised will empower us to offer an enriched customer experience and enhanced education activities, as well as maintain the existing food assistance and nutrition incentive programs that help to feed hundreds of our neighbors. The Friends of the Market campaign launched June 1 and will run through July 31, 2021. Friends who give $100 or more will receive an exclusive Friend of the Market canvas shopping bag as a special thank you gift!

YES. You Can Grow Indoor Plants

F

Flower buds and tender sprouts tell us spring is here. You’ve got the itch to grow something green, but your backyard is dinky, or it’s shrouded in shade. Wait…won’t indoor plants bring your home alive?

“A lot of it

is trial and error,” he explains. “If a plant isn’t thriving, try different conditions of light and

watering.”

Yes—unless you have a purple thumb, kill every plant you’ve ever brought home or put them on a shelf and forgot about them until they wilted and disintegrated (true story). Marketplace Magazine consulted several indoor plant specialists, and you might be surprised by the secrets to success they divulged. “Most failing plants I see are the victims of ‘over loving,’” says Alyssa Piombo, owner of Riza Plants in Napa. “By that, I mean overwatering and not enough light. The roots drown or rot. Air flow is important so the plants can breathe.” Plants need light to grow through photosynthesis and most indoor plants are native to tropical climates. According to the UC Master Gardeners of Napa, “In their natural habitat, they typically live under a canopy of taller vegetation, receiving plenty of indirect bright light but no full sun. In our homes, however, walls and roofs diminish the amount of light and create dark corners with little bright light.” Alyssa has seen a huge interest around indoor plants in the past year. “Being in our homes July 2021

during the COVID crisis has provided the perfect opportunity for people to beautify their space by making it green and lush. It’s also been a good time to take up home gardening as a hobby. Plants are at an all-time high.” David Shubin, a nursery professional at Van Winden’s Garden Center in Napa, agrees. “Absolutely, there’s been increased interest. I’m constantly impressed with how fast the

plants in our greenhouse are sold and have to be replenished.” “There’s a broad difference in tastes for indoor plants,” he says. “People have different likes. Some just want a plant that’s pretty. Others want healthy air in their homes. Still others want an art piece.” What kind of plant does he consider an “art piece?”

“There’s a huge interest in a plant called variegated monstera. It is difficult to find. We can order it, but we can’t always guarantee that our suppliers will have it.” The variegated monstera have creamy white spots on their dark green leaves and can grow quite large. The plants are pricey, too. Full grown plants can run around $2,000; cuttings for propagation are about $400. Perhaps unsurprisingly, they require a

particular amount of light and temperature every day and are finicky about correct watering. Alyssa says the trendiest plant in her store right now is the fiddle leaf fig tree. “It’s extremely popular but people should understand that they’re also extremely temperamental about their light and water,” she says. “In magazines they photograph the fiddle leaf in dark corners of rooms. Realistically, they will not

do well in those conditions.” “When buyers come in, they see my beautiful 10’ tall fiddle leaf fig that I’ve had for four years. I call it Notorious F.I.G. It gets good watering and the best light. Some people just don’t like high maintenance.” Both experts agree that the purchaser must learn about their individual plants and the time to find out is before buying.

“If your plant is going to succeed,” says David, “you have to ask a lot of questions in the greenhouse or at the checkout stand. We also ask a lot of questions about the buyer’s lifestyle to find a good match.” The professional gardeners laugh when asked if they’ve ever killed a plant. “It’s all about experience; I’ve killed so many in my life,” says Alyssa. “But it’s not a failure if you learn something from it.” David admits some of his plants have died. He suggests experimenting with your indoor plants to see where and what they like best. “A lot of it is trial and error,” he explains. “If a plant isn’t thriving, try different conditions of light and watering.” What if you already have a plant that no longer seems robust? In spring, consider new soil and fertilizer. “I want to emphasize that right now is a good time for repotting existing plants,” Alyssa says. “Most plants should be repotted every 12 to 18 months during the growing season. The plant roots get restricted in too-small pots and they need soil replenishing. Every plant has different soil requirements.” Riza Plants has a soil bar with different soils so that the correct soils can be hand mixed for the best results. Van Winden’s stocks several different types of soil for every plant need. Both offer repotting services. Fertilizer should also be added during the growing season, roughly spring through early fall.

David Shubin from Van Winden's.

“People forget that the plant is a living thing,” says David. “Living things need to eat. Be careful if using a chemical fertilizer. It’s easy to burn your plant. We suggest organic products. For instance, you can use fish emulsion all you want, and it won’t hurt. Both types of fertilizers have their place, but I usually recommend organic.”

Okay, you say, I understand plants need the right light and watering schedule, feeding and repotting. Are there plants that are easier to grow than others? Experts Robert and Alyssa say it’s the ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia). It has waxy, smooth leaves and is a good air purifier. “The ZZ plant is drought tolerant and forgiving,” says Alyssa. “It’s also fine in low light.” Other beginner plants include Golden Pothos (Epipremnum aureum); String of Turtles (Peperomia prostrata), calathea varieties, such as the Snake Plant; and many succulents. The most important thing to know is that different plants have different needs—but there’s a plant for everybody. Yes, even you.
