Strasburg Emporium offers wide selection for gift shopping By Melissa Topey The Northern Virginia Daily

STRASBURG - The Strasburg Emporium makes Christmas shopping easy with its more than 90 vendors and a million items for sale within the 55,000square-foot building. “Anything you want we have it,” said Ron Andrews, a manager at the Strasburg Emporium. Furniture, rugs, quilts, statuary, tools, home decor items, framed art, unique jellies and jams, and more are on display with items for all price points. Robert B. Hundley, of Fieldale, Virginia, stopped in Strasburg Emporium on his way home from a trip to Pennsylvania to see the leaves change color. It was not his first time in the shop. “Normally when I go north I stop in,” Hundley said. “It’s a nice shop.” He found a couple of Christmas gifts, a juicer for his wife and a license plate that reads “I love my dog” for his daughter’s golf cart. Don’t wait ‘til spring to get gifts for gardeners By Max Thornberry The Northern Virginia Daily TOMS BROOK - Now that potted plants are inside and the earth is starting to freeze, the gardeners in families are getting antsy to get their hands back in the dirt. Although winter weather isn’t conducive to work in the garden, a bevy of gifts to prepare gardeners for spring is at their fingertips. Lynne Phillips, the owner of Natural Art Garden Center, said she stays busy year-round, even when the time isn’t ripe for putting anything in the ground. Gift certificates are always a popular item, Phillips said, because they are as good as cash and never expire. Sitting on a certificate now can help gardeners spring right out of the gate when the sun comes back. “Some people may want to give someone a tree,” Phillips said, “but they don’t want to get it until the spring.” Holidays are a busy time for Phillips as she prepares Christmas wreaths to ship all around the country. Work off the holiday feasts at Devil’s backbone fitness By Max Thornberry The Northern Virginia Daily Giving the gift of fitness this holiday season can help jump-start those New Year’s resolutions. Holiday meals, time off from work and visiting family can create a sluggish start to the new year but gyms such as Devil’s Backbone Fitness in Strasburg have a solution and the deals to help keep the momentum moving all year long.

Backbone guides small classes through workouts every day, shaping each workout to fit the needs of each member, all without paying extra for a personal trainer. “You don’t have to add on to your package. You don’t pay anything extra if you want a private coach,” she said. “That’s all part of your membership with our gym and the type of fitness we offer.”

While gift certificates and free trials are available year-round, starting on Black Friday, Esterly said she is throwing in a bonus month for anyone who buys two months’ worth of classes. That deal is good for anyone who walks through the door, cash in hand, or for someone who has a gift certificate they want to re“One of the misconceptions is you have deem for two months. to be fit - ‘I have to be fit to go into that type of fitness,’” Esterly said. “No, Devil’s Backbone Fitness offers three we are where you want to start.” levels of membership, all with the same Unlike other gyms, Esterly said Devil’s access but with different levels of comBackbone is an all-inclusive space that mitment. trades unlimited access to unlimited Month-to-month memberships don’t classes and resources. Tammy Esterly, the owner of Devil’s Backbone, said she started doing CrossFit six years ago. She said she wasn’t sure if she was fit enough to start and doesn’t want anyone to have that same fear when they begin their fitness journey.

Building a community within the gym is what helps most people create a habit of working out. Knowing that the gym buddy lifting weights and running next to you every day is going to notice if you aren’t there for a month is a motivator to keep going when the going gets tough, she said. Walking into a gym can be a scary experience, Esterly said, because most people who want to get in shape haven’t ever been taught what the machines are for or how to use them. Rather than letting newcomers flounder and slip through the cracks, Devil’s

“Anybody who might want to gift themselves the gift of fitness over the holidays; if they’re not sure what we offer and what makes us a different structure than other gyms. Henry recommends that parents might want to look at the wooden playsets at the store, like a wooden cake mixer and a wooden tea set where even the tea bags are made of wood. “It is a pretty imaginative way to play,” Henry said.

The studio does offer kids activities, such as painting a story in which kids participate in an activity that is tied into a story that is being read. Also popular are pet portraits. One young girl has already painted four images as gifts, Solivay said. She said people can send in an image of a pet and the studio will prepare the canvas with the image and have it ready for the person to paint. The studio also offers gift cards in any amount, she said. Suzanne’s Studio is located at 130 W Court St., Woodstock. Facebook page: www.suzannes-studio.net

“Because honoring our veterans is so important, we’re working with our local [Veterans of Foreign Wars post] to arrange an honor guard, hopefully, a guest speaker for some short remarks, and special music, as well as refreshments on hand in hopes that our local veterans will join us to be honored,” Freakley said.

Freakley said the “tradition” of the event is what brings people back each year. “We have some very loyal runners, walkers and volunteers who have been with us since the very beginning,” she said. People may still sign up to participate in the Turkey Trot. The cost to register in the 10K will be $30, while registration for the 5K and the Teeny K will cost $30 and $10 respectively. Record-breaking harness racing season ends Harness racing at Shenandoah Downs in Woodstock ended in mid-October with a winning season. Darrell Wood, the director of communications of the Virginia Equine Alliance, said this season was the best year yet from both an audience and participant standpoint. He said that $148,147 was wagered on races this year, a record for Shenandoah Downs and a 24.4% increase over last year’s amount of $119,099.

Wood said the good weather in September and October also helped keep attendance numbers up. “On two of the days, we had some rain prior to the first race but I don’t think it actually rained while racing took place at all during the season,” he said.
