Vale la pena volver entonces, al ejemplo con el comenzó este texto: la imagen que cambia de soporte de la pantalla de un computador al papel, gracias a la mediación de una impresora, adquiere vida propia. Es el caso del retrato de Esteban Peña que es fotocopiado una y otra vez, una imagen que va adquiriendo su propia materialidad más allá del contacto inicial con su productor, a medida que se disemina por varios soportes. Siguiendo la línea de pensamiento de Mitchell, una metáfora muy productiva que él construye para entender esta aproximación a la imagen es compararla con un virus, una forma de vida que depende de la cultura humana como el ambiente en donde se reproduce y evoluciona. En este orden de ideas, la vida de las imágenes viene a ser diferente a la de un picture —o un objeto artístico. Mientras que el objeto es valorado por la unicidad como signo indéxico que se va cargando por su propia historia, en el caso de la imagen “liberada” de su autor y sometida a los avatares de la máquina, adquiere importancia gracias a su vitalidad.
It is worth returning, then, to the example with which this text began: the image that shifts from the support of the computer screen to that of paper and, thanks to the mediation of a printer, acquires its own life. This is the case for Esteban Peña’s portrait as it is photocopied again and again; it becomes an image that acquires its own materiality beyond an initial contact with its producer as it is disseminated through various media. Following the line of thought proposed by Mitchell, a very productive metaphor for understanding this approach to the image is that of the virus, a life form that depends on human culture and the environment in which it is reproduced and evolves. In this order of ideas, the life of an image is different from that of a picture or an artistic object. While an object is valued for its uniqueness as an indexical sign that is charged by its own history, in the case of the image ‘released’ by its author and submitted to the avatars of the machine, it acquires importance thanks to its vitality.
