It is hard to believe this year has passed so quickly. I have thoroughly enjoyed serving as president of our North Texas Home Builders Association. New officers have been nominated and will be officially installed in October. The time I spent as the Association President has been a year STAN MOUNTAIN of opportunities. Thanks to a lot of hard President work from our builder members and associate members, our 60th Annual Parade of Homes was a great success. Also, we were once again able to give scholarships to deserving college bound students. I am confident that the upcoming golf tournament will be a success as well as lots of fun. Being able to attend the Texas Association of builders Board meeting has been a great experience. These opportunities have given me a new perspective on the importance of being a member of a local home builders association. When you become a member of a local association you also become a member of the state association and the national association. This not only allows you to network locally and across the great state of Texas but the entire United States. What a privilege and honor it is to be a member of an organization that takes such an active part in giving back to the community. It is also an honor to tell people you are a member of the Texas Association of Builders (TAB). TAB is the official voice of the home building industry in Texas. This recognized and respected trade association represents 315,000 million jobs and $21 billion of Texas economy. TAB plays a major role in the legislative, regulatory, and public arenas. TAB’s mission is dedicated to creating a positive business environment for the housing industry by addressing the housing issues of the people of Texas. Working with its 30 local associations, TAB enhances your ability to provide jobs and housing for Texas families. You can be proud you are doing your part. It has been a pleasure representing the North Texas Home Builders Association and its members. Thank you all for your continued support and let’s look forward to another great year!

Garage Doors is Topic at August Luncheon of the North Texas Builders Association The latest trends in garage doors was the topic at the August membership luncheon of the North Texas Home Builders Association held Thursday, Aug. 2, at the Kemp Center for the Arts. Ron Heidt of Spring, Texas, director of builder sales for Overhead Door Corporation, said installing a high-quality garage door is the second most important way to increase the value of your home. He stressed that doors are available with 20-year to lifetime warranties. During the presentation, he discussed two new doors on the market. The Impression Collection is a panel door engineered with an artfully molded wood grain fiberglass surface concealing durable steel construction. It comes in a variety of architectural styles with three-section styling on seven-foot high doors and four-section styling on eight-foot high doors. It is available in 10 colors along with a choice of three types of windows and optional hardware. Heidt stressed that the Impression Collection is made with foamed-in-place polyurethane insulation with an R-value of 7.6 that helps control costly heat loss and heat gain. He added that this type of insulation can diminish street noise and makes the door quieter as it operates. “These doors also are designed with award-winning safety and technology features including pinch-resistant door panels and factory-installed powder-coated interior hardware that ensures proper alignment and smoother operation with a clean interior appearance. He added that the fiberglass exterior utilizes Therma-Tru Accu Grain technology providing the beauty of wood without the maintenance. Heidt also discussed the Modern Aluminum Collection of sleek, sophisticated garage doors. “The Modern Aluminum Collection door provides a unique look for today’s more contemporary-styled homes. It combines glass and aluminum for unparalleled visual appeal, strength and light infiltration. It is available in the 511 Series for door sizes up to 16-feet wide and the 521 Series for doors up to 26-feet wide. The 521 Series also offers a joint seal between sections for additional weather resistance. He added that the Modern Aluminum Collection offers an array of glass choices, including double strength, tempered, Low E, insulated, frosted, mirrored, reeded and tinted glass. Light-filtered glass also is available to add style while maintaining privacy. Additionally, Heidt said the Modern Aluminum Collection features 197 powder coat color options to best match the home. “Clear, anodized finish comes standard. We also have solid aluminum panels for a unique, distinctive look. Doors also can be anodized in light, medium, or dark bronze. For homes located in extreme wind conditions, Heidt said

you can safeguard your home with a wind load-rated system. This is available on the 521 Series and means your door can be built to withstand a variety of wind conditions, including hurricane-force winds, and meet all local building codes. The History of Labor Day In 1882, Matthew Maguire, a machinist, first proposed the holiday while serving as secretary of the CLU (Central Labor Union) of New York. Others argue that it was first proposed by Peter J. McGuire of the American Federation of Labor in May 1882, after witnessing the annual labor festival held in Toronto, Canada. Oregon was the first state to make it a holiday in 1887. By the time it became a federal holiday in 1894, thirty states officially celebrated Labor Day. Following the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the U.S. military and U.S. Marshals during the Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland reconciled with Reyes, leader of the labor movement. Fearing further conflict, legislation making Labor Day a national holiday was rushed through Congress unanimously and signed into law a mere six days after the end of the strike. The September date originally chosen by the CLU of New York and observed by many of the nation’s trade unions for the past several years was selected rather than the more widespread International Workers’ Day because Cleveland was concerned that observance of the latter would be associated with the nascent Communist, Syndicalist and Anarchist movements that, though distinct from one another, had rallied to commemorate the Haymarket Affair in International Workers’ Day. All U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and the territories have made it a statutory holiday. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
