Change of Command It was a bitter sweet ceremony, Board Director Cindy David and Executive Vice President Teri Gibson attended when the 363rd Training Squadron had their Change of Command. Lt. Colonel James Olson gave command of the 363rd Training Squadron over to Lt. Colonel Erik Marcov on Thursday, June 25, 2020.

Unlike past ceremonies, the event was limited to the number of attendees and the majority of the squadron had to attend virtually due to the COVID-19 protocol.

A beautiful invocation began the ceremony, given by Chaplain Haynes concluding with wishing both men the best on their new assignments. Afterwards Colonel Donahue proceeded with going down memory lane with the accomplishments of Lt. Colonel Olson during his duty at SAFB with the 363rd. There were many times Colonel Donahue referred to unselfish acts and delegation of power James portrayed, before awarding him with the Meritorious Service Medal. The Meritorious Service Medal (MSM) is a military award presented to members of the United States Armed Forces who distinguished themselves by outstanding meritorious achievement or service to the United States subsequent to January 16, 1969.

Although Lt. Colonel Olson and his family will certainly be missed, the NTHBA looks forward to beginning a new relationship and welcoming Lt. Colonel Erik Morcov and his family to SAFB.

NTHBA June Luncheon

The Vernon College and its importance to our community was

the topic for the June NTHBA luncheon. After 3 date changes, Vernon College President Dr. Dusty Johnson stuck with the North Texas Home Builders Association to be the guest speaker for the June 4, 2020 NTHBA general membership meeting.

This was the first meeting since March due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and the number of attendees were down. Although there was a small crowd, it was a great meeting at the Forum.

T.C. Sanders of FirstCapital Bank of Texas gave the invocation and members enjoyed their meal catered by Bistro Express. The meal consisted of marinated grilled chicken breast, braised sweet potatoes, roasted vegetables, salad, rolls and blueberry ricotta cake.

After President Barney Brock recognized the NTHBA Partners, member Kolter Lukert of Guarantee Title Company gave the announcements and then introduced Dr. Dusty Johnson. His impressive introduction included three degrees from Texas Tech University, Doctor of Education in Higher Education Administration, Masters of Education in Agriculture and Bachelors of Science in Agriculture. With his degrees, Dusty had worked at Cal Farley’s Boy’s Ranch northwest of Amarillo, Howard College in Big Spring, TX, Rich Mountain Community College in Mena, Arkansas, Ozarka College in Melbourne, Arkansas and completed 11 years with Vernon College in March of 2020. He was born and raised in Shamrock, TX and has worked and served in the education field for 40 years. 2 years at the high school level and 38 years at the community college level. He has 8 years of classroom teaching and 32 years of college administrator education. His first job at the community college was as Rodeo Coach/Agriculture Instructor. Dusty firmly believes the community college exists to provide opportunities for people to improve their lives and it is important to continuously learn and improve your personal leadership style. Dusty’s wife’s name is Susie and together they have 4 children ranging in age from 29 – 37 and all of them are nearly grown and weaned.

Dr. Johnson started his program by mentioning how good it was to finally be able to meet with people amid the COVID-19 Pandemic that has had business as usual shut down for the past months. He mentioned unprecedented times we are living in and continued on saying he had looked up the meaning and the meaning says freakish times. This is certainly true.

Dusty told everyone, Vernon College was significant in our community. The college grows the future workforce for the community as well as employees 230 full time workers. Vernon College serves 12 Counties and 35 High Schools with dual credit courses. It has 3 campuses with the largest being here in Wichita Falls at the Century City Plaza.

Vernon College helps students who want a career soon after graduating with the 17 Technical Education Certification classes offered. An individual can have a certification in as little as 12 months and have a career. Many students choose to begin their higher education at Vernon College because it is less expensive and they may not be ready for a large college campus. Students can get some of their basic courses completed and then transfer their credits to a larger institution and begin specific classes geared toward the scholastic degree. Vernon College is the largest feed of transferring students to MSU. Vernon College helps students financially through assistance programs. In the 2018-2019 season, Vernon College students received $13,581,080 in financial assistance. This assistance allows Vernon College to encourage under privileged and under employed people to receive the education needed to pursue a career or a different career path depending the circumstances.

Vernon College has 4 revenue sources with student tuition accounting for 58.70%, state funding 25.10%, Wilbarger County Tax Revenue 12.59% and other income 3.61%.

Insert picture #7 here. With these freakish times, Vernon could face a decrease in student enrollment. Vernon College is currently working on getting Wichita Falls to allow the college to receive revenue from the Wichita County tax base. First as steering committee was appointed to do a feasibility study. Then the county commissioners had to approve it to be put on the ballot, which was approved October 2019. The next step is to agree on putting it on a ballot then it goes to a general election. If the tax was to pass, it would mean less tuition cost for students, bigger opportunity for high school students to receive dual credits, allow the College to implement more construction programs and make the technical programs, such as the electrical and plumbing, better.

In closing, Dr. Johnson said he is always appreciative to be asked to speak for local groups and have the community support Vernon College.
