On behalf of the cast, crew, and directors, I would like to welcome you to North Raleigh Christian Academy’s Squire Theatre and our 2024-2025 Season of Story! We are delighted to share our fall musical INTO THE WOODS with you, our audience. Thank you for your support of the student artists who have worked tirelessly to bring this production to life. Squire Theatre is proud of our dedication to excellence, and we look forward to continuing to bring you theatre that surpasses your expectations.
There is much Scriptural truth to be mined in INTO THE WOODS, and there are landmines to be avoided as well. One of the reasons I love this musical so much is Sondheim’s ability to humanize fairy tale characters. These characters we think we know so well are suddenly faced with challenging decisions and the consequences that follow. We see several characters “follow their heart” only to be victims of their bad choices. The Scriptures are clear that the human heart is dangerous: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9, ESV) If we seek only to follow the desires of our hearts, we will find ourselves quickly sinking in a quagmire of sin. As human beings, we struggle with the depth of our sin. We often forget to see that others carry the image of God upon them and so, like the characters in this musical, we repeatedly use others as a means to our own end.
Our only hope lies in the redemptive nature of Jesus and his life, death, and resurrection. Realistically, we will always struggle with the pattern of sin engrained in us even after placing our faith in Jesus. Despite whatever sin plagues you, there is life to be found in Jesus and the power of sanctification through the Holy Spirit. I pray that INTO THE WOODS will cause you to take a moment and evaluate how your heart might be leading you. Are you tempted as the characters of this musical are to only see others as a way of filling up your own heart or are you willing to consider the redemption found in Jesus and surrender your heart to Him?
Thank you again for coming, and we hope you enjoy the show. Please join us again this spring as we present a beautiful and often hilarious production of HELLO, DOLLY! You won’t want to miss the second performance of our Season of Story.
Enjoy,

In this Rooted Rhythms Podcast episode, I explore this question with one of the greatest storytellers I know, NRCA’s Fine Arts Director, Zachary Roberts. He shares the beauty of blending art and faith through theatre, encouraging us to recognize the stories in our lives and view them through Scriptural truths
AP Art students dedicated their talents to preparing the backdrop for the Into the Woods production. This project gave them the chance to showcase their skills beyond the classroom, using their creativity in new ways. Through their contributions, students brought glory to God through their artistic gifts and engaged in a meaningful collaboration that enriched their learning experience.
