MARTI WILL
Voluit ywer laat diep spoor

Internationally renowned artist Nkoali Nawa is, once again, making waves in the local art scene.
One of his works, Mothers (2014), has been incorporated in the Spier Collection and will feature in the exhibition to be curated by Andrea Lewis at the Isiko South African National Gallery (SANG) The exhibition is titled “Motherhood: Paradox and Duality” The exhibition opened on 30 April and runs through to 23 February 2026 Never one to have idle hands,
Letters
Nawa is currently working on a piece entitled Hard-Working Men His last big show was in London, United Kingdom (UK), where he was part of the 154 Art Fair which was made possible by the Spier Arts Trust in partnership with Nando's Based in Welkom, Nawa regularly travels to Cape Town and Johannesburg In 2024, he progressed from his signature charcoal on Fabriano board, to oil on canvas Nawa says he decided to diversify to oils as a commercial medium, while he builds up stock for a major solo charcoal and Fabriano exhibition He told Vista he was excited about his new adventure into
oil painting, but told the publication in 2024 he still had to find his niche
His works are inspired by people who strive to put food on their tables daily, by selling different soft goods on the streets and door to door Nawa once told Vista he is a survivor
“I work locally, but I think internationally” He has travelled the world to showcase his artwork and his works are hung in galleries all across the globe
He is currently working on a series of works that include titles like Women, Making ends meet, and Crates, all oil on canvas
Exploitation an ever-present feeling
Dillo Mohapelwa,Matjhabeng:
I thought that the Matjhabeng Location Municipality is for the people, only to realise that it is not because its authority is elected by the members of the ANC political party, not by the Matjhabeng residents
Secondly, residents of Matjhabeng do not participate in the decision-making process For example, the municipality authority unilaterally allowed the foreigners they cannot account for, to flock to Matjhabeng
As if it was not enough, this municipality allowed unemployed South Africans from all walks of life to converge in Matjhabeng where there are no jobs, thereby creating problems for the municipality and residents
In addition to this, the authority unilaterally decided that those citizens who are employed must pay for the services of the unemployed, including the foreigners who cannot be accounted for Is this fair?
To my surprise the different organisations of the society such as the lawyer’s association, the religious leaders, the different political parties, and others say nothing about this
malpractice
The people who are adversely affected by this illegal practice are the whites who are hated, ostracised and discriminated against by the members of the ANC party alongside the government employee pensioners (GEPs), on whom the municipality prey This municipality exploits the vulnerable GEPs in that they are denied rebates and indigent status, thereby contravening the provisions of section 9(3) and (4) of the Constitution of South Africa
What the local municipality does is disgraceful, inhumane and is the direct opposite of what the caring organisations such as the garage workshops and the insurance companies do
For instance, all the garages give pensioners a discount when they service their cars
On the other hand, car insurance companies do not charge pensioners co-payment for fixing up their vehicles subsequent to accidents In contrast, the Matjhabeng government denies GEPs the benefits that are enjoyed by other pensioners
Not so very long ago, the municipality served only the
suburban residents with the fictitious account amounting up to more than R500 000 –pensioners included This is indicative that the authority of Matjhabeng is not in touch with reality
The municipality ignores the fact that a person who went on pension in 2003 has no money for paying off whatever they claim he or she owes The bank will never give that person a loan since the person is over 80 years old
Now the question arises: When is the Matjhabeng Local Municipality going to recover the money that has been lost through BEE and the money that is alleged to have been banked at the VBS Mutual Bank, which was reportedly looted by known politicians who are still enjoying an expensive lifestyle?
How much longer is the municipality going to be persecuting and harassing the poor pensioners by phoning and sending SMS messages to them, despite the fact that the pensioners tell them that they do not have money?
By phoning them, where does the municipality hope the money will come from since the pensioners do not work?

Following allegations of rape in Thabong, members of the Welkom Public Order Policing (POP) arrested a 34-year-old suspect
On Sunday, 22 June, the police received information on the suspect’s whereabouts
“The information was operationalised, which led them to a house in New Stands, Thabong On arrival, members found a man loitering in the yard When asked about the where-
abouts of the alleged suspect, he informed the police that the wanted person was not around While searching around the yard, the police found a woman hiding in the outside toilet and informed members that the suspect had gone out

The Bronville police are investigating a case of stolen property after two 9mm pistols and ammunition were recovered in an open field near this suburb
On 18 June, two members of the Bronville Crime Prevention team were busy conducting a vehicle checkpoint (VCP) at the Erfdeel Road-Masimong T-junction, when their attention was drawn to a maroon Toyota Etios that had offloaded an African male He was carrying a black backpack on a bridge The individual then proceeded to walk towards the nearby mine
The police stopped and searched the vehicle and the four occupants inside, but found nothing amiss
The police officials then pursued the individual who had been dropped off
“As the patrol vehicle approached, the suspect threw his black backpack into long grass in an open field and fled on foot,” says Sgt Mahlomola Kareli, spokesperson for the Free State police They searched the area and recovered the discarded bag, which contained two 9mm pistols, ten 9mm rounds of ammunition and two magazines Both firearms had their serial numbers filed off

MISDEEDS INVESTIGATED
Several individuals were arrested during joint operations executed by members of the multi-disciplinary operation Vala uMgodi in and around Theunissen in the Lejweleputswa district
The operations focused on addressing the possession of illegal contraband, trespassing, and immigration offenses
On 19 June two women were arrested for trespassing, and one man was apprehended for contravention of the Immigration Act In a significant breakthrough, another man was arrested after an illegal firearm, suspected gold-bearing material, dagga, and components of a South African National Defence Force (SANDF) uniform were discovered in his locker at the Vierfontein mine
In a separate incident on 18 June, the Vala uMgodie reaction team, in collaboration with mine security discovered a hole on the mine premises Upon scaling down into the hole, officers found packaged and sealed food, along with explosive detonators No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing
The Vala uMgodi operation, aimed at combating illegal mining activities and associated crimes, took place outside of Theunissen on 18 June
“The team discovered a large resting or sleeping place utilised by illegal miners Two males found at the location were arrested and food and items associated with illegal mining activities were seized,” says Sgt Mahlomola Kareli, police spokesperson for the Free State
Onn 17 June the team had arrested three men aged 45 and 32 years, after they were found in possession of gold-bearing material in the mine premises in the area
These operations emphasise the commitment to ensuring the safety and security of mining communities, and protecting national resources Further investigations are underway in all these cases, and more arrests are not ruled out,” says Kareli

‘Trash’ can inspire
When Cecelia Mutsi walks the streets of Virginia in Matjhabeng collecting used Tetra Pak cartons, she does not just see waste, but food for her children, school fees, and a future built on dignity In just one year, the collection rate for post-consumer Liquid Board Packaging (LBP), the cartons used for milk, juice, and other beverages, has surged from 8% to 26% – a threefold increase
Behind this growth is a strategy driven by Tetra Pak Southern Africa, its producer responsibility organisation Petco, and a network of partners including Mpact and Gayatri Paper Mills
Mutsi sells her cartons to a local buy-back centre, one of 205 now actively collecting LBP across the country She is not working in isolation, but within a structured system that connects informal collectors to large-scale recyclers Mutsi runs Camte Recycling, a buy-back centre empowering women waste pickers When she first started, few saw value in cartons But after Tetra Pak and Petco’s intervention including bulk bag distribution and awareness campaigns, her centre collected 2,148kg in a single October 2024 drive
“Now, even schoolchildren bring cartons from home People finally understand this isn’t trash, it’s income,” said Mutsi
