THE Uitenhage High School community came together recently to honour the memory of 14-year-old Shemeeque Gia Davis, a Grade 8 pupil who tragically took her own life, leaving the school in what officials described as "unfamiliar territory "

The school created a dedicated space in its foyer for students, staff, and visitors to pay tribute to Davis, who had been enrolled at the institution for only a few months before her untimely death

A well-attended memorial service was held at the Uitenhage Congregational Church, where school officials, local dignitaries, and fellow pupils gathered to remember the young student Mark Williams, Principal of Hoërskool Uitenhage High, addressed the gathering with a poignant message about child protection

"We are grateful for the support for the passing of our learner who had been with us for only a couple of months," Williams said during the

service "So much more needs to be done to protect our children, and to guide them to become the leaders they ought to be in future A combined effort is needed to set a good example, and to protect them from evil "

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality's Speaker of Council, Councillor Eugene Johnson, attended the memorial service and offered words of comfort to the grieving family, school, and community

"Shemeeque Davis' passing has left many questions in our hearts Life, as we know, is like a mighty seaunpredictable, often stormy, and at times filled with sorrow," Johnson said "In moments like these, we are reminded that we may not always understand why things happen, but we are called to hold on to faith "

Speaking on behalf of the Executive Mayor, Johnson added, "This tragedy is a very sad loss, so we're here to support and also motivate the teachers and fellow learners, especially because of the manner in which she died "

The school's rugby team paid a

moving tribute during their match against Humansdorp Secondary School, carrying a poster of Davis across the field as they entered

Following Davis's funeral, which was held on May 24, the school's Representative Council of Learners (RCL) organised a special assembly to mark Mental Health Awareness Month, an initiative that took on added significance in the light of recent events

The assembly began with a rendition of the song "Everybody Hurts," serving as a reminder that no one is alone in their struggles The programme, directed by RCL Vice-President, Tristan-Lee Hill, featured posters created by council members to raise awareness visually

Linathi Niyki, President of the RCL, spoke about the importance of discussing mental health openly and seeking help when needed Fellow RCL members Shanley Smith and Lerayll Connon emphasised the need to prioritise mental and emotional wellbeing alongside physical health

Edwardo Rank, RCL Treasurer,

The memory of 14-year-old

a dignified ceremony recently

delivered a powerful message about valuing mental health in everyday life, whilst a poem titled "Uitenhage Ontwaak," written by Josephine Steyn, was recited by educator, Elton Dennis, who had led the assembly

In a statement following the events, the school expressed gratitude to all who had offered support during this difficult period

"We extend our heartfelt thanks to all individuals, schools, and institutions who have reached out with their condolences and support Your kindness and compassion mean so much to us during this difficult time," the statement read

The school also specifically thanked Davis's family for allowing the school community the opportunity to honour and remember her in what they described as "a meaningful and respectful way "

As the school continued to process this profound loss, they concluded their Mental Health Awareness Month activities with a quote from psychologist Noam Shpancer, "Mental health is not a destination, but a process It's about how you drive, not where you're going "

The school pledged to continue fostering "a culture of empathy, understanding, and wellness, not just in May, but every month of the year," as they navigated the challenging aftermath of losing one of their own

Compliancedeadlineapproachesfortraditionalinitiationseason

THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality's Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Health has urged parents, circumcision practitioners, and traditional leaders to ensure all compliance requirements are completed in time for the upcoming initiation season

The initiation season will begin on June 14 for out-of-school boys and on June 27 for in-school boys

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, in partnership with the Provincial Department of Cooper-

ative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) and the Nelson Mandela Bay Traditional Initiation Forum, has launched awareness programmes throughout the Metro These initiatives aim to guide affected families and practitioners through the required compliance procedures

Medical screenings will be available from:

June 1 for out-of-school boys

June 27 for in-school boys

MMC Buyeye emphasised, "To ensure a safe initiation season, planning and compliance are essential

"All necessary registrations must be completed no circumcision will be allowed without full compliance in Nelson Mandela Bay "

He said Nelson Mandela Bay prides itself on being one of the safest areas in relation to the initiates' safety

"Working with parents and all stakeholders, we would like to continue maintaining our status of be-

ing one of the safest areas and communities to practise this important custom in our culture It is for this reason that we warn everyone to be compliant with the law," said MMC Buyeye

Medical screening is mandatory before initiation to ensure fitness

Parents/guardians must give consent, and boys must give informed consent in compliance with the law

The law also empowers health inspectors and traditional councils to monitor initiation schools, wherein

Uitenhage-hospitaalselandingstrookweeropstandaard

unregistered or unsafe initiation practices are regarded as criminal offences

FOLLOWING four weeks of work

done at Plant Kariega to upgrade its production facilities, Volkswagen Group Africa has embarked on the next phase of its preparations for the third model it will build from 2027

Plans to add this model, an A0 SUV Entry vehicle, to the production line in Kariega alongside the Polo and Polo Vivo, were announced at the VW Indaba media event in February this year At this point, about 60% of the preparation work in Production had already been completed during the December 2024 shutdown

From April 14 to May 12, the plant halted production to com-

plete the remaining 40% of the required installations and upgrades in the Body Shop, Paint Shop, and Final Assembly areas

This work included finalising all installations completed in Body Shop, station modifications and the programming of robots in Paint Shop, and modifying conveyors in Final Assembly, among other tasks

With this work completed and production returning to normal, the A0 SUV Entry project is now in its commissioning phase This entails a systematic process of bringing the new equipment online and performing necessary checks to ensure these are functioning optimally This is being

done over weekends in order to prevent any disruption to Plant Kariega’s production over three shifts

The A0 SUV Entry project is an exciting one for Plant Kariega, as VWGA is working closely with colleagues in Volkswagen do Brasil to develop, build and launch this model

“We are happy to be back to normal production, with the knowledge that we are one step closer to our future of building three models in our plant,” said VWGA Production Director, Ulrich Schwabe “I would like to thank every employee who has played a part in the process of preparing for this future icon in our Volkswagen lineup, and I look forward to working with these colleagues, as well as our Brazilian counterparts, as we continue on this

Lions Club clean up a success in Despatch

SHANTI JAFTA

THE Uitenhage Lions Club recently embarked on a project to assist in cleaning up the Despatch area

The project co-ordinator, René Van Zyl, said that the idea originated from her desire to improve the environment "I thought that people would participate more readily if an incentive is provided and Trash to Treasure was born "

The project encouraged resi-

dents from the Reservoir Hills area to bring bags filled with trash to the Despatch Primary School where they could be exchanged for different items "We had donated items ranging from food, toys, stationery, clothing and household items," Van Zyl said She added, "The majority of these were donated by private individuals and businesses from the Despatch area " Lions Club President Tanja

Erasmus is full of praise for the overwhelming support received for this project

Erasmus said, "The principal and staff of Despatch Primary were completely behind the idea and went out of their way to assist We also found amazing support from local businesses OK Minimark Protea, Despatch Superspar, Handy House, La Rochelle, and New Era Leaflet Distribution

“The trash collected was re-

moved for recycling by Noziqhamo Recycling Our deepest gratitude goes to all of them and the private individuals too numerous to mention " Van Zyl said, "We were completely blown away by the response from the community A total of 916 filled garbage bags were contributed by 463 people This could have been higher, but we ran out of treasure! It means that almost a ton of trash was removed from the neighbourhood

by the residents " Van Zyl believes that the success of the inaugural Trash to Treasure project has encouraged the Lions to conduct similar projects on a regular basis "We will help to clean up one trash bag at a time," said Van Zyl

VOLUNTEERS from prominent Eastern Cape humanitarian organisations received specialised training last week to help them tackle pressing social issues in one of South Africa's most troubled regions

In a recent ceremony, members of the Kariega-based Red Cross and Partners in Sexual Health were awarded certificates at the Church of Scientology's new Gqeberha facility after completing the comprehensive Scientology Volunteer Ministers' 19 Tools for Life Courses

The Eastern Cape currently faces daunting socioeconomic challenges, with Statistics South Africa's 2023/24 data revealing a staggering 45% youth unemployment rate - the highest in the country Gqeberha itself has recorded the nation's highest crime rates for theft, kidnappings, rape, and murder, according to recent South African Police Service reports

"These are the veins of society; without them, we have no community," said Sabelo Bless, Director of Public Affairs for the Church of

Scientology of the Eastern Cape

"These training sessions are essential because we're creating everyday superheroes With these tools, we can rebuild our sector the way we want it to be "

Against this backdrop, the newly trained volunteers sought practical solutions to overcome challenges in communication and conflict resolution that frequently arise in their humanitarian work

The courses focus on equipping participants with skills to navigate both personal and professional difficulties

One participant shared a powerful testimonial: "I had a short and

violent temper, living in a home with someone abusive to me and my children This training taught me how to handle such situationsit's like emotional intelligence " The Community Development training seminar addressed critical issues, including strained human relations that often escalate minor disputes into major conflicts For volunteers who provide free assistance during crises like floods and looting, these skills prove invaluable

Founded on the philosophy of Scientology founder, L Ron Hubbard, the Volunteer Ministers programme operates in 120 countries worldwide

The Church of Scientology of the Eastern Cape hopes that by strengthening the capabilities of local volunteers, it can foster meaningful change despite the province's significant challenges "When properly equipped with practical knowledge, even a small group of dedicated individuals can make a remarkable difference in their communities," Bless added "That's precisely what we're witnessing today "

NKOSAZANA NGWADLA

BROOKLYN Prince, a former Deputy Head Girl at Uitenhage High School, has made her international modelling debut at a prestigious fashion show in Istanbul, Turkey, marking a significant milestone in her burgeoning career

Prince, who discovered her passion for modelling at the young age of six, described her international debut as "a dream " "The moment I stepped off the plane and on to the soils of Turkey, I was so overwhelmed with emotions It was like I was one step closer to soaring high My first show was spectacular and I felt as beautiful as ever," Prince said Her journey into the modelling world began with a humble pageant at VGK Church during their annual Bazaar Her mother helped her practise walking with grace and style in their backyard – an experience that sparked a lifelong passion for the catwalk

However, it wasn't until the age of 16 that Prince actively pursued modelling again, when she participated in and won the title of Miss Valentine at Uitenhage High School This achievement led to her discovery of Sophisticate Models, a modelling school that became what she called her "training grounds for a

confident model "

During her final year at Uitenhage High School, Prince served as Deputy Head Girl, a position that allowed her to exemplify the values she wished to instil in her peers

"Before the election even took place, I was aware of the example I would want to be for my fellow learners – that is the chance taker I won the title of Miss Valentine only because I made the decision to try," she explained "I wanted to stress the importance of taking chances in life as it leads to a path of courage and prosperity, even if it takes a few losses "

Prince credited her success to the unwavering support of her family and the guidance of teachers who recognised her potential

"If not for them approving and investing in my dream, I would have struggled even more to get to where I am today," Prince acknowledged

Following her successful debut in Istanbul, Prince revealed ambitious plans for her international career She will be travelling to multiple countries for various modelling assignments, ranging from commercial to high fashion and beauty contracts

"Each contract in every country I am signed in – Turkey, Greece, Germany, Sweden, China, with more countries loading – have their own terms, and I'm super excited to share my journey with my hometown and everyone who is cheering me on," she said

Despite the challenges of working in diverse cultural environments, Prince noted that adapting to different cultures and norms hasn't been particularly difficult for her, attributing this adaptability to her South African heritage

"I am blessed to be from a rainbow nation," she remarked, referring to South Africa's multicultural character

Since news of her international breakthrough spread, Prince has received an outpouring of support from her community She maintains close ties with the Sophisticate Models family and expressed gratitude for the encouragement she continues to receive from home

Looking towards the future, Prince aims to inspire young people in her community and beyond "My goal is to empower my fellow youth Anything is possible when you take the chance and trust in God," she said "Modelling is my dream career, and I plan to pursue it to the greatest heights "

Despite her global ambitions, Prince emphasised her commitment to her roots "South Africa is definitely a home no matter what, and I will always come back home even during the busiest of seasons," she affirmed

To those aspiring to follow in her footsteps, whether in modelling or other pursuits, Prince offered words of encouragement, referencing Uitenhage High School’s motto that has guided her journey: Perseverando Vincimus, which means "those who persevere shall overcome "

SOUTH African singer Bella Velapi, performing professionally as Belato, is preparing to take the stage at the Mandela Bay Jazz Legacy Festival 2025 this weekend, showcasing her distinctive blend of jazz, Afro-pop, reggae, and amapiano that has earned her recognition both locally and internationally

Born in Kariega into a musical family, Belato's journey began in church before evolving through various musical collaborations

Her early career saw her developing her craft with bands such as Soul Fusion and Blaze Jazz Band, experiences that laid the foundation for what would become a successful solo career

The year 2012 marked a significant milestone for Belato with the release of her debut EP featuring the tracks Walkaway, Ukulunga, and Judem

The project received substantial airplay on regional radio stations, with one of her singles reaching the number one position on Bay FM's charts This early success signalled the emergence of a powerful new voice in the South African music scene

Throughout her career, Belato has demonstrated remarkable versatility and a willingness to collaborate across musical boundaries She has shared performance stages with some of South Africa's most celebrated musicians, including Zonke, Thandiswa Mazwai, Sibongile Khumalo, Mafikizolo, Stimela, Mango Groove, and Cama-Gwini

These performances alongside established icons have helped solidify her position within the country's rich musical landscape

Belato's artistic reach extends beyond South African borders, with international collaborations featuring prominently in her portfolio Her work with American producer Yakheem, Jamaican artist Iqula, and South African house music producer Heavy-K demonstrates her ability to traverse diverse sonic territories whilst maintaining her distinctive vocal identity

In 2023, after a period of artistic development, Belato released the amapiano single Mna Lo, produced by gospel legend Sizwe Zako The track represented a new direction for the artist, embracing contemporary South African sounds whilst retaining the soulful essence that first en-

deared her to audiences This release showcased her adaptability and growth as an artist willing to explore new musical territories

Currently, Belato serves as one of the featured vocalists in the South African Jazz Orchestra (SANJO) at the Mandela Bay Theatre Complex This prestigious position allows her to contribute to preserving and evolving the country's jazz heritage while adding her bold sound to the legacy of South African jazz

The Mandela Bay Jazz Legacy Festival has established itself as one of the country's premier jazz gatherings, attracting both established performers and emerging talents from across the African continent and beyond The festival, which celebrates South Africa's rich jazz tradition, provides a platform for artists to showcase their talents and connect with audiences passionate about the genre

For Belato, performing at the festival represents a homecom-

ing of sorts, allowing her to share her music with the community that has supported her throughout her career The event will take place on Saturday, May 31, 2025 at the Mandela Bay Theatre Complex (PE Opera House) Main Stage, where Belato will join other celebrated musicians for an evening of exceptional musical performances

The festival s organisers have described this year's lineup as particularly special, featuring artists who represent both traditional jazz influences and contemporary interpretations that push the boundaries of the genre Belato's inclusion in the programme reflects her standing within South Africa's music industry and her contribution to the country's evolving musical identity
