De Grendel Lions visit Bothasig crèche for Mandela Day project
The De Grendel Lions Club recently contributed more than 67 minutes when they assisted Sunshine Corner Playschool and Daycare Crèche in Bothasig to enhance the playing area for the children by painting the boundary wall facing the play area
After consulting with the crèche staff, it was decided to paint the wall in bright colours to attract the attention of the children, with the result that playing outside more would be a great experience for them
As part of Mandela Month celebrations members of the De Grendel Lions arrived on site on Mandela Day 18 June, armed to the teeth with paint, paint rollers, brushes and anything else needed to paint the wall, and also trim a few intruding bushes and a tree
The Lions were not alone in their endeavours as they received assistance from other partners based in the
community as well Gary Conradie, representing Bothasig Neighbourhood Watch, also spent much more than 67 minutes assisting the Lions
Later the afternoon staff from Tax A Sured, a company based in Monte Vista, popped in to assist, and ended up staying longer than intended as they assisted in completing painting the whole wall
Lions Club president Glenda Hon thanked the members of the Lions Club for their participation
She mentioned that the assistance of the Bothasig Neighbourhood Watch and Tax A Sured was greatly appreciated, as it contributed in finishing the wall in one day
“The greatest vote of thanks however came from the children in the crèche who during the whole day monitored the progress and kept the compliments flowing,” says Jacques Mostert on behalf of the Lions Club organisation

The City of Cape Town last week welcomed the re-arrest on Friday of a taxi driver accused of murdering traffic officer Walton van Rooyen more than five years ago
The accused, Craig de Lilly, first appeared in the Cape Town Magistrates' Court on 21 July on charges of murder and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition
Van Rooyen (49) was shot and killed in his patrol car on 17 March 2020 after arresting the taxi driver for a traffic violation
"The City’s Safety and Security Investigations Unit (SSIU) investigated the case alongside police detectives and the suspect was arrested," said JP Smith, Mayco member for safety and security "However, a month later the case was provisionally withdrawn "
This arrest, he says brings new hope to the family
"I can only imagine the family is as happy as I am that justice will be served I went to meet the officer’s family at the time and they were devastated by his senseless murder The release of the suspect was a bitter experience knowing his alleged killer may get away with no consequence "

Mandela Day should be every day
It was truly heartwarming to read about how so many people were inspired to reach out to the less fortunate on Mandela Day
I sat with my heart blazing imagining the smiles that must have lit so many faces
But it didn't last
Why is this overflow of ubuntu reserved for only one day a year?
Why can't we love our neighbours more steadfastly throughout the year?
Why do we need a special day to make giving a habit?
If dedicating a day is truly all that is needed to motivate people then why not dedicate more days?
Like Valentines Day Instead of making it a day of romantic love why not make it a day of loving our neighbours?
Why not add an element of giving to every major day? On Heritage Day, donate some of your braai or on April Fool's Day, donate some of your cheer On youth day, do something good for youth
The more significant days I think about the more I realise that all of them have theme that is open to interpretation in charitable ways but they've become mostly about politics
Maybe it's time that started adding charity to our mindsets, starting with celebrations on significant days Maybe then we'll turn the tide of poverty in our country

The article "Sapoa fights tariffs" (TygerBurger 23 July) refers I am a property owner and resident in Bothasig I herewith join Sapoa, challenging thee property-linked tariffs recently introduced by the City of Cape Town in its 2025-26 budget
These include a new cleaning levy and fixed charges for water and sanitation services, all calculated based on the value of a property rather than actual usage I wish to state categorically that my property is for my housing needs not speculative purposes The whole notion of rates based on value of property at market prices is placed and is a gross violation of my human rights to property
