RICHMOND Hill’s residents have taken to the streets as volunteers to paint faded road markings
And as a bonus, they are getting to know their neighbours better, according to Richmond Hill Special Rates Area (RHSRA) office manager, Sharon Pretorius
With residents having been invited to select their own intersections, with most choosing the ones nearest to their homes, Stanley Street and the part of Irvine Street outside the SRA office have been painted by the SRA team
This initiative, the OwnYourZoneRH campaign, aims to foster community pride, longterm sustainability and ongoing maintenance and beautification of Richmond Hill
“It is just one of a number of neighbourhood projects where residents have taken ownership of their streets by weeding the pavements, picking up litter and trimming trees in support of the SRA teams,” says Sharon Residents have also helped raise the levels of security by offering their properties as sites for the installation of 60 security cameras, linked to the Magnum control room and a 24-hour HRG patrol vehicle, through the fibre connection of the residents’ homes
“The suburb-wide CCTV security system is a first for Nelson Mandela Bay, and probably for the country, that we are aware of This is due to the unique way it operates with the SRA coordinating and funding the camera installations, security patrol and CCTV monitoring, while also giving camera hosts 24-hour access to their own cameras,” says camera project facilitator, John Bryce
“Given our limited funds, it could only have happened with the support of the community,” he adds
Artificial intelligence built into the cam-
eras and a system developed by Magnum identify and follow suspicious behaviour through the suburb and alert the patrollers in the HRG vehicle, who take appropriate action
“The system is still being refined, but crime levels are definitely down according to the police statistics for the Humewood precinct,” says Bryce
Another group of residents has taken responsibility for managing the “wild park” – plots of neglected municipal land bordering on Albany Road and behind the old fire station
“It was a haven for squatters and provided an easy escape route for muggers, as well as being a fire risk,” says Sharon
Over the years, successive groups of volunteers have cleared it of alien vegetation, cleaned up the creek and planted indigenous vegetation
While the Hillers are not hesitating to roll up their sleeves to improve their neighbourhood, HRG/SRA security patrollers make sure of their safety while on patrol in the area and local coffee shop, Groundfloor Café, supplies the volunteers with a much-needed caffeine fix
All in all, a well-functioning community is in motion, striving to develop an ongoing safe and welcoming environment and, in so doing, preserving the suburban elegance and historic charm of Richmond Hill This is a prime example of the Hillers’ civic pride and love for their neighbourhood that has and always will play a key role in the city’s cultural and architectural heritage
Over the next few months, the Richmond Hill SRA plans several additional projects to make the suburb even safer, cleaner and more attractive Watch this space and their social media posts to stay in the loop at the Richmond Hill Port Elizabeth Facebook page and their website, wwwrhsra co za

CHEF Siphamandla Shawn Manqunyana’s culinary career is on the up-and-up
The 32-year-old Gqeberha resident was a winner last year of a Capsicum Culinary Studio (CCS) bursary, one of 21 which the school gave away as part of its 21st anniversary celebrations
Manqunyana so impressed those at CCS that he now works as an assistant chef at the Gqeberha campus, while at the same time completing his studies
And, as if that wasn’t enough, he also continues to run his own successful catering company, which is called SphasCookOut
Manqunyana’s love of and interest in food and cooking started at a young age
“I was around my grandmother a lot She was a woman who loved cooking because she found it relaxing and therapeutic She would often tell me that the kitchen was her happy place Seeing her so elated gave me a keen interest in cooking, and I loved the idea of mixing different ingredients together to make a delicious meal,” he says After matric, Manqunyana studied and qualified in travel and tourism and worked in the industry until Covid came along, lockdown followed, and he was made redundant
“What at first I thought was a disaster turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as it allowed me to embrace my cooking passion,” he says
“With nothing to lose and everything to gain, I took a leap and launched a catering company to fulfil my love of food and cooking I am completing Capsicum’s Foundational Cookery Programme and am now doing my practical training at Doppio Zero at the Boardwalk Mall
“It was always my dream to go back to school and harness my skills in the kitchen, as well as learn new ways of cooking delicious and nutritional meals for my family as well as clients and friends
“After graduation, I plan on using all that I’ll have learned to grow as a chef, food content creator and food stylist I would also like to use my skills and talent to take my business to the next level, and in five years’ time I hope to be running my own fully operational kitchen as well as fit in some overseas travel so I can experience different cuisines and continue to upskill myself ”
Manqunyana answered a few fun questions:
If you had to cook dinner for five famous people, who would they be and what would you make them?
Siba Mtongana, Jamie Oliver, Pete Goffe-Wood, Ollie Swart and Moses Moloi, all talented chefs in their own right
“I would prepare umleqwa (hardbody chicken) and ibhobola (maize porridge), both of which remind me of home

ISUZU Motors South Africa (IMSAf) has reinforced its commitment to the ISUZU global sustainability targets set out in Isuzu Motors Limited Environmental Vision 2050, a longterm strategy set out to address global environmental challenges
This vision seeks to contribute to a prosperous and sustainable society through low-carbon, resource-efficient and environmentally responsible manufacturing and business practices
The Environmental Vision 2050, developed by Isuzu Motors Limited, serves as the company’s blueprint for achieving net zero, zero landfill, elimination of environmental risks, and biodiversity conservation across its global operations by 2050 In South Africa, these global ambitions are being translated into measurable local impact through the ISUZU Group’s 2030 Environmental Roadmap
This roadmap translates the vision into clear goals which include a 50% reduction of CO2 emissions from operations, the introduction of a carbon-neutral vehicle line-up that
meets diverse needs, advancement in circular economy, strengthened environmental management and supplier engagement, as well as the promotion of native local biodiversity conservation
“As a proud subsidiary of Isuzu Motors Limited, we have fully embraced the bold aspirations set out in the Environmental Vision 2050
Our operations in South Africa are not only aligned with these global ambitions, but are actively driving measurable progress through local innovation, accountability and strong environmental governance,” says Celestin Ndhlovu, Executive Vice President for Corporate Services at Isuzu Motors South Africa
“We are deeply committed to en-
suring that our journey towards zero landfill, reduced emissions, and responsible resource use is both credible and impactful, not just for compliance, but for the legacy we leave behind ”
In addition, IMSAf has identified the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and working towards a net-zero as one of its key priorities
This is in line with our global strategy which seeks to mitigate the impact of Climate Change
Whilst achieving net zero is a huge challenge in South Africa, IMSAf is well on its way to making huge strides in achieving its 2030 objective through various optimisation initiatives
“The impact of Climate Change has long shifted from being purely an environmental concern, to being a business risk issue For this reason, we are working extremely hard in tracking our carbon footprint in order to craft a clear and purpose-driven mitigation plan,” Ndhlovu adds
As part of realising the ambitious goals, IMSAf has embarked on a determined path to maintain its zero
waste to landfill status, aligning with the 2050 target of advancing resource circulation and reducing the strain on local landfill sites
Through strict waste segregation processes, recycling and continuous staff engagement, IMSAf’s operations are minimising waste across all levels, from production to packaging and logistics
“Our path to zero landfill is both a corporate responsibility and a commitment to our communities,” Ndhlovu says
“This is about more than compliance it’s about leading by example in the transition to a more sustainable industrial economy ”
As part of the drive to eliminate environmental risks and reduce resource consumption, IMSAf has adopted a model of reusable container system for shipping and receiving automotive components
“This closed-loop logistics model drastically reduces reliance on single-use plastics and cardboard, cutting down on packaging waste and supporting circular economy principles”, Ndhlovu says

FACE of the Bay contestant, Rushana Ahmed, recently visited the Peter Gordon Learners with Special Education Needs (LSEN) Academy in Gelvandale to hand over a generous donation of reading books and educational materials
With a warm smile and a heart for community upliftment, Ahmed visited the newly opened school, which began its journey in January this year
The Peter Gordon LSEN Academy is dedicated to supporting children with special educational needs, offering them a safe and nurturing space to grow, learn and thrive
"I wanted to give these incredible kids resources that will help them unlock their full potential," said Ahmed
"This school is doing amazing work, and I'm just grateful to be able to support it in a small way "
The books and materials were welcomed with enthusiasm by both educators and learners, who are still in the
process of building their library and classrooms
Principal Mervin January said, "The Peter Gordon LSEN Academy would like to share our sincere gratitude with people like Rushana who go the extra mile to assist institutions like ours, even though she is not obligated to It shows us that there are still people in this world whose hearts are in the right place "
The visit is part of Ahmeds ongoing efforts to make a meaningful impact in the Northern Areas, using her platform as a Face of the Bay contestant to highlight causes close to her heart

ELEVEN schools are represented in the Eastern Province U/16 rugby squad, who are ready to produce a huge team effort at the Grant Khomo Week
The week starts on Monday at St Alban’s College in Pretoria and the final matches will be played on Friday July 4
Grey High dominates the EP group with 9 players, but ten other schools are also excited to see what their respective stars can produce against the other provinces
In recent years, there haven’t been many players of DF Malherbe putting the EP jumper on This motivates Lock, Jarno Nel, even more to give it his all in Pretoria
“I feel honoured to represent DF in the EP team The school is working hard with a positive vision for its rugby programme,” Nel said
He doesn’t see it as a drawback that he is not in one of the Gqeberha schools, which are known more for their rugby
“I believe any player who is serious about the sport and works hard can make the EP team – regardless of whether you’re at a bigger ‘rugby school’ or not,” he explained
Jarno hopes to inspire other players – not just at DF – to believe in themselves and realise what hard work and self-belief can achieve
“I was very surprised when I found out that I had been selected for EP Even though I worked really hard for it, the competition for places was tough,” Jarno added
Nel will be a key figure in the EP pack with his high work rate and mobility He is a factor in the rucks and securing possession in the lineouts
Jarno is always keen to carry the ball, especially near the try line with the pick-and-drive plays
It will be a huge challenge for the EP boys right from the start when they take on the South Western Districts in their first match
“We have a good team and will give our best to be competitive We will go into each match to win,” Nel promised
Although the focus is now on preparing with the EP squad and putting in the hours in the gym, Jarno is
Jarno
a member of DF’s first cricket team in the summer months
“I also enjoy fishing, playing golf and now and then running a 10km road race ”
His rugby role model is the legendary Springbok Pieter-Steph du Toit
Why? “He is hardworking and never gives up,” Jarno explained He could well have been describing himself!
This U/16 week is very close to the hearts of rugby fans in the province
It is named after Grant Khomo, who learned his rugby in the Eastern Cape Khomo captained the first African national team to victory over their coloured counterparts at the then Port Elizabeth Showgrounds in 1950

IT is all systems go for the Vulumzi High Mandela Day 5km Fun Run that will take place in front of the school's main gate on Saturday, July 19, in commemoration of the Mandela Day 67-minute initiative
Vulumzi High headmaster, Mzimkhulu Fina, stated that his school's fun run, named after the world's icon, was entering its fifth year
Fina said, "The fun run was started in 2019, but the outbreak of COVID-19 put it on hold in 2020 and 2021 as the country was under lockdown regulations The motive behind hosting the event was to raise funds for a school hall and computer laboratory
"We have noticed that this event has grown by leaps and bounds since 2019 We have managed to get our makeshift hall and a computer laboratory because of the Vulumzi High Mandela Day 5km Fun Run/ Walk fundraising EnviroServ Suez Canal plays an important role in helping our run get going "
EnviroServ Suez Canal community liaison officer Zingisa Mabangula said that their company would keep on supporting Vulumzi High in their endeavour to run the fun run because of its outcomes
Mabangula said, "At EnviroServ
Suez Canal, we have discovered that Vulumzi High produces the best academic results and that is consistent We plough back into the community by associating with this community school " Fina reported that the participants would be entertained by Taebo Group and some netball and soccer games after the fun run, adding that there will be some fantastic prizes
for the winners and lucky draws after the race
Executive Chairperson of the Motherwell NU 5 Crime Prevention Sub-Forum, Kholisile Williams, highlighted that all the law enforcement agencies would render their services during the fun run
For more information, Fina can be contacted at 071 301 9411 during school hours
SOME of the best older racehorses in the province will take each other on in a Pinnacle Stakes on Friday
There is no feature race at Friday’s meeting planned for the Fairview Turf track in Greenbushes, but the R100 000 Pinnacle Stakes looks like a classy event
Check on the Facebook page Henk Se Wenk about a possible change of surface for the meeting
Rain is predicted over the coming two days which could make the Turf track unsuitable to race on The action will shift to the poly surface if that is the case
There will also be top sprinters in action in another Pinnacle Stakes, this one over 1000m, on the card of eight races After this meeting the last month of the current season will be packed with plenty of action and drama on the local and national front On the national scene all eyes
are on the R5 million Hollywoodbets Durban-July to be run at Greyville on July 5 Tomorrow the public will get a chance to see how the July runners are doing when the customary gallops take place at Greyville
Next month is going to be hectic at Fairview when six meetings – four on the poly and two on the turf - will be fitted in
Some of the East Cape titles and awards are all wrapped up, but there are still plenty to aim for in next month’s meeting Alan Greeff will be crowned as the champion trainer again but the big question is if he will make it a record season
He saddled a record 176 winners in 2019 Since the current season started last August, Greeff has visited the Fairview winners box 152 times
The maestro has seven meetings left and is 24 winners away from his own record mark It is going to be
close, and very exciting Greeff is followed by Gavin Smith (106) and Kelly Mitchley (46) Mitchley, who like Greeff saddled a double this past Friday, would love to get to 50 winners before the end of the season
Cape Town-based jockey Richard Fourie already rode a record 129 Fairview winners this season to secure his East Cape title There is also the title for the locally based jockeys and here is where a fierce battle is taking place
The leader in this is Eldin Webber with 15 wins, but he can’t do anything to improve his situation Webber is unfortunately out injured and the pack is closing in on him, led by Charles Ndlovu and Yuzae Ramzan (both on 12 winners) Sandile Khathi is just one behind them and also very much in the running in this nail-biting title race
teams were looking to win the trophy The competition was very tough, and I am very excited I was born and bred here in Motherwell, and I decided that I should plough back here at home " Tomorrow Stars' chairman, Vusumzi Scout, expressed his gratitude on behalf of his club to the teams that took part in his club's tournament Scout explained, "I am over the moon to see the teams give a good account of themselves The teams were disciplined, and the programme was not interrupted I would like to express our sincere gratitude to Terry Driving School for supporting us
The standard of the tournament was extremely high because of Myataza Our local organising committee, match officials and fans are worth mentioning " BVFC went home with R4 000, gold medals, a floating trophy and kit, while Red City settled for R2 000, bibs and cones
The winning junior teams went home with gold medals and a floating trophy each, while the runners-up received silver medals
Juniorteams’finalsresults:
U/13 finals: Camper United 4-3 Shining Stars (on penalties)
