Miltsiekte in NK aangemeld

HELENA BARNARD

Die doeltre endste beskerming teen miltsiekte by diere is tydige inenting.

Applications dismissed

The Northern Cape High Court has dismissed urgent applications by two suspended Northern Cape Cricket (NCC) executives seeking to halt their disciplinary hearings, ruling that the matter falls outside the court’s jurisdiction and must be heard by the Labour Court.

Judge Danie Olivier on 24 October struck down applications by Thapelo January, NCC’s suspended chief executive, and Mbulelo Bosman, a suspended employee and former director. Both sought to prevent disciplinary proceedings against them, pending the outcome of their CCMA cases challenging their suspensions. Both represented themselves in court.

The ruling represents the latest chapter in a protracted legal battle that has engulfed the NCC since February, when Cricket South Africa (CSA) exercised step-in rights to dissolve NCC’s board of directors and appoint administrator Jesse Chellan to take control of the provincial body.

The conflict traces back to 30 October 2021, when irregularities at NCC’s annual general meeting (AGM) triggered a chain of events. Ferdinand David Bitterbosch, president of the Pixley ka Seme region, brought an application seeking declarations of delinquency against five NCC directors, including January and

Bosman. For the AGM, Frances Baard Cricket Association sent five delegates who each voted individually, directly contravening the Memorandum of Incorporation (MoI), which stipulated that each associate member could send only one representative.

This irregularity led to the election of Gibson Molale as president and other respondents as directors despite their ineligibility.

On 21 February, acting deputy Judge President Mpho Catherine Mamosebo delivered a scathing judgement declaring all five directors delinquent under the Companies Act, finding systematic dysfunction involving gross negligence, wilful misconduct, and breach of trust.

Despite January’s director term expiring in December 2022, he remained listed on the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) and was appointed CEO on 1 January 2023, despite not meeting minimum requirements including a business degree and ten years’ business experience.

A forensic investigation by Mazars revealed egregious financial misconduct.

January approved payment of R553 723 to Creative Solutions for services allegedly never rendered, whilst Bokamoso Trading received R175 596 for work allegedly already performed by other suppliers. The Mazars report concluded that January allegedly “deliberately authorised fraudulent payments”.

Bosman, as finance committee chairman, failed to produce financial

statements from April 2022 onwards, violating requirements for maintaining proper accounting records.

Against this backdrop, CSA invoked its MoI on 12 February, dissolving NCC’s board and appointing Chellan as administrator. On 13 May, NCC suspended January and Bosman based on preliminary audit findings pending full forensic investigations, which have since been completed.

Both received notice of their disciplinary hearings on 16 September January’s for 15 and 16 October, and Bosman’s for 13 and 14 October. Both waited until 7 October to launch ultra-urgent applications, giving respondents only three days to respond.

When the hearings proceeded in mid-October, both failed to appear, claiming sudden medical incapacity. Both submitted medical certificates on the very morning their hearings were scheduled, with remarakbly similar patterns.

However, both engaged in extensive email correspondence, filing detailed objections, challenging the chairpersons’ authority, claiming violations of medical confidentiality under Popia and the Constitution, and threatening legal action.

With their High Court bid defeated, January and Bosman must now face their disciplinary hearings, rescheduled for 28 and 29 October.

DRIE STERF TOE HELIKOPTER VAL

HELENA BARNARD

Choir seeks singers

Province’s first youth choir seeks singers

For the first time youth and young adult voices will be heard through the establishing of the Northern Cape Youth Choir.

This new initiative by the Northern Cape Symphony Orchestra (NCSO) continues to shape the province’s musical landscape by creating new platforms for musicians - platforms that simply do not exist in the region.

Through the Northern Cape Youth Choir, the Northern Cape will have a recognised youth choir, which will be a space where young voices can unite, grow, and shine together in harmony.

Not only will this lead to a recognised youth choir in the province, but will also fill a gap especially for the many high schools who do not have a choir.

For this purpose, male and female singers

aged 15 to 25 years are invited to audition to be part of this first ever Northern Cape Youth Choir.

To do this, record a short video of yourself singing “Happy Birthday”.

Send the video via WhatsApp on 076 353 7793.

More information on the choir can also be obtained by sending a WhatsApp message to this number.

Successful candidates will be invited for an in person audition.

Send your video on or before Friday, 21 November.

“This is your chance to be part of history and to help build something truly special for the next generation of Northern Cape musicians.

“Let your voice be heard. Let your story be sung,” the NCSO invites.

SPU bids chancellor farewell

The recent Sol Plaatje Memorial Weekend at the Sol Plaatje University (SPU) honoured the author, intellectual and activist after whom the university was named - Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje.

Plaatje was known to stand for dignity, justice and understanding.

This year's memorial weekend, on 10 and 11 October, carried special significance as SPU bid farewell to its inaugural chancellor, Justice Steven Majiedt.

Justice Majiedt has served the university with distinction since 2016.

The coming together of these two moments - reflection on Plaatje’s legacy and gratitude for Justice Majiedt’s leadership - created a weekend deeply rooted in the values that define SPU’s identity: service, intellect, humility and transformation.

SPU’s chief operating officer, Dr David Kanguwe, described Plaatje as “a writer, translator, journalist, political activist and believer in education and dialogue.”

He noted that Justice Majiedt embodies those same ideals of justice, equality and intellectual rigour.

Kanguwe said that both men remind us that “the pursuit of justice remains both a personal calling and a collective responsibility.”

In his lecture, Justice Majiedt reflected on the transformative power of education and drew profound parallels between his judicial journey and Plaatje’s life of service.

“We as judges must remain

Memorial service on Saturday

The memorial service for Dorothy-Anne Howitson will be held on Saturday 1 November at 11:00 at the Dutch Reformed Church Newton in Black Street in Kimberley. The service will be live-streamed, with the link to be shared closer later. Howitson, a pioneer and activist for the rights of persons with disabilities, passed away on 20 October, two days before her 70th birthday. She contracted polio as a child, and was also a fighter working towards eradicating polio through polio vaccines. “As a polio survivor, I cannot bear to think that anyone should get this preventable virus, which changes your life forever,” Howitson used to say. She was dependent on a wheelchair, and a few years ago she was diagnosed with post-polio syndrome. Her life is described as a testament to the power of resilience, compassion, and unwavering commitment to social justice and she served with distinction on numerous structures. humble servants of the people, like Sol Plaatje.

“We live in a country with serious challenges, and yet I remain optimistic because there are millions with that same selfless spirit.

“When we dispense justice, we must do so equally, to the rich and the poor, the mighty and the meek, the powerful and the voiceless.”

Justice Majiedt also urged alumni to “pursue education that uplifts and transforms communities,” mirroring Plaatje’s life of selfless service.

Special guest speaker, Lynn Forbes, mother of the late Hip-Hop artist AKA, shared words of encouragement with personal lessons from her own journey and her family’s long line of educators.

She reminded alumni that

teachers wear many hats, mentors, guides and changemakers, and encouraged them to always leave a lasting impact in the classroom.

Through passion, empathy and purpose, she said, educators shape futures and continue the legacy of transformation that Plaatje envisioned.

The memorial weekend was a living tribute to a vision that continues to shape SPU’s identity and impact.

Through the lecture, farewell dinner, golf day and alumni homecoming, the university carried forward its commitment to reflection that enlightens, leadership that serves and knowledge that transforms.

In carrying forward the legacy of Sol Plaatje, SPU remains a living light of hope, justice and humanity.

Twyfelhoekie

So, eendag, toe stop sy net.

Toe besluit sy – goed, ek hoor hulle. Dan maak ek soos hulle sê.

Elkeen het uitdagings

KARIN MULLER

“I have to be alone very often. I'd be quite happy if I spent from Saturday night until Monday morning alone in my apartment. at's how I refuel.” - Audrey Hepburn

Te veel, veel meer as in die 80’s toe dié liedjie “When I come home at night, I bolt the door real tight” een van my gunstelinge was. Eintlik steeds is.

Goue Oues wys hul vernuf

Acacia 1 was vierde, en Stillerweë 2 vyfde.

geheue, redenasie of ander denkvaardighede verband hou.

Jazz meets good food here

An evening of jazz and fine food, set in the unique surroundings of the McGregor Museum in Kimberley, has been planned for Friday 7 November. Whilst the jazz band of the Kimberley Academy of Music (KAM) performs live from the museum’s verandah, guests can indulge in food from the harvest table menu, prepared by mother-and-daughter duo Gayle Kotzé and Cassi Warren, who run Slice of Nice at the museum. The menu includes cold meats, cheeses, breads, pâté, salad bowls, and something sweet, which guests can enjoy at tables set on the lawn. The event runs from 18:30 to 21:30. Tickets, which must be booked by Monday 3 November, cost R350 per person. Wines and cider will be available at a cash bar. For more information and to make bookings, call Warren on 082 839 7237.

Varswater-spesial-

Dié Noord-Kaapse gebiedskamp is ’n jaarlikse instelling.

Read-aloud programme boost reading

A new reading programme has been introduced in local primary schools to help over 45 Northern Cape foundation phase teachers to guide learners beyond just sounding out words, towards truly understanding what they read.

The programme provides teachers with training and classroom resources, while also encouraging regular collaboration with parents. By focusing on the practice of reading aloud, children are supported in developing both their reading skills and comprehension. By using the method of reading aloud, children are guided in building both reading skills and comprehension. Implemented in Xhosa, Afrikaans, and English, the programme is already reaching more than 5 000 learners across the communities of Galeshewe in Kimberley, and De Aar, with the first months focused on developing strong pre-reading skills.

A parent of a Gr.2 learner at Alpha Primary School in De Aar, expressed how valuable she has found this programme to be for both her child and herself.

“Back when I was at school, practicing reading was a challenge for me and my peers. I think if there had been more tools, like the hand puppets that we have been encouraged to use in our teaching, or extra reading classes available, it would have been much more fun for us, and when children have fun, they learn faster and better.”

With 81% of Gr.4 learners across South Africa unable to understand what they read (according to Progress in International Reading Literacy Study -Pirls - in 2021), it is imperitive to bring practical training on how to integrate reading aloud into classrooms.

Working in partnership with ITEC, the initiative is part of the broader literacy and numeracy programmes funded by Droogfontein Solar Power and De Aar Solar Power through their community development initiatives.

It is already running successfully in six community schools, reaching learners at Beacon Primary in Colville, Du

Toitspan Primary in Beaconsfield, and Zingisa Primary in Galeshewe; alongside Kareeville Primary School, Alpha Primary School and Zingisani Primary School in De Aar.

A key feature is the regular sharing of learners’ progress between parents and teachers. Using instant messaging, families send daily voice recordings of children reading aloud with their parents. This simple approach has fostered strong commitment and active involvement from both families and educators.

“Extensive research has indicated that reading aloud to children builds and supports their listening and speaking abilities and enhances their overall language development, which the schools participating in this programme shared as significant challenges across the foundation phase,” shared HarHO-

TOrisinah Theka, economic development manager at Droogfontein Solar and De Aar Solar Power, funders of the programme.

Schools have received support and resources to establish in-classroom mini-libraries, further encouraging reading as part of daily life.

“Children who are exposed to great stories gain the ability to think clearly, express themselves confidently, and read with understanding. This is the ultimate goal of the three-year programme - to equip learners in our communities with the solid foundation they need to succeed as they move into high school and beyond,” added Theka.

The programme, which launched mid-July, is particularly impactful as learners are assisted according to their individual abilities, with special attention given to those who struggle.

Runners promised a race to remember

After the phenomenal success of the 2025 Mimosa Mall Marathon, Bloemfontein’s biggest running celebration returns on Saturday 28 February.

This event wil be bigger, faster, and more unforgettable than ever before. The 2025 instalment, hosted in March, saw record-breaking participation, with double the number of entries compared to that of its debut year, 2023.

Thousands of runners took part from elite athletes chasing qualifying times to families lacing up for the 5km fun run. They filled the streets with energy, colour and community spirit, turning Bloemfontein into a festival of fitness and pride.

The event continues its proud partnership with the Louzanne Coetzee Foundation, raising funds to empower differently-abled athletes and promote inclusion through sport, a cause that lies at the very heart of this event.

With preparations well underway, the 2026 Mimosa Mall Marathon, hosted in association with Bloemfontein Striders, is set to deliver an even more elevated experience.

The marathon will once again be an official Comrades qualifier race and offer runners the chance to test their endurance on a fast, scenic and well-supported route through the city.

Runners and supporters can look forward to refreshed race-day experiences, lively activations, and a true celebration of Bloemfontein's commu-

nity spirit, all centred around the heartbeat of the city, Mimosa Mall.

“The response to this year’s marathon was beyond anything we imagined,” says Neelofar Issa, general manager of Mimosa Mall.

“Seeing the streets come alive with runners, families and supporters reminded us how powerful sport can be in uniting a community. The Mimosa Mall Marathon has truly become more than a race it’s a shared moment of pride for our city, culture and community, and we can’t wait to make 2026 even more extraordinary.”

Jeannine van Zyl, general manager of Novus Media Community News in the Free State and Northern Cape, has also expressed excitement about the 2026 event.

“It’s a privilege to be the media sponsor of the Mimosa Mall Marathon for the second consecutive year. There was such a wonderful atmosphere on race day this year, and we are sure there will be more runners that want to be part of the 2026 event.

“We look forward to seeing how the race grows, getting more and more of our readers involved and active. When we come together as a community in this way, we’re not only building health and fitness we’re also building overall wellbeing and a healthy mind. An event like this strengthens what connects our people: perseverance, togetherness, and having fun.”

This was announced on 17 October when the Frances Baard Rugby Region celebrated a landmark year across men’s, women’s, and youth rugby. The 2025 awards highlighted a rising tide of talent, teamwork, and community support that sets the stage for even bigger ambitions in 2026. Showing the region’s robust development, the U21 squad secured consecutive championships, signaling a bright future for the region’s next generation of stars. They also secured back-to-back victories in the Griquas Regional Tournament, reinforcing Frances Baard’s dominance on youth level.

The female team of the Frances Baard Rugby Region delivered fearless play, tactical maturity, and depth that bodes well for future campaigns.

Frances Baard became the first region from the SARU Women’s Gold Cup circuit to advance a women’s team from Sol Plaatje University (SPU) to the Griquas regional scene, marking a historic milestone in the alliance between higher education and regional rugby.
