Inwoners vat hande met Groen Kathu

Organisasie bring

1

Vandaar ignoreer hy my.

“Die kursusgeld was R15 000, maar ons eis ook die vervoerkoste wat my dogter bestee het. Die bedrag moet, volgens my, R17 000 wees.”

‘Not mismanagement’

The South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) claims the provincial Department of Education ignores their requests to solve problems such as the non-delivery of learning and teaching support materials, lack of maintenance, non-functioning food schemes, and money for schools to pay electricity accounts.

For this reason, the union held a protest in front of the office of the premier of the Northern Cape, Dr Zamani Saul.

This protest on Monday, 27 January, in Kimberley comes as the DA also, in a statement last week, accused the department of the mismanagement of funds

Sadtu’s provincial secretary, Palesa Nqumashe, said their concerns are falling on deaf ears, affecting learners who do not have basic supplies like books and pens. She criticised the budget cuts, which compromise quality public education.

Nqumashe noted that more than 32 schools in the Northern Cape have no electricity supply. The department has only paid 27% of the allocation meant for schools, and they should have paid 100% last year.

The department and Treasury need to prioritise education genuinely.

The DA provincial spokesperson on Education, Priscilla Isaacs, echoed these concerns, pointing to the Department of Education’s financial mismanagement and poor prioritisation. She mentioned that schools received only 35% of their hostel subsidies, leading to operational challenges. Isaacs

highlighted that some schools struggle to pay municipal accounts and provide basic necessities like water and electricity.

She criticised the department for wasting over R647 million on irregular, fruitless, and wasteful expenditure in the last financial year.

Snapshot to identify challenges

In response, Geoffrey van der Merwe, spokesperson for the Northern Cape Department of Education, acknowledged the problems but attributed them to budget cuts rather than mismanagement.

He stated the department absorbed significant budget reductions and secured a portion of the funds to address immediate needs. The department ensured 100% delivery of textbooks to schools that opted to procure it centrally.

“Any suggestions that we squandered money unnecessarily are devoid of any truth. The department has always been regularly subjected to oversight by the Legislature Portfolio Committee on Education, where we transparently account fully on spending patterns and challenges.

“Through our engagements and the support of the Office of the Premier and the Provincial Treasury, we have secured a portion of the funds, which was paid to all schools. It was used to procure stationery, additional learning and support material, services to schools, learning aid for special schools, and hostel subsidies.

“However, additional funds are required to pay the outstanding allocations to schools.

“The department is processing the payments presently to schools in

terms of the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) to enable schools to provide a nutritious meal to learners for the rest of the first quarter.”

According to Van der Merwe, the department is concluding a ten-day snapshot survey to identify shortcomings and challenges at schools.

“This survey will guide us to immediately intervene on matters affecting learning and teaching.”

Van der Merwe explained that the department is conducting a survey to identify shortcomings and challenges at schools, which will guide their immediate interventions to improve learning and teaching conditions.

He also mentioned that the department and the Northern Cape provincial government endured the budget cuts instead of retrenching over 600 educators. The department will continue to work with the Provincial Treasury and the Office of the Premier to resolve fiscal challenges.

Sadtu and the South African Teacher’s Union (SAOU) have decided to embark on a Work to Rule action from Monday.

This action will limit district support to schools and prohibit educators from undertaking any extracurricular work.

The department expects these unions to be more understanding of the fiscal challenges before embarking on this action.

The department remains committed to working with government bodies to address budgetary concerns and improve the education system in the Northern Cape, Van der Merwe said.

Kaptein se vreugdes: Vlieg, slangvang

HELENA BARNARD

In dieselfde jaar stig die Herlear Primary School af as ’n Engelse skool. Sedert 1957 staan dit as Dutoitspan Laerskool bekend.

Avoid falling victim to payment scam in Kby

Fraudsters are posing as officials of the Sol Plaatje Municipality, threatening residents with disconnections and demanding payments via mobile apps such as CashSend, eWallet, Instant Money and others, says Thabo Mothibi, municipal spokesperson. No official of the municipality is authorised to solicit cash payments and instruct that payments be made via mobile apps to an individual, emphasised Mothibi. Such officials are also not allowed to accept payments outside the designated paypoints, or receive payments into unauthorised bank accounts. Only pay at designated paypoints of the municipality, into the municipality’s official bank account, or use Easypay online at solplaatje.online. Dial 080-122-9010 with enquiries.

In die Adopt a Tree Save a Tree-projek is 30 bome deur ’n plaaslike maatskappy geskenk.

Toe daar in 2018 ’n nuwe groterwordende kraak in dié vallei opgemerk is, was daar paniek dat dié skeuring vinniger as ooit plaasvind.

Twyfelhoekie

Wyse

eeue daar was en weens hewige reën blootgelê is.

Vriende van amper vier dekades kuier onlangs by ons.

Ek lag kliphard toe hy vriendelik sê: So is dit.

So is dit.

Jesus.

Top learners get boost

Recognising the feat achieved by the Class of 2024, Kumba Iron Ore has contributed R1 million to the 20 top learners with the best academic results in the Northern Cape.

Each of the 20 students will receive R50 000 to use towards their tertiary studies.

“The role that education plays in the development of young people is key to unlocking their potential.

Seeing the Northern Cape matric pass rate climb from

75,8% in 2023 to 84,2% in 2024, is a testament to the dedication required to achieve academic excellence by the learners and the Department of Basic Education,” says Adriana Slambert, the Northern Cape Hub corporate affairs manager at Kumba Iron Ore.

“Through our various education initiatives in the form of incentives schemes, bursaries, professional in training programmes and infrastructure development,

we will continue to personify our purpose of reimagining mining to improve people’s lives,” she says.

In addition to the contribution made to the 20 learners through the Anglo American South Africa (AASA) Education Programme, Kumba Iron Ore has invested over R140 million to bolster education in its host communities over the last three years.

Trust verbeter toekoms

So sê Hannes Noëth, Solidariteit Helpende Hand se uitvoerende direkteur.

Cancer incidence in SA to double

Globally, cancer is a major and growing public health problem. In 2022, there were an estimated 20 million new cancer cases, with 9,7 million lives lost to cancer.

About one in five persons develop cancer in their lifetime, and for each person whom it affects, the experience will be different.

World Cancer Day is annually observed on 4 February, and this yearthe global theme is “United by Unique”.

It recognises that every experience with cancer is unique, and everyone has unique needs, perspectives, and a story to tell; yet, people touched by cancer are united in a shared ambition to see governments implement policies to improve cancer prevention, deliver health systems which treat patients with cancer effectively and successfully, resulting in more people surviving their cancer and leading long and healthier lives.

Elize Joubert, the CEO of CANSA, says the cancer incidence in South Africa is set to double by 2030.

Not only does cancer encompass over 200 disease types requiring specific treatments, but also each person’s life situation differs in terms of socio-economic background, values, and preferences.

To better address these differences, peoplecentred care is oriented around individuals

people-centre approach can lead to improved patient well-being, and higher quality care and increased trust in healthcare providers.

“In some cultures, cancer is still a taboo subject. Yet, talking about cancer openly raises awareness, improves outcomes, and can ultimately save lives.”

On World Cancer Day, CANSA invites individuals from all walks of life to share their personal cancer stories and experiences in writing, artwork or a video.

The campaign intends to showcase real stories with unique perspectives.

“No two experiences with cancer are the same. Whether you are a person living with cancer, a loved one, a caregiver, a medical practitioner, a supporter, or an advocate, you possess something important: A perspective that is unique to you.

“When you share your views, you bring valuable insight and humanity to the conversation.

Every cancer patient needs a friend

and communities instead of just the disease. It engages and empowers people to have a more active role in their own health.

‘KEEP DOG UNDER CONTROL’

A court case arguing the liability of a dog owner for damages, finalised in December 2024, raises several points to consider.

On the day of the attack, the victim arrived unannounced and uninvited to the property. The dog was not in its usual enclosure, and the victim was attacked, sustaining injuries.

Based on findings, the court ruled that no negligence could be attributed to the dog owner. Legal Aid South Africa lawyer Verity Smith advises dog owners to stay informed of municipal bylaws related to pet handling.

Smith says pet owners must protect themselves from legal action by ensuring their pets remain under control at all times, whether leashed or off-leash. Dogs must not be allowed to roam freely or disrupt others, as per the local municipality’s bylaws.

“Display a ‘Beware of the Dog’ sign as it protects against liability, acts as a deterrent and provides a warning”.

Dog owners can also protect themselves against civil claims for incidents on private property by declaring to anyone on their private property that their dog may act aggressively. Emphasise that the dog should not be provoked and no uninvited or unannounced person should enter.

Victims of dog attacks on private property who wish to launch a civil proceeding must establish who has full ownership of the animal; whether it is deemed domesticated or not; whether it acted against its nature; and whether permission, purpose and a legal right to be on the private property was granted to the victim.

PIXLEYKASEME DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY NOTICE SPECIAL COUNCILMEETING

NoticeisherebygivenintermsofSection19(b)of the Municipal Systems Act, Act 32 of 2000, of a Special Council Meeting of the Pixley ka Seme District Municipality, which will take place at 11:00 on Thursday 30 January 2025, in the Council Chamber of the Pixley ka Seme

Research has shown that, in addition to early cancer detection, treatment and care, a positive outlook and support from family and friends play an important role in a cancer survivor’s recovery.

Give your friend space, but offer to visit when he or she would like, and also consider the following:

) Make flexible plans that can easily be changed.

) Make plans for the future – this gives your friend something to look forward to.

) When you make a commitment to help, follow through and do not forget to do it.

) Shop for groceries and pick up prescriptions.

) Help with chores around the house, such as getting the mail, taking care of pets, cleaning, doing laundry, taking care of plants and flowers and taking out the garbage.

) Baby-sit children, take them to and from school and evening activities, and arrange for play dates.

) Give your friend a ride to an appointment or support group or take notes during a doctor’s appointment.

) Keep your friend company during a treatment session by sitting with him or her during a chemotherapy session.

) Take a scenic drive with your friend when he or she is too weak to take a stroll in the park.

) Be humorous and fun when appropriate and when needed.

) Allow for sadness – do not ignore uncomfortable topics or feelings.

) Respecting privacy is extremely important. It is essential to maintain confidentiality.

) Listen without always feeling that you have to respond, sometimes a caring listener is what the person needs most.

) Expect that the person with cancer will have good days and bad days, emotionally and physically.

) Keep your relationship as balanced as possible.

) Make time for a weekly check-in phone call. Let your friend know when you will be calling, but let him or her know that it is okay to not answer the phone.

) Try not to let you friend’s condition get in the way of your friendship. Treat him or her the same way you always have.

) Ask about interests, hobbies, and other topics not related to cancer – people going through treatment sometimes need a break from talking about cancer.

) If you are not sure how to help, ask. Avoid saying

) I know just how you feel.

) You need to talk.

) I know just what you should do.

) I feel helpless.

) I don’t know how you manage.

) I’m sure you’ll be fine.

) Unsolicited advice or to be judgemental.

) Don’t worry.

) How much time do the doctors give you?

) Let me know what I can do (instead, offer specific ways in which you can help and things you can provide, should they need to call on you).

Rather say

) I’m sorry this has happened to you.

) If you ever feel like talking, I am here to listen.

) What are you thinking of doing, and how can I help?

) I care about you.

Club salutes 55 yrs of trailblazer marathon

This year, athletes can join in the celebration of the 55th Diamond Marathon on 1 March.

The Kimberley Harriers Running Club, the first running club in the Northern Cape, hosted the first Diamond Marathon in 1970 to submit it as a qualifying race to the Comrades Marathon committee.

It is the second oldest marathon in South Africa.

Sarge Ball, George MacCallum and Jimmy Glover founded the club in 1969 to have the necessary club affiliation to allow them to run in the Comrades.

Ball’s son, Gregory, designed the club logo, and the same badge is still in use.

Glover and MacCallum passed away, and Ball celebrated his 91st birthday in 2024. Ball stopped running the Comrades in 1993, of which he completed 23, and became a gym instructor in

Scottburgh where he is still involved. In 1970, Ball won the first Diamond Marathon in 02:45:00. That year there were 12 entries. Kimberley Harriers has a longstanding commitment to nurturing local talent, and helping athletes –whether walkers, beginners or runners – to reach their full potential, fostering a sense of community around the sport. The club also hosts many charity events.

After 34 years, Gert Thys is still

the Diamond Marathon record holder.

Thys, known for his success on the international marathon circuit, used the club as one of his early platforms to showcase his talent. Kimberley Harriers is still growing and is proud of its membership of 180.

Its current chairperson, Sammy Louw, joined the club in 1978.

Louw finished 27 Comrades with one silver medal, four Bill Rowan’s, 21 bronze medals and one Vic

Clapham. He finished 29 Two Oceans Marathons with two silver medals.

Last year the club celebrated the completion of 30 Comrades by David Janse van Vuuren, deputy chairperson.

It was the first time in the club’s history that a member completed 30 Comrades Marathons.

) For more information on the 55th Diamond Marathon, dial 078953-6337 or 072-517-5898, or visit the club on Facebook.
