THE High Court of South Africa, Eastern Cape Division in Mthatha, has sentenced Someleze "Somie" Mazwi (24) to life imprisonment for the murder of the KwaBhaca (formerly known as Mount Frere) cab driver last week

Spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority, Luxolo Tyali, said in addition, “Mazwi received 10 years for each of the two counts of kidnapping, 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances, 20 years for attempted murder and eight years for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition ”

He added that the court ordered these

sentences to run concurrently with the life sentence

"The convictions stem from events that unfolded on July 9, 2023 On that day, the deceased cab driver and his associates responded to a request from a local hair salon operator, known to them, to transport two men to their homes in KwaBhaca The salon operator remained behind while the cab operators drove off with the passengers," said Tyali

He added that during this journey, the passengers instructed the driver to turn onto a gravel road When he refused, Mazwi shot the associate in the neck and forced the driver away from the steering

wheel

Mazwi and his accomplice then drove towards Qumbu Near the town, they pulled both victims out of the vehicle, shot them multiple times and left them for dead

"Miraculously, the associate survived despite his injuries He managed to find help and later informed the police about the salon operator's involvement He also positively identified Mazwi during the identification parade Before the case went to trial, both the salon operator and Mazwi's accomplice were mysteriously shot and killed

“During the trial, Mazwi denied knowing the salon operator or being present at

his salon on the day of the crime However, State Advocate Chumile Mkentane led compelling evidence, including eyewitness testimony from people who saw him being picked up by the cab, as well as evidence from investigators who revealed that Mazwi had arranged for the hijacked vehicle to be operated as his cab in KwaZulu-Natal " Welcoming the judgement, Eastern Cape Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Barry Madolo, said it can never be overemphasised how important human life is "The NPA will continue to pursue such cases with vigour to send a strong message and deter would-be murderers," said Madolo

A GROUP of car washers who have been operating in Durham Road in Mthatha say the King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD) Local Municipality is taking away their only means of survival after ordering them to stop working in the area Thobile Nonhi (32), from Marubeni in Libode, said he and other men have been washing cars in the street for several years

However, in 2024, municipal officials told them to stop, claiming their work was making the area dirty and that the chemicals they were using were damaging the tar road

"I'm a married man with children in high school The money I make here is the only income I have to support my family We are not refusing to move, but

they have not given us an alternative place to work We are sitting at home now, confused and desperate," he said

He said that if they attempted to continue working, municipal officials would seize the cars they were washing, forcing the owners to retrieve them from municipal premises and pay R1200

Nonhi said this crackdown began early in 2024 and has continued ever since

Siyabonga Mkhobeni (36), from Port St Johns, echoed Nonhi's concerns

He said the municipality refers to local bylaws when removing them, accusing them of damaging the road surface

"But we are only using regular soap, nothing harmful They started pushing us out in February last year We have rent to pay, children to feed We have been left with nothing What's confusing is that some people have been arrested

while others have not "

He added that when the municipality removes people from a place, they are supposed to be relocated, but that is not happening to them

"We are not sure; maybe they are trying to force us to commit a crime We have changed our lives and are trying to earn an honest living "

Mkhobeni said they have approached various government offices for assistance but have received no help They even took their concerns to the King of the Abathembu Nation, King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo, hoping for intervention

A concerned resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said he grew up struggling in the area and is now well-educated

He expressed frustration at the munic-

ipality s actions

"Not all of us are born equal, and people survive in different ways The municipality is destroying livelihoods; meanwhile, basic service delivery is failing Just look at the overflowing toilets and the sewage running down the streets

“Instead of fixing these issues, they chase away people who are simply trying to earn a living," he said

Spokesperson of the Kingdom of Abathembu, Lwandile Mtikrakra, confirmed that the aggrieved people had come to the palace

"But they have not met with the King to register their grievances," he said Express contacted the spokesperson for King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD) Local Municipality, Sonwabo Mampoza, for a comment, but he did not respond to the media enquiry that was sent to him

number of illegal firearms in our communities "

She added that ongoing development would continue for the new constables, including management forums and further training opportunities

The Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Support Services, Major General Nolitha Tito, reminded the constables that the real challenges of policing begin now "You are now entering a harsh and unkind world Crime is increasing, and your responsibility is to fight it You have taken an oath to serve not just the Eastern Cape, but the entire country You may be deployed anywhere," said Tito She urged them to serve with discipline and integrity, warning against forming friendships with criminals "You will be rewarded for good work but corrected when necessary Do not let bad influences derail your career "

Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection, Major General Zithulele Dladla, also cautioned the recruits against being tempted by money through corrupt acts "A million rand gained through crime is not worth your 20-year career; once you are caught, it is over Choose the right path You will learn many things from your colleagues; pick the good, not the bad," he advised

MunicipalitystartsHeritageMonth with50kmcyclingcompetition

THE Mbashe Local Municipality, in partnership with Mbhashe Cycling Adventures, kicked off a 50 km cycling race as part of the iLifa LoMbhashe build-up programme in celebration of Heritage Month

Ten enthusiastic cyclists participated from Willowvale Express Garage, heading to Lurhwayizo Store, where the event concluded

The Mbhashe Local Municipality spokesperson, Babalwa Magqwanti, said the event aims to promote cycling among the youth as a fun, healthy lifestyle and a potential career path, whilst also contributing to local development through sport and community involvement

"Cyclists rode through Mbhashe villages spreading energy, unity and the message of healthy, active living Communities gathered at the roadside to cheer, children waved, and the atmosphere was beautiful

“From the rolling hills of Wil-

lowvale to the scenic routes of Lurhwayizo Village, the cycling activation event was more than just a ride; it was about bringing people together, showcasing our municipality, and moving forward as one," Magqwanti said

The event was organised in collaboration with Mbhashe Cycling Adventures, a local cycling group passionate about promoting the sport within rural communities

Magqwanti said the primary aim of the event was to educate and inspire young people who might be interested in cycling, both as a recreational activity and a potential career path

By introducing them to the basics of cycling, she said, the initiative hoped to nurture future talent and encourage healthy, active lifestyles amongst youth in the area

Likhaya Nkonki, one of the cyclists, said that the ride had been quite challenging and some participants had struggled, but it was fun and enjoyable, and many managed to finish the race

Magqwanti said the initiative

formed part of the municipality's broader strategy to boost local economic development through sport and tourism whilst preserving and celebrating the area's cycling heritage

Mbhashe Local Municipality mayor, Samkelo Janda, said that during the third commemoration of the Lurhwayizo battle, the local authority was approached by a local cycling club that wanted to be part of the commemoration annually

"We are happy with this as it forms part of boosting our local economic development initiatives

“The cycling also forms part of our intention to increase tourism in our area, and that is one of the reasons why we support this cycling initiative Cycling also creates diversity in our tourism sector," he said

Janda said that cyclists would also be welcome to the area as the local authority starts to support cycling

He called it the municipality's competitive advantage as far as tourism was concerned

A FOURTH-year student from Walter Sisulu University, currently doing an Advanced Diploma in Public Management, Sipho Ellen Tshaka (29), has published his third book titled, I Think God Is Gay He is originally from Bizana He confirmed that he has published three books so far The first one, titled Confused in Love, was published in 2020 It's a novel that narrates the foolish decisions he made from high school up to college

The second book is The Mystery of Heart - 69 Drowning Women

"An autobiographical book, it shares the stories of each individual in my life that I have stepped on, broken, used, lied to, and cheated on It reflects the life of a man lost in his own psychotic life, using others to fulfil his empty life," he said He said his roots and upbringing shaped much of who he is and how he views the world He said growing up in a small town where struggles are a common denominator, he learned early about faith, pain, resilience and the contradictions of life

He confirmed that he has also been nominated for The Book Behind the Awards ceremony for one of his books: I Think God Is Gay, and he would like the support of the people, as well as the sharing of his work

into hell if they live differently

He confirmed that this is his third book His first book was titled Confused in Love, which explores the reckless decisions of his youth and how he played with ladies hearts all in the name of love

According to him, the book was born from wounds that refused to stay silent He saw how many people were suffering under the weight of religious judgement, told that who they are is wrong, unworthy or sinful

"I grew up hating those people because I was told that who they are is evil and wrong But as I grew up and experienced life in different places, churches and cultures, I have come to my own conclusion God is not that small; He is not so cruel that he would create His children and, at the end of it all, just throw them to the flames of hell

“The God I came to understand and believe in loves all those who seek a place next to him, regardless of who they choose to be or how they live their lives I decided to write this book to tell my truth, to start a conversation that others were too afraid to have, and to give voice to those who feel exiled from faith communities "

Tshaka confirmed that this book is suitable for both young and older people

foods, such as red meat After researching alternatives, her aunt discovered that rabbit meat is beneficial for her health condition

"She then decided to buy two rabbits: a buck (male rabbit) and a doe (female rabbit) We started selling rabbits to generate income, but it has not been easy because many people are not well-informed about the benefits of rabbit meat It is even harder to convince them, so we try to sell in town, and most of our customers come from a WhatsApp group of farmers," explained Zimbini

She added that they plan to obtain a licence or certificate to supply restaurants that sell rabbit meat

"When my aunt first introduced me to rabbits, I was afraid of them But over time, I realised they are harmless and easy to raise I also noticed that some businesses are rearing rabbits commercially, and you can even become a supplier to those businesses We want to expand our market so that our business can grow "

She also encouraged young people to overcome their reluctance towards farming "Many young people are lazy when it comes to farming, but they should remember that agriculture contributes significantly to economies worldwide Farming requires hard work and dedication "

"My book titled, I Think God Is Gay, is a deeply personal and spiritually provocative narrative It challenges traditional religious stigma whilst exploring the reconciliation of faith and sexuality Through my own experiences, it addresses issues that affect real people But it is not just about pain; it is about discovery It reimagines God as a figure of love, inclusivity and compassion beyond the boxes religion has built " He added that this book is about challenging a god that is so small that he cannot accommodate everyone, just a select few It is about a god that is praised in church and claimed to be ever-loving and great, but who will still do everything in his power to throw his people

He said readers will learn that God is bigger than religion and love is greater than dogma

They will confront uncomfortable truths about hypocrisy in the church, but also encounter the hope of a new inclusive theology

According to him, it also teaches courage to question, to embrace identity and to believe in a God who does not condemn but affirms

Tshaka said he is busy with his fourth book, which is already in progress, and readers can expect it between January and March 2026

His books are available online at Burble co za and Amazon

They can also contact him directly at 078 183 9167, and he will send copies to them via courier service
