Municipality snubs festival

Instead of basking in the glow they were expecting, would-be Stellenbosch festivalgoers were left decidedly in the dark
Those in the know, pundits in the events-organising sphere and relevant Stellenbosch municipal officials were not surpised when the Glow Festival Stellenbosch, planned for Friday 19 to Sunday 21 September, did not materialise this past weekend.
This, given a reputation for unreliability of its organiser David Huni
Six years ago Huni hosted the Garden of Lights Festival in Jan Marais Park, a “poorly-managed event” according to Stellenbosch Municipality
Municipal spokesperson Stuart Grobbelaar said council had resolved not to approve any future events by Huni, as many visitors and vendors of the 2019 festival had demanded refunds from him.
Warnings of Huni’s events had also come from those who attended his events before – vendors and hosts from George
to Australia, where Huni was set to host light or dinosaur-related festivals
A history of organising events and then cancelling them at the last minute is so well-known that Cape Talk radio presenter Lester Kiewit of Good Morning Cape Town kept tabs on Huni’s multiple dealings for five years.
His modus operandi seems to be to promote the events, without the necessary permissions and permits, and then cancel a few days before they are set to take place.
This same sequence of events took place last week when the organisers of the Glow Festival Stellenbosch posted a notice on the event’s social-media page:
“We regret to inform you that, due to unforeseen circumstances, we have no option but to postpone the Christmas Lights Festival [sic], which was originally scheduled to take place from 19 to 21 September 2025 at Sandringham Farm.
“The new dates for the festival will be announced shortly via this platform. All patrons are reminded that their tickets will remain valid for the rescheduled dates.”
After the local municipality’s warnings Eikestadnuus reached out to Mariette (she refused to state her surname), a member of the organising team and whose details were on the Facebook page, in August, but received no response.
According to Grobbelaar, the cancellation of the festival was expected.
“The cancellation of the 2025 event came as no surprise to us and has again left visitors and vendors frustrated,” he said.
“While the organisers are promising refunds, we remain concerned given the history of refund disputes in 2019. For years it seems that many of these events are always cancelled at the last minute due to ‘unforeseen circumstances’.”
These include events in various provinces and even events seemingly arranged in Australia and Canada
“We urge residents to exercise caution when large events are advertised and to always confirm whether the municipality has granted approval. Stellenbosch Municipality will continue to prioritise the safety of our residents and ensure
that only lawful, well-managed events are hosted in our area,” Grobbelaar said. In 2022 the Department of Northern Territory Consumer Affairs in Australia warned consumers of a Dinosaur Festival Darwin, organised by Huni, which was set to be held at the Jingili Water Gardens
It stated: “The venue operators have confirmed that the event will neither go ahead at the Jingili Water Gardens nor the Darwin Show Grounds on that date Applications to hold the event on another date have not been received.”
According to the NT Consumer Affairs tickets were still being sold for the event despite no office application for the event to be held, much like here in Stellenbosch
After various attempts, Eikestadnuus spoke to Mariette and asked what her involvement was with Huni, the Glow Festival and the recent cancellation as well as the Dinosaur World event, which is planned for the Van der Stel Sports Ground, but she declined to comment. All attempts to get comment from Huni were unsuccessful.

A peace-loving guy with a big love for golfing.
This is how friends and family of Joe Esitang will remember him The 65-yearold was on his way to work on the morning of Tuesday 16 September when he was struck down on the R44, close to his place of employment, Stellenbosch Golf Club.
According to colleague Meisie Peter, the beloved caddy was a good person who looked out for her when she had started working at the Stellenbosch Golf Club in 2007.
“Joe was a very respectful man to young and old,” Peter, who is a chef at the club, said. “He loved his job and was always around carrying those bags in the club. I hope his soul rests in peace. He was not supposed to die the way he did ” Esitang was killed on that Tuesday morning after being knocked down by a traffic officer of the Stellenbosch Municipality.
According to the municipality an on-duty traffic officer was in pursuit of a vehicle that attempted to speed away While the officer was in pursuit, Esitang was struck.
Emergency services and paramedics were on the scene and stabilised the caddy, before he was transported to hospital. Esitang later succumbed to his injuries.
In a statement the municipality said an investigation into the circumstances
surrounding the tragic incident has been launched. The municipality also promised to cooperate with the police investigation.
Dr Geoffrey Esitang said he will remember his elder brother as a peaceful fellow who loved their 95-year-old mother “Before his passing he came to visit me and our mum in Pretoria,” Dr Esitang told Eikestadnuus
“He had the utmost love for her, so I’m glad he had the opportunity to visit, almost as if he was saying goodbye.”
Esitang’s love for golf was not bound to his work as caddy. He was also part of a golf team made up of caddies and used to be a fixture at the Pinelands Golf Club, the brother explained.
Despite living in Khayamandi for the last decade Esitang was born and bred in Gugulethu, where he will be laid to rest on Saturday 28 September.
He is survived by two brothers, two sisters and his mother.

Japie bly in aandhouding
’n 21-jarige is Saterdag 13 September gewond ná 'n skietery in Kylemore.

Consultation with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is now underway in the case of former Hawks member Monwabisi Nyamanda.
He is accused of shooting his wife, Vuyokazi (41) after the two allegedly had an argument at their Khayamandi home on Saturday 21 December 2024. According to reports Vuyokazi had fled from the couple’s home to neighbours on the fatal day
It is believed Nyamanda followed and shot at his wife 18 times in full view of neighbours. He appeared in the Stellenbosch Magistrates’ Court on Monday (22 September).

The case was postponed for further consultation until Wednesday 22 October.
Many school-going girls in the Cape Winelands district are unable to access sanitary towels during their monthly menstruation This often leads to them missing important school days, which could lead to poor academic performance and limiting of their academic potential For this reason, the Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM) distributed sanitary towels to girls of more than 30 schools across the district, including Stellenbosch, during August and September “No girl should have to use toilet paper or newspaper when ‘that time of the month’ comes around, but this is the case for many girls across the district,” said CWDM execut during their period to avoid embarrassing s have access to safe and hygienic pads that

Residents packed the Raithby Meth odist church hall on Thursday 18 September, confronting Eskom and Stellenbosch municipal officials over continuous power outages plaguing the area.
The community-engagement session provided locals from Raithby Village surrounding farms with a long-awaited opportunity to meet utility representa tives, voice burning concerns and de mand answers about electricity failures disrupting businesses and daily life.
Executive mayor Jeremy Fasser opened the meeting, acknowledging ongoing concerns about outages, len repair times and infrastructure-capa uncertainty “Nobody is here to point fingers. Heritage and history take on a tangible and practical meaning when newer generations of a single family carry on a long-standing business many people have come to associate with them over the years.
This is true for a Jamestown family, who remain renowned purveyors of fresh strawberries in the greater Stellenbosch.
Family matriarch Ivy Denyssen, or “Ma Ivy” as she was affectionately known, was the original strawberry seller in the family Her famous fruit with ice cream became a popular treat associated with the Jamestown Strawberry Festival.
Now aged 87, Ma Ivy still helps great-granddaughter, Annelynn George (5), carry on the family tradition at the Jamestown Street Market. Held on the last weekend of the month, the market also plays a significant part in the historic festival that will return in 2026.
“Ma’s stall has become a much-loved part of the community’s food culture,” granddaughter Lynn George, mom to Annelyn, pointed out.
“It is an enormous source of pride, not just as a family business, but a living tradition passed down from Ma Ivy. Strawberry farming has deep roots in here, and her stall is something people genuinely look forward to It is never just about selling strawberries and ice cream, but community, connection and sharing something joyful.”
George spoke of how she teaches Annelynn and her brother Thomas (4) that
hard work gives people a deep sense of identity.
For the market Annelynn and Ma Ivy make the strawberry jam together, using the original recipe. “I get to wear my apron and help Ma Ivy stir,” Annelyn proudly said. “I’m the taster!
George’s husband, Alvin, does much of the heavy lifting, fetches supplies and works behind the scenes.
The Friday evening before market day is filled with packing ice cream, prepping toppings, cleaning fruit, labelling jars and coordinating signs. Grandpa Donevan Denyssen helps man the stands, because he knows just about everyone.
According to George, the Jamestown Street Market has become a celebration of heritage and gives families like hers a space to share stories, grow small businesses and pass traditions down to younger generations.
