Rechaux Browne, a proud Strand local and devoted mother of eight, is boldly stepping into the spotlight as an inspiring figure of transformation and authentic self-expression
Best known for her impactful presence on the kykNET reality series Die Brug (DStv channel 144), the 43-year-old is now making her mark in the world of pageantry and personal empowerment
Browne’s story transcends reality TV; it is a powerful testament to
resilience through life’s many seasons From facing child abuse and relationship abuse to overcoming profound personal challenges, she embodies strength and hope Browne’s journey reminds us all that difficult times are temporary, and brighter days are always ahead
On Die Brug she wasn’t just building bridges in the literal sense; she was connecting hearts and inspiring viewers with her genuine courage and authenticity
Now, as a Mrs South Africa semi-finalist, Browne boldly chal-
lenges limiting beliefs and negativity, championing self-love and growth For her it is about fully embracing who one is meant to be at every stage of life
As a mother of eight, including a daughter who survived a life-threatening illness, Browne deeply understands the value of cherishing every moment These experiences have fuelled her mission to inspire others to view life’s hardships as temporary phases, seasons to grow through rather than be defined by
“My daughter once told me:
‘Mom, take the opportunity or lose the chance’ That’s how I choose to live, seizing every moment in her honour and showing others how to emerge from tough seasons stronger and more hopeful,” she says Browne’s inspiring transition from reality TV to the runway is a powerful reminder that life’s ups and downs shape our unique stories

Ever since the reopening of the Strand Indoor Pool earlier this year following a nine-month closure the community continues to voice its disappointment, as the cold water renders the facility largely unusable in winter and the ongoing expenditure on staff unjustifiable
This has raised questions about the efficacy of the prolonged closure for most of last year (“Indoor pool in Strand reopened”, DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette, 29 January)
Concerned resident Denise Letts voiced the community’s frustration “We were led to believe the pool was being fully repaired This is not just a matter of just swimming; it’s a matter of public trust ”
The extended closure was primarily to address heating issues, yet the problem persists prompting residents to question why the pool was reopened in its current state “We have been told all the equipment to heat the pool is there waiting to be installed and fixed, yet nothing is done,” Letts highlighted, adding that currently only “about three people are brave enough to enter the pool”
Furthermore, female patrons have started a petition to raise concerns around the temperature of the water in the showers These reportedly provide only cold water, requiring multiple showers to be run simultaneously to achieve any warmth, which is seen as indicative of poor maintenance
The City of Cape Town’s Recreation and Parks Department acknowledged the concerns, attributing the slow progress to an “incremental, phased approach” for repairs
It said the project, “encompassing
heating and major electrical works, was set for completion by the end of June 2025, with HVAC system works to follow”
Regarding the on-site heating equipment, the department cited overall project timelines for installation, clarifying the operational budget which covers essential expenses, including staff salaries, ensuring the facility remains “functional and accessible to various organisations and community bodies” despite the cold water
“Staff remain employed and on duty, maintaining the facility even during periods when the pool is not fully usable due to the water temperature ”
Addressing complaints about the showers, the department said: “The department is aware of the community’s concerns and can confirm that the showers are fully operational and do not require multiple showers to be run simultaneously in order to produce warm water The design of the facility places the geysers on the upper level of the building As a result there is a short delay, typically less than a minute, for the hot water to travel through the system and reach the downstairs showers
“This is a normal function of the building’s plumbing infrastructure and not an indication of a fault or failure ”
In response to fears that raising concerns may lead to another lengthy closure without meaningful improvement, it said: “The City remains committed to maintaining a safe, clean and functional environment for all users and on-site teams continue to monitor the facility to ensure systems are running efficiently and address any concerns there may be ”
Significant progress continues on the Strand seawall upgrade project, a critical infrastructure initiative that will strengthen coastal protection and enhance the popular promenade area
Construction teams are actively engaged in bulk excavations, foundation casting, and the strategic positioning of large pre-cast concrete wall units, keeping the project on schedule for completion in November next year
These specially engineered L-shaped concrete units have been prefabricated to withstand the harsh coastal environment, meeting rigorous quality standards to ensure their resilience and longevity against marine conditions
“We are looking forward to opening this new portion of the promenade along Strand Beach,” said Eddie Andrews, deputy mayor and Mayoral Committee member for Spatial Planning and Environment
“Once finished it will look like the already-completed seawall and promenade area, which has become a vibrant attraction for all ”
Andrews cautioned that while on-site work was progressing smoothly the project still has “a number of months” ahead He also highlighted recent revisions to traffic-management arrangements designed to improve flow and efficiency, and minimise disruption to daily life in the area
“We thank residents and visitors for their patience with the disruptions and temporary closure of areas,” he said “We appreciate the support and positive feedback, which further motivates our project teams ”
Traffic-management arrangements will soon be extended eastward as the project advances Road users and pedestrians are urged to remain vigilant and comply with
all signage and instructions from flag persons Pedestrians and cyclists will continue to be guided by clear detour signs around work zones to ensure their safe passage along alternative routes
Once a section of the large L-shape wall units is securely in place, the next crucial step involves reinstating the beach and backfilling on the land side This will be followed by the installation of new services on the landward side of the newly constructed seawall
Subsequently, the project team will begin placing the curved cope units on top of the wall units and paving the promenade
A significant aspect of this upgrade is the relocation of several existing sewer services, currently vulnerable to damage as they are buried directly under the beach The new services and road will all be safely protected by the robust new seawall
The project has seen the successful placement of 36 wall units More than 300 cope units and 90 wall units have already been manufactured, and are ready for placement, with many more in production
“We are looking forward to continued progress and ongoing support from the community,” concluded Andrews

There is a palpable excitement in the air down at the local Suzuki dealership Sales are good, new products are frequently being rolled out and existing models are being updated regularly.
The dealership recently got its first batch of the new Dzire, which is more than just an updated model. Starting from R224 900, the Dzire is a very affordable small sedan suitable for young families and reps
The addition of a boot adds a secure space to keep one’s belongings snugly hidden from prying eyes Anthony Luyt believes the boot is the difference which makes the Dzire worth getting, as it offers a third more space than a Swift Nazeem Aziz says the Dzire is the safest car in its segment, with six air bags and all the essential safety equipment like ABS with EBD and stability control
The technology offering is of a high specification with wireless connectivity, cruise control and an overdrive button to improve cruising fuel consumption, something which the competition does not have, adds Kolene Torlage
In a nutshell the Dzire is the size of a Swift, but with a bigger boot and yet it has similar fuel consumption and performance SuzukiHelderbergisabranchoftheTrustAuto Groupandissituatedat207MillsStreet,Gants Plaza,Strand
Working around the peninsula while regularly travelling to his farm, he provides valuable insight into how these vehicles perform in real-life conditions
After three months with his new bakkie, Pierre reports a noticeable decrease in fuel consumption, now averaging around 9,5 l per 100 km (though Toyota claims 7,4 l per 100 km is possible)
With his livestock trailers attached consumption slightly rises from 9,1 to 9,5 litres per 100 km. He has adapted well to the hybrid driving style and remains pleased with his purchase.
“The HiLux excels on gravel and is pleasant to drive in urban environments,” Pierre noted. “The stop-start system functions exceptionally well. However, it doesn’t match the Amarok’s comfort during extended highway journeys. The bakkie offers abundant power that feels accessible and usable ”
The new mild-hybrid HiLux represents Toyota’s effort to refine the driving experience while preparing both the vehicle and its loyal customers for an automotive future beyond the traditional petrol-diesel dichotomy. It subtly enhances performance while moderately reducing fuel consumption, an excellent first step into the new bakkie era and something of a technological showcase Toyota has been selling the HiLux in South Africa for 50 years, spanning eight generations. This marks the first mild-hybrid option, featuring a 4,3 amphour, 7,6 kg lithium-ion battery that generates power when braking or decelerating (providing 7% more output) and

As the Cape’s winter rolls in, the False Bay coastline is undergoing a transformation.
Cool winds sweep across the water heavy clouds cast shadows over the coast, and the ocean reveals a different kind of rhythm. For shore anglers, or at least those who brave the cold the rocks, beaches and estuary mouths, winter presents a great opportunity but also responsibility
We see the return of our awesome national fish like galjoen, white steenbras, belman stumpnose and, in the past, musselcracker I say “in the past” because Strand and surrounds was once an awesome area to target white and black musselcracker
False Bay’s winter fishing scene needs to become as much about tradition as it is about conservation At the heart of this shift is a growing understanding that responsible fishing is not a limitation but a must!
False Bay remains one of the Cape’s richest angling environments although it may not seem that way
Supporting this movement is Fishing Republic. We are a conservation-based fishing store in Strand, helping to educate, equip, and empower anglers who value both catching fish and the stunning coastline and scenic beauty we are so lucky to have as anglers.
False Bay’s winter shoreline hosts a wide variety of
target species. Unlike boat-based fishing that chases migratory species offshore, shore anglers rely on tides, structure, and patience to pursue harder-earned but equally rewarding catches.
The winter shoreline is alive with fish; we just need more anglers to put on the wetsuits and jackets and get out there to fish. Winter is certainly my favourite time to fish.

collapsing one is not the number of rods in the sand, but the attitude behind them.
This is where Fishing Republic plays an essential role Located just minutes from some of the best beach and reef fishing on this coast, the shop serves as a guardian of the conservation ethos. Staffed by extremely knowledgeable anglers, the store does more than sell tackle we equip anglers with the tools and understanding to fish ethically and sustainably
Fishing Republic promotes circle hooks for safer catchand-release barbless options for reducing injury and up-to-date size or bag limits.
We also run shore-based fishing clinics, especially in winter helping new and experienced anglers target species like steenbras and galjoen while educating them on seasonal closures and ethical release practices We also love to teach anglers how to handle fish safely in the shoreline how to tag and take genetic samples for further study
We also participate in coastal clean-ups and citizen science projects, such as tagging and catch logging, genetic sampling and putting pressure on those who take advantage of the ocean. We ensure that conservation remains a part of the everyday fishing routine
It’s easy to get swept up in the excitement of winter fishing when the reels scream and the sea gives gener-
ously But the most memorable catches are those fish you can tag and release safely for future generations to enjoy Responsible shore anglers should photograph and release trophy fish
