A HEROIC act unfolded at a fuel station in Penford, Kariega, on the evening of January 3, when officers from Atlas Security bravely went beyond their call of duty to save a life during a dire medical emergency.
Whileperformingtheirroutinesecurity duties, the officers were alerted by the property manager about a severe incident involving a 37-year-old man with a stab wound to the chest. Demonstrating remarkable composure and using their first-aid training, the officers quickly applied measures to control the bleeding and stabilise the victim, providing crucialassistanceinthosecriticalmoments.
Atlas Community Development Manager, Ryan Morris explained that it was their Armed Response officers B11 and B155involvedintheevent.Theseofficers are assigned Bravo numbers and that’s their call sign, so as to protect their identity. He explained, “Armed Response manager, B2, served in the SAPS for 16 years. Six years in the flying squad and then 10 years as a trainer. He then joined Atlas Security 18 years ago and has been in charge of training our Armed Response team. Not only focusing on the new recruits but also doing regular testing and training with current officers ensuring that they are on top of their games in multiple areas, including close combat training, firearm training, fitness, driving, medical training, fire response, crime scene preservation, and so much more. Over and above his work, we have medical professionals doing regular medical and first aid training with all our officers, to ensure that they are equipped for any emergency, as more often than not our guys are the first responders to various emergency situa-
tions,” he added.
This swift and decisive action proved invaluable as the South African Police Service (SAPS) soon arrived, according toMorris, aidingincontactingtheambulance. Upon their arrival, paramedics took over and transported the injured man to Provincial Hospital for further treatment.
Meanwhile, aweeklater, analertfrom thepublicandswiftactionfromAtlasSecurity led to the prompt apprehension of a burglary suspect still in Kariega. The incident took place on Adam Street in Valleisig when a suspect was seen fleeing a property. The sighting was reported via social media, quickly reaching Atlas Security’s armed response.
AC1coordinatedcloselywithU3while U1 was dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, U1, with information from AC1 and witnesses, located and detained a suspect on Aaron Street. The individual was found in possession of copper taps, confirmedasstolenbythepropertyowner.
Investigations revealed a break-in throughthebackstorageshed, wherethe suspect had stolen electrical equipment. A blue striped bag containing the stolen items was recovered outside the property.
Shortly after the suspect’s detention, Morris said Kariega SAPS arrived and took the individual into custody, facilitating the registration of a formal case.
SAPS confirmed the incident, and encouraged the community to speak up when they see suspicious activities.
Morrisproudlyconcluded,“Weareincredibly proud of the actions of the officers. The passion that they put into the safety and service of the communities thattheyserveissomethingthatcan’tbe put into words. Atlas Security wouldn’t be what we are today without the daily heroics that our people perform.”
‘Thank you isn’t quite enough’
We, the Community Policing Forum (CPF) of Kariega, held a soup and bread feeding project in our community in December and were overwhelmed by all the support we received.
. The sponsors: Sovereign Foods for the major contribution, Peter Moore (butchery), Peter Barnes (Levyvale Super Spar), the entire community for donations of bread, margarine, soup packets, soya mince, and mashed potatoes, Tanya Erasmus for the mashed potatoes and two pots, Mr. and Mrs. H. van der Riet for the seven large pots, and the SAPS kitchen for the cooking preparations.
. The organisers: Pat Unsworth, Roelf Basson, Church Street Police Station, CPF members (executive committee), Brigadier André van Niekerk Swart andseveralmembers.SpecialthankstoWarrantOfficer Cindy Bester and Sergeant Cisciro Jonathan. . Special guests: Atlas Security Company, headed by Commander Mark Hitchins, with Captain Atlas toentertainall.Thekidswereparticularlyhappy.Captain Jonker, the Ladies’ Network and Pam Golding’s Golden Girls.
“Thank you” doesn’t cover the gratitude we, as the CPF, have for the assistance we received to make this enormous project the huge success it was! We were welcomed by Gavin Gaskor, and every request was met graciously with an attitude of “nothing is too much trouble.” Our gratitude is immeasurable. We all worked as one enormous team, serving our community’s needs in massive numbers. All left happy and well satisfied. All of the above culminated in a tremendously successful day. It was truly a labour of love.

IN a remarkable transition from entertaining audiences to serving the community, Alvera de VosHendricks officially began her tenure as a PR Councillor for the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality recently. Known for her soulful performances that captivated many, Hendricks now steps into a role driven by her deep love and compassion for people.
Hendricks attributes her journey from the stage to public service to a lifelong passion for helping others. “Being a performer, from captivating audiences on stage to serving our communities as a PR Councillor, was based on my love and compassion for peo-
ple,” she shared. “This was clearly reflected in the songs I sang, both on stage and at church.”
Her commitment is not just a job but a heartfelt dedication to the people of Kariega, which transcends political affiliations. Hendricks is particularly concerned about fighting crime, poverty, and the escalating domestic violence in the area. She plans to tackle these issues through home visits, assistance in accessing state grants, and addressing youth unemployment.
“My singing has always reflected my love for people,” she explained. “As a PR Councillor, it is not merely a job. It’s an expression of my love and concern, especially for the poor, vulnerable, and physically challenged members of our
communities.”
Hendricks is well aware that domestic violence impacts the core of community life, which is family. “The degradation of family life affects every sphere of our lives,” she noted.
Dedicated to serving with integrity, compassion, and humility, Hendricks views her role as more than just a position. “Pledging to serve with dedication and commitment means putting the needs of our community at the forefront of every decision I make. It means being a voice for the voiceless, a champion for justice, and a beacon of hope for those who need it most.”
Leveraging her performance background, Hendricks said she brings valuable skills to her new
position. “As a performer, I learned the value of connecting with diverse audiences, understanding their needs, and tailoring my message to resonate with them.”
Encouraging youth to pursue education and entrepreneurship, and empowering women to drive positive change, are among her goals. Balancing family and her role in public service, the mother of two boys prioritises things based on the needs arising at any given moment.
After an electrifying performance at last year’s Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber annual ladies breakfast in September, the songstress mentioned that lots of amazing things were busy happening, “which I don’t want to
mention now. The main goal is to become known in the industry and to inspire through song and let anyone know that your dream is valid and will come true. Just work hard and never give up,” she told the UD Express at the time. In hindsight, as the self-proclaimed “big dreamer” said, indeed, nothing is impossible for someone who dreams big and works hard, driven by a true sense of serving. Hendricks concluded with a touch of wisdom, urging all to “always be a blessing and never a curse.” With a renewed sense of purpose, she signalled her commitment to the community, emphasising, “My time to serve is now, and as the party, we stand for our people and our children’s future.”

“Dit gaan goed by ons.
