LOCAL YOUTH TO RUSSIA

High
Her coach Thando Hlakula said she won the u-14 Girls Championship after winning all her games in the SA Junior Closed Chess Championship. Her CHESSA rating now stands at 1 811. She became sixth overall among female players in the country. Hlakula described Imkhitha’s participation in the tournament as a dream come true for her. He said she had qualified to represent the country before, but these prospects were scuppered by lack of funding. “This year alone she qualified to represent the country at the African Individual Chess Championships (Egypt), African School Chess Championships (Kenya) and FIDE Youth Olympiad (Colombia). She didn’t make it because she didn’t have the
money to pay for all the expenses needed for the trips.”
Describing Imkhitha as a brilliant player, Hlakula dubbed the tournament as more than just an international competition. “There were many activities in between. Out of nine games Imkhitha won four and drew one She came away with four and a half points.”
Imkhitha told City Vision she found the trip exciting She learnt many things, including how to conduct herself as a player “These included how to survive when visiting a foreign country with or without
support We South Africans were so united even though we came from different provinces; we were like a family.”
Imkhitha said it was her second trip outside South Africa. In 2023 she took part in the u-12 World Cadet Championship in Egypt.
Imkhitha described her experience of Russia as great. “People in Russia are so friendly. They were asking us questions about South Africa. They asked us about various things including culture and sport.”
Imkhitha’s mother Nosiphe said she was
over the moon and praised her daughter for her performance.
“I’m so excited for her I’m happy for her even though we always have some financial challenges whenever she needs to participate in these huge tournaments
“We struggle a lot because I’m unemployed. And she ended up not participating in some of them.
“However, she enjoys the support of her local team, including her coach; they try to be there for her, come what may.” Nosiphe encouraged all parents to allow their children to participate in sport.
Life will never be the same for the residents of Level Two informal settlement in Town Two after they officially received communal taps on Monday 14 July.
At least eight taps are installed in the area.
Level Two is one of the areas that were illegally established during Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.
Resident Nolusindiso Tom said they are delighted with the taps. She said the taps will make their lives easy.
She said they have been struggling to get water as most of them had illegal connections.
“We had to make alternative plans to get water because we were tired of always asking for water from the neighbouring areas. At least we see the movement. Our ward councillor is not sleeping on duty,” she said, adding that they also have chemical toilets.
Tom stated that they now need the installation of the electricity She said they are worried by the escalating crime in the area.
“People are getting robbed when they go
to work in the morning. At least if the City can install a light-emitting diode (LED) streetlights so we can see at night,” said Tom.
Ward 97 councillor Mthwalo Mkutswana said the aim is to provide basic services and improve people’s lives. He said it is the start of more things to come.
“We already installed at least 300 chemical toilets. On Monday 14 July, we handed over eight communal taps. The City is planning to add more communal taps. It is waiting for this coming financial year, which starts next month,” he said, adding that they are also planning to install electricity but didn’t specify when.
Mkutswana urged the community to look after the taps.

Hygiene is very important when you sell meat to the public, those were the remarks from Nokhaya ‘Manyawuza’ Kweba during the handover of a renovated shisanyama by the City in Town Two on Wednesday 16 July.
At least 10 fireplaces, four flushing toilets (two for men and two for women), five outdoor tables with chairs and a umbrella were handed over to the meat vendors
The shisanyama is situated at the corner of Japhta K. Masemola Road and Steve Biko Street in the area.
One of the vendors Olwethu Mbengo said she has been selling meat in the area for over 20 years. She said they are popular in Khayelitsha and the surrounding areas.
“At least we will save it now because the new fireplaces are permanent structures. We used to use metal braai stands. We al-
ways change them every two or three years because they get rusty,” she said “The contribution that was made by the City can look small to other people, but to us as people who are working here daily, we appreciate it. It means a lot to us. We promise to keep the area clean,” she said Mkutswana said a lot has been done to revamp the shisanyama “We also install burglar bars and put tiles on the floor on their ship containers. We also gave them tables and chairs with an umbrella for the customers to sit while they are eating,” said Mkutswana.
He said the aim is to change its outlook. He said informal businesses play a pivotal role in the economy
“These women have been working there for many years. They feed their families with the money they make there. There is no way that we can undermine their efforts,” he said.

The 1500 years of the legacy of Prophet Muhammad was launched on Wednesday 9 July at the Ghousia Manzil in Rylands Estate.
The event marked the beginning of the year-long programme titled The Legacy Project 1500, under the theme “A message of mercy, environmental awareness and social justice”.
A diverse programme of events for the year is planned that will feature a rich tapestry of local and international events.
A new dawn, “Embracing Islam with purpose and peace”, reflects transformative experience of reverting to Islam.
The programme will honour the journey of discovering truth, finding inner peace and integrating into a new spiritual path with clarity, intention and tranquillity.
Cultural and artistic celebrations with an exhibition of Islamic art and calligraphy, live and audio-visual presentations portraying the essential aspects of the life and legacy of the Prophet Muhammad, honouring the timeless strength, wisdom and sacrifice of the women who nurtured the roots of Islam, a mass community exhibition on the Muslim world at a venue to be announced, showcasing models of sacred rites and a rare exhibition of the relics of Prophet Muhammad.
“The 1 500 Year Legacy Project is not
merely a celebration of history,” said Dr Elias Parker, one of the convenors of the initiative, “it is an urgent call to reflect on the universal values of Islam and their relevance to contemporary global challenges.
“We want this commemoration to be a catalyst for social justice, environmental stewardships and interfaith understanding.”
The launch was attended by scholars, community leaders, activists, artists and media partners.
This year marks exactly 1 500 years since the birth of Prophet Muhammad, a towering figure whose teachings continue to shape the lives of over 1,9 billion Muslims worldwide.
For Muslim minorities, especially in countries such as South Africa, this commemoration is an opportunity to reaffirm identity, celebrate contributions to society and highlight shared values of peace and justice.
Part of the celebrations is a commemorative journal with contributions from internationally-acclaimed scholars and featuring contents where global scholars explore how the Prophet’s message resonated with issues of civilisation, justice and inclusivity. Youth and community programmes include national speech, essay and nasheed competitions, educational-resource
development for schools and madrasahs, and a youth-empowerment retreat aimed at inspiring the next generation to live by prophetic values.
An open invitation to individuals, institutions and organisations was extended to volunteer skills and time, sponsor events and programmes, praying for the success of this historic initiative and contribute to
publications and artistic projects
“This is a once-in-a-millennium milestone,” said Ml Abdul Khalique Allie, convenor of the Legacy 1500 Commission.
“We want every Muslim and our broader society to find inspiration in the universal message of the Prophet Muhammad.
