BAAKENS STREAM:

Residents raise alarm over sewage contamination

Residents living along the Baakens Stream have voiced serious concerns over the contamination of the stream.

RESIDENTS living along the Baakens Stream have voiced serious concerns over the contamination of the stream, which flows through several neighbourhoods in Gqeberha.

The stream has been emitting a strong sewage odour, which the council confirmed is due to ongoing sewage issues over the past few months.

According to the residents who wished to remain anonymous, the municipality attempted to address a problem at a local complex by redirecting sewage drains into the stream.

“As ratepayers, it is totally unacceptable to have a stream with open sewage behind our house,” they said.

“Those living in Carstens Road have to deal with the un-

bearable stench. We are well versed with this stream and its sudden change about three months ago.

“Unfortunately, our home is very close to the stream and we have to wake up and then end our day with the odour (especially if the wind blows wrong),” the resident said.

“This affects a vast area as far as the stream flows, Beverley Grove, Woodlands, Kamma Ridge, etc. We used to have an abundance of wildlife which has now declined as, we are sure, the water has killed some. We have grandchildren who enjoy playing at the back, but they can no longer do so, as it is too dangerous for them to even go close to the stream.”

The residents concluded that they fear the situation could lead to disease outbreaks, and expressed frustration over pay-

EC Health Department clarifies no medicine shortage

THE Eastern Cape Department of Health recently clarified that there is noshortageofmedicines.TheDepartment’s Director of Communications, Siyanda Manana, said it aims to streamline its cash flow by ordering medication based on availability at depots. If an item has been at the depot for more than seven weeks, ordering may be delayed to avoid financial over-commitment to suppliers.

“Financial sustainability is a key pillar among the Department’s five strategies. The Pharmaceutical Directorate seeks to achieve financial health through staggered ordering. The Pharmaceutical Unit monitors stock availability at depots in MthathaandGqeberha, whichaidsinfinancial sustainability,” he clarified. Manana added that previously, inefficient stock monitoring led to overordering and resultant financial strain, keeping stock on shelves for

extended periods. This inability to streamline cash flow has impacted the Department’s Goods and Services budget.

“The Department apologises for any previous communication suggesting restrictions on medicine ordering, whichtriggeredpanic.Itreassures the public that there is no medicine shortage and is committed to not compromising patient care, seeking to ensure longer and healthier lives for citizens,” the director concluded.

ing high rates while facing such issues.

The couple also expressed worries about the impact on property values, saying, this affects the marketability of their residences.

The residents urged the municipality to take immediate action to rectify the situation.

In response, Sithembiso Soyaya, Municipal Spokesperson, said, “The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is aware of a sewer line blockage in the vicinity of the Baakens River. The line was

completely obstructed by a buildup of fat, particularly at the section where the sewer line from Walker Drive Shopping Centre connects. Based on this, we suspect the source of the fat may be linked to that area. A cleanup operation has been arranged; however, adverse weather conditions have caused delays today. Additionally, a track inspector has been assigned to assess the line to prevent future occurrences. We appreciate the public’s patience as we work to resolve this issue.”

Minister engages NMU amid protests, financial aid issues

FOLLOWING a recent protest at the Nelson Mandela University (NMU), theMinisterofHigherEducationand Training,DrNobuhleNkabane, visited the institution as part of her national roadshow to assess the readiness of higher learning institutions.

The PE Express previously reported that students protested on the first dayoftheacademicyearduetoissues related to financial aid, accommodation, registration, and shuttle services.

Theminister’svisitprovidedacrucialplatformforstudentsandUniversity Management to discuss ongoing challenges and initiatives.

Nkabane also praised NMU’s stateof-the-art Science Centre, student housingstrategies, andstrategicpartnerships with institutions like the South African International Maritime Institute.

However, she also addressed challenges, including the increasing gap between applications and available capacity, accommodation shortages, and student financial aid concerns.

Highlighting the issue of application fees, Dr. Nkabane criticised universities that charge students despite limited capacity. She stressed the need for a centralised system and collective efforts with Universities in South Africa, to address this.

In a statement, NMU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sibongile Muthwa, was commended by the Minister for NMU’s policy of not charging application fees. Nkabane engaged with students and the Student Representative Council (SRC) to discuss pressing issues such as accommodation and NSFAS-related concerns.

The Minister committed to deploying a departmental delegation to address outstanding student access and funding issues over a week. The SRC shared their initiatives, like launching a fund to help students with debt, and made a plea for donations.

SRC Secretary-General, Buhle MchunuraisedconcernsoverNSFAS defunding students mid-year, leading to payment issues and potential evictions from accommodation. In response, Nkabane emphasised the Ministry’scommitmenttoaddressing governance issues, noting the appointment of a new NSFAS Board.

Professor Muthwa expressed gratitude for the Minister’s visit and reinforcedtheimportanceofcollaboration in resolving challenges. “We have pointed out that none of these problems can be solved without collaboration among all of us. Fortunately, our University has a strong culture of engagement with our students,” she said.

The visit highlighted both the challenges faced by NMU, and the proactive steps being taken to ensure student success through cooperative efforts among the University, the government, and student bodies.

In a separate statement, Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Buti Manamelahe, said the exploitationofvulnerablestudentsby landlords is deplorable and deeply worrying. This followed shocking reportsthatsomelandlordsdemandsexualfavoursfromstudentsinexchange for accommodation.

“I welcome the strong statement by NSFAScondemningtheseactionsand the decisive steps to investigate, blacklist, and terminate the services ofanyimplicatedlandlords,”Manamela said. He further emphasised the need for

greater accountability and oversight in student accommodation. “Institutions, accommodation provider associations,NSFAS,andourdepartment must work together to ensure that students are housed in safe, dignified environments, free from exploitation and abuse.”

Manamela urged affected students to report cases of exploitation immediately to their institutions, NSFAS, andlawenforcement.“Wewillnottolerateanyonewhopreysonstudents,” he said.

Whilethereportsoflandlordabuse are disturbing, Manamela also acknowledged that the overall student registration process for 2025 has been largely smooth, with minor glitches that are being attended to.

NKOSAZANA NGWADLA

NOMPUMELELO Adam, founder of Plus Size Innovation, is celebrating a significant milestone as her business expands with the addition of Stanley Saidi to the team.

This achievement marks a transformative point for Adam, an entrepreneur driven by personal experiences and a vision to empower others through fashion.

Adam’s journey began with a personal struggle to find stylish and comfortable clothing as a plussize individual.

“I started Plus Size Innovation because I wanted to help other women feel beautiful and confident,” she explained. Her brand’s distinctive offerings, notably the signature plus-size legging sets and crochet clothing, set her apart in a competitive market.

Her success is deeply rooted in the support from Masifunde Learner Development. “I’m grateful; Masifunde gave my business a platform to grow. Today, I’m proud to create jobs for others,”

Adam explained.

Masifunde provided her with invaluable resources, including a business hub, seed funding, industrial machines, mentorship, and bookkeeping services, all crucial in navigating the early challenges of entrepreneurship.

Transitioning from a solo venture to managing a team was a journey of learning and evolution.

“It was a rocky start, but I’m truly proud of the progress I’ve made,” Adam admitted.

Identifying a genuine need and staying true to her vision, combined with a strong network and the habit of celebrating small wins, were key to overcoming initial hurdles like limited resources and self-doubt.

Now, with the expansion of her team, Adam can serve more customers and drive innovation fast-

er.

“Expanding my team means I can reach more people and explore new opportunities,” she noted.

When hiring, Adam prioritises candidates with a strong work ethic, excellent communication skills, and a shared passion for the brand’s mission.

Maintaining company culture as the business grows is essential for Adam.

She is committed to leading by example and living the company’s values, ensuring that Plus Size Innovation continues to thrive on its founding principles even as it expands.

Looking ahead, Adam’s aspirations extend beyond local success.

She dreams of owning a plussize factory catering for both men and women, with a global supply chain built on her existing international customer base.

Her vision is not just about fashion; it’s about fostering inclusivity and providing quality clothing for all body types worldwide.

Reflecting on her journey, Adam offered advice to aspiring entrepreneurs, “Believe in yourself, stay focused on your vision, and be open to learning from your mistakes.”

She hoped that people would see her story as one of resilience, showcasing that personal challenges can fuel entrepreneurial innovation and empowerment.

WILLEMIEN GREEN

ABSA RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K: 10km record under threat

THEAbsaRunYourCitySeriesisproudtowelcomeglobalrunningsensation,AdriaanWildschutt, to compete on South African soil at the Absa Run Your City Gqeberha 10K on Sunday, April 13, 2025.

Asoneoftheworld’stopathletes, hisparticipation is a significant boost for South African road running, local sports, and the prestige of the Absa Run Your City Series.

Following a breakthrough year in 2024, Wildschutt, who holds four national track records, hasannouncedhisintentiontopursue the SA 10km record at the Absa Run Your City Gqeberha 10K.

His confidence in targeting the 27:35 SA record set by Precious Mashele at the inaugural Absa Run Your City Gqeberha 10K in 2023 is well-founded. The American-based top runner produced no fewer than six South African records last season including 3000m (7:32.99), 5000m (12:56.67), and 5000m indoors (12:56.76), as well as a new national 10 000m mark of 26:50.64 which accompanied a memorable 10th place finish in the Olympic final at the Stade de France last August.

“I’m looking forward to participating at the Absa Run Your City Gqeberha 10K,” confirms Wildschutt. “I chose the race because I hear thatit’safastcourseandIremembertheSouth African record being set there. I love competing, and sometimes that leads to records. I appreciate and respect Precious’s record and would never undermine the quality it took to set that record. However, I am aiming to break the South African record in Gqeberha and hopefully make it a lasting one.”

As one of the most sought-after track and road running stars in the United States, where he has been based for the past seven years, and aprominentcontenderonthelucrativeEuropean circuit, his decision to kick off his road running season on home soil speaks volumes. “To be honest, the race in Gqeberha lines up

bestwithmyschedule.Traininghasbeengoing very well in the last five weeks. We were able to continue to train at a high level. However, the next six weeks are going to be critical leadinguptosometrackracesandthe10kminGqeberha. I am very excited about that, and I am hopeful that everything will go as planned and I can perform at the best level I can.”

PerformingatthehighestlevelagainstworldclasscompetitorsonAfricansoilisnottheonly reason the Ceres-born SA 5000m champion chose Nelson Mandela Bay over other destinations.

Having run a number of 10km road races in

the Western Cape as a junior before moving to the US to study, 26-year-old Wildschutt reveals thatthroughhisbrother,Nadeel,whoran28:07 at the Absa Run Your City Durban 10K last year, hehasbeenfollowingtheAbsaRunYour City Series from across the Atlantic and was morethanreadytograbtheopportunitytotake partwhenitcame.Wildschuttconfirmsthathe spoke with his brother about the series, who had nothing but praise for the entire organisation.

“I was stoked to hear about that, which is why I wanted to compete in it in an attempt to dowell,”headds.“Ialsowanttotrysomething different and go to a different city I have never been to before. Racing in South Africa is unique. The running culture is different. I love the food afterwards and the vibe that follows the race. I feel a whole lot of people know me better and I can share a great experience with all of them.”

“We are excited to welcome Adriaan Wildschutt to the Absa Absa Run Your City Series in 2025,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Absa Absa Run Your City Series.

“His exceptional performance at the Olympics in France last August had South Africans on the edge of their seats — a proud moment for the nation. Setting a new national 10,000m record of 26:50.64 and finishing 10th on the world stage showcased his incredible talent. Adriaan brings excitement and quality racing to the series. We firmly believe that not only is a new SA 10km record within reach but there’s also a strong possibility it could be shattered convincingly. We’re equally excited to see how therestofthefieldrespondstohisrecord-breaking ambitions on race day. Spectators can expect top-tier competition and numerous standout performances. We look forward to witnessing the action unfold in Gqeberha as Adriaan pushestheboundariesofroadrunningonhome soil.”

Baseball club aims for historic victory

HANNES SCHOEMAN

THE Londt Park Baseball Club could be well represented when the Mandela Bay team aims to make history at the interprovincial tournament in Cape Town in April.

The Eastern Cape team finished third last year in their best effort to date, but assistant coach, Hennie Stander firmly believes they could go one better this time.

According to Stander, Gary Bailey, Cameron van Niekerk, Connor Stopforth, and Jonothan Viljoen all have the ability to help the Nelson Mandela Bay team win the tournament for the first time ever.

“The players are in high spirits, and that clearly shows in training while we prepare for the event,” said Stander.

“All my players are in excellent form. Bailey, a second baseman and pitcher, has already played three years for the team and also attended a national training camp in Cape Town in December last year.AndplayerslikeVanNiekerk,Stopforth, and Viljoen will never let the team down.”

He said the sport is healthy at Londt Park and the spirit is sound.

StanderisalsofullofpraiseforViljoen, who is the chairman, for his efforts with the junior players.

“Jono does wonders with the youngsters,” said Stander.

“He spends a lot of time with them, and his success rate clearly shows. With him in charge of the juniors, the future is in good hands. The talent coming through is phenomenal.”

Viljoen is also the chairman of the Mandela Bay Baseball Association.

Stander himself is a legend at the club. He has been in charge of the senior side for the last four years and played for the club (formerly Parks) from the age of eight.

Stander has also been a member of the first team for the last 12 years.

Although there are currently only four senior clubs in the league, Stander believes the standard of baseball in the province is still excellent.

The other first-league clubs are Red Sox and Pirates in Despatch, and Gelvandale.

Connor Stopforth is also reaching for the skies.
