2023 CAVRAA Meet opens with a bang

Discipline. Perseverance. Constant improvement.
Senator Francis ‘Tol’ N Tolentino, ably represented by his Chief of Staff Francisco Ashley L. Acedillo, shared these qualities that athletes must have during the opening rites of the 2023 Cagayan Valley Regional Athletic Association (CAVRAA) Meet held at the City of Ilagan Sports Complex, afternoon of April 24.
Introduced by the Regional Director Florante E Vergara, the senator’s representative highlighted these qualities as the same that will make the athletes succeed over battles in life
Acedillo also underscored the lessons in life that can be learned from the sports activity
“Sa laro gaya ng sa buhay, tama ang pagbangon mo kung ikaw ay nadapa pero mas tama ito lalo kung tinulungan mo ang kapwa mo na bumangon sa pagkadapa nila,” the chief of staff added
Meanwhile, Vice President and concurrent DepEd Secretary Sarah Z Duterte-Carpio expressed her congratulatory greetings through a video recorded speech
Palarong Pambansa athlete Justin Lexis P Aglugub and Dr Joselito L Narag led the Oath of Amateurism and Oath of Technical Officials, respectively
After the lighting of the friendship urn, the delegation banners were hoisted by the Philippine National Police which signaled Director Vergara to officially declare the opening of the regional sports event
At the outset, host Schools
Division Superintendent Dr Eduardo C Escorpiso Jr. and Ilagan City Mayor Jose Marie L Diaz expressed their welcome messages Also, OIC-Assistant Regional Director Orlando E Manuel affirmed in his opening remarks that the best athletes would be selected for the Cagayan Valley to excel in the
AS ONE
The fight for regional sports supremacy in sports is underway. Vying for the overall championship are the 9 Schools Divisions of Cagayan Valley. The competition may be friendly, but nonetheless, intense.
Team Nueva Vizcaya has undergone a month-long intensive training in preparation for the fierce battles ahead.
The athletes have sweat, cried and perhaps even bled during the rigorous but ultimately rewarding training sessions
They had to juggle practice sessions with academic instruction from their coaches No stone was left unturned, no detail was missed and no expense was spared in the pursuit of excellence in sports.
Indeed, the athletes have been given all the support they need to outclass their respective opponents The collective hope is for every Vizcayano athlete to rise head and shoulders above everyone else However, in a larger sense, the goal of the regional sports meet is not to stoke unhealthy rivalry among the 9 divisions
The desired outcome is not for athletes to be mired in bitter clashes with each other, but rather to pick the best and brightest to represent Cagayan Valley in the upcoming Palarong Pambansa.
The passion, the desire and the hunger to win must and should always be fueled by the desire to be an integral part of the Region 2 contingent in the national games.
The bigger picture is to see the varied colors that symbolize each division meld into the unified hue of Region 2. The louder soundtrack is for every athlete to march to the hymn of Cagayan Valley.
The best outcome is to see the athletes of Region 2 at the top of every podium of the 2023 Palarong Pambansa
Real
As the ringing stops, it marks another day of heart-pounding and sweat-inducing training
Seven o'clock in the morning, the usual morning line-up Waking up, getting ready, train, and study-- a cycle an athlete cannot escape Though this may seem as an exhausting circle of routines, the fact still remains that this is how one improves performance in terms of brains and physique
It is, however, undeniable that it takes cooperation from the whole village to properly and effectively train an athlete From coaches to co-coaches, from trainers to parents, from teachers to peers and from school administrators to local government units
In line with supporting Vizcayano athletes, the PLGU, under the helm of Gov Carlos Padilla, alloted 12 million pesos as funding for the month-long training in preparation for the 2023 CAVRAA Meet on April 23 to 28 in Ilagan City
Allocating financial aid for sports provisions and other miscellaneous, and promising incentives for future medalists are just a few ways of showing support for the student-athletes
While this may be a motivation for some of our athletes, they are still expected to fulfill their academic duties and responsibilities The big question is; will students be able to balance sports with academics? Can they excel in both? Be a failure in both? Or will they favor one and sacrifice the other?
Dr Melany M Asuncion, School Governance and Operations Division -Education Program Supervisor in-charge of Sports divulged that printed modules were utilized to offset the disruption of classes during the inhouse training
It is truly a sacrifice for athletes to be in competition. They need to tread carefully and strike a balance between sports and academics, between grades and scores and between fouling out or dropping out
But when the final buzzer sounds, the Vizcayano athletes can do both and do them excellently

When the Cheer Ceases
RHEANEL E. SARMIENTO Associate Editor
An athlete’s feat can be summed-up with the Bible lines in Galatians 6:9, “…YOU WILL REAP WHAT YOU SOW…”
The month-long of sowing, the day of reaping comes to bear as the athletes set foot on the playing arena.
After the hundreds of trials the athletes have trekked to master their crafts, the body cramps that permeated every bone and muscle of their body and after all the blood, sweat and tears they have shed to harness skills, comes the day of reckoning as their eyes begin to narrow down and focus their sight on the reward for everything they have gone through
But in a sense, what really matters are not the golds grabbed at the zenith, but what is left when the crowd’s deafening cheer ceases
Of the life-long lessons learned, the most valuable thing for a player to embrace is to be emotionally firm and grounded, after all, life is a game.
The essence of what athletes gain from the mental strength that they build from playing and participating in sports is realized only after they finally retire their uniforms and hang the sports jackets for good
The time spent training, staying focused on their goals, maintaining school work and doing various things one after the other sharpen mental strength; something that can be used in later life in finding balance in every circumstances met
Sports prepares athletes to be better persons. Setting a playing ground is like staging a scene they will experience in real life. They learn how to handle victory as well as disappointment, show humility and magnanimity and work either as an individual or team player
When the buzzer goes off, different doors open for the persevering athletes Once they are released and set to conquer their own paths, they are already equipped with the ability to influence the next generation of players
With all that I have written in the past years as a Novozine sports writer, games and seasons always come to an end, but what I learned stays with me forever
