The increase in diabetes is one of today’s major health challenges, a global emergency in slow motion. Worldwide, 415 million people are living with diabetes.1 Without concerted action, it is estimated that this will climb to 642 million by 2040.1 Today, more than half of the world’s population lives in urban areas2 and so do two-thirds of all people with diabetes.1 That makes cities an important focal point for tackling diabetes. However, there is a need to better understand what drives urban diabetes.
