TRIBUTE TO AN AMAZING FRIEND AND PARTNER
To Daniel and the Penske Team: A Heartfelt Thank You
November 5, 2021, was the day our incredible journey began. I walked into Porsche, confident and determined, to pitch my new magazine, McLean Living. You said "NO" to advertising, but little did we know that "NO" would blossom into an amazing partnership and beautiful friendship.
Our initial meetings were a bit weird, mixing business and pleasure. You thought I had a crush on you... yeah, right, you wish! (I'd better not comment). But in all seriousness, our partnership has created something truly special. By involving the community in everything that we do, we've been able to make a real impact. And despite our constant debating (which can be intimidating to our party partners at first!), we've managed to create a sense of family among our collaborators. They know that with us, it's all about heart, not perfection.
Our Porsche parties have become the talk of the town, and I'm thrilled to have the Penske brand as a sponsor. Your commitment to community and women-owned businesses inspires everyone. Daniel, you're more than a client, colleague, or mentor – you're a true friend, a partner in crime, and a brother. Your leadership shines through in how you uplift your team, creating exceptional experiences at Porsche and now Mercedes.
Together, we've made a di erence by celebrating remarkable women and raising funds for multiple causes through our Driven Women parties, amazing fashion show, and masquerade ball. Your support has empowered McLean Living to thrive, and I'm forever grateful.
To our readers, I highly recommend a visit to Mercedes, Porsche, or Audi in Tysons to experience the Penske di erence! You'll be treated like family, whether you buy a car or not – or just stop by for the free snacks, co ee, and the infinite Diet Cokes that I've had without buying a car, lol! Daniel, Sam, Neal, and their teams' kindness and dedication are contagious, making everyone feel welcome and valued.
Thank you, Penske, for all your support to your communities. Here's to many more adventures together!
Love,
P.S. Of course, if you look to your left, you would find that in the end he did sponsor our magazine and did buy the said ad...THE END.

From a young age, Sam Alimi was captivated by automobiles— not just as machines, but as symbols of engineering excellence and emotional appeal. That passion, combined with his sharp analytical mindset, has fueled his rise as a leader in the luxury automotive industry.
Alimi holds a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Management Information Systems (MIS) from George Mason University, a degree that has honed his problem-solving skills and strategic thinking—both instrumental in his success. Each morning, Alimi steps into the dealership driven by a commitment to excellence. “I’m inspired by the thrill of delivering unparalleled customer experiences, leading a high-performing team, and setting new benchmarks in the industry,” he explains. To him, the luxury automotive sector is not just about selling cars—it’s about crafting a lifestyle, blending innovation, service, and sophistication to captivate clients.
That dedication has paid o . In 2024, Audi Tysons Corner earned two prestigious distinctions: Automotive News' "Best Dealerships to Work For" and the J.D. Power Dealer
of Excellence Award—an honor bestowed upon only 17 dealerships nationwide out of 305 Audi stores. They were also ranked as the #1 overall Best Dealership to Work For by Automotive News in 2024. These accolades are a testament to Alimi’s leadership and his unwavering commitment to delivering a world-class dealership experience.

Like any seasoned leader, Alimi has faced challenges—one of the biggest being employee retention in an industry notorious for high turnover. “The automotive industry is known for high attrition, but we’ve achieved an industryleading 9% turnover rate,” he notes. By fostering a culture of trust, recognition, and career growth, he ensures that employees feel valued, not just as workers, but as integral members of a thriving organization.
Beyond business, Alimi is committed to giving back to the community. Whether through education, environmental e orts, or mentorship programs, he ensures that the dealership plays a meaningful role in the community.
Great leaders learn from the best, and Alimi is no exception. He credits books like "Good to Great" by Jim Collins and "Extreme Ownership" by Jocko Willink for shaping his leadership approach. “These books emphasize accountability, adaptability, and the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people,” he shares.
If given the chance to advise his younger self, Alimi would o er this wisdom:
“Be patient but stay relentless. Success isn’t overnight, and challenges are part of the journey. Surround yourself with the best people, focus on continuous learning, and never let short-term setbacks define your long-term vision.”
Through it all, Alimi remains steadfast in his philosophy: “Excellence is not an act, but a habit.”

NEAL RIFE
© Best Version Media
Luxury. Performance. Precision. These are the defining elements of Porsche, a brand synonymous with automotive excellence. Neal Rife, a leader who evolved from a passionate race car enthusiast to General Manager of one of the region’s most prestigious dealerships, exemplifies dedication and success.
For Neal, cars were more than just machines—they were a calling. His path into the automotive world began in high school, spending summers as a porter at a Volkswagen dealership in Northern Virginia. This early exposure set the stage for a career spanning nearly two decades. Seventeen years later, Neal’s unwavering commitment to the industry led him to Porsche Tysons Corner, where he started as Service Director in January 2023. His leadership and vision quickly propelled him forward, and in October 2024, he assumed the role of General Manager. His impressive rise within the Penske Automotive Group is a testament to his dedication, drive, and deep understanding of the luxury automotive market. A reflection of his achievements, he was named one of Automotive News’s 40 Under 40 honorees in 2024, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the industry.
One of the most rewarding aspects of Neal’s career is witnessing the growth of his team. “Seeing my sta develop their skills and thrive in their roles is incredibly fulfilling,” he says. Beyond that, the ever-evolving nature of the
automotive world keeps him motivated. Finding new ways to drive loyalty and revenue is a challenge he embraces wholeheartedly.
His leadership philosophy is rooted in a relentless pursuit of excellence. “My ‘why’ is bringing out the best in every employee and ensuring that every aspect of our business meets the highest standard,” Neal explains. This commitment to growth and innovation was tested in one of the biggest challenges of his career—launching a brand-new dealership from the ground up in late 2019, just before the COVID-19 pandemic. Tasked with everything from construction decisions to building a team from scratch, Neal overcame these challenges through strategic recruitment, aggressive marketing, and community engagement. By organizing car shows and securing fleet accounts, he successfully established a thriving business in uncertain times.
Leadership is a skill honed through experience and inspiration. Neal credits Steven Bartlett’s The Diary of a CEO podcast as a significant influence, valuing its modern, people-centric leadership approach. His competitive mindset, shaped by childhood experiences racing go-karts, has played a crucial role in his career. “Growing up as a race fan and racing go-karts taught me the importance of strategy and consistency,” he recalls. But above all, his grandfather remains his greatest role model, instilling in him the values of integrity and a strong work ethic.
Beyond business, Neal and his team actively engage with the local community, particularly through their support of the March of Dimes charity. “Giving back is personal to me,” he shares. “Two of my children, twins, were born prematurely at 24 weeks. That experience has made our involvement with the March of Dimes even more meaningful.” The dealership holds fundraisers and participates in the March for Babies walk in D.C., reinforcing its commitment to making a di erence beyond the showroom.
When asked what advice he would give his younger self, Neal emphasizes the importance of seizing opportunities and taking risks early on. He also recognizes the challenges of balancing a demanding career with personal life, prioritizing time with his family and actively participating in his children’s sports activities.
Looking ahead, Neal remains focused on expanding Porsche Tysons Corner’s business, particularly in fixed operations. He is also deeply committed to supporting local automotive tech programs, ensuring the next generation of talent is nurtured and developed.
Neal’s philosophy: Speed of the leader, speed of the team.

DANIEL RODRIGUEZ
At the helm of Mercedes-Benz Tysons Corner, Daniel Rodriguez exemplifies what dedication, resilience, and vision can achieve. As the dealership’s General Manager, he brings a wealth of experience and a deep-rooted passion for helping others—whether guiding customers to their perfect vehicle or mentoring employees in their professional growth.
Daniel’s academic background is as diverse as it is impressive. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Florida, and a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from George Mason University. This unique combination has shaped his strategic and analytical approach, equipping him with the skills necessary to navigate the competitive luxury automotive industry.
Daniel’s passion for the automotive world is driven by a relentless pursuit of excellence. His career began in 2000 when he joined Braman BMW as a Service Advisor. Through hard work and unwavering determination, he quickly ascended the ranks.
By 2021, he stepped into the role of General Manager at Porsche Tysons Corner—a defining moment in his career. At the time, the dealership was struggling with underperformance and a poor workplace culture.
Recognizing the need for a turnaround, Daniel implemented a leadership strategy rooted in teambuilding, accountability, and a commitment to excellence. Inspired by the teachings of renowned authors such as Robert Greene, Malcolm Gladwell, and John Maxwell— whose books Mastery, The 48 Laws of Power, and The Laws of Human Nature shaped his leadership philosophy—he transformed the dealership into one of the top-performing Porsche locations in the country.
But for Daniel, success is about continuous growth. In October 2024, he embraced a new challenge—leading Mercedes-Benz Tysons Corner into its next era of excellence.
His journey, however, hasn’t been without obstacles. Early in his career, he faced a defining setback when he was entrusted with managing a large operation but struggled to connect with his team. “My energy was self-centered, and that led to failure,” he reflects. “But hitting rock bottom taught me humility and accountability.” This experience reshaped his leadership style, turning him into a leader who prioritizes teamwork, motivation, and shared success.
For Daniel, success isn’t just about sales figures— it’s about making a di erence. Under his leadership, Mercedes-Benz Tysons Corner actively supports numerous charitable initiatives, including Paralyzed Veterans of America, March of Dimes, and Educate Fairfax. He is also passionate about bridging the gap between local schools and the automotive industry. The dealership currently hosts interns from three Fairfax County high schools, providing students with hands-on experience and valuable career insights.
As he settles into his new role, Daniel has ambitious plans for Mercedes-Benz Tysons Corner, including strengthening the dealership’s partnerships with Fairfax County Public Schools to create more opportunities for students interested in automotive careers.
When asked about the key to his success, Daniel keeps it simple: “Be kind, generous, and empathetic, and you’ll get the best out of your team.”

Building a Beautiful Smile: the Importance of Early Orthodontic Treatment

By NEFELI VASILAKOU, DDS, MSc – Orthodontist at Island Dentistry

A healthy, confident smile is a valuable asset. For many children, achieving that smile starts with early orthodontic treatment, also known as Phase I. Parents are often wondering, "Why is orthodontic treatment important at an early age when my child doesn’t have all their adult teeth yet?" Here is why early interceptive treatment is crucial for developing a healthy smile and who can benefit from it.
Phase I usually starts between ages 6 to 10 years. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that all children be screened by an orthodontist at the age of 7. At this stage, children still have some of their baby teeth, while their permanent teeth are starting to erupt. This mix of teeth allows orthodontists to address certain developmental issues early on, creating a more favorable environment for the permanent teeth to come in. Also at this young age, the jaws are still developing, and an intervention can result in a true orthopedic change.
CONDITIONS OFTEN EVALUATED BY THE ORTHODONTIST
Dental crowding: Sometimes there is not enough room for permanent teeth to erupt properly. Phase I treatment can help create space by widening the upper jaw or guiding the eruption of teeth. This can prevent crowding and impaction, reducing the need for extractions in the future.
Early or late loss of baby teeth: This can disrupt the normal eruption pattern of permanent teeth. Interceptive treatment could help by creating or maintaining the space for the permanent teeth or by removing baby teeth in a timely manner to guide the permanent teeth into the dental arch.
Incorrect bite: One of the most common problems seen in young kids is a narrow or small upper jaw that results in the upper posterior or anterior teeth biting inside the lower teeth. These conditions are known as a crossbite or an underbite, respectively. It is crucial to detect this problem when the child is still developing, as this is the best time to use an expander. An expander is a very common dental appliance that, if used at the right age, can orthopedically widen the upper jaw. Crossbites left untreated can a ect chewing, dental health, facial symmetry, and, on some occasions, breathing.
In a nutshell, Phase I treatment focuses on correcting problems that, if left untreated, could become more severe and complex to fix later. Think of it as laying the foundation for a strong and healthy smile. It can often minimize the extent and duration of future orthodontic treatment and prevent the need for more invasive procedures, like extractions and jaw surgery, later in life. It can also improve the appearance of the smile, boosting children's confidence during their formative years.
Not every child needs Phase I treatment. At Island Children's Dentistry, we always conduct a thorough examination to address the orthodontic needs of your child in the most personalized way. If Phase I is recommended, we use custom-designed appliances, braces, and even Invisalign, giving our little patients the best experience. Schedule a consultation to find out if your child is a candidate for early orthodontic treatment.

Harmful oral habits: Thumb sucking or tongue thrusting are common habits often persisting after the permanent teeth start to erupt. They can result in bite changes, like crossbites or open bites, if they are not addressed early. In these cases, the Orthodontist may suggest custom-made appliances that can help the child break the habit and allow normal development of the jaws and teeth.

McLean’s TOPSoccer Program
By SOFIA ROMAN | Photos by SARA HARRIS
Soccer is more than just a game—it’s a universal language that brings people together, builds confidence, and fosters teamwork. In McLean, the TOPSoccer program is doing just that, creating an inclusive environment where children and adults with intellectual, emotional, or physical disabilities can experience the joy of the game.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE
BRINGING SOCCER TO EVERYONE

TOPSoccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer) is a national initiative developed by US Youth Soccer that provides individuals with diverse abilities the opportunity to play soccer in a structured, supportive, and fun environment. The McLean TOPSoccer program, a iliated with McLean Youth Soccer (MYS), relaunched in Spring 2023 and has since grown into a thriving, year-round program that welcomes players of all ages and skill levels— completely free of charge
“At TOPSoccer, every child who wishes to play soccer deserves the right to participate,” says the program’s organizer. “We strive to make sure every athlete, regardless of their abilities, feels welcomed, engaged, and empowered.”
One of the most distinctive features of TOPSoccer is the Buddy system. Each athlete is paired with a volunteer buddy, typically a little older and neurotypical, who works with them throughout the season. These Buddies provide encouragement, ensure safety, and foster an environment of trust and confidence. As a result, strong interpersonal bonds are formed, helping players develop not just soccer skills but also social and teamwork abilities that extend beyond the field.
THE IMPACT BEYOND THE GAME
The impact of TOPSoccer reaches far beyond the game itself. The program provides numerous benefits for its participants, including:
• Social Skills – Players interact with their Buddy and fellow athletes in a fun, group setting, learning important social behaviors.
• Teamwork—Players build trust and learn to rely on others through soccer activities and games.
• Perseverance—While some activities may present challenges, players are encouraged to keep trying and overcome obstacles.
• Confidence—Success on the field translates to confidence in everyday life, helping players achieve personal growth in multiple ways.
A GROWING COMMUNITY IMPACT
At its core, McLean’s TOPSoccer program is about inclusion, empowerment, and community. It’s a place where every player has the chance to shine, every goal is celebrated, and every connection made on the field becomes a lifelong memory.
Each week, 5-10 athletes participate in TOPSoccer, supported by a dedicated team of 10-15 Buddies who volunteer their time to make a di erence. But the real impact is felt in the community, as families see their children thrive in ways they never imagined.
One parent shares, "TOPSoccer has been life-changing for our child. The encouragement and structure of the program

have helped build confidence and social skills, and seeing the joy on their face each week is priceless."
Another parent expresses gratitude for the Buddy system: "Our son has formed a genuine friendship with his Buddy. The relationship extends beyond soccer, and it's heartwarming to see that kind of connection."
Through programs like these, McLean continues to uphold its commitment to community enrichment— one goal at a time.
THE HEART BEHIND THE PROGRAM: TRISHA KNISELY
When Trisha Knisely first learned about the US Youth Soccer TOPSoccer program, she knew she had to be part of it. Combining her two passions—soccer and helping others—she played a key role in relaunching the program in McLean. Her dedication and impact led to her nomination for the 2023 US Youth Soccer TOPSoccer Coach of the Year.

(we do more than play soccer and this is a “come when you can” program!) at no cost. More information is available at www.mcleansoccer.
If you have any questions, please email

Beyond the soccer field, Trisha has always been deeply involved in community service. She has volunteered with the Lost Dog & Cat Rescue in Falls Church, has helped distribute food to those in need, and contributes to Christmas toy drives and school supply collections. Her passion for giving back is evident in everything she does, making her a true leader and role model in the community.
To expand the reach of TOPSoccer, Trisha has actively connected with local schools and organizations that support individuals with developmental disabilities. Before taking on her role with TOPSoccer, she spent five years as a recreational soccer coach and remains a devoted soccer enthusiast, cheering on her three children as they play at various levels.
Her dedication goes beyond the scheduled sessions— she loves seeing her athletes and volunteers outside of practice, whether at church or school functions. "It’s been fun building this community and it makes me happy to see these kids smile." Trisha shares.

Lasers in Skincare: The Gold Standard for Radiant Skin
BY SONA SUT MA – Derma Care
Laser treatments have revolutionized skincare, o ering targeted solutions for concerns like acne scars, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, and overall skin rejuvenation By harnessing light energy, lasers stimulate collagen production, resurface damaged skin, and promote a smoother, more even complexion.
There are two main categories: ablative and non-ablative lasers. Ablative lasers, such as CO2 and Erbium, work by removing outer layers of skin to encourage fresh cell turnover, making them ideal for deep wrinkles and scarring. Nonablative options, like Fraxel and IPL, penetrate beneath the surface to target pigmentation, redness, and fine lines without significant downtime.
Choosing the right laser depends on your skin type, concerns, and downtime tolerance. While lasers can deliver incredible results, they require expert handling—always seek a licensed and experienced provider. Additionally, post-treatment care is crucial; SPF becomes non-negotiable, as treated skin is more sensitive to UV damage.
Lasers are a game-changer, but they’re not one-size-fits-

The Power of Play-Based Learning in Early Childhood Education
By KIM TODD, Trinity Preschool of McLean
Far from being simply a fun break from structured activities, play is an essential component of a child's growth. Play-based learning at home and at school helps children engage with the world around them, develop critical thinking skills, and nurture social and emotional intelligence.
At its core, play-based learning encourages children to explore, experiment, and discover in a hands-on way by interacting with their environment and each other. Whether building with blocks, engaging in pretend play, or experimenting with art materials, children develop a wide range of skills in an organic, personalized way.
Through creative play, children improve their problemsolving skills, enhance their imagination, and develop critical thinking abilities. Socially, play encourages cooperation, empathy, and communication as children engage with their peers in shared activities. Emotionally, play provides a safe space for children to express themselves, build confidence, and learn to manage their feelings.
For example, a simple activity like playing with a set of toy cars can help a child develop spatial awareness, hand-eye coordination, and basic math skills as they count, sort, or measure. Similarly, role-playing games help children understand di erent perspectives and practice realworld scenarios, such as negotiating and sharing. These experiences lay the foundation for lifelong skills that go beyond academic learning.
Play-based learning can be used across various settings, from classrooms to home environments, making it an accessible and inclusive approach. Teachers and families play critical roles in supporting play-based learning. Instead of directing every activity, they guide children’s exploration

by providing openended resources and asking thoughtprovoking questions that encourage deeper thinking. This balance between freedom and guidance helps children develop a love for learning and fosters their natural curiosity.
As more research highlights the importance of play in early childhood development, it is becoming increasingly evident that play-based learning is not just an educational trend but a crucial component of a child’s journey to becoming a well-rounded individual. Integrating play into early childhood education helps children develop a strong foundation for future learning, paving the way for a lifetime of curiosity, discovery, and growth. Play is much more than a break from structured lessons—it is a powerful tool for developing the skills children need to thrive in the world around them.
How do I know my child is learning?
You will notice an improvement in your child's problemsolving skills, learning behaviors, attitude towards school, and approach to other situations. In addition, teachers can share observations and portfolios to demonstrate a child’s progress over time.
Will my child be ready for kindergarten?
Children who have experienced a play-based curriculum are enthusiastic learners and have advanced socialemotional skills. They are confident, curious problemsolvers. These children will have all the skills necessary to be ready to learn and take on new challenges that come with starting kindergarten.

At Home Safe and Sound

By STEPHANIE LAWRENCE Vinson Hall Retirement Community
Do you have a loved one who is showing signs of memory loss? Do they forget words or repeat the same question several times in the same conversation, or maybe they do not recognize their grandchildren or a family pet? Perhaps your loved one is dealing with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia that robs them of the ability to perform basic tasks or have a simple conversation. They may have negative behaviors that are hard to manage—like getting agitated late in the day, or wandering out of the house, or being unable to maintain their personal hygiene. If so, you may be wondering about potential solutions for their safety and care, one of which is a memory care community.
Memory care communities o er specialized care for those living with Alzheimer’s or other types of dementia. The Sylvestery, the memory care neighborhood at Vinson Hall Retirement Community (VHRC), is on Kirby Road nestled among the trees right in McLean. The Sylvestery features an award-winning architectural design with interior courtyards and connecting hallways. This unique design not only allows the building’s private suites and common spaces to fill with natural light, but it also gives residents who may be prone to wander a place to move about freely and safely.
You do not have to already be a resident of Vinson Hall Retirement Community to live at The Sylvestery. So when is the right time to move to a memory care community? For those managing the care of someone with dementia, it can be challenging and physically exhausting. When you are making the decision about your loved one’s care, consider their safety as well as your own. As the caregiver, are you getting a good night’s sleep—or are you up worrying that your loved one will wander from the house in the middle of the night? When you no longer have the endurance to manage all the physical and cognitive changes your loved one is experiencing, or when their negative behaviors become overwhelming, it is time to seek other options.
At The Sylvestery, our sta are trained to care and communicate with individuals who have dementia. They know how to manage the negative behaviors that are often presented. Our families praise the Sylvestery sta for being “positive, caring, and supportive” of our residents and for the “empathy and understanding” they show when caring for them. When your family member is cared for at The Sylvestery, you can once again focus on being a loved one to them, rather than a caregiver. You can regain peace of mind knowing that you made the best decision for them.

Antiques for Small Spaces
JONI FOERTER Owner Furniture Rescue
Say the word “antique,” and our minds often jump to something grand and imposing, a double-door armoire or a twelve-seat dining table. But palatially sized pieces are far from your only options. If you’re short on space, there’s no reason to rule antiques out. At The Furniture Rescue, we can help make tracking down petite pieces easier. We get in some fantastic small-scale furniture worth putting on your wish list.
Small spaces sometimes call for niche pieces, like a two-seat bistro table, ladder-style bookcase, or a drinks/martini table. While antique versions aren’t always available, there’s no rule against reimagining an antique to fulfill your needs. Consider using an antique center table or drop-leaf table as a two-seater dining table. Try an antique plant or candle stand as a drinks/martini table. With its upright back and thin profile, an antique Chippendale sofa can be reimagined as banquette seating on one side of a modern dining table. Or use a pew bench for the role of the banquette seating. Looking for a smaller co ee table? Try two antique stools or cut down the legs of a taller piece. If an antique textbook is not what you’re interested in, you know the type: brown wood, curvy legs, fancy woodwork. There are other options for space-saving designs to consider. Look for pieces that incorporate spatially conscientious details like wall mounts, drop leaves, and floating shelves.
When you are working with a small space, what you choose to pair with your antiques is almost as important as what antiques you select. In space-squeezed quarters, using too much dark, heavy furniture can visually close things in. To prevent your space from feeling too heavy, try pairing your antique furniture with slim modern pieces. Love your antique pedestal dining table, then pair it with some Ghost Chairs. They’re more modern but take their cues from classical designs. Opting for a more colorful antique, a painted piece will mix more seamlessly with modern furniture’s vibrant finishes.
Despite living in a small space, sometimes oversized antiques choose you. Whether it be a piano passed down from a relative or a street corner freebie that was simply too good to pass up, occasionally we find ourselves saddled with a more sizable piece than we bargained for. If you can relate, don’t panic. With a little

finessing, large antiques can be recast as more functional pieces. For instance, try treating an antique piano more like a console. Outfitting it with a vase, candlesticks, and a decorative bowl can tone down its commanding presence. Topping it with art and outfitting it with a brightly upholstered chair or bench can mu le its monumental qualities even more. Take a similar approach to a china cabinet. Remove its doors to make it feel more visually lightweight and create an accessible, open bookcase. Or take the top hutch o the base, and by adding legs, you have display or storage space, and the bottom bu et can be used separately.
Antiques that can swing double duty are well suited for small spaces. A secretary desk is a smart choice in small bedrooms requiring both storage and workspace. Bottom drawers can be allocated to sweaters and jean storage, while the drop leaf can be unfolded to accommodate a laptop. A secretary with a flat top (rather than an enclosed hutch) can also be used to pedestal a TV, if needed. In a kid’s room, try using an antique school desk as a nightstand. This will function beautifully as a bedside companion day-to-day but can be transformed into a workspace whenever needed. A stately Federal desk can also function as a bu et in a dining room or a bar in a living room.
Just because you’re not living in a large space, don’t rule out an antique china cabinet. It is possible to find small-scale versions of traditionally large antiques. A curio cabinet is similar to a china cabinet but often comes in small-scale sizes. Drop-leaf tables, which feature hinged drop panels on either side, can also be reimagined as small dining tables. The demilune is essentially a small-scale console masquerading as a table. A half-circle-shaped top set atop two or four legs makes it easily distinguishable, as does its taller-than-average height. Most demi-lunes have a depth between 10” and 16,” meaning they can go just about anywhere. Have an especially narrow hallway or entryway or smaller bedroom? A demilune is a great option.
No matter your style or the size of your living space, upcycling vintage solid hardwood furniture and wonderful old antiques are not going out of style—they simply need to be restyled.

Finding the Right Pet Care for Spring Break: What to Ask Before You Book

By ANNIE DINEEN Owner of Fetch & Favor

Spring break is coming up, and while you're planning your trip, your pet's care should be just as carefully considered. Whether you're choosing in-home pet sitting or boarding, making the right choice ensures your pet is safe, comfortable, and well-cared for while you're away. At Fetch & Favor, we always encourage pet parents to ask the right questions to ensure the best possible fit for your pet and the most relaxed experience for you.
1. KNOW YOUR PET’S NEEDS
Every pet is different! Some pets thrive in a boarding environment with lots of activity, while others do best at home with a sitter. Consider:
Does your pet get anxious in new places?
Do they need medication or specialized care?
Are they comfortable around other animals?
Do they have a strict feeding or bathroom schedule?
For pets who like their routine, an in-home sitter can keep to their current schedule and preferences. If your pet enjoys social time, a reputable boarding facility may work well.
2. ASK ABOUT EXPERIENCE AND POLICIES
Every pet care provider has different ways they structure their services. At Fetch & Favor, we seek to replicate as closely as possible your pet's existing routine and preferences in your home but do not board or walk dogs in a group with other dogs, for example. Things to ask:
For sitters: Do you have experience reading pet body language? How much time will you be able to spend with my pet, and how closely will you be able to keep to their current routine? Do you have a plan B if there are changes to my schedule or yours?
For boarding: What's the daily routine? How often do pets get exercise? How are emergencies handled? What kind of updates should I expect to get?
3. CHECK FOR INSURANCE AND SAFETY MEASURES
Both professional sitters and reputable boarding facilities should have insurance and protocols in place. Ask about:
Liability coverage in case of accidents
Emergency vet procedures
How they handle unexpected changes in your travel plans
For sitters, how they handle emergencies in their own lives that might impede their ability to complete their care of your pet
What their procedure is for weather emergencies
A good provider will have clear answers and a plan for anything that might come up.
4. COMMUNICATION IS KEY
6. READ REVIEWS & ASK FOR REFERENCES
Online reviews and referrals from other pet parents can tell you a lot. Look for consistency in positive experiences—reliable care providers should have a track record of happy clients. Professional organizations like Pet Sitters International and the National Association of Pet Sitters are a great resource for finding care providers in your area.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Choosing pet care isn't just about convenience—it's about making sure your pet is happy, safe, and stress-free while you're gone and allowing you to travel without worrying about their well-being! Whether you choose in-home sitting or boarding, ask the right questions to find the best fit. And of course, if you're looking for personalized care to any level, Fetch & Favor would love to help!

When you're away, you'll want updates on your pet. Ask if the sitter or boarding facility sends photos, texts, or daily reports. Some boarding facilities also have live streams that you can tune into to check on your pet.
5. DO A MEET-AND-GREET OR TOUR THE FACILITY
Before committing, set up a meeting with the sitter or tour the boarding facility. Pay attention to how they interact with your pet and how your pet responds to them. Notice whether they welcome lots of questions and notes as helpful information or seem not to listen or think they have a better sense of how to care for your pet. If something feels off, trust your instincts and keep looking.

A Guide to Couples Coaching
By YOUSOF FARYAR – Fitness Lab VA, Transformation Coach
Counseling couples is a powerful way to foster deeper connection and happiness in relationships. As a coach, I, Yousof, work with couples to address underlying issues, improve communication, and develop tools to strengthen their bond. A key aspect of coaching is helping partners understand each other's needs and emotions by creating a safe space for open and honest discussions. This can lead to greater empathy and a deeper sense of understanding, reducing misunderstandings and conflicts. Couples coaching also encourages individuals to explore their relationship patterns and behaviors. By identifying negative cycles, I guide couples in creating healthier interactions. For example, I might work with partners on active

listening skills, teaching them to truly hear each other and validate their feelings. Additionally, coaching can address emotional intimacy, guiding couples to reignite the passion that may have faded over time.

Ultimately, the goal of couples coaching is to empower partners to build a more fulfilling life together. By fostering mutual respect, trust, and understanding, coaching can help couples navigate challenges and create a lasting, loving connection that enhances their overall well-being. With consistent e ort and my guidance, couples can achieve a more harmonious and joyful relationship. For more information, follow us on social media @youso or email us at yousof@fitlab.com.

Vernon Davis Scores Big in Comedy with New Mockumentary 'Match Point'
By CHARLIE GALLEGOS
McLean’s own Vernon Davis, former NFL star and Super Bowl champion, is making waves in the entertainment world once again—this time, with his comedic chops. Featured on February's cover, Davis is stepping into a new role in Match Point, a fresh and irreverent mockumentary set to premiere on Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime Video on February 11, 2025.
Directed by Sports Emmynominated filmmaker Joslyn Rose Lyons (Stand - Showtime Sports/ Paramount Plus), Match Point takes audiences behind the scenes of a chaotic, unfiltered podcast run by two former professional tennis players—played by Davis and fellow Super Bowl champion Omar Bolden (Nice & Neat). The duo, navigating the unpredictable world of podcasting, finds themselves entangled in the antics of a highstrung producer (Ashley Haas) and a ratings-obsessed talent booker (Rob Gordon), all while dealing with wildly eccentric guests. The show hilariously explores the absurdity of the entertainment industry and the art of “failing upwards.”
Davis, who has been steadily growing his presence in Hollywood with roles in films like Please Don’t
Feed the Children, also serves as an executive producer for Match Point, joining an accomplished team that includes Lyons, Johanna Saldaña (Blindspotting), and Dominique Mouton (The Lower Bottoms).
“My vision was to create a project that not only entertains but also pushes the boundaries of storytelling—blending mockumentary with new media and breaking the fourth wall,” said Lyons. “As artists, we embrace the freedom of expression, where comedy uncovers deeper meaning and invites audiences to find light in the most unexpected places.”

For Davis, this series is another exciting chapter in his post-NFL career, proving his versatility and passion for entertainment. “I’m excited about the unique blend of comedy and mockumentary in this project—it’s a fresh take on podcasting like you’ve never seen before,” he said. “Bringing all of us together in this format creates a oneof-a-kind experience, and I can’t wait for viewers to enjoy it.”
The series has already received accolades, winning awards at the London Global Film Festival and the New York International Film Awards, and earning o icial selections at the Cal Film Festival and IndieX Film Fest. With Match Point, Davis continues to redefine his career, proving that his winning streak extends well beyond the football field.
Catch the premiere of Match Point on Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime Video starting February 11. For McLean residents, this is a must-watch, as one of our own brings another champion performance to the screen.
