A Whale of a Good Time

here’s nothing quite as exhilarating as seeing a whale breach. And springtime, when the mammals are migrating close to shore, offers a prime opportunity to catch such a site. Try your luck during the Mendocino Whale Festival March 3–4. Walk amidst the coastal views of the Headlands State Park in Mendocino, and then refresh yourself with chowder and some adult beverages. On March 3, 11 a.m.–1 p.m., at Crown Hall in Mendocino, taste chowder for $10 and sample craft brews from the North Coast Brewing Company for $5. Afterward, grab a glass at the Ford House Museum and sample wine at stops throughout the village of Mendocino, 1–4 p.m., for $35–$40. Tickets for all events may be purchased at brownpapertickets. com. Or try mendocinocoast.com/whale-home, where you can also find out about the Little River Whale Festival, March 9–12, and the Fort Bragg Whale Festival, March 17–18. ¶

Ready for Scout Carnival

he Boy Scouts isn’t just about camping in the woods; it’s also about creating community and helping boys thrive. Support its work—and have a rollicking good time, too—at the Scout Carnival. Kids can listen to a DJ, mess around in a bouncy house, and play games, including Wheel-O-Prizes, Plinko, Chicken Fling, and many more. When stomachs growl, nosh on fun food, such as hot dogs, chili, nachos, cotton candy, popcorn, and snow cones. It all happens on March 10, noon–5 p.m., at Fritch Hall at the Lake County Fairgrounds in Lakeport. Food and activities require “script tickets,” which are 5 for $1. Purchase includes entry into a raffle for a used car, a new recliner, photo art, and other prizes. Get tickets from a local scout, go to Tutti Fruitti in Lakeport, or call or text 245-3672. ¶
