Lockdown has felt like our lives have been on pause but that’s certainly not been the case when it comes to the changing face of our city – there’s a huge amount to be excited about which is going to have a transformative effect on the city, not only on how we look, but on jobs and opportunities for Nottingham people.

Summer Events Current uncertainty means we may have lost some of our bigger events like Splendour and Riverside Festival but as things begin to open up more, we have been able to plan for lots of smaller-scale events in the city. Some are brand new and some are old favourites, and there’s a mix of free and ticketed events.

What is guaranteed is that there is something for everybody to enjoy.

British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships 20-25 July, Nottingham Tennis Centre The Championships held at the Nottingham Tennis Centre will go ahead. Further details on tickets will be released nearer the time.

Due to Covid restrictions spectators will be be online only. There will be an LTA livestream each day.

Nottinghamshire Pride Titus: T. rex is King 4 July 2021 – 31 August 2022, Wollaton Hall Make way for the King! Don’t miss the chance to see a real T. rex on display in the UK. Housed at Wollaton Hall, you’ll see the skeleton of the T. rex himself, find out about how he was discovered, as well as immerse yourself in digital interactives to create Titus.

Saturday 11 September Old Market Square With the uncertainties around attendance at free events, organisers have taken the decision to move Pride 2021 from Saturday 31 July to a new September date. This will still include the Pride March.

Cricket – The Hundred From 24 July, Trent Bridge Cricket Ground The action-packed new 100-ball competition fuses world-class, fast-paced cricket with family-friendly entertainment off the pitch. Nottingham’s Trent Rockets will play four home fixtures at Trent Bridge, with each fixture including a men’s and women’s game.

The first home game will take place on Saturday 24 July against Southern Brave.

Arboretum Sunsets Until Sunday 5 September, Arboretum

BEFORE:

Creating better neighbourhoods Nottingham City Homes, in partnership with Nottingham City Council, local residents and other partners, are making improvements to the Crabtree Estate area of Bulwell in a programme that will see everyone in the area benefit – not just those who live in NCH properties.

AFTER:

It’s all part of a wider plan to deliver sustainable improvements across the city as part of a Decent Neighbourhoods programme, which will see five-year plans for each estate, all with the aim of creating places people want to live.

Works are well underway and residents and Councillors have been involved in the project which focuses solutions to improve open spaces in the area through better use of landscaping, barriers and fencing.

Next in the programme is a new multi-use games area, supported by Nottingham City Council who have funded the majority of the project, on a former, disused garage site and the complete refurbishment of an old housing office to create a new community hub.

Adrian Cheetham, Director of Property at Nottingham City Homes, says, “We’re considering the needs of the community and engaging positively with all concerned to deliver a neighbourhood investment programme that will really benefit the area and the people who live there.”

Footpaths across the estate are being improved so that they’re safer, more accessible and more attractive for everyone who uses them.

Did you know that Sherwood’s beautiful Woodthorpe Park Plant Shop, home to formal gardens, café, pitch and putt and much more, is home to the popular Woodthorpe Park Plant Shop?

Nottingham City Council has grown plants in the nursery at Woodthorpe since the 1920s. New glasshouses were built in the 90s to enable us to grow even more.

By 2015 we were growing 300,000 plants and we’re now up to an amazing 800,000!

You will find Nottingham-grown plants as far afield as Blackpool, Hinckley and Wrexham as well as closer to home in Derby and all the Nottingham districts. The money the city council makes selling these plants goes back into funding our services like our parks.

The Plant Shop staff love to share knowledge and passion for gardening with both beginner and experienced gardeners.

When the temperatures rise again this summer, it’s so important to stay out of open water, including lakes, rivers, quarries and canals.

The water may look calm and warm but undercurrents or cold water shock can quickly put the strongest swimmer out of action and unable to get back to safety.

Every year around 400 people die in the UK from drowning, with thousands more rescued but left with permanent and life-changing injuries.

Nottingham Clean Champions is a fun volunteering scheme helping you make small positive changes in your neighbourhood.

Time for a Castle adventure…

The gates of Nottingham Castle have swung open once more as The Castle on the Rock welcomes back visitors after an exciting £31 million revamp.

The Castle has been closed since 2018 for a massive revamp. Now, the wait is finally over and one of Nottingham’s bestloved attractions is back open to visitors.

Inside are new galleries, a brand new visitor centre, an amazing adventure playground for kids and kids-at-heart, new mixed-reality experiences and much more.

The three-year project has transformed the Castle we knew into a world-class day out – as you learn about the history of our 16

city, our rebellions, and our hero Robin Hood. You’ll never again wonder, why isn’t the Castle an actual Castle?

The Castle project has been jointly funded by the National Lottery through the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF), D2N2, Nottingham Castle Trust and Nottingham City Council with contributions from the Arts Council, as well as various additional fundraising efforts by Nottingham Castle Trust.

Prices begin at £22.50 for a family ticket, with adult tickets available for £13, and children for £9.50. Under-5s go free.

Nottingham Castle is full to the brim with an exciting calendar of events this year, but why not pay the Castle a visit after hours for live music events, action-packed activities, and one-off experiences. When the sun goes down, the Castle lights go on at Nottingham Castle Lates.

Until 20 February 2022, visit world-renowned temporary exhibition “Hello, My Name is Paul Smith”, which offers a unique insight into the magnificent mind of the Nottingham-born designer.

THIS SUMMER AND BEYOND This summer will see the skyline of Nottingham change further, as a series of major developments take shape or are completed.

Despite the pandemic, construction has continued at a number of key sites across Nottingham, especially around the Southside regeneration area.

BROAD MARSH AREA PROGRESS

The new spaces include planters and trees to bring more greenery to the Broad Marsh area, with more planned for Carrington Street and potentially along Collin Street.

There’s the Broadmarsh shopping centre site itself, with contractors working on behalf of the City Council currently preparing the site for demolition of the western section later this year, thanks to funding from D2N2the Local Enterprise Partnership, via theGovernment’s Getting Building Fund.

The Broadmarsh Advisory Group is also preparing their big plan for the site, using feedback from the Broadmarsh Big Conversation.

Your feedback is helping form the plans for the area, and Nottingham’s approach to the Broadmarsh centre site has received local, national and international attention, including BBC national news, the Guardian and in the New York Times!

HUNDREDS OF NEW COUNCIL HOMES ON THE WAY FOR NOTTINGHAM

Developments begun, or due to start on site this year, include: Eastglade, Top Valley – 106 new homes including one-bed flats, two and three-bed houses Nearly 300 new council homes are being built by Nottingham City Council and our partner Nottingham City Homes.

Once built, these homes will go to Nottingham people on our council house waiting list, at affordable rent.

So far, we have built over 650 homes for local people across the city, including in Top Valley, The Meadows and Bulwell as part of the Building a Better Nottingham Programme - affordable, well-designed and energy efficient homes, with open green spaces for the whole neighbourhood to enjoy.

Beckhampton, Bestwood – Up to 130 new homes, including two and three bedroom houses, bungalows and flats Southchurch Drive, Clifton – 36 one-bedroom apartments Tunstall Drive, Basford – 17 new homes, including two-bed houses and one-bed apartments Woodlands, Radford – 8 two and one bedroom apartments, converted from office space.

OTHER DEVELOPMENTS Construction of the new HMRC offices at Unity Square near Nottingham Station has been finished, and the offices are being furnished.

The first part of the Broad Marsh area transformation scheme, the new Nottingham College City Hub officially opens soon.

Plenty of new residential schemes are underway across the city, including on Queens Road, next to Nottingham Station, London Road near the BBC and in the Lace Market.

We’re all looking forward to getting back to normal following 18 months of disruption due to Covid-19. However, as restrictions are lifted, it is clear that the virus is still present in our city and the country as a whole.

There are three things we can all do help our city:

Keep following the guidance of ‘hands/face/space and fresh air’

Please consider continuing to wear a face covering when you are in shared indoor spaces or on public transport. Wearing a face covering is not so much about protecting ourselves but about making others feel more confident and comfortable.

Wash your hands to help reduce the risk of transmitting the virus.

You should do this regularly with soap and water – and use antibacterial hand gel when you are out and about.

Try to continue maintaining space from people who are not in your household or bubble. If you can, meet people outdoors or keep your home well ventilated.

Take regular tests, even when you don’t have symptoms

Regular, twice-weekly asymptomatic testing is vital in helping to protect yourself and those around you against Covid-19.

About one in three people with Covid-19 do not have symptoms but can still infect others. And people can still transmit the virus, even after Covid-19 vaccinations.

Now the city is opening up more, we know people will be enjoying more time with friends and family, sitting inside restaurants and bars, and enjoying the local attractions the city has to offer – which is why regular testing is so important.

There are supervised asymptomatic testing facilities available in the city and also mobile testing units. You can also can also order home testing kits to your door or pick up boxes from participating pharmacies and other community collect venues.

Taking a fresh look for the future A refreshed Council Plan has been produced setting our renewed priorities and direction for the next two years.

The council has taken stock in light of the Covid pandemic and a non-statutory review of financial and governance arrangements on behalf of the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, to look afresh at its 2019-2023 Council Plan.

The Council Plan sets out our vision, our key aims and ambitions and how we intend to deliver services and meet targets. It outlines our commitment to equality, fairness, and inclusivity, improving Nottingham for everyone who lives, works, studies, invests and visits here, while keeping citizens at the heart of everything we do.

The context in which the Council is operating has changed dramatically since the current Council Plan was adopted in 2019. In response to the non-statutory review, the council has produced a Recovery and Improvement Plan in which includes a commitment to refresh the Council Plan to reflect renewed thinking on what we do and how we do it.

The refreshed Strategic Council Plan 21-23 is still full of ambition, and previous commitments have been reviewed to ensure they continue to be relevant and deliverable. It will also ensure that the council’s finances are sustainable over the medium to long term, so that modern, effective and value-for-money public services can continue to be delivered.

Supporting local businesses

to go green For many businesses, vans are essential to deliver high-quality services – it just wouldn’t be practical to walk or cycle instead.

That’s why the city council is offering fully funded trials through the Electric Van Experience (EVE), offering organisations the chance to try a range of vans, giving them the confidence to invest in cleaner vehicles in the future, that will result in lower carbon emissions on our roads.

Since the scheme launched in November last year, dozens of businesses have already taken part.

Cycle into summer!

Make the most of the school holidays by getting out on a bike this summer. It’s a fun way to stay active, and there’s lots of support on offer to help you get into the saddle.

Ridewise Community Cycle Centres are up and running again, supported by the council’s Active Travel Fund. Family and adult sessions run every Saturday at Lenton Abbey, King Edward Park and Bulwell Forest, and you can even borrow a bike for up to four weeks from the Bike Library!

Cycling for All sessions run every other Sunday at Harvey Hadden Sports Village, with a range of adapted bikes on offer.

Scooting safely

With the better weather and restrictions easing, it’s great to see more people giving e-scooters a go – the 500,000th ride recently took place, making the scheme one of the most popular of around 40 trials taking place in the UK! The e-scooters are part of a 12-month Government-backed trial, to see whether this new mode of transport could provide a green, convenient and affordable way to get around, replacing shorter car journeys.

Working with operator Wind Mobility, we’ve taken a number of measures to improve safety and increase enforcement, to deter people from irresponsible and dangerous riding. However, as with any form of transport, we need people to behave responsibly and considerately.

An e-scooter is a motor vehicle, and being caught riding illegally, including while drunk, could result in your licence being removed.
