The Spirit of Notre Dame Academy
The Notre Dame Sisters were honored to welcome alumnae back for the 2024 Notre Dame Academy Reunion, highlighted by the 50th anniversary ofthe Class of1974. This milestone was especially meaningful, as these graduates were the last to receive diplomasfrom Notre Dame Academy before its consolidation with Archbishop Rummel High School toform Roncalli Catholic High School.
Founded on September 8, 1926, Notre Dame Academy opened its doors with 26 students in grades nine through eleven. For nearlyfive decades, the Academy shaped young women through a holistic education rooted in the physical, intellectual, and spiritual development of each student. The Academy closed on May 24, 1974, when 40 seniors received diplomas, bringing the total number of graduates to1,751.
Today, the Notre Dame Sisters continue to carryforward their commitment to education by extending scholarships to students in Catholic schools and supporting programs that empower young mothers with the professional training needed to sustain their families. The reunion not only celebrated cherished memories but also honored a legacy of learning, faith, and service that continues toflourish through the mission ofthe Sisters.

Together in Prayer, Together in Giving
In Remembrance and Prayer
On November 3, 2024, the Notre Dame Sisters hosted a Memorial Mass, a prayerful celebration honoring the deceased loved ones whom friends, family members, and alumnae entered into the Memorial Association over the past year. Guests were invited to join the Sistersfor this special liturgy and reception. Together, we gave thanksfor the lives of loved ones and entrusted them to God’s eternal care.
Generosity in Motion
On Giving Tuesday 2024, the Notre Dame Sisters invited our community to join us in extending care and compassion to those most in need. Thanks to the generosity of donors, contributions were shared evenly between two vital ministries: Omaha Welcomes the Stranger, which embraces refugees and asylum seekers as they begin new lives in our community, and Safe Homes, which provides survivors of domestic violence with safety, stability, and a path toward independence.
Together, these ministries reflect the Sisters’ legacy of welcoming hearts and open doors. Through Giving Tuesday, friends and supporters helped us continue sharing Christ’s love in Omaha and beyond.
Our Dedication, Our Impact, Our Legacy
LikeaCatholicSister: Shining a National Spotlight on Faith in Action
In March 2025, as the Church celebrated Catholic Sisters Week (March 8–14), the Notre Dame Sisters proudly launched the #LikeaCatholicSister campaign, a groundbreaking national initiative highlighting the dynamic impact of Catholic Sisters today. Created by Mikaela VanMoorleghem, Communications Director for the Notre Dame Sisters in Omaha, NE, the campaign united 34 congregations nationwide in a collaborative effort to challenge stereotypes and showcase the diverse ways religious life continues to serve communities.
Through storytelling, social media engagement, and historical reflections, the campaign emphasized the leadership, advocacy, and compassion of Catholic Sisters in education, healthcare, social justice, and spiritual formation. Participating congregations shared each other’s posts across social media, ensuring that every story reached the widest possible audience.
“For generations, Catholic Sisters have been breaking barriers, advocating for justice, and fostering hope,” said VanMoorleghem. “At a time when manyfind it difficult to see the light ahead, this campaign serves as a reminder that hope is alive. #LikeaCatholicSister celebrates a vibrant, purpose-driven calling that continues to shape communities and inspirefaith.”
The campaign not only highlighted the Sisters’ ongoing ministries but also invited the broader public to reflect on how they, too, can make a difference—living lives of compassion, advocacy, and service in their own communities. National media coverage amplified the campaign’s reach, bringing attention to the powerful, transformative work of Catholic Sisters across the country.
Our Faith, Our Connection, Our Family
A Journey of Connection: Pilgrimages Across Continents
This past year has been a profound reminder ofthe global bond that unites the Notre Dame Sisters. In May, Sisters Margaret Hickey, Rita Ostry, and Celeste Wobeter joined nearly 65 Sistersfrom thefour provinces—Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, and the United States for an international pilgrimage in Prague, Czech Republic. Together, they prayed, reflected, and walked sacred ground, from the awe-inspiring Svata Hora Basilica to the burial site ofthe Congregation’s Founder, Fr. Gabriel Schneider. Their journey also took them to places of sorrow, including theTerezin Concentration Camp and a Communist-era labor camp, where they bore witness to suffering and resilience.
Reflecting on the experience, Sr. Celeste shared, “A deeper experience of unity and oneness with all the Sistersfrom different countries was the strongest impact for me. Getting to know one another better—through meals, conversations, and times offaith-sharing left me with a profound sense of connection in our shared charism, vision, and ministries.”
That same spirit of unity and connection came to life again just weeks later when the Omaha community welcomed two visitorsfrom Europe: General Superior M. Metoda Piatnicková and Sister Miriam Bombová. Mother Metoda, who oversees all four provinces ofthe Congregation, makes it a priority to visit each Sister every six years. Her time in Omaha, from June18 to July11, 2025, provided a cherished opportunityfor personal conversations, prayerful reflection, and community celebration. Her presence also coincided with the Province Assembly Days, enriching the Sisters’ gathering with her wisdom and encouragement.
In both journeys the pilgrimage abroad and the visit at home—the Notre Dame Sisters experienced the beauty of connection across borders. Whether walking centuries-old cobblestone streets in Prague or sitting together in Omaha, the Sisters continue to live their charism with “welcoming hearts and open doors,” strengthening the bonds offaith and service that unite them as one congregation across four nations.
Honoring Service, Advancing Justice
Living the Gospel Through Service
Sr. Margaret Hickey, ND, was recognized with Roncalli Catholic High School’s highest honor, the Pope St. John XXIII Award, which celebrates individuals who embody the values of service, compassion, and dedication to Catholic education. Sr. Margaret’s involvement with Roncalli Catholic dates back to its1974 merger with Archbishop Rummel and Notre Dame Academy, and she has since been a steadfast advocatefor the school’s mission.
Currently serving on the Board of Directors and chairing the Governance Committee, Sr. Margaret has contributed countless volunteer hours, particularly during the Capital Campaign, helping secure resourcesfor the school’s growth.
Known for her visionary leadership, integrity, and encouragement, she has inspired students, faculty, and fellow board members alike, exemplifying the Notre Dame Sisters’ commitment to justice, service, and carefor others. Humbled by the recognition, Sr. Margaret expressed gratitude to God, her family, the Notre Dame Sisters, and the Roncalli Catholic communityfor shaping her journey.
Sisters Speak Out for Justice
On June 24, 2025, several Notre Dame Sisters, along with NDS Associates, and Communications Director Mikaela VanMoorleghem, participated in a local event in Omaha for Sisters Speak Out, a national prayer and public witness advocating for immigrants and a just economy. Coordinated with gatherings in Washington, D.C., the Omaha event, hosted by the Sisters of Mercy, brought faith-based advocates together to prayfor vulnerable populations, including immigrantsfacing deportation, families being separated, and those affected by proposed cuts to healthcare and food assistance programs.
This local gathering was part of a nationwide movement involving over 50 congregations of Catholic Sisters standing as a moral witnessfor just legislation and an inclusive society.
Their witness is rooted in Catholic Social Teaching which holds that all people are created in the image of God, and callsfor compassionate policies that uphold human dignity and the common good.
We were blessed to reach over $1.9 million in revenue between July 1, 2023, and June 20, 2024.
the sisters support the life enrichment center at Notre dame housing
Notre Dame Housing (NDH), a ministry of the Notre Dame Sisters, continues to thrive in its mission of providing affordable housing, supportive services, and community engagement opportunities for older adults in North Omaha. In 2024, the life enrichment program made remarkable strides in addressing food insecurity and expanding educational programming.
The Life Enrichment Center
Food Pantry has become a trusted source of nourishment and dignity, operating five times per month on a noquestions-asked basis. This past year, the pantry served 10,314 people, a 114% increase from the year before, and distributed over 128,000 pounds of food, a 67% increase. Rising food costs have not slowed this impact;
instead, NDH has met the challenge head-on, ensuring families and seniors have access to fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy, and other essentials.
Beyond food support, NDH also saw tremendous growth in educational and enrichment programming. In 2024, the Life Enrichment Coordinator hosted 1,660 programs, an 12% increase from the previous year, with nearly 23,000 people attending, representing a 38% growth. These programs ranged from educational courses and wellness initiatives to activities preventing isolation among seniors, addressing food insecurity, and fostering diversity and inclusion. The overwhelming community response underscores the
vital role of accessible programming and highlights the importance of the Life Enrichment Coordinator in ensuring these offerings continue to meet community needs.
Together, the growth of the Food Pantry and the expansion of educational programming reflect NDH’s unwavering commitment to health, dignity, and community wellbeing. What began as a neighborhood resource has grown into a beacon of stability, hope, and connection, making a lasting difference for thousands each year.
Our Ministries in Action Safe Homes Empowers Survivors
In 2024-2025, the Safe Homes Program provided critical support to 159 adult survivors of domestic violence and 256 children, distributing approximately $133,500 to help families achieve safe, independent living. The program is designed for survivors who have already taken courageous steps toward healing, including completing counseling, securing employment or funding, signing a lease, and developing an after-care plan. Funds are carefully allocated to support long-term stability, contributing to essentials such as rent, security deposits, utilities, transportation, phone and communication access, furniture, household necessities, and mortgage assistance.
Through our Keeping On program, survivors continue to receive compassionate follow-up support for an entire year, offering a trusted place to ask questions, navigate challenges, and stay connected to resources that strengthen their long-term independence.
By strategically investing in survivors who are fully engaged in rebuilding their lives, Safe Homes ensures that resources directly empower families to establish lasting security and independence. Through this program, the Notre Dame Sisters continue their commitment to providing practical, life-changing support for those overcoming the challenges of domestic violence.
