SOCIAL IMPACT 2014/15 Registered Charity No. 262259 For over 40 years the Theatre Royal (Norwich) Trust Ltd has been a registered charity with education as its focus.

Any surplus we make is dedicated to improving the theatre’s facilities (as we did in 2007) or to our extensive education programme.

We work with schools, other groups and thousands of local young people each year – developing their confidence, creativity and their contribution to their communities.

The Theatre Royal has a powerful social impact.

Apart from the performances on stage and people’s enjoyment of them, we increase cohesion, cooperation and wellbeing through shared experience. We are a shared resource of information and learning. And we are a civic celebration of our community’s skill, imagination, creative power and commitment.

Inside you’ll find figures detailing how many individuals we work with to achieve these aims, and examples of how the Theatre Royal makes a difference to people’s lives.

T H E AT R E A C C E S S P R O J E C T Provides an opportunity for schools which have not previously attended performances to come to the theatre, aiming to improve their happiness and confidence and improve their educational attainment.

We know that students who study the arts tend to perform better in other subjects, develop more self-esteem and learn discipline, collaboration, participation and empathy.

With funding provided by Norse, we have been able to assist schools all over Norfolk, tailoring each visit to the needs of the group – offering additional learning opportunities to add value to visits, drawing from a wide range of productions, resources, activities and events.

Since 2011, over 14,600 children from over 100 different Norfolk schools, across all academic year groups, have participated in this project.

NORFOLK SCHOOLS PROJECT The project aims to transform the lives of children taking part by improving their communication, problem-solving ability, teamwork, initiative, respect, adaptability, ability to work under pressure, healthy self-image, concentration, dedication, leadership skills and self-confidence.

Each participating class devises, writes and performs their own version of an opera on the Theatre Royal stage to an audience of around 1,000 people. They are supported by a team of professional musicians, directors and singers, and provided with tickets to see a professional version of their opera.

Teachers’ workshops are also run, to equip non-music specialists with skills to use in the classroom.

Pupils are given up to 6 free tickets to see any production at the theatre over the next year.

All activities are provided free to the schools, pupils, teachers and parents taking part.

The schools participating in 2014/15 were: Diss Junior School, Pulham Primary School, St Mary’s Junior School (Stranded [based on Lord of the Flies], Autumn 2014) Magdalen Gates Primary School, Kinsale Junior School, Firside Junior School (La bohème, Spring 2015) Norfolk Schools Project funded by The John Jarrold Trust and The Chivers Trust

OLDER PEOPLE Over £260,000 given in discounts to the Over 60s Limelighters dance group for the Over 50s took part in workshops with dance animateurs GET TOGETHER GROUP Provides an opportunity for people on their own to attend the theatre, reducing social isolation and helping them feel part of the community.

Met 27 times in 2014/15, and has 470 registered members.

PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES 38 Access performances (British sign language interpreted, Relaxed, Audio described or Captioned) Over 7,000 tickets sold to people with disabilities Over £90,000 given in discounts to people with disabilities The Theatre Royal provides a range of facilities for people with disabilities, including free headsets to amplify sound, Talking Notes to accompany productions for blind or partially sighted people, wheelchairs for those with limited mobility, Braille, large print and audio brochures, an Access Guide, and personal service and support OTHER CHARITIES AND COMMUNITY GROUPS Collections undertaken on behalf of other charities raised over £21,000 £6,700 of prize vouchers given to local groups

E N V I R O N M E N TA L I M PA C T Norwich Theatre Royal has been awarded an Industry Green Certification from Julie’s Bicycle (a not-for-profit organisation working with the arts and creative industries to improve environmental sustainability) for the 5th year running.

During 2014/15 we accomplished a 3 star rating, the highest certification possible within the industry for environmental work, in recognition of our efforts to embed environmental sustainability into our operations and activities.

Collaborating with Hellesdon High School’s Green Team to share ideas and advise on projects.
