WELCOME As we countdown to Christmas, our festive season is set to be a very exciting time. This year’s Theatre Royal pantomime Cinderella features a tremendous cast including Norfolk-born performer and bundle of energy Joe Tracini as well as TV and West End favourites Amanda Henderson and David Witts. I am thrilled that Cinderella 2019 marks the beginning of an exciting new partnership with Norwich City Football Club. The panto thrills keeps building with our 2020-21 production Dick Whittington, which has not been seen on our stage since 2008. This Christmas, we are also co-producing another spectacular family show at Norwich Playhouse. A Circus Carol will see us partner with Lost In Translation, one of the UK’s leading contemporary circus companies. Poignant, powerful and packed full of phenomenal physicality while maintaining the essence of Dickens’ iconic story, the show promises to be an exciting addition to our Christmas offer. Looking further ahead, I’m delighted to announce the critically-acclaimed production of Blithe Spirit starring Jennifer Saunders. It is many years since Noel Coward’s classic production was shown on our stage as is also the case with Harold Pinter’s The Birthday Party, which comes to us in May. Our stellar drama programme also includes the Olivier Award-winning A Monster Calls, the brilliantly inventive Holes based on the book and Hollywood blockbuster, Oscar Wilde’s A Woman Of No Importance starring Norfolk’s own Liza Goddard, and the National Theatre’s production of A Taste Of Honey starring another Theatre Royal favourite, Jodie Prenger. Next summer, I am so excited that Olivier Award-nominated musical SIX will be coming back home to Norwich where its journey started! This sassy history lesson about Henry VIII’s wives began its life last year at Norwich Playhouse. It has since enjoyed some right Royal success with eight different versions now being performed in the likes of the West End, a UK tour, Broadway, Chicago, Boston, Minnesota and Australia. Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, another West End’s hot ticket, is also on its way including the supremely talented Layton Williams who enchanted audiences in Matthew Bourne’s production of Lord of the Flies. I am thrilled to announce that we will welcome the great Birmingham Royal Ballet to Norwich for the very first time in June with one of Prokofiev’s most loved family ballets, Peter and the Wolf. A friend and long-term partner of ours, BRB’s new Artistic Director Carlos Acosta is no stranger to us as we enjoy an ever-growing partnership with the Cuban dance supremo.

Enjoy pre-theatre dining in our newly refurbished restaurant from 5pm each show night Mon - Sat. Your table is reserved for the whole evening so you can return during the interval to enjoy more drinks, coffee, desserts and ice creams. Reservations call 01603 598577 or visit ntr.org.uk/Prelude - PreludeNTR

Finally I am very excited to tell you that we have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to enhance the booking process and customer experience for all of you which will result in a major upgrade to our website and box office system. We look forward to unveiling this with a refreshed brand for Theatre Royal, Playhouse and Stage Two, early in the New Year … so watch this space! As always, thank you for all of your support and I hope you enjoy this new programme as much as my team and I have enjoyed putting it together for you! ‘A tough, tenacious play with an emotional bite.’ The Guardian

Monday 4 – Saturday 9 November

Tuesday 12 – Saturday 16 November

A Woman of No Importance opened Classic Spring’s critically acclaimed Oscar Wilde season in the West End in 2017. Funny and engaging, this bold and richly enjoyable production explores innocence and morality through Wilde’s glittering wit and masterful language.

The National Theatre bring Shelagh Delaney’s career-defining play to Norwich. Bijan Sheibani (Barber Shop Chronicles) directs Jodie Prenger (Oliver!, Abigail’s Party) as Helen in this British classic, an exhilarating depiction of working-class life in post-war Salford. This new production features a live on-stage band.

An earnest young American woman, an unscrupulous English Lord and an innocent young chap join the festivities at a lavish estate in the English countryside. Should a mother tell her son the truth and risk social ruin?

When her mother Helen runs off with a car salesman, feisty teenager Jo takes up with Jimmy, a sailor who promises to marry her, before he heads for the seas. Art student Geoff moves in and assumes the role of surrogate parent until, misguidedly, he sends for Helen and their unconventional setup unravels.

Starring national treasure Liza Goddard alongside Roy Hudd, Isla Blair, Emma Amos and Katy Stephens, don’t miss Dominic Dromgoole’s brilliant and assured revival.

Tuesday 21 – Saturday 25 January

Tuesday 28 January – Saturday 1 February

A brand-new production of the blueprint for the modern thriller, Dial M for Murder is back.

Inspired by a true story, Made in Dagenham is a new British musical which opened at the Adelphi Theatre in London’s West End in 2014.

TV and stage favourite, Tom Chambers, (Top Hat, Strictly Come Dancing) stars as the charismatic and manipulative Tony Wendice, a jaded ex-tennis pro who has given it all up for his wife Margot. When he discovers she has been unfaithful, his mind turns to revenge and the pursuit of the ‘perfect crime’. Made famous by Alfred Hitchcock’s world-renowned film of 1950, the iconic Dial M for Murder will leave you spellbound as Tony becomes more tangled in the web of his own making. Also featuring Christopher Harper (Coronation Street), this ultimate masterclass in suspense is guaranteed to entwine you with its spine-chilling twists and turns.

Based on the 2010 film which received four BAFTA nominations including Outstanding British Film, the show takes us back to 1968 when the Ford sewing machinists walked out in protest against sexual discrimination, demanding equal pay which led to the 1970 Equal Pay Act. With an inspirational story and a fabulous score, this is an uplifting musical comedy about friendship, love and the importance of fighting for what is right.

Dial M for Murder is the definitive seat-gripping drama that is not to be missed!

Funny, touching and timeless, Made in Dagenham shows how ordinary people can do extraordinary things when they stand together.

The tour includes classical works from the company’s history – Red Run revived after 11 years and Mazur – alongside two brand new works by Richard Alston and Martin Lawrance.

It’s murder putting on a new musical – literally!

Shine On is inspired by Britten and Auden’s song cycle On This Island, performed with a live singer Katherine McIndoe and pianist Jason Ridgway. Voices and Light Footsteps is a sensuously expressive piece influenced by the music of Monteverdi, the genius of Baroque. A Far Cry by Martin Lawrance is an impassioned piece set to music by Edward Elgar.

‘JENNIFER SAUNDERS... KILLINGLY FUNNY’ Times

NOËL COWARD’S

DIRECTED BY RICHARD EYRE Monday 24 - Saturday 29 February Jennifer Saunders is one of the UK’s most popular comic actresses. Her gleefully funny performance as the eccentric clairvoyant, Madame Arcati, delighted both critics and audiences alike when the production opened in Theatre Royal Bath’s 2019 Summer Season. With a distinguished creative team who have won a plethora of awards between them, this is a Blithe Spirit full of sparkling and spirit-lifting hijinks. Novelist Charles Condomine and his second wife Ruth are literally haunted by a past relationship when an eccentric medium - Madame Arcati - inadvertently conjures up the ghost of his first wife, Elvira, at a séance. When she appears, visible only to Charles, and determined to sabotage his current marriage, life – and the afterlife – get complicated.

JENNIFER SAUNDERS

Wednesday 15 – Saturday 18 April

After nearly a decade since the last sell-out UK tour, Cameron Mackintosh’s acclaimed production of Boublil and Schönberg’s musical Les Misérables will play Norwich Theatre Royal in March / April 2020.

Stanley Yelnats can’t catch a break. Born into a family cursed with bad luck, it comes as no surprise when he finds himself accused of a crime he didn’t commit.

This brilliant new staging has taken the world by storm and has been hailed “Les Mis for the 21st Century”. With scenery inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo, the magnificent score of Les Misérables includes the songs: I Dreamed a Dream, On My Own, Bring Him Home, One Day More, Master Of The House and many more. Seen by over 120 million people worldwide in 52 countries and in 22 languages, Les Misérables is undisputedly one of the world’s most popular musicals. Storm the barricades for a ticket!

Sent to a labour camp as punishment, he is tasked with digging one hole, five foot wide by five foot deep, every day. He’s told it is to build ‘character’. But the tyrannical Warden is definitely hiding something. How will Stanley and his fellow inmates deal with her demands, her two cronies, plus the fearsome rattlesnakes and yellow-spotted lizards? And will Stanley and his new friends unearth what’s really going on? Holes is the brilliant, inventive and creative new stage show based on the multi-awardwinning novel and the Hollywood blockbuster.
