FEATURE FILMS

This year’s programme brings together an eclectic mix of cinema at some of Norwich’s most atmospheric venues. Our opening night at the Norwich Playhouse launches in unforgettable style with The Phantom of the Opera, accompanied by a brand-new live score from Minima.

At Cinema City, highlights include Todd Haynes’ acclaimed Far From Heaven and the cult classic Kinky Boots. We’re also screening High Wire, DJ Ahmet and Alpha, alongside Ridley Scott’s iconic Thelma & Louise — presented in stunning 35mm.

From award winning previews to rediscovered classics, these features promise powerful performances, daring stories, and cinematic experiences you won’t want to miss.

The Phantom of the Opera

With live score from Minima

Dirs. Rupert Julian, Lon Chaney, and Ernst Laemmle, 1925, 93 mins

3 November, 19:30, Norwich Playhouse

A landmark of silent cinema, The Phantom of the Opera remains one of the most enduring tales of obsession, beauty, and terror. Lon Chaney’s legendary performance as the disfigured Phantom haunts the Paris Opera House in this gothic masterpiece, filled with atmosphere and visual invention.

For our 2025 opening night, we’re proud to present a rare screening of this classic, transformed by a thrilling live score from acclaimed musicians Minima. Their bold, contemporary soundtrack breathes new life into the century-old film, creating an unmissable fusion of old and new. Join us at the Norwich Playhouse for a spectacular start to this year’s festival — a onenight-only event that promises to be as eerie as it is unforgettable.

Far From Heaven

Dir. Todd Haynes, 2002, 107 mins + Q&A

5 November, 18:00, Cinema City screen 3

Academy Award nominee Julianne Moore stars with Dennis Quaid in this seductive story of a seemingly perfect family and the forbidden desires that threaten to tear them apart, directed by Todd Haynes.

Presented as part of the BFI FAN’s Too Much: Melodrama on Film season, this screening will be accompanied by a panel/talk in which film & colour experts will discuss the film’s wider contexts.

This screening is supported by the BFI Film Audience Network.

High Wire

Dir. Calif Chong, 2025, 105 mins + Q&A

6 November, 18:00, Cinema City screen 2

Fresh from a sell-out world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival, we are delighted to present Calif Chong’s luminous debut feature at NFF2025. The film follows Go-wing, 19, destined to be the first university graduate in her family. Between school and work, her life feels both hectic and isolated.

A chance delivery to a visiting circus changes everything. Go-wing’s hidden rollerblading talent is celebrated, and she discovers a daring new ambition on the high wire. Drawn into a world of spectacle, rhythm, and risk, she pursues her dream while concealing it from her father. Visually striking and emotionally charged, High Wire is a bold coming-of-age story of freedom, responsibility, and the delicate act of balance.

Followed by a short Q&A with one of the film’s crew (see website for latest confirmation of guests).

Thelma & Louise

Film on film: 35mm screening

Dir. Ridley Scott, 1991, 130 mins

10 November, 20:00, Cinema City screen 1

A rare chance to experience Ridley Scott’s iconic road movie in its original 35mm glory. Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon star as two women whose weekend getaway spirals into a legendary flight across America. A trailblazing film that is the definition of a modern classic.

Presented on 35mm, this screening offers the opportunity to rediscover the film’s full cinematic power – from Adrian Biddle’s striking cinematography to Hans Zimmer’s evocative score – as it was meant to be seen. A landmark of feminist cinema and a cultural touchstone, Thelma & Louise continues to inspire audiences more than three decades later.

Kinky Boots

Hosted by Will Power & Knuckle Sandwich

Dir. Julian Jarrold, 2005, 107 mins + Q&A

11 November, 18:00, Cinema City screen 2

Inspired by true events, this joyful British comedy follows a struggling Northampton shoe factory that reinvents itself by producing glamorous footwear for drag performers. With heartfelt performances and irresistible charm, Kinky Boots is a crowd-pleasing reminder that sometimes the boldest steps are taken in heels.

Introduced by local drag artists Will Power and Knuckle Sandwich, who will also host a post-film Q&A with the film’s producer and director (subject to change - see website for full details).

DJ Ahmet

Dir. Georgi M. Unkovski, 2025, 99 mins

13 November, 18:00, Cinema City screen 2

Ahmet is 15 and lives in a remote Yuruk village in North Macedonia. Between sheep-shepherding duties, strict conservative expectations, and the weight of community traditions, he finds escape and expression through music. When he falls in love for the first time—Aya, a girl already promised to someone else—his world opens in unexpected ways.

Vibrant, tender, and grounded by naturalistic performances, DJ Ahmet brings together the clash of old and new, heart and duty, to tell a coming-of-age story that’s both local and universal.

Winner of the Sundance 2025 World Cinema Dramatic Audience Award and the Special Jury Award for Creative Vision.

Alpha

Dir. Julia Ducournau, 2025, 128 mins

13 November, 20:15, Cinema City screen 2

Norwich Film Festival is proud to present a special early screening of Alpha, the bold new film from Palme d’Or-winning director Julia Ducournau (Titane, Raw).

In 1980s France, 13-year-old Alpha lives with her mother, a doctor. Their world is shaken when she returns from school with a tattoo — a single letter “A” — just as rumors spread of a mysterious blood-borne disease turning sufferers to marble. Starring Mélissa Boros, Golshifteh Farahani, and Tahar Rahim, Alpha blends body horror and intimate drama in a visceral exploration of superstition, stigma, and belonging. Fresh from competition at Cannes 2025, this is Ducournau’s most daring and personal work to date.

FILMMAKER HUB

The Filmmaker Hub is the central meeting place for all filmmakers selected as part of Norwich Film Festival’s official programme. Open across both festival weekends in the Sir John Hurt Film Trust’s Marchesi Room (11:00–19:00), it’s where filmmakers can register their attendance, collect lanyards, and meet the festival team. Taking place on Saturday 15 November at 18:00 in Cinema City’s Screen 1, this exclusive, invite-only event brings together filmmakers, sponsors, and festival guests for an unforgettable evening.

The ceremony will showcase all nominees across our competitive categories, recognising the talent, dedication, and creativity behind this year’s outstanding films.

Our sponsors will then announce the winners live on stage, with each recipient invited to accept their award and, if they wish, say a few words.

The Awards Evening is also a celebration of the collaborative spirit of independent filmmaking. It acknowledges the role of sponsors, partners, and supporters in making the festival possible, while spotlighting the filmmakers whose bold ideas and artistry make Norwich Film Festival such a vibrant platform for short film.

After the formal proceedings conclude, the evening continues in the Cinema City Bar from 20:00 to 22:30. Here the atmosphere shifts from ceremony to celebration, as guests gather to raise a glass, congratulate the winners, and enjoy each other’s company in a relaxed and sociable setting.
