Garda Representative Association statement on Dáil protest

M

embers of the Central Executive of the Garda Representative Association gathered last week at the gates of Leinster House to call on the

government to honour the terms of the Haddington Road Agreement, which ended Thursday, June 30th 2016. The Haddington Road Agreement allowed for a review of Garda pay and conditions which was to be completed no later than June 2014. Two years later, this review still remains outstanding and we are calling on the government to finalise it without any further delay. The Garda Representative Association will not consider the Lansdowne Road Agreement until the review under the Haddington Road Agreement has been completed. The 10,000 plus members of the Garda Representative Association have fulfilled their obligations under the Haddington Road Agreement. They accepted the pay cuts imposed upon them and worked an extra three days annually for three years without payment. Gardaí have done everything that was asked of them, but the government have

Acceleration in new car registrations

Continued from front page Commenting on the figurers SIMI Director General Alan Nolan said “At the start of the year we predicted that this year’s registration numbers should reach 150,000 for the first time since 2008 and these figures keep us on track to deliver that. From today of course the focus turns to the 162 registration period. This year promises to be the first normal year of registrations since the recession and with the range of attractive offers available across all brands we are confident that 162 will also deliver in the coming months.”

failed to fulfil the commitments they made. Furthermore, under the Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest (FEMPI) Act, organisations who have not signed up to the Lansdowne Road will be subject to a pay freeze from tomorrow, Friday July 1st 2016. This includes new recruits who are paid the paltry figure of €23,171. We are now calling on the government to postpone the imposition of FEMPI legislation until they fulfil their obligations under the Haddington Road Agreement. Ciarán O’Neill, President of the Garda Representative Association, says: “We signed up to the Haddington Road Agreement in good faith and did everything that was asked of us. We are disappointed that the government has failed to fulfil their part of the deal but still plan to freeze our increments from tomorrow until 2018. This is grossly unfair and we’re here today to express our anger and disappointment.”

A retrospective exhibition in honour of the late Noel Hanley, Ballina, who died earlier this year, will be held in Cafferys Art Gallery, Garden Street, Ballin, while an exhibition of his contemporary abstract works will also be showing in Ballina Arts Centre. The official launch will be by Terry Reilly on Thursday, 7th July, at 7.30pm and the work will be on display for two weeks. Noel was a highly diverse artist and the retrospective provides an opportunity to view a comprehensive collection of his works on loan from private collectors.

Pirate Queen comes to Ballina Arts Centre The spectacular Grainne Mhaol Show, which has enjoyed sell-out performances in Westport in recent years, comes to Ballina Arts Centre on this Thursday, July 7th at 8 p.m. It has major local significance this year as the cast and crew includes Ballina’s own Roisin Timoney as Grainne Mhaol and Patrick Lacken as producer/director, in addition to talented dancers James Merrick, Rachel Casey and Clodagh Syron.
