North Shore Culture Compass
Launched in March 2020, this free online map visualizes cultural offerings on Vancouver’s North Shore. The web-based mapping tool is a participatory culture map for and by the community, with new listings and events added all the time, and partnerships within and beyond the cultural sector.

A new themed treasure hunt was released each month over summer 2021, encouraging residents and visitors to explore local cultural treasures. Free clue-sheets are available to download for anyone to enjoy these activities anytime.

BC HERITAGE WEEK ‘ALTOGETHER INCLUSIVE’– TELLING TRADITIONS CONTEST, FEB-MAR 2022
One of the goals of the Culture Compass is to reflect the diverse traditions, cultures, religions, and communities of the region. We invited community members to share their traditions, as expressions of cultural identity.
TOURISM CHALLENGE – APR 23- MAY 31, 2022
Lower Lonsdale walking Treasure Hunt for tourism professionals, a Vancouver tourism industry tradition. To re-educate tourism professionals and enjoy what the region has to offer, preparing to welcome guests and share our passion and knowledge. This hunt featured 7 different assets listed on the Culture Compass, with a combination of online and in-person clues. Nearly 700 people downloaded this Treasure Hunt!
NAVIGATORS EDUCATION PROGRAMME
Using the North Shore Culture Compass, the Navigators Education Programme connects educators and teachers to ideas and resources to engage students in learning about the culture, heritage, history, geography and diversity of Vancouver’s North Shore. The free, downloadable guide is suitable for in-class or outdoor learning, developed for grades 6-12 within BC curriculum, with many activities adaptable for younger ages and community groups.


CULTURAL ASSETS As of 30 June 2022, 658 assets were listed on the Culture Compass in 10 categories, with an additional 593 current events listed over the year. As a dynamic and ever-evolving tool, cultural asset listings and current events are added and updated all the time. Listings are added by organizations, ensuring accuracy and building relationships, and building a community culture hub.

UNINTERRUPTED VR EXPERIENCE AT SHIPYARD COMMONS, NORTH VANCOUVER, JULY 14-24, 2021
Bringing the beauty and struggle of a salmon migration to different communities in Metro Vancouver. VANCOUVER’S NORTH SHORE TOURISM – sharing the Culture Compass with visitors and offering fabulous contest prizes for activations.
WEST VANCOUVER COMMUNITY ARTS COUNCIL –
hosted the You Are Here calendar exhibition ENHANCEMENTS TRAILS – A fun way to learn about local heritage is to explore trails, which are abundant on the North Shore. 25 trails were added to the Culture Compass, in 2021, indicated by a dashed green line on the map. Clicking on a line opens a listing with information about the trail and its cultural significance, an image, a link to public transit to access the trailhead, and a link to North Shore Rescue’s list of essential items to pack when hiking.

NEW EVENT TYPES – To help navigate cultural opportunities, we added new event types to filter options: Culture Days and Arts in the Garden; making it easier and faster to find these events.
