PRIMARY NEWS PRIMARY NEWS

A MESSAGE FROM MR CHRIS DROWLEY

Dear Parents and Carers,

It’s been a joy-filled and active week across our Primary School, and we’re so proud of the way our students continue to show enthusiasm, teamwork, and care for others.

A huge congratulations to a group of our Years 3 - 4 students who represented our College at the Hooptime Basketball tournament It was wonderful to see their teamwork and perseverance on display throughout the day. Whether it was scoring baskets, cheering from the sidelines, or learning to regroup after a tough match, each student played with great sportsmanship and heart. Special thanks to our staff who supported the students and for making the day possible!

Some of our Years 5 - 6 students also took part in a meaningful Service Learning opportunity this week through a local Tree Planting activity in collaboration with Darebin Creek Land Management and Whittlesea Council. This hands-on experience not only contributed to our environment but also reminded us of the importance of stewardship and service. We were blessed with fine weather and rich conversations as students worked together to plant and nurture new life in our community

As we reflect on these activities, we also want to encourage families to keep nurturing a love of learning at home, especially through reading together. Even as children grow older and can read independently, research shows that reading aloud to them remains a powerful tool for connection, language growth and comprehension A recent article from The Conversation highlights that children benefit emotionally and academically when reading becomes a shared, nightly

routine. We encourage you to make time each evening, even if just for ten minutes, to read together or take turns reading aloud. It’s an investment that grows minds and hearts. For further details read here.

I would like to leave you with the following passage of scripture, which I pray encourages you as parents, who are raising children:

"They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do." – Psalm 1:3

BOOK WEEK AND COSTUME SELECTION

Friday 22nd August 2025

As we look forward to celebrating Book Week together, we are excited about the opportunity to encourage a love of reading and creativity across our school community This is a special time where students can bring their favourite characters and stories to life through costume and imagination

This year’s theme is Book an Adventure, and we encourage students to explore books that inspire courage, curiosity, and character-building journeys. As we prepare for this fun and meaningful event, we would like to remind families of a few important guidelines to ensure that our celebration reflects the values of our Christian ethos:

Costumes should be positive, respectful, and in keeping with our Christian Values. We ask that students choose characters who embody traits such as kindness, bravery, honesty, and compassion.

Please avoid costumes that are scary or inappropriate, including witches (good or bad), wizards (good or bad), demons, vampires, zombies, or any that involve blood, gore, or horror themes These can be upsetting to our younger students and are not in line with our school values

Weapons of any kind, such as swords, guns, or other imitation weapons, are not permitted.

Students should be dressed modestly and appropriately, with costumes that allow for safe play and participation throughout the school day. Closed-toe footwear is required

Children who come dressed in costumes that do not align with these guidelines may be asked to change into their school uniform (parents may be contacted if there is no change of clothes available).

We strongly encourage creative, home-made costumes that reflect beloved characters from books and stories If you are unsure whether a costume is appropriate, please speak with your child’s Home Group Teacher ahead of time

Thank you for your continued support in making Book Week a joyful, inclusive, and values-aligned event for all students. We look forward to seeing the wonderful ways our students bring books to life through their costumes and imaginations!
