Check out Cozy, Charming Cottage Style While everyone loves the film The Lord of the Rings for the adventure and the characters, it's the cottages at the beginning of the film that are truly captivating. The simple thatched Hobbit houses radiate warmth, charm and cozy comfort. You can easily capture some of that same cottage appeal in your home with a few simple tips. GET THE STYLE Simple dĂŠcor that embraces natural elements is a good starting point. Furniture should be unpretentious and natural woods, or it can be painted. Other natural elements, such as unfinished cabinetry or exposed ceiling rafters add charm. Cottage style is big on casual which means that furniture is comfortable and in soft or muted tones. The eclectic mix of old and new is also a hallmark of cottage style. LET THERE BE WHITE When it comes to cottage color, white reigns supreme. From clapboards to shutters and furniture to bead board, white has a simple, casual appeal. It can be used on the walls, furniture, accents and accessories. Cool white octagon bathroom tiles from the 1920s or white marble kitchen counters both make a cottage statement and keep the look approachable and timeless. Simple white slipcovers in cotton duck can instantly switch a formal room over to the quaint cottage style. It's that bright, cheery look you're after. IN THE MIX Another feature of cottage style is a mix of accessories. If there's something shiny in the room, add something distressed. Think new and antique, ornate and simple, plain and fancy. Include humble accessories that reflect the local area. A good example is the beach cottage dotted with shells and other sea-related focal points, such as a life
preserver mounted on the wall. A lakeside cottage might feature a rustic oar over a door or an antique fisherman's creel on a fireplace mantle or used as a quaint catch for mail mounted by a back door. EMPHASIZE AGE Aged and weathered accessories are popular elements of cottage decor. Distressed furniture pulls in a cozy, worn look. If you are short on cast-offs, you can easily achieve a distressed look by painting a piece of furniture and sanding down the edges to give it a warm, well-used look. Repurposing is another way to cottage up your home. Try incorporating items such as a pie safe for storage in a bathroom, an antique table modified for use as a kitchen island or an antique stainless chicken nesting box mounted on a wall as storage in a mud room. Why Do We Need Fiber? Many food products boast added fiber on their packaging. Breads, cookies, beverages and more contain extra fiber in response to the public's growing desire to consume foods with high levels of dietary fiber, which medical professionals claim is an essential element to a healthy diet. Despite that publicity, many consumers remain in the dark about the role fiber plays in the body. About fiber Fiber is an essentially indigestible substance that is found mainly in the outer layers of plants. Fiber will pass through the human digestive system virtually unchanged from when it was consumed, without being broken down into nutrients. Fiber is classified into two types: insoluble fiber, which will not dissolve in water, and soluble fiber, which can be dissolved. Insoluble fiber is typically found in whole grain products, dark leafy vegetables, green beans, wheat bran, corn bran, seeds, nuts and skins of fruits and vegetables. Soluble fiber comes from foods like oats, nuts, fruits and dried beans. Fiber and digestion Fiber is essential to digestion. The Harvard School of Medical Health advises people should get between 20 to 30 grams of fiber each day. Fiber adds bulk in the digestive system, which helps soften stool and flush out the intestines. It assists in making bowel movements more frequent, preventing constipation. A diet high in fiber helps reduce the risk for hemorrhoids and diverticular disease. Fiber and weight loss While fiber is often associated with improving regularity, that is not its only role. Fiber, particularly soluble fiber that can be slowly digested, will prolong the digestive process, helping to keep the stomach full longer. Fiber-rich foods are also less calorie-dense, meaning you can eat more and feel full without consuming tons of calories. Increasing fiber consumption may help men and women looking to lose weight. Fiber and blood sugar The slow absorption of carbohydrates also regulates the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream. This can prevent sugar spikes that may be dangerous to those with diabetes. It also may be able to help reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in May 2000. Fiber and cholesterol Soluble fiber has been shown to help lower blood cholesterol concentrations by decreasing the absorption of cholesterol and bile acids in the small intestines. When less bile acid is absorbed, the body must use stored cholesterol to make more, lowering blood cholesterol as a result. The American Heart Association reports greater reductions in low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, cholesterol among people who consume diets high in soluble fiber compared to diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol alone. How to increase fiber consumption * Eat more bran, as bran has the highest fiber content of any food. * Consume whole fruit instead of juice. Whole fruits have more fiber and fewer calories than juices. Eating fruit can help you to feel fuller longer. * Pass up on refined flours. Opt for whole grains whenever eating bread, cereal and baked goods. Try to aim for grains that have at least three grams of fiber per serving. * Increase your consumption of beans. Beans are relatively inexpensive, filling and tasty. Plus, they pack a great deal of fiber, protein and other important nutrients. * Take a fiber supplement if you feel you are not getting enough fiber in your daily diet. Gummy fiber chews can be tasty ways to get fiber.

A mature staff means a better staff, and we have certified teachers and instructors in every group.” Sports are very popular at Crestwood, due to the high level of instruction that campers receive. “We have top of the line, high school level coaches and instructors who work year round in the area,” said Transport. “We have really upgraded the level of instruction. Crestwood takes what is already great, and brings it to the next level.”
While sports are always popular among children, Crestwood also employs dance teachers who own their own studios, and they are improving their list of adventure activities. “For first graders and up, we have a new, unbelievable treetop playground, where kids can roam amongst the trees and cross bridges from one tree to another. For the younger pre-school children, we just put in a nice and challenging — for their age — ropes course. It’s a nine element course that ends in a zip-line and is relatively low to the ground. It is like a canopy in Costa Rica,” explained Hemmerdinger. Crestwood has an amusement park-style waterslide, a trapeze, and a jumping pillow for all ages that is permanently installed into the ground, with a surrounding sandpit. It is a trampoline and an inflatable all in one, which offers a much more fun jumping experience and can fit 10-15 kids. “We have a 50-foot climbing tower, also,” said Hemmerdinger,” which is the most unique and unusual of its kind on Long Island. It is made of logs that are interconnected and joined together by a rope.” While these activities may seem like enough to keep any enthusiastic camper busy, the list of amenities at Crestwood goes on. There are swimming pools — which kids use twice a day — as well as programs involving nature, computers, arts and crafts, theater, chess, music, and more. The camp is very structured and scheduled, but as kids get older, they can choose electives throughout the day. Optional trips to Florida, California, and Montreal are an exciting treat for campers in seventh grade and up, but Transport explained that “there is so much to do on the grounds, that most of the time the kids don’t need to, or even want to, leave.” Fun is clearly a priority at Crestwood Day Camp, but Hemmerdinger and Transport want kids to get more out of their experience here than just a good time. “We encourage campers to try new things, get over any fears, and be courageous. We had a Wizard of Oz Theme Week and celebrated ‘Badge of Courage Day’, where individuals and groups are inspired to try something new,” Hemmerdinger said. “We believe that by trying new things, good things will come. Kids who choose Crestwood develop life and communication skills. They learn how to make and keep friends.” Hemmerdinger’s love for Crestwood began when he was child at the camp himself. He and Transport have been the owners since 2011 and both noted that if the past two years are any indication of the future, many new and exciting things are in store for Crestwood Day Camp. -Kristin Cacchioli

Andrea's 25, conveniently located in Woodbury Commons, is what I like to call the restaurant of the week, month, and year. Mention Andrea’s to anyone in the area and they’d say they have been there before, probably more than once. It’s a fun place, with good food, good service, and an energetic vibe; Andrea's is the new hot spot. The food choices are plentiful and can be prepared any way the diner may choose. My party consisted of eight diners, who knew the menu well enough to know what they wanted. Knowing how overly generous the portions at Andrea’s are, we all decided to share our various entrees. We were offered complimentary hot bread, served with an amazing red pepper spread. We began with Baked Clams ($10.95), Italian Chopped Salad ($9.95), and Fried Calamari ($12.95) — nicely fried and coated in the perfect amount of oil, which is usually hard to find. We also ordered the Mozzarella Tower ($12.95), an unbelievable antipasto with mozzarella, tomato, roasted pepper, and grilled eggplant.
We had been advised to try Sal’s Italian Mac and Cheese ($18.95), an unusual, yet outstanding twist on the typical macaroni and cheese dish. This was so tasty that I could have easily passed on my entrée and feasted on this creamy meal all night. It is prepared with pancetta, onions, mozzarella, parmigiano reggiano, and pecorino romano, topped with breadcrumbs — lots of simple ingredients for an anything-but-simple dish. The Linguine with Meatballs and Sausage ($18.95) is tasty, served nice and hot, and the Zucchini Angelina ($18.95) is an Andrea’s Specialty and one of my favorite dishes to date. The zucchini is thinly sliced and sautéed with chicken and sun dried tomatoes in a light marinara sauce. For a fabulous shrimp dish, try the Shrimp Dijon ($19.95). The baked Dijon mustard shrimp over burnt string beans with a great dipping sauce is difficult to share — not because it is a small portion, but because it is just too good. Chicken Scarpiello is a familiar dish for those who have dined in family style restaurants, and Andrea’s preparation of this dish is fantastic ($19.95). It is filled with roasted chicken, veal, sausage, and red bliss potatoes, topped with sautéed broccoli, red bell peppers, and onions — and the seasonings are superb. The list of main courses is abundant, including the more familiar Chicken Milanese, Salmon Dijonaise, Lobster, and Veal Caprese. Always on the menu for the beefeater are a New York Strip Steak, Rack of Lamb, and Pork Chop Oreganata, served with mashed potatoes and cabernet sauce. One of our dining companions preferred a lighter meal, so she ordered the Veal Scaloppini ($19.95), which was served with an arugula salad; it was light, but not small; nothing at Andrea’s is small. Even though the portions are large, side dishes should not be forgotten. The Burnt Broccoli ($7.95) is crunchy and the Eggplant Napoleon is a meal in itself. Also try the Mashed Potatoes, the Meatball, and Sautéed Spinach. We never got around to dessert, but since there was a birthday boy in our company, our attentive waiter brought over a delicious piece of Italian Cheesecake — large enough for all to share. Good location, big portions, and an upscale, romantic setting make Andrea’s 25 an upbeat and enjoyable dining location. This is one of the newest “in” restaurants on the North Shore. Andrea’s 25 is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. Take out is available and reservations are accepted. Definitely give this place a try. -Randy Gordon
