Why Marriage Can be Good for Your Health

Proponents of marriage may quote any number of reasons why couples should tie the knot instead of living a life of singlehood. A desire to raise children together is one reason many couples wed, but getting hitched might also be better for your health. That's right — a growing body of evidence has suggested marriage may be beneficial for men and women from a health and wellness standpoint.

A 2006 study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community found that, compared with married people, people who are widowed, divorced/separated or have never married are more likely to die earlier. In addition to a greater combined wealth that may make access to health insurance or better healthcare possible, there are a number of reasons why married couples tend to be healthier and happier.

• Safety. Being married and committed to one partner reduces your risk of developing a disease through intimate encounters. Furthermore, married couples tend to be less involved in behaviors that may put them at risk for violent altercations between others. Research by the United States Justice Department has found that single and divorced women are four to five times more likely to be victims of violence in any given year than women who are married.

Bachelors are four times more likely to be victims of violentcrime than married men.

• Health monitoring. Married couples may pay attention to and monitor changes in each other's health more so than boyfriends and girlfriends. Couples who can recognize the subtle changes in physical or emotional health may be able to identify problems before they become serious.

• Greater financial security. Money is a primary source of stress for many men and women. Living in a dual-income household eases some of that stress and the potential health problems that come with it. Some research has indicated that married men make as much as 40 percent more money than comparable single men, even after accounting for education and job history. Marriage could be seen as an indication of security and trustworthiness, traits appealing to a company.

• Increased intimacy. According to information compiled

by Richard Niolon Ph.D., nearly half of all married people engage in intimate relations twice a week, compared to 20 to 24 percent of single and cohabitating men and women. Sex releases endorphins that improve mood, can be classified as moderate exercise, creates a feel-good environment that can reduce stress and promotes further contact between couples.

• Improves mental health. Many people joke that getting married removes freedoms that lead to happiness, but researchers find that this to be false. In their book, The Case for Marriage: Why Married People Are Happier, Healthier, and Better off Financially, authors Linda Waite and Maggie Gallagher found that married men are only half as likely as bachelors and one-third as likely as divorced guys to take their own lives. Wives are also much less likely to commit suicide than single, divorced or widowed women. Married people are much less likely to have problems with alcohol abuse or illegal drugs. An international study of 17 developed nations from Steven Stack and J. Ross Eshleman found that married persons have a significantly higher level of happiness than persons who are not married, even after controlling for gender, age, education, children, church attendance, financial satisfaction and self-reported health.

There are many health-related benefits to getting married.

Give Faded Outdoor Light Fixtures a Makeover A lot of homes have a common problem — their exterior light fixtures are worn and faded. Faded fixtures, lamp posts and pendants look bad and kill a home's curb appeal. Here are some tips on ways to restore outdoor lights and what to look for in new fixtures.

THE CULPRITS Outdoor fixtures suffer a constant beating from sunlight, cold, heat, ice, snow, wind and rain. The biggest cause of fading is ultraviolet (UV) sunlight, says Jeffrey Dross, corporate director of education and industry trends for Kichler lighting company (kichler.com).

"It's hard to put something outdoors and not have an effect on the finish," Dross says, "but choosing a finish that's UV stable or resistant is helpful."

Dross explains that there are three basic types of lighting fixtures: those with painted finishes, those with powder-coated finishes and those made of solid material, such as brass or copper.

"Solid material fixtures are the most durable and will last longest," Dross explains.

"Of course, their finishes will change, but they don't fade; they develop an aesthetically appealing patina, like verdigris in copper and a burnished patina for brass."

FAST FIXES What do you do if you have a perfectly good fixture that's simply lost its color?

Giving your lighting fixtures a new lease on life can be as simple as adding a new coat of paint. If fixtures are easy to remove, they can be disassembled and revived with a shot of spray paint. As always, follow good painting rules: sand the surface thoroughly, wipe off excess dust and spray lightly with the best quality spray paint you can find.

For another measure of protection, add a UV-protective coating, such as Krylon's UV-Resistant clear spray coat (krylon.com). This is the easiest way to squeeze another two to three years out of your lighting fixtures.

Powder coating can also brighten things up. There are powder coating companies that will take rusty lawn furniture or faded light fixtures, blast away the old finish and apply a new one. Search for these online under "powder coating."

Powder coating involves electrifying the fixture, then spraying on the new finish — a type of coating that's electrostatically applied to the surface. Make sure you inquire about whether the powder coating used is UV stable. Even if it's not, this process will give you a fixture that looks new and will wear longer than paint.

BUY NEW Of course, there's always the option to buy new fixtures.

If it's in your budget, look for units made from solid brass, copper or even wrought iron. These typically run about twice the cost of off-the-shelf fixtures, but they last much longer. If these are too costly, look for powder-coated fixtures labeled "UV stable," says Dross.

"Powder-coated finishes are usually, though not always, UV stable, so they'll stand up against the elements and look better longer," he notes.

Teach your Kids the Importance of Good Sportsmanship Children who play sports often walk away with important lessons in teamwork, sportsmanship and dedication.

Sportsmanship can be defined as playing fair, following the rules of the game, respecting the rulings of referees and treating opponents with respect, whether you are winning or losing. During the heat of competition, it can be challenging to be a good sport, particularly when the goal is to win and you are playing a longtime rival. However, sportsmanship is something that should be a priority for players, parents and coaches. Here are some of the ways that you can teach your kids to be fine sportsmen and women.

• Abide by the rules of the game. Rules are there for a reason: to promote fairness and to keep play organized and in check. Many sports are a team effort and the team cannot work effectively if players have their own agendas.

Knowing the appropriate times to pass, shoot and block are important rules to follow.

Winning is important, but being a good sportsman is important for athletes of all ages.

• Practice anger management. Anger can take over when an official makes a questionable call or a teammate makes an error. Arguing with officials or teammates can get in the way of camaraderie and good performance. If your son or daughter has a problem with anger on the field or court, he or she could get ejected from games and possibly suspended from playing in the future. Teach them to release their anger in a healthy way and to honor the decisions of referees.

• Be a team player. Players have different skill levels and abilities. There will always be the players who excel and those who may need a little more practice. Players should not hog the ball or make attempts to exclude others from the game. Enabling everyone to have their chance to shine is a good way to be a good teammate and friend.

Coaches will usually recognize this selfless way of playing and reward the player for his or her efforts to include everyone in the game.

• Offer words of encouragement. Even the star player can have a bad game once in a while. A true sportsman will not tease others when they are down. Teammates should always be encouraging of one another. If a player looks to a more talented teammate for help, it is important for that teammate to offer positive words of encouragement and tips, without making the other player feel inferior.

• React well to a loss. There will be winners and losers in competitions. Don’t be a sore loser; bursting into tears or jeering at the winning team reflects badly on you and your teammates. It may not feel good to lose, but be able to share in the joy of the other team and congratulate them on their success. Always shake hands and remember to turn all losses into learning experiences to show you and your teammates what you need to work on for future games.

Extracurricular activities are popular at this 440-student school and the Rocket Club has made it to national competitions for the past three years. “For five years, we have had this club for rocket design and it is one of our most popular activities; they do very well. Our Select Chorus has also recently won a gold medal at NYSSMA,” said Bell. “Girls in grades 49 can join Pacers, where they run together and learn about health, nutrition and good decision making. Every time they run a 5k, they donate money to a chosen cause.”

Last year, the age for foreign language instruction dropped to kindergarten and now students as young as five years old can begin learning about another culture and its way of communication. Also new at The Green Vale School is a buddy program, where fourth and fifth graders get paired up with younger students to read and participate in fun activities together before school.

Twelve years ago, The Green Vale School introduced an early childhood center in a building specifically designed for small children ages 2-5. Low windows and heated floors make for an optimum combination of play and learning. Young teachers and “teachers who are like your favorite grandma,” according to Bell, have decades of experience and love working with the children every day.

The Green Vale School also boasts a beautiful campus, which is the location for the New York Giants football camp and New York Yankees baseball camp. Lacrosse Unlimited runs a boys lacrosse camp over the summer and many students enjoy The Green Vale School’s chess and soccer camp.

The Mill Pond House

437 East Main Street, Centerport (631) 261-7663, millpondrestaurant.com My wife and I recently admired the sunset over the Mill Pond in Centerport, as we dined on the patio at the nearby Mill Pond House restaurant. The Mill Pond House is the perfect summer dining destination — stunning and romantic. It is located inside a 100-year-old colonial house, although the restaurant itself has only been open for ten years.

An eatery with a splendid view is an ideal place for the warm weather months. We began our evening outdoors on the heated patio and then moved to the Tiki Bar for drinks. Everywhere we went, my wife and I sat in awe of the spectacular view. As we relocated indoors to the romantically-lit dining room, the ambience continued to impress. We took it all in as we happily sipped the white wine our server recommended, after informing us that Mill Pond House received the 2012 Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator.

We began our meal with Lobster Bisque Soup ($6$9) and New England Clam Chowder ($5-$8), which were served steaming hot and delicious. The Sautéed Littleneck Clams ($13) caught my attention and served as the perfect appetizer. My wife, on the other hand, chose the Chopped Salad ($11) as a starter and she delighted in the mixed greens, apples, dried cranberries, candied pecans, strawberries and bleu cheese, topped with a light port wine dressing.

Before moving onto the entrees, I couldn’t help but try the Lobster Mac and Cheese ($16). Unlike most run-ofthe-mill mac and cheeses, this dish was complete with large chunks of lobster and was an excellent choice. The appetizers are plentiful at Mill Pond House and other enticing choices included Caviar, Crabmeat Cocktail, Kobe Beef Sliders and Bluepoint Oysters Rockefeller.

As an entrée, I savored the Filet Mignon ($35/$41); it was as soft as butter and literally melted in my mouth.

Paired with burnt broccoli and sautéed wild mushrooms and onions, my meal was as perfect as the restaurant’s setting. My wife decided to order the Grilled Jumbo Margarita Shrimp ($29), with a side of Roasted Asparagus ($8). Although she found it a bit dry for her taste, nothing could put a damper on the glorious night we were having.

The menu at Mill Pond House offers vegetarian dishes, as well as gluten-free choices. There are also pasta, chicken and veal options, with a variety of ways to have them prepared.

The Mill Pond House places importance on its desserts, or as they are called here, Sweet Endings. The Banana Cream Tart ($9) in a graham cracker crust was delicious, as was the Chocolate Mousse ($9). Both were lightly rich and provided a truly sweet ending. Coupled with a Mocha Latte — Bailey's & Crème de Cocoa ($10), our perfect meal was complete.

When a restaurant is exceptional in service, food quality and view, it deserves two thumbs up, which is definitely what I would give Mill Pond House. It is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, with brunch on the weekend.
