These include ficus trees, pothos ivy, peace lily and Chinese evergreens. These plants go well in both contemporary and traditional styles. Other good options include ferns, English ivy, spider plants and diffenbachia. These plants will look and perform well when you have a traditional style home. Palms are another good choice for traditional styles. Classic and elegant, palms lend a timeless look. Place a tall dragon plant next to a medium-sized mother-inlaw's tongue and then fill in with a smaller paddle plant. If your home is more traditional, try a grouping using a traditional arrangement. A tall urn planter with a palm looks fabulous when pothos ivy is planted around the base. Preventing Childhood Tooth Decay is Easy Here’s health news you can sink your teeth into: dental decay is the most common chronic childhood disease, with more than 16 million kids suffering from untreated tooth decay in the U.S. The mouth is the gateway to overall health, and an unhealthy mouth can be associated with obesity, diabetes, and even heart disease. In the U.S., oral disease causes kids to miss 51 million school hours and their parents to lose 25 million work hours annually. Nevertheless, a survey by the Ad Council found less than half of American parents report that their children brush their teeth twice a day or more. A SOLUTION To remedy that, The Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives was formed. It’s a coalition of more than 35 leading dental health organizations and, with the Ad Council, they created the Kids’ Healthy Mouths campaign to teach parents, caregivers, and children about the importance of oral health and simple ways to prevent oral disease. Created pro bono by ad agencies Grey Group and Wing in New York, the campaign stresses the importance of brushing for two minutes, twice a day.

“The messages in this campaign may seem simple but their impact will be felt for years to come,” said Gary Price, Secretary and CEO of the Dental Trade Alliance Foundation. “Most mouth disease is preventable using steps that can easily become a part of every child’s life routine.” According to the survey, 60 percent of parents with children ages 12 or younger don’t regularly help their children brush or check to make sure they’ve done a good job. Parents also report that, on average, their child spends more than two hours a day on such things as playing video games, texting, or watching online videos. The campaign suggests some of this time be used for improving their oral health with public service announcements (PSAs) that poke fun at the things children spend their time doing and highlight that it only takes two minutes, twice a day to help maintain a healthy mouth and prevent future oral pain. Let’s Make Music and Dance instills a love of dance into each student, and prepares him or her for a future in dance, if they so choose. The studio offers classes in tap, jazz, ballet, lyrical, hip-hop, and acro, with recitals held at The LIU Tilles Center. “Kids love the hiphop classes,” said Criscuola, “but we are mostly known for tap; that is our main base.” In addition to regular classes this fall, dancers ages nine and up can audition for the competition team, which involves extra dance

classes during the week. People thrive on competition today, but in this competitive age, Criscuola stresses the importance of respect toward everyone. “We are one of the nicest and friendliest dance centers,” she explained. “We make sure our students are encouraging everyone, no matter what team they are on, and clapping for each group that performs.” Having these positive role models as dance instructors allows students to realize the importance of good sportsmanship, and be able to bond with their teachers. In fact, Criscuola was one of Drexler’s students in 1984 and they have both learned so much from each other since that time. “Rebecca went away to college to major in dance and when she came back, we became business partners,” said Drexler. “My father is the one who opened this studio in 1975 and I have been there ever since. Let’s Make Music and Dance is a very family-oriented business; we are a dance family.” Drexler and Criscuola know each and every child who walks through the doors of their studio and Criscuola said that even the alumni play a huge role. “The alumni come back every year and perform in our shows,” she said. “It’s great to watch everyone come back and to see the generations passing through our studio. The small, historical town of Oyster Bay is sprinkled with fine restaurants throughout its quaint streets. My mother-in-law was visiting from Florida for her birthday, so I was looking for a place with a diversified menu when I recalled Jack Halyard’s American Bar and Grill. I have always been a fan of this cozy restaurant, and with their recent addition of sushi to their menu I had the strong desire for another trip. The dining room is centered between the bar area and the party room, and lends itself to a comfortable feel — with white napkins and tablecloths included. Our friendly server greeted us by setting delicious bread and sundried tomato butter on the table.

The meal began with a celebratory toast to my motherin-law, before hearing the specials that evening. I was already anxious to try their new sushi and the interesting selections only fueled my desire. I began with the Chef’s Special Roll, and then continued with the beautifully served and deliciously tasting Cali Spicy Tuna Roll ($14) with teriyaki sauce. My wife and mother-in-law started with a Salmon Avocado Roll ($8), and since it was the birthday girl’s first time eating sushi, we gave her a few pointers, after she started cutting the roll with a knife and fork. My daughter opted for the Classic American Sliders ($12), three small cheeseburgers served with macaroni and cheese — hardly an appetizer. Other starters include Kung Pao Calamari, Sicilian Quesadilla, and Ahi Tuna Tartare Nachos. I recently developed a fondness for beets, so the Roasted Beets Salad ($10) was perfect for me. Served with baby greens, candied walnuts, crumbled bleu cheese, tomatoes and raspberry vinaigrette, the only disappointment came from my wife, who wished it was big enough for two! Despite its limited menu, Jack Halyard’s has an interesting collection of entrees from which to choose. The Seafood Linguine ($22) is a must; it is loaded with shrimp, crab, bay scallops, and wilted spinach. The citrus chardonnay sauce tops it off perfectly. The menu’s “Simply Grilled” section includes Grilled Atlantic Swordfish ($28) — perfectly prepared and served with seasoned vegetables and rice pilaf. My mother-in-law is unable to resist Skirt Steak ($26), and she was delighted she gave into her temptation. The flavorful beef was served well done, exactly how it was ordered. A birthday dessert from our server brought a wonderful smile to the birthday girl. The White Chocolate Pizza — yes, that is a dessert — was one of the special selections being offered that night. Jack Halyard’s chef loves being creative with his dessert menu, so you never know what will be available. This element of surprise is wonderful!
