I SAY East YOU SAY North
from Booklet
Ask a local for directions and you’re likely to hear “head east,” when you thought you were heading north.
As in “up the North Shore.” The reality is the North Shore runs on a southwest/northeast angle. Check out the map on the back cover for a good visual of this. So, if you’re headed up the shore, you’re mostly heading east. If you stand with your back to Lake Superior and look to the surrounding forest, you’re generally looking north.

So if someone tells you to go north, they might mean, “into the woods.” If the route is east, you’re headed toward Canada, while west indicates a Duluth bearing. All paths south will eventually end at Lake Superior, not a bad track to be on at all.

T his beautiful outdoor town features Lake Superior as the main attraction.
There is no better place to watch the gigantic lakers (ships that sail the Great Lakes) maneuver in and out of port! They come into Agate Bay to load up on iron ore from Minnesota’s Iron Range, located just west of Two Harbors. Walk along the breakwater to the light station to encounter these vessels up close!
Iron ore was central to the foundation of the city dating back to 1884. The city has a rich history in the iron industry, and the historical sites tell the story of Lake Superior shipping, railroads, lighthouses, the start of 3M (yes!), and much more. Be sure to check these out!
A walk around the waterfront brings you upclose to Lake Superior. Stroll around Agate Bay where there is a boat launch, ship watching, the breakwater to the light station, picnic areas, and more. Take the Sonju Trail over to Burlington Bay to explore the Lake Superior ledge rock, and walk or bike through the beautiful lakeside forest.
There is so much more to explore in Two Harbors! Follow along in this guide to find the best attractions, shops, restaurants, and lodging.
