The most beautiful and iconic views of the North Shore are captured at the eight Minnesota State Parks along Lake Superior. A Minnesota State Park vehicle permit is required for entrance. They cost $7/day or $35/year and are good for all 75 Minnesota State Parks.

See one of the North Shore’s most iconic waterfalls. Hike to five falls in total. Admire historic structures built by the 1930’s Conservation Corps. Dozens of trails for hiking, biking, skiing, and snowmobiling. Accessible trail and restrooms. Summer weekends and afternoons can be very busy, I recommend planning to visit during midweeks and early mornings.

46.0 SPLIT ROCK LIGHTHOUSE
Explore trails for hiking, biking, snowshoeing, and fat-tire biking. Walk the lakeside trails and look up at the 130-foot cliff to the lighthouse. Access the Gitchi-Gami State Trail. Camping at the new Shiprock Campground. Admission to the adjacent Split Rock Historic Site is separate. Pictured above.

The quiet park. Off the beaten path, it has limited development, great hiking, picnicking, and secluded backpacking campsites. Explore the trails around Benson Lake, or along the Manitou River. Make it to the park’s five, remote scenic overlooks.

Temperance River
Hike the rocky path upstream to see the captivating drill bit gorges. Hike downstream to see the falls and the mouth of the river at Lake Superior. Connect with the Gitchi-Gami State Trail, the Superior Hiking Trial, and other hiking and snowmobile trails. Seasonal camping available.
Cascade River

Hike along a series of five small waterfalls, all within a half-mile of Hwy 61. Take a loop around the river for a quick hike, or explore the network of trails around the park. Continue along the Cascade River, or connect with other trails including the Superior Hiking Trail, Norpine Trails, or the spur trail to Lookout Mountain. Seasonal camping and picnicking are available.

Hike to the famous Devil’s Kettle Falls. Half of the river goes over the falls and continues to Lake Superior, the other half disappears into a cauldron! Hike along the Brule River and the Superior Hiking Trail. Backcountry ski and snowmobile trails. Seasonal camping.

GRAND PORTAGE
Known for High Falls, the tallest waterfall in Minnesota. Located on the border of Canada, it has a 1/2-mile accessible path and boardwalks to two waterfall viewing platforms. Take side trails along the Pigeon River. Accessible picnic pavilion, visitor center, and restrooms.
