Meet a Machine an interactive experience for all ages The 3rd annual Meet a Machine is gearing up to be bigger and better than ever. The event creates an interactive experience for kids to touch, sit on, and even ride machines like: agriculture and forestry equipment, excavators, Boom Trucks, Army vehicles, Forestry Machines, KSAR Command Truck Vintage vehicles and a dragster. Naturally, there will be many, many opportunities for kids to honk the horn.

Volunteer organizer Jim Moorhead laughs, “Let ‘em honk all they want, this event is for them!”

The event is a fundraiser for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), a leading charitable organization that is dedicated to funding type 1 diabetes research.

At the helm of this massive event, Jim is intent on making the day an unforgettable event for children of all ages.

According to Shianne Carswell, JDRF Senior Fundraising & Development Co-ordinator, “The event has drawn over 3000 people each year so far. Kamloops honouree for the 2017 Investors Group Walk for Alzheimer’s

This year’s honouree Marilyn VanDongen with husband Casey.

Walk with other Kamloopsians on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at the TCC Indoor and Outdoor Track, 910 McGill Road. Registration begins at 9am with the walk happening from 10:30am-12pm.

Marilyn VanDongen is a very expressive, social, and lively woman.

She is a wife, a mother, a friend, and the fact that she is a lifetime member of the Catholic Women’s league is a true testament of her sincere commitment to something she believes in.

Marilyn was born and raised in New Westminster and met her husband Casey at midnight on New Year’s Eve in 1972. She had been working and made it to the dance just in time for a New Year’s Eve kiss. In Marilyn’s words, “He came for a kiss, and then came back for seconds. We have been married for 43 years!”

Marilyn is a Life Member of the Catholic Women’s League (CWL).

Right from the beginning she was very involved with numerous aspects of the Catholic Women’s League.

Marilyn held most positions within that organization and then things started to change. “I was all mixed up. I knew something was wrong. I was asked to be the Provincial President in 2009 and

I knew I couldn’t do the job but I had “reasons” why I felt this way, I was burnt out, and my mom had died. I thought that’s what was wrong.” Then her vision became drastically impaired and she was no longer able to perform tasks related to numbers. For someone who was treasurer for the CWL and did her husband’s books for years, that was difficult to adjust to.

During an Early Stage Support Group that Marilyn attends at the Alzheimer Society of B.C., she shared that she can no longer understand written words. She says, “I need someone to read my mail and emails for me. I can no longer read or write.” Marilyn appreciates the support she receives from that group as the other members can relate to the feelings associated with the changes they are experiencing.

Regarding her diagnosis, Marilyn says, “It’s important to let people know. Other people started noticing as I wasn’t myself anymore.”

“Casey and I had “the talk” and he said, “I love you even more and I will always be there for you.” I felt instant relief and so secure.”

Chimera Theatre presents King of the Road Chimera Theatre is also presenting a staged reading of King of the Road as the final installment of our 2016/2017 New Play Series. King of the Road is a new Canadian drama by local theatre professional Glen Cairns that explores issues of alcoholism and indigenous people in the life of a man who is trapped in a roadside motel, his relationship, and his life.

With a commitment to the development of new Canadian plays, Chimera Theatre’s New Play Series presents plays-in-progress by new and emerging playwrights. This means an opportunity for playwrights to write, rewrite, experiment and expand their work while providing audiences with a thrilling and intimate night of theatre. After the staged reading, there will be a talk back and Q&A session with the playwright, actors and director about the play.

Sarah Ladd, President of Volunteer Kamloops is saying farewell Over the past 2.5 years, Sarah has been through some serious ups and downs. Volunteering her time on the Board of Directors at Volunteer Kamloops gave her purpose and helped her feel valuable through a long period of unemployment and under-employment.

Sarah’s two-year term as board President ends May 2 (so that she can begin her Masters degree) and she has set up a gofundme page for Volunteer Kamloops as a way to thank the organization that has given her and many others so much. Just as volunteering allowed Sarah to retain her self-esteem and professional identity, Volunteer

Kamloops helps hundreds of local citizens every year by connecting them with meaningful volunteer opportunities that directly benefit them and the community.

Sarah can’t think of a better way to show her gratitude than to help Volunteer Kamloops raise funds so they can continue to provide necessary services, purchase new computers, and start saving money for some of the amazing new projects they have planned - including a youth program to help youngsters aging out of the foster care system.

The City of Kamloops has contracted Eagle Rock Construction to construct the new section of Grasslands Boulevard between Woodrush Drive and Cantle Drive, resulting in the completion of Grasslands Boulevard from Batchelor Drive to Westsyde Road.

Work commenced the week of April 10, with the anticipated completion by the end of summer.

In addition to the actual road construction, the project includes the following: construction of curb and gutter, improved lighting and drainage, a new water main and services, closure of Alpine Terrace at Grasslands Boulevard as well as turning restrictions off of Woodhaven Drive and McQueen Drive to improve safety at those intersections.

In conjunction with this project, a new traffic signal will be installed at Grasslands Boulevard and Westsyde Road.

Construction updates will be available at www.kamloops. ca/capitalprojects, and local residents will be informed of any potential major impacts.

They rode in a silver 1934 Bentley to the edge of central London where they boarded an open 17th century coach hitched to six magnificent white horses. As they rode toward Buckingham Palace, each looking to their side and waving to the thousands of cheering Britons lining the streets, all was going well.

This was indeed a glorious display of pageantry and dignity.

Suddenly the scene was shattered when the right rear horse let rip the most horrendous, earth-shattering, eye-smarting blast of flatulence, and the coach immediately filled with noxious fumes.

Uncomfortable, but maintaining control, the two dignitaries did their best to ignore the whole incident, but then the Queen decided that was a ridicu-

lous manner with which to handle a most embarrassing situation.

She turned to Mr. Bush and explained, “Mr. President, please accept my regrets. I’m sure you understand that there are some things even a Queen cannot control.”

George W., ever the Texas intellectual and gentleman, replied, “Your Majesty, please don’t give the matter another thought. You know, if you hadn’t said something I would have assumed it was one of the horses.”

Riding the bus

I was recently riding with a friend of mine.

We were coming to a red light, and he shoots right through it. I ask him, “Why’d you do that?” He tells me this is how his brother drives.

We come to another red light, and again, he shoots right through it.

We come to a green light, and he slams on the brakes. My heart nearly goes into my throat. I shouted at him, “Why do you do that?!”

He replied, “You never know, my brother could be coming the other way.”
