All seemed well until Jason leaves her Glauce, a Greek princess. The plot centers on Medea’s vengeance plot on Jason; she not only slays his new bride but also sacrifices the children she shares with Jason. This adaptation is set in a modern era, on the day of Jason’s wedding. Stephen Sawka, now in his tenth year at Westsyde Secondary School, says, “I read ‘Medea’ in university, and it’s always been on my wish list. It’s a dark revenge tale—and that’s fun for the performers to play exceptional roles they can sink their teeth into.” On the cusp of showcasing his twenty-first production, the Artistic Director of Performing Arts Westsyde credits the students behind creative collective. “From that first day of rehearsals to fading to black on closing night, it’s all about creating an authentic theatre experience with a professional polish.” Sawka continues, “As always, I want to give these students the best possible experience working in theatre.”

Passenger numbers continue to decline at Airport More than 29,000 people flew through the Kamloops Airport last month, down just 1.5 per cent from the same month in 2016. Year-to-date, passenger traffic is still down nearly six per cent. Manager Fred Legace says traffic is slowly recovering after a quiet January and February. “The first two months of the year were marked by a drop that was really related to the number of people who were traveling back and forth in Northern Alberta for work in the oil and gas sector. As a sector, it is starting to come back again. There have been some noises coming out of Alberta that they are looking to rehire some of the people that were laid off,” said Legace.

Legace adds April is typically the slowest month of the year, and the time when many airlines start dropping flights to markets like Kamloops. But he adds that hasn’t happened this year, and

Kamloops scout receives Queen’s Venturer Award

Scouts from across British Columbia were awarded the prestigious Queen’s Venturer Award at the 62nd annual award ceremony that took place Saturday, April 22 at Government House of British Columbia in Victoria. Kamloops Venturer Scout Rhys Paetkau was a recipient this year. The Governor General of Canada, who serves as Scouts Canada’s Patron Scout, bestowed the annual awards. This award recognizes the outstanding achievements among Venturer Scouts between the ages of 14-17. The Honourable Judith Guichon, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia

and Provincial Patron of Scouts Canada, was on hand to present the awards to 70 recipients. The Government House of British Columbia in partnership with Scouts Canada celebrated the ceremony as a Canada 150 event. Did you know that the Queen’s Venturer Award is worth 4 high school credits? The Official Scouts Canada programs are designed so that this award (and many others) is achievable by the time the youth completes grade 12 while in Venturer’s. An action-packed events calendar, return guests and some fantastic late season snowfall were contributing factors to another record setting winter season at Sun Peaks Resort. As of the end of March 2017, Sun Peaks’ resort-wide room nights increased by 12% compared to the same period last year. A new record was also set for overall skier visits. “Our continued commitment to improving the guest experience year after year, is what allows Sun Peaks to enjoy such consistent growth,” says Aidan Kelly, Chief Marketing Officer, Sun Peaks Resort LLP. “With the recent announcement of our multi-million dollar investment into our key food and beverage outlets, we are poised to continue this ascent in becoming one of the premier ski destinations in North America.” The addition of the successful Snowbombing Canada festival bolstered a strong end to the season with April occupancy up significantly from last year.

ECHO STARGAZER DEAR TAURUS: (Apr. 21 - May 21) You’re almost out of the woods and into the light of a bright new day. Prepare for your upcoming luck with a new haircut or dress. A subtle change in appearance is all that’s needed to swing the pendulum of love in your favor. DEAR GEMINI: (May 22 - June 21) A dynamic burst of energy has you cleaning up the past while simultaneously speeding into the future. You have a chance to start again as the slate is wiped clean from a recent mistake. Time is not on your side but a creative effort requires your attention. DEAR CANCER: (June 22 - July 22) New faces in your social network raise an optimistic flag for the future but don’t run off with the circus quite yet. Trouble has arrived from an unlikely source and you’re not sure how to deal with it. Put on your best smile when adversity hits and let your fans help out. DEAR LEO: (July 23 - Aug 22)You have a fresh start publicly so make the most of the weekly energy and get out, say hello and push your personal agenda. You might bump friends the wrong way as they get used to your new popularity but success hinges on shining as brightly as you can. DEAR VIRGO: (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) A recent outburst may have blown your chance with a new friend from distant shores. These things happen so pick yourself up and dust yourself off. You’ll have a second chance with someone new. DEAR LIBRA (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) A new job or chance to impress the boss opens doors to a financial windfall. Travel and higher learning both travel a bumpy road. Partners slip sideways in an unexpected twist yet again but love is arriving to smooth the day. DEAR SCORPIO: (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) A new chapter in a storybook romance leads to an adventure for the ages. Perfection is never in the cards but true love can be. Personal finances have hit a messy disruption but the plan can still succeed with creativity. Love is waiting at the gym. DEAR SAGITTARIUS: (Nov. 23 -Dec. 21) You’re still not feeling your usual jovial and optimistic self and partners aren’t exactly helping you look on the bright side. A small change in habits leads to bigger events than expected. Money arrives in the mail. DEAR CAPRICORN: (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20) You’ll have to move slow and definitely double check the paperwork but it’s a good week to being a new and creative project. Turn over a new leaf in romance and go out for some fun. It’s time to forgive and move one. DEAR AQUARIUS: (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) Romance hits the skids but you’re busy in other areas anyways. A new beginning at home signals a change in life and a shift for the better. It’s the last week to make money before attraction moves on. DEAR PISCES: (Feb. 20 - Mar. 20) Recent themes continue to repeat but this time positive overtones add fortune to the mix. Watch for accidents at home. Money is about to stream back in but you don’t want expenses to outweigh your rewards. DEAR ARIES: (Mar. 21 - April 20) You have a new start financially so make sure your course is set and you hit the week running. You’ll have extra energy available to work the phones and try something new. Love is stronger than you realize.
