Reach for Success! In an effort to recognize and encourage the many positive accomplishments of our students, YouthBuild members are encouraged to nominate students who they feel should be acknowledged for their hard work. These students demonstrate

improvement

substantial

in academics, leadership and communicative achievement. YouthBuild is honored with the opportunity to recognize and encourage these students who are demonstrating effort and making significant progress in academia and community development.

Summer 2016 What is TABE Testing? The TABE test is a good barometer for students to see if they are ready to take the HiSET or not. It also shows students how much they have learned and improved on since starting the program.

“Going up four grades in Math was really nice! I was surprised I went up four grades, I am very proud. I was also surprised how much I learned and my parents said they were really happy. I am really proud of my work and ready to move on in carpentry. One thing I would really like to say is that in High School there was always so much pressure with testing, at YouthBuild I felt no pressure, and because of that I did much better”.

Students Improve on TABE Testing Scores Students are re-tested three months after entrance into YouthBuild North Shore to see if they had any grade gains in Math or Reading. In order to make the testing more interesting and fun the staff at YouthBuild North Shore organized a "TABE Test Day". Staff and students set a goal that if they could combine for 30 TABE increases in one day that the students would earn a field trip to Cranes Beach in Ipswich Massachusetts. On July 15th 13 students at YouthBuild North Shore combined for 58.5

grade increases in Math and Reading. Every student who tested gained at least two grades in both subjects. Darlenis Soto and Luis Santana had the largest gains; both students went up six grades in Math. Darlenis also proved from her scores that she was ready to take her HiSET exam of which she is signed up to take in August. According to Darlenis, “It was very exciting to learn that I went up six grades in math. I have been working very hard in class, and feel ready to pass my HiSET exam”.

Joe Doran, who is a high school graduate had a low TABE score at entry into the YouthBuild program. On TABE test day he went up four grades in math, and is now ready to take his NCCER math test so he can be certified in Carpentry. YouthBuild and Bike & Build students

YouthBuild and Bike & Build Serve Community Together

YouthBuild students digging on site

The construction team at YouthBuild North Shore partnered with Bike and Build to help out Campfire North last month. Campfire North is a non-profit summer day program for kids. YouthBuild built 8 changing rooms and extended a roof to an existing shed. The students had to dig and pour concrete for footings, frame a roof, and install roofing for the

shed. The students then framed out 8 changing rooms and installed doors on them. Bike and Build worked hand in hand with the YouthBuild construction team building teamwork skills and professional relationships. The changing rooms will come in handy over the next few weeks as the summer months are in full swing!
