WELCOME TO NORTHERN SKY THEATER

Jeff Herbst Dave Maier Artistic Director Managing Director

Welcome to another summer and fall season beneath the northern sky. Our 2022 lineup is as exciting as ever. All four shows offer great variety in time and tone. Our summer world premiere is Love Stings and is set in the 1960s on a Wisconsin honey bee farm. Complimenting it outdoors in the park is Fishing for the Moon, a musical romp set just after the Civil War. Indoors, running simultaneously with the outdoor shows, is Dad’s Season Tickets, our blockbuster show that premiered in the new Gould Theater in 2019. Rounding out our fall Sunflowered, set in the present day and taking place in Peninsula State Park. It’s amazing to be back in the park with full productions and all of the wonderful improvements we’ve been able to make. We trust that your experience in the park will be richer for it. We are also keen to have our summer audience experience the Gould, doubling your Northern Sky experience of enjoying shows written with you in mind. Through the past couple of years, especially in 2020 when we could not perform live for you, we have grown ever-more aware of how special our relationship is with you. We took every opportunity we could to stay connected with you throughout the pandemic by offering a virtual season, by posting almost daily on social media, and by reaching out through email to keep you informed about all we continued to create. But we are a theater company and that brings with it the very special need for a communal, live experience. We are eager to hear your laughter and see the smiles on your faces as we celebrate another opportunity to be together, live and in person, something we do not take for granted.

Thanks for coming and enjoy the show!

Origin stories – everyone’s got one. We at Northern Sky just love to hear your origin stories. Stand next to any Northern Sky company member and chances are they’ll share theirs – their first show, their favorite song, their funniest moment. Well, here’s mine. When my brother DJ and I were little, Mom and Dad took us camping in Peninsula Park several times every summer. In 1970, we tromped through the woods to see this exciting new singing and storytelling group called Heritage Ensemble perform on the naturalist’s stage. Wow, we loved it! We sang the songs all the way back to the campsite, picking up sticks for our bonfire along the way. Since that first show, a trip to Door County wasn’t complete without seeing a show in the Park. The night my husband Bob told my parents he was going to propose, he and I had gone to a Heritage Ensemble show. Now, I’m not sure the Ensemble gets credit for that monumental life decision, but I’m just saying. From then on, from wherever we lived, we travelled back to the Park every season, bringing along our three kids to enjoy the stories Northern Sky had to tell. Over those years, Heritage Ensemble became American Folklore Theater became Northern Sky Theater, first in the Park, then adding the Gould stage, all of which is itself an origin story. Last year we adopted a statement to acknowledge the native peoples of Northeast Wisconsin, because the land upon which we tell our stories has an origin story too. And here we are. I never would have dreamed, those years ago, that someday I would be asked to serve as the chair of the board of this beloved theater. How lucky am I? Many of you have Northern Sky origin stories that go way back, for which we thank you. If you are new to the Northern Sky experience, welcome and we hope you continue to build upon your origin story with us for many years to come! As my own experience shows, who knows where that can lead?

Jeff has been with Northern Sky since 1991 and became Artistic Director in 1993. He began his collaboration with the Heritage Ensemble, Northern Sky’s predecessor, in 1985 as part of the Governor Dodge State Park troupe and then migrated north to direct for the Peninsula State Park group in 1988 and 1989. He has worked on over seventy original productions with Northern Sky, including Guys on Ice, Lumberjacks in Love, Packer Fans from Outer Space, and Bone Dance. Jeff was instrumental in developing Northern Sky’s New Works Program and the Fred Alley New Musical Fund, nurturing writing teams in bringing an original work “from the page to the stage.” He was integrally involved with the design of the new Gould Theater and Northern Sky campus. He recently initiated Northern Sky Nova, a nascent program for nurturing up and coming talent. Jeff has an MFA in Acting from the Asolo Conservatory and has performed on and off Broadway, as well as at regional theatres throughout the United States. He and Fred Alley were honored in 2017 with the Distinguished Alumni Award from their alma mater, Mt. Horeb High School, for their work in creating original musical theater.

DAVE MAIER Managing Director This is Dave’s fifteenth year with Northern Sky and a baker’s dozen as Managing Director. He met his muse, Barb, when they attended the UW-Madison Theatre program together. Later, after graduating from the American Conservatory Theater Advanced Training Academy in San Francisco, Dave joined the A.C.T. acting company as an Equity actor, eventually assuming additional roles as a conservatory trainer and stage director. He was also production manager of A.C.T.’s Plays-in-Progress Program, where he helped produce over thirty premiere productions, many of which he either designed or directed. He co-founded and served eight years as Artistic Director for Encore Theatre Company in San Francisco, a critically acclaimed experimental theater company. Dave and Barb have two amazing grown sons, Wes and Zac, and they’ve been blessed to call Door County home for almost thirty years now. painter Ryan

Have you heard about Door County Amplify yet? We love it, and we want you to know about it! It’s a social-media endeavor begun by Lachrisa Grandberry and Molly Rhode (both known in the county for their work onstage at Northern Sky, of course). In January of 2021, the pair launched a community Facebook page to celebrate the work of BIPOC artists who work in Door County. BIPOC stands for Black, Indigenous and People of Color. The page’s impact is twofold: It brings more visibility to the diverse artistry found on the peninsula, and it fosters positive relationships between the community and the artists featured on the page.

“People I encounter often wonder what it’s like for me to be a Black artist in Door County,” Grandberry said. “They didn’t directly say it that way my first year. Instead, it was masked in the question, ‘Are you going to come back?’ And when I would respond ‘Yes,’ there was a sense of relief in knowing I was comfortable here.“

MOLLY RHODE Associate Artistic Director Director Performer

This season’s two world premieres will mark Molly’s 28th and 29th shows with Northern Sky. She’s honored to create another new role on the park stage in Love Stings under Pam Kriger’s direction. And she’s proud to be on the directing team for Sunflowered at the Gould this fall. Molly joined Northern Sky as an actor in 2007, directed her first new work in Pen. Park in 2013, and joined the staff as Associate Artistic Director in 2014. Her focus is New Play Development, and she is honored to work closely with so many extraordinary authors. Her most recent work in Milwaukee was directing The Amazing Lemonade Girl, a new play about the life of Alex Scott by James DeVita at First Stage. Next winter, she’ll join the fine folks at Forward Theater Company in Madison to direct Airness, a play about competitive air guitar. Yes, really. Molly has been married to actor Chase Stoeger for 13 kick-ass years. Love to Silvia and all her incredible grandparents.

During its first year, Door County Amplify created 314 posts, amplifying 101 artists and 18 ensembles affiliated with 22 different Door County institutions. When publishing Amplify posts, Grandberry and Rhode tag the Door County organization, business, or gallery with which each artist is working. This social networking further celebrates community and acknowledges our collective progress.

Because of you...

Holly Feldman Associate Managing Director

We can’t help but marvel at the list of names on the following pages. Thank YOU for holding this place dear to your heart. Thank YOU for believing in our future. Your faith in us has never wavered and we never take that faith for granted.

In 2016, Northern Sky launched the Constellation Campaign to ensure our future. Because of folks like you, our creative center, on the corner of A & F, featuring our new indoor space, The Gould Theater, opened in 2019 with a nearly sold out run of Dad’s Season Tickets. This spring, we completed the final phase of our campaign projects with major enhancements to our home in Peninsula State Park including a new concession stand and merchandise booth, new additions to our dressing rooms, and new restrooms. It goes without saying that our upgrade to flush toilets received rave reviews in 2021. And so, at this moment, we simply want to say, “Thanks.”

Park BenchTheaterSampleSeat Donors may name a seat or bench after themselves, in memory of a loved one, or in honor of a family member or friend. $2,000 $1,000 If you are feeling inspired to support our ongoing building projects, we are still accepting gifts for the Constellation Campaign! In fact, you can be a permanent part of this legacy with your name on a seat at the Gould Theater or a bench in the park. Your continued belief in what we do is the key component to the success of this campaign. Reach out to Holly to make your holly@northernskytheater.comgift: • New public restrooms • Improved seating comfort Nor thern Sky Amphitheater Enhancements • Technical booth rebuild with new center lighting grid • New merchandise & concessions facilities • Two new patron shelter areas • Additional backstage storage units • Renovated patron staircase entr y area • Parking lot improvements • Dressing room renovation & expansion • Sound system improvements

CAMPAIGN DONORS IN MEMORY OF NEEN ROCK The Neen Rock Costume Shop Northern Sky worked with Neen’s siblings and Brian to determine the best way to memorialize her. It is our honor to report that Neen’s name will forever grace our Costume Shop at the Gould Theater and will also have a place of honor on our donor wall in the lobby.

NorthernSkyTheater.com 47

As we continue to grieve Neen Rock, the backbone and heartbeat of Northern Sky, we have found it healing to look back at photos and video that we are lucky to have in our collection. To hear her voice, see her face, and experience her infectious laugh is a joy and a balm. We hope you take some comfort in our tributes found here: https://northernskytheater.com/neen-rock/ If you would like, you can leave your own memory or photograph.

NEEN ROCK Props Designer & More!

Neen designed and constructed costumes, sets and props for numerous shows starting in the later years of the Heritage Ensemble and continuing through the AFT years. She served as Northern Sky’s production stage manager for their summer and fall seasons since that position was created through 2020. Neen worked at Northern Sky for over thirty years, and her contributions to the company as a designer, stage manager, mentor, and beloved friend were too numerous and far-reaching to write in one paragraph. Her extensive credits designing props for dozens of Northern Sky shows include Loose Lips Sink Ships, Packer Fans from Outer Space, Muskie Love, Victory Farm, The Bachelors, Dairy Heirs, We Like It Where?, and Dad’s Season Tickets. In addition to her Northern Sky family, Neen had an extensive network of colleagues and friends in Madison, where she grew up. She worked at many venues there, including Children’s Theater of Madison, Madison Ballet, Madison Opera, and the Overture Center. She was a proud member of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, IATSE Local 251, and Actors’ Equity Association.

MATTHEW LEVINE Composer Matthew has been writing songs for 40 years in styles from rock, pop, jazz, cabaret, art, children’s, a cappella, and others. His first musical, The Angel of Painted Post with collaborators Richard Castle and Adrian Bewley, was picked by Steven Schwartz to have the first act performed at the 2014 ASCAP/ Dreamworks Musical Theater Workshop. His first musical produced by Northern Sky Theater with lyricist/bookwriter Richard Castle, Oklahoma in Wisconsin, had its debut in 2017. He is thrilled to once again collaborate with his Northern Sky family on Love Stings. More of his music can be heard at matthewslevine.bandcamp.com.

RICHARD CASTLE Playwright & Lyricist Richard is excited to premiere Love Stings at Northern Sky, where Oklahoma in Wisconsin was seen in 2017. Book & Lyrics by Richard Castle Music by Matthew Levine

– Richard Castle

Bees are incredible creatures. One little bee pollinates up to 5,000 flowers per day. It can carry its own weight of pollen and nectar back to the hive, where something magical happens. The entire colony works together to transform it into something beautiful: honey. Honey is a natural miracle; it never spoils. It’s been found sealed in Egyptian tombs, fresh as the day it was made. One beekeeper told me that opening a beehive is “like finding Igold.”didn’t

A Note from the Author of Love Stings

NorthernSkyTheater.com 59

The biggest similarity between honey and musicals has to do with love, which is important enough that I included it in the title of Love Stings

know the first thing about bees when I began writing Love Stings, my new musical set on a bee farm. But the more I learned, the more I realized that making honey has a lot in common with putting on a musical.

Honeybees return to the same spot every year to pollinate, much like we return to Door County each summer to see a Northern Sky show. And like wine, the taste of honey differs depending on the crop, making each vintage an entirely unique production. Northern Sky premieres a new musical every year, each one also an entirely unique production. It takes a lot of bees to produce a jar of honey, and it takes a lot of talented folks to produce a musical. For every actor you see onstage, there are many busy bees behind the scenes. Backstage is a hive of activity, with set designers, costumers, musicians, and production staff striving to create something beautiful. Our queen bee is director Pam Kriger, who also helmed our last show, Oklahoma in Wisconsin. I’m especially grateful to Jeff Herbst for not telling me to buzz off when I pitched him a musical about bees.

Beekeepers love what they do. They feel an emotional, even spiritual connection to their bees and honey. I love musicals. I feel an emotional, even spiritual connection when I’m in an audience, sitting under the stars at a Northern Sky show. Whether you find Love Stings to be as sweet as honey or maybe even a little sappy, you’re all beekeepers tonight. Let’s open the hive and find some gold!

There are tongue twisters and riddles, slapstick and silliness, beauty beheld and bargains made. It is a very funny show with quite a few delightful surprises! From the 1992 AFT Playbill: “The years following the Civil War were not particularly humorous…did we choose the post war era for its bittersweet atmosphere or the natural release of hysterical energy that follows great loss? Perhaps the sweetness of lovers’ tender reunions and the abiding loyalty of friendships forged under fire? No. We already had the costumes.”

Book & Lyrics by Fred Alley

A Note from the Composer of Fishing for the Moon

Revisiting the play now, I hear quite a bit of Fred’s dad, George, in the humor, some of which can only be described as “Dad jokes.”

Fishing for the Moon 1999

Music by James Kaplan

I’ve spent a great deal of my life contemplating numbers. There is a through line from my love and study of music theory to my interest in accounting. Organizing numbers so that the surrounding area makes sense. So as I contemplated Fishing for the Moon being a part of this summer season at Peninsula State Park, I couldn’t help but notice some numbers of significance. This summer is the 30th anniversary of the premiere of Fishing for the Moon, the first show I created with Fred Alley. The premiere happened in June 1992, when I had just turned 30 years old. Even if you don’t have such a great flair for numbers, you might have done some math and determined that it was half a lifetime ago. It is especially wonderful that I will get to play piano for this year’s production with a couple other veterans of the original production–Jeff Herbst will portray Colonel T. Riley Olson, and Karen Mal will be joining me in our small but determined orchestra.

Book, Lyrics & Music by Matt Zembrowski

The reason that characters in a musical break into song is because the emotions those characters are feeling at any given moment become so intense that mere words will no longer suffice. I’ve been a die-hard Packer fan for most of my life, but I didn’t actually go to my first game at Lambeau Field until I was almost 30. And despite having seen it on TV hundreds of times, I still had no idea what to expect when I walked into the light at the end of that tunnel. When the character of Rhonda gazes out on that “neverending sea of Green and Gold” for the first time in Act Two of Dad’s Season Tickets, her reaction is essentially what my reaction was, but accompanied by a three piece band. So what is it about the Packers? Having read just about every book on the subject I could find, I still don’t have a satisfactory answer to that question. But when I walked into Lambeau Field for the first time, I could feel it. And the fact that they play in a stadium named after a coach and not a company speaks volumes about the history of this Whenfranchise.Iset about writing a show involving Packer season tickets, I knew there was no way I would ever be able to put into mere words the intrinsic link between the Packers and the city of Green Bay in a way that would satisfy both theatergoers and football fans. So I decided the only way to approach this vast subject was to focus on a family. And while the members of the Kosinski family are inspired by - and in some cases named after - people near and dear to me, they could be any family in Wisconsin. For better or worse, we all know someone just like Ralph, or Frank, or Gabby. And some of you out there may feel just like Cordy, or Edgar. So I hope you’ll forgive the absurdity of watching a bunch of people sing about a football team, but it’s the only way I could express what the Packers mean to me, and (I’m guessing) to a lot of you out there. – Matt Zembrowksi

Sunflowered is an exploration of the good times, the bad times, the hard times, the fun times, the adventurous times, the still times, the painful times, and the simple times. When you watch these six women come into the Wisconsin woods, you’ll find yourself rooting for all of them, because you’ll recognize that they are all of us. In this story, through the powerful display of sisterhood and friendships we see what it means to take on the challenge of figuring out how to make moments count while navigating the whirlwinds of life. Now more than ever, I understand how important it is to make time for my peaceful place, which is the woods; connect with community, who, for me, tend to be my sistah friends; slow down and breathe, something I don’t do often enough; and love out loud because I don’t want to miss my chance to.

Book by Lachrisa Grandberry & Aidaa Peerzada

From the very beginning, before characters, dialogue, lyrics, or even an idea of what this story could be was written down, we knew we wanted to honor the rich, magical, and beautiful bond of women. Women, who are so much more than we often comprehend. Women, who so graciously and generously serve as the glue that keeps this world intact. Women, who bear physical, emotional, and mental pain and yet still find a way to offer so much good to those around them.

Lyrics by Lachrisa Grandberry

This story was always meant to honor the not so hidden gems of our society, women. And then there is time. Something we so often take for granted, and forget both how much and how little of it we have. Time seems invisible, hard to grab hold of, and yet so full of stuff.

My life is surrounded, I believe, by some of the most amazing women in the world. Women who challenge me, inspire me, teach me, and push me. I admire their strength and resilience. And from those women, this story was born. So to all the women I ever knew, thank you. I am who I am because of you.

Northern Sky’s One Act of Kindness Society celebrates those who have chosen to create a lasting legacy by including Northern Sky in their will, trust, or estate plan. The phrase “one act of kindness” comes from the title of a song in Boxcar, by Laurie Flanigan Hegge and James Valcq. The song insists that one act of kindness often ripples out into many others, opening “doors that were shut” by reminding us “there is good in the Jimworld.”Caldwell created one such ripple when he named Northern Sky in his estate plans. When Jim passed away in 2018, we asked his wife, Susan, how Jim would like to be recognized for his generous gift. Susan said, “Well, Jim’s the kind of guy who would love to have his name on all the practical stuff.” And so now we have the Jim Caldwell Production Building as part of our creative campus where we keep all the “practical stuff” that allows us to make theater magic.

Members of Northern Sky’s One Act of Kindness Society Ann Abbott E.H.

Susan Caldwell, now a member of Northern Sky’s Board of Directors, would like to encourage others to join Jim in our One Act of Kindness ToSociety.notify us of your plans, or to learn more about what including Northern Sky in your estate plans might look like, please contact Holly Feldman at holly@northernskytheater.com or 920-633-3228.

Northern Sky offers many different ways to get involved with the theatre experience –ushering, selling concessions, guiding parking and assisting our disabled guests, as well as assisting with special events. Volunteers can choose what job they would like to do and their hours – no matter what you enjoy doing and when you enjoy doing it, there is a task for everyone. If this sounds interesting, we’d love to hear from you. No experience is necessary – just a willingness to help and a desire to be part of something original in Door County. Please call the Northern Sky office at (920) 854-6117 or e-mail

The show will go on if at all possible. Northern Sky staff will wait to decide on cancelling a show until show time, or even a bit after if the weather appears to be passing. If the show is less than half over when called off, you will have the option of either a refund or a rain check ticket, which is good for any future Northern Sky performance without expiration (watch for an email from our office). Otherwise guests will be issued rain check tickets only. If you choose not to attend and the show goes on as scheduled, there are no refunds.
